ACROSS AFRICA
What is HIV and AIDS?

mangabeys in microbial form to humans when they were hunted for food and blood transfer occurred, according to CNN
• First confirmed case; a Bantu man in Africa in 1959
• in confirmed cases in America around 1981 • Called AIDS for first time in 1982

Why should we be concerned?
• 5 young people around the globe are infected every minute of every day
• Most don’t even know they have it• Millions of innocent children are dying every year• Every year 15 million children die of hunger• Nearly one in four people, 1.3 billion - a majority of
humanity - live on less than $1 per day, while the world's 358 billionaires have assets exceeding the combined annual incomes of countries with 45 percent of the world's people. UNICEF
• Every 3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger • What do you think?
What does government stability in Africa have to do with the problem?• Africa is predominantly a political mess!• There have been numerous civil wars, overthrows of governments
in place, tribal and cultural upheavals, and resource battles among African nations.
• Most of these events have taken place in countries South of the Sahara
• Stability is fleeting and has been since most of these countries gained independence less than 50 years ago.
• With the problems of desertification, AIDS, famine, lack of clean water, and population explosion how do you think this question should be answered?
