POTATO BLIGHT

Potato blight was airborne so you could not see it.

By November 1845 half the crop was gone

The potato being the main food of the Irish was rotten with blight (phytophra-infestans fungus)

The inside of the potato was ruined

STARVATION

During the Famine, over one million people died of starvation.

They had plenty of other crops but they were sold or exported to pay for the rent.

Being under British rule had ruined Ireland.

COFFIN SHIPS & PRISON SHIPS

Many people had to emigrate because they could not pay for the rent.

The ships they travelled on were called coffin ships.

If you committed a crime during the famine you would be sent to Australia on a prison ship

EVICTIONS

People that could not pay their rent were evicted.

So they could not get in the house was burned down.

The landlords sent their soldiers to do it.

LORD RUSSELL

When Robert Peel lost the election he lost power over Ireland

Lord Russell who preceded Robert Peel and decided to stop relief works and maize going to Ireland.

SOUP KITCHENS

Soup kitchens were set up by the quakers,to feed the poor..

Soup kitchens were sometimes way too over crowded.

They could not keep up with the amount of hungry people.
