Four days. More than 600 exhibitors.AIMEX 2013 presents quite a challenge to even the most seasoned conference delegate. One of Australias largest trade shows

rolls into Sydney this month. Just about every sector of the mining industry will be represented at the event.Once held every four years, AIMEX will

now be appearing on the mining calendar on a more regular basis, a er organisers decided to stage the show on a biennial basis.A lot has happened in the world of mining

since AIMEX 2011. It will be interesting to hear the views of the companies and delegates travelling to Sydney. Some of the companies who were at AIMEX

2011 have decided not to attend this years

event. Each will have their own, individual reasons for staying away. But we shouldnt be too alarmed by the no-shows. Many of those who wont travel to New

South Wales were at MINExpo in Las Vegas last year, the worlds largest mining equipment show.As companies across the world push

the nancial reset button, its asking the impossible for even the largest companies to attend every event. So, what can we expect from those attending

AIMEX 2013? Regular readers of Australias Mining Monthly will have read our AIMEX preview features in the June and July editions. Many companies have selected AIMEX

to unveil new equipment or technology to the mining public. Others will use the show

to engage with delegates from across the industry.Im looking forward to talking to both

companies and delegates. It isnt o en so many people from the same industry all gather under the same roof.Lets hope its a great show and we all leave

Sydney with a positive message on the health of mining.Enjoy Australias Mining Monthlys AIMEX

Volatile commodity prices and a need to increase operational efficiencies are among the main drivers for miners heading to Australias largest mining exhibition. Organisers of AIMEX 2013 expect

visitors to be searching for ways to increase productivity and reduce operational costs through technology and services. Thousands of delegates are expected to

attend this months event in Sydney, while more than 600 exhibitors will take up floor space of over 45,000sq.m.AIMEX organiser, Reed Mining Events

executive chairman Peter Van Iersel, said the exhibition was occurring at a critical time for the mining industry in Australia and overseas. As global commodity prices are becoming

more volatile, Australian mining companies are looking at ways of reducing their operating costs, he said.

Capital expenditureMiners head to AIMEX this month searching for ways to make their operations more efficient. By Alison Middleton

    AIMEX 2013

Weve all seen the recent headlines highlighting contractor lay-offs and even mine closures.Miners are taking a close look at where

they can increase operational efficiencies, raise productivity and achieve more with less. AIMEX 2013 will provide an ideal opportunity for that.Certainly, they are looking at innovative

products or services that offer opportunities to increase efficiencies and reduce costs, and theres a number of interesting examples of these that will be on show at AIMEX.But in many instances, its a case of looking

for incremental changes across all their operations, which, added up, can all make a big difference in improving productivity, he said.Key areas where miners are looking to

improve the cost-effectiveness of their operations include equipment-management systems and services, IT, engineering and fabrication services, and alternative sources of supply.Mine management, asset management,

process-control systems and engineering services are expected to be of particular interest to visitors. Engineering services, including fabrication

specialists and structures, parts and components suppliers will also have a strong presence. Equipment management is becoming

critical to reducing costs, Van Iersel continued. Capital expenditure is under constant

review, with mining companies are looking to get more life out of their existing

    equipment.Those companies offering repair

and maintenance services, equipment-monitoring solutions and fleet management services are seeing good demand for their services.Another increasingly significant area

of interest is in equipment sourced from developing markets, particularly China. Van Iersel said AIMEX 2013 was being held

at an ideal time for the mining industry, due to the challenges being faced by the resources and commodities sectors. He added: AIMEX presents a unique

opportunity for miners to see the widest possible range of productivity-enhancing products and services in one place.AIMEX will also host three themed days

to facilitate engagement with the mining community. The Women in Mining Day will take place

on August 21, while the Mining Safety Day is on August 22. An Industry Productivity Day is scheduled for August 23.High-profile speakers at the AIMEX

2013 theme days include Australian Coal Association chief executive officer Dr Nikki Williams and Beaconsfield mine tragedy survivor Brant Webb.Issues such as fly-in, fly-out relationships

and children will also be on the agenda, with visitors having a chance to meet with Mining Family Matters website co-founders Alicia Ranford and Lainie Anderson.AIMEX 2013 will take place at Sydney

An industrial tool provider and lifting specialist is promising to launch some of the industrys most advanced bolting and hydraulic pumping technology at this years event. Enerpac will showcase its XC Series

cordless pump, which has been coupled with pull cylinders to remove a potential safety hazard when maintaining conveyors in confined spaces. The pump has been designed to offer the

performance capabilities of a corded electric or pneumatic-powered pump with the portability of a hand pump.It is used to simultaneously power two

10-tonne BRP pull cylinders, anchored overhead the conveyor to precisely control hoisting. The XC-Series cordless pumps are

constructed of lightweight materials, equipped with a half-horsepower motor and feature 28-volt, lithium-ion battery technology. Enerpac mining manager Warren

Baltineshter said: The BRP pull cylinders are extensively proven in rugged environments and confined spaces, such as mines and materials-handling facilities. They combine effortlessly with the all-new

line of XC cordless pumps, which provide a portable, cost-effective solution that deliver the speed, power and longevity of a corded pump. Enerpac will have torque tools mounted

on a piece of excavator machinery track to demonstrate the technology to delegates at AIMEX.The team will be led by Australia and New

Zealand manager Tony Brooks, national sales manager Darryl Lange, and Warren Baltineshter.Miners interested in heavy and complex

lifting, shifting and positioning projects will also have the opportunity to discuss projects and technology with Enerpacs newly appointed integrated solutions manager Richard Verhoeff.Verhoeff will focus on applications such

as synchronous-lifting technology that can safely lift, balance, weigh and launch resources structures weighing up to 75,000 tonnes. He will also be able to discuss Enerpacs

role in the hoisting and positioning of 12 massive 800-1400t ball mills to accuracies within fractions of a millimetre at CITIC Pacifics Sino Iron Ore magnetite project in Western Australia.Other new products on show will include

the square-drive and hexagonal-torque wrench cassettes with tensioners, torque multipliers and a torque wrench pump, the TQ700E-K-100, which incorporates ultrasonic technology to help ensure safe joints.Enerpac said hydraulic and mechanical

technology would also be a feature of the companys stand, including non-impact bolting technology, new-generation hydraulic pumps, and synchronous technology.Synchronous technology comes in many

guises including the upper end of the lifting scale, national sales manager Darryl Lange

said. But it can just as delicately handle smaller, individual loads, such as the use of gantry-lift technology to place generators or work on heavy-vehicle servicing. Obviously, some of these systems are too

big to fit into AIMEX, but the information and people we will have there are highly relevant to mining audiences seeking safety and cost-efficiency. Based in the US, Enerpac has an Australian

headquarters in Sydney. Enerpac will be at Stand H1079.

Introducing the NEW shaft less OneFits idler roll designed for optimisation in conveyor performance and safety for bulk materials handling.

Post boom commodity prices, mining companies are now seeking to maximise productivity and achieve cost efficiencies. When conveyors stop or numerous roll change outs occur, this results in high maintenance and downtime costs. One mine spends $6.5m pa in roll change outs alone.

This innovative idler roll has been designed to address these issues along with a quantum gain in occupational health and safety. The traditional causes of failure have been designed out of the idler roll, which can be utilised in most existing conveyors using the clever adaptors. They can also replace much more expensive rolls. Also potential inventory savings of up to 80%.

New South Wales company Solar Hire will showcase its new mobile lighting towers for mining. Solar Hires towers use SunPower E20 solar panels to attract energy and can be operated manually or automatically, depending on user preference. We have newly designed lighting towers

ready for use in the eld, sales manager Tyron Paul said. e lighting towers have been developed

to provide signi cant economic advantages compared to diesel-powered units. Each light tting produces 5000 lumens,

which is equivalent to a 250-watt metal halide oodlight. Solar Hires entire lighting tower range is

built to mine speci cation requirements. Each is MDG15-compliant, meaning it

conforms to NSW government guidelines for

mobile and transportable equipment on mine sites.Paul said the lighting towers came with

no ongoing fuel costs, produced no fumes or noise, and required no servicing. Our units are ideal for shutdowns, go-lines,

intersections and car parks, in and around crib huts and amenities, rail works, road works, as well as residential areas, he added. For companies looking to reduce their

carbon footprint and claiming carbon tax rebates, our mobile,LED solar-lighting towers o er companies a solution. e lighting towers mast can be set at any

working height. e lights have 360 degree pan or tilt-adjustment modes, which can be controlled through a hand-held controller. Its lights are powered by a 24 volt 750Ah

battery system and feature a 240V 34A onboard battery charger. Our lights can be fully charged by the

systems solar panels, the 24V batteries can run the lights for more than 70-plus hours without input from the solar panels, Paul said. Solar Hires newest design towers are

signi cantly smaller than its previous models, just 2.5m by 1.8m.

A German mineral processing firm has expanded its global footprint with the launch of its Australian subsidiary.Haver Australia will promote its arrival

and the launch of a new service when the company introduces its products and services to the industry at AIMEX 2013.The company, which already counts Rio

Tinto among its clients, advises miners on the minerals screening process, from particle analysis and screen media to vibrating screens and processing technology. With a newly established office in Perth,

Haver is also hoping to drum up some new clients with the promotion of its Pro-Deck approach to mineral processing. It involves implementing an analysis and

modification strategy to maximise screen productivity and minimise wear.Haver Australia technical manager Dominik

Vennewald said the Australian subsidiary was set up to provide a better service to existing customers and potential clients. The facility we have established in WA

gives our customers direct local access to technology that will create greater efficiency in their operations, a wide range of readily

available spare parts and access to our technical experts, he said. When it comes to processing, we have a range of innovative mineral-processing machines for screening, washing and pelletising, which are customised to meet the clients needs.Vennewald said the Pro-Deck consultative

approach was a five-step process to maximise clients screening systems. The approach starts with an onsite visit to

look at the vibrating screens, he said. Our certified Pro-Deck technician will

carry out a professional analysis in order to determine the best mix of screen media for each individual operation, using our signature wireless vibration analysis system to monitor and analyse speed, as well as overall performance. Following the inspection of the key

machine components including the body, drive and mounting system, the technician examines the vibrating screen for interference or loose components. An analysis of the bearing temperature,

feed material and the screen media is also carried out. The expert onsite then determines the critical deck and sections within the screen.

Based on the performance of the screen and wear experienced on sections of the deck, the technical expert from Haver will make a recommendation regarding screen media modification. The Pro-Deck approach also evaluates

material characteristics, the function of the plant and final output qualities to ensure the best blending of screen media.Adjustments to the screen media are made

one section at a time. Results are closely monitored to ensure

the highest quality output and maximum productivity.Once the new screen media is installed,

the results are measured and documented, with a focus placed on the next section, Vennewald said.As each phase of screening works

differently, a customised approach helps tailor the right type of screen media to each of the three phases layered, basic and sharp screening, which accounts for the two most important factors, open area and wear life. Haver Australia will be at stand B1111 at

Dust control and water evaporation specialist Pro Air Solutions is unveiling its V22 atomised water cannon at AIMEX. Based in Brisbane, Queensland, Pro Air

is a subsidiary of Italian snowmaking expert TechnoAlpin. Pro Air managing director omas Peinter

said the state-of-the-art V22 water cannon was designed for mining companies to decrease their impact on the surrounding environment, by reducing dust and excess water onsite. Costing less than comparable equipment,

the V series atomised water cannons have been purposely developed for dust suppression and the V22 speci cally designed to manage excess site water, Peinter said. In our research and development tests the V series reduced dust emissions by up to 90 per cent.

e V22 water cannon can lower the amount of dust in the air by emitting a very ne water mist.It can cover a large area without soaking the

ground. Miners can control the cannon remotely or

the machine can operate automatically. It features an 18.5 kilowatt turbine, with

a 70m throw, and Pro Airs patented nozzle technology that can manage droplet size and direct ow. e V22 water cannon incorporates a 360

degree rotation and can reach a maximum 43 degree elevation, as well as a 200 litre per minute to 900 L/min output. It can capture ne and harmful 2.5

micrometre particles, reduce downtime and maintenance due to dust, manage water volumes onsite, and utilise and manage a

wide range of water qualities, Peintner said. is cannon will not only lower costs but also reduce an operations carbon footprint through reduced fuel consumption. e manufacturer EMI Controls and

    AIMEX 2013

An Australian light manufacturer is to launch its first product for the mining industry at AIMEX.HELLA Australia said the HypaLUME light was the companys first high-output LED floodlight designed specifically to withstand demanding outdoor and industrial requirements.Typical applications for the floodlights

include conveyor lines, underground tunnels and ore-processing plants.General manager Stuart Ellacott said the

lights were suitable for direct and alternating current applications. Producing more than 20,000 lumens

by using 56 high-power, colour-matched LEDs coupled with three specialised optical distributions, the HELLA HypaLUME consumes far less power compared with conventional industrial lighting, he said.It uses 240W at 24VDC, translating to a

luminous efficiency close to 100 lumens per watt, which means it provides similar light

levels to a 400W metal halide light fitting while using far less power. The product was designed and

manufactured at the companys base in Mentone, Victoria. Both the driver board and housing use

advanced thermal management to draw heat away from the LEDs and ensure long operating life.Designed to operate in temperatures

ranging from -40C to 50C with no decrease in output, the floodlight also has a high-impact lens that is chemical resistant. The LED driver electronics ensure light

output remains stable over a wide range of voltage variations, and the HypaLUME is also protected from reverse polarity and short-circuit faults.Ellacott said the units also reduced CO2

emissions. The LEDs operate at a colour temperature

of 5700K to provide a near-daylight environment and a comfortable work area

wherever they are used, he said. They are also protected from reverse polarity and short-circuit faults, and the light produced remains consistent across a wide range of voltage applications. The HELLA HypaLUME, designed

and manufactured in Australia, represents the next generation of highly efficient, yet economic industrial area lighting products. The quality produced simply cannot be

compared with conventional lighting based on operating costs, service life and light output quality throughout each units service life.We have taken into account feedback

from many sites and operators, equipment manufacturers and lighting users to produce a floodlight that combines real-world performance with energy efficiency, Ellacott added.HELLA Australia will unveil its HypaLUME

Visitors to AIMEX will be offered a wide variety of mining products this year. Sydney-based manufacturing company BAC Systems will unveil its latest racking and shelving products at the exhibition this month. BAC Systems will display its BAC series

77 concept, which precedes the companys award-winning BAC Rack. At AIMEX 2013, the mining industry

will get its first look at our new BAC series 77, which caters for general pallet racking requirements, BAC Systems marketing manager Robert Griffin said. It now also includes our dedicated Long

Span Shelving system. Customers can incorporate BAC Systems

High Density Drawer system into the same structure as the BAC series 77s pallet racking. This provides an efficient hybrid storage

solution to suit requirements from a two-bay parts store all the way up to a large distribution warehouse, Griffin added. In addition to the BAC series 77, BAC

Systems said it would be promoting its solutions that offered high density storage for its Drawer Storage modules. For miners needing office furniture, BAC

Systems can offer its customisable range of workbenches and workstations. Griffin said BAC Systems products offered

efficient, clean and innovative approaches to storage. We believe our special integrated dust

control feature will be a major talking point for our High Density Drawer Storage modules, he said. Dust is causing millions of dollars worth

of damage each year to machinery, so mining companies are investing heavily in developing new systems to purge it from parts. At BAC Systems, weve realised that a

more cost-saving approach would be to keep the dust from stock in the first place. Its range of Dust Control Storage modules

complies with the Caterpillar Category 5 Contamination Control. The Storage modules are used in mines and

warehouses across the Asia Pacific region, keeping dust away from small to medium-sized mining tools.

Open GatesVisitors to AIMEX can check out the latest high-pressure hoses and crimping machines for mining.

    AIMEX 2013

Mining services specialist Gates Australia has chosen AIMEX to unveil a 413-bar high-pressure 2-inch hose and a 2in crimping machine. The one-piece, non-skive coupling, high-

pressure 32EFG6K hose is an addition to Gates MegaSpiral range and suited for high-impulse applications. Equipment used in the mining industry

is pushing the limits of hydraulic design with the need for more power and greater speeds, Gates Australia marketing services coordinator Stephanie Papathanasiou said. Gates MegaSpiral hoses can handle this,

having been tested to 1 million impulse cycles, which is twice the Society of Automotive Engineers requirement. At AIMEX Gates will also launch its GC32-TSi

crimping machine, with features including an indexing head that rotates slightly on every crimp, ensuring a consistent application of grease. This prolongs the life and accuracy of the

crimper and increases maintenance intervals, Papathanasiou said. The crimper uses a touchpad Android

tablet as the controller and user interface. It incorporates data from the Gates eCrimp website to advise the correct dies to load and automatically correct crimp settings. The crimper can even measure and validate

the final crimp dimension, with the technology helping to minimise operator error for safer, more reliable hose assemblies, she said.Gates will showcase its MegaSys hydraulic hose

and coupling systems for mining applications, which all have fire resistant anti-static and Mine Safety and Health Administration approval.

They have constant pressure ranges up to 550 bar, colour-coded laylines and comprise both spiral wire and braid wire hose assemblies designed and tested to 1 million and 600,000 impulse cycles respectively, Papathanasiou said. Other products showcased will include Gates

Lifeguard sleeves for line-of-sight protection against hose failure and its power transmission belts including synchronous belt drives that can replace roller chain drives and industrial v-belts.Its Predator v-belt is constructed from

ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber.US-based Gates, with Australian headquarters

in Melbourne, Victoria, develops hydraulic hoses, leak resistant couplings and crimpers, industrial hoses and power transmission systems for the mining industry.
