What is Coaching?
• Coaching is providing guidance, feedback, and direction to ensure successful performance
• Coaching is an act of supporting someone else to achieve personal and professional goals
• Coaching is different from traditional instruction– Teaching implies an end at content mastery– Coaching takes place over a lifetime
Common Elements of All Coaching Models
Relationship—connection and caring: connection between the coach and the
person being coached
Objectives—goals or focus: identification of goal(s) of coaching session by person being coached
Action—empowerment and challenge: identify meaningful,
strategic actions assisting person being coached to visualize difference and determine actions to implement
Review—celebrate, or redirect: coach and person being coached review outcome of coaching, celebrate
successes, and confront and redirect if needed

Organizational Lead Perspective
• Webinars are preferred over calls– Data reports– Tools– Can demonstrate how to access websites and reporting databases
• Use your national faculty contact to help present material and/or offer encouragement and praise to the facilities
• Review key messages or information from the webinars• Ask individual facilities to talk about some of their special projects or
“Aha” moments• Think of some questions to ask and perhaps call on individual
facilities to keep the interaction lively• Silence can be painful, but you need to pause for a minute to give
facilities who may be bashful a chance to speak up9

• Attend coaching calls• Promote team participation in calls• Share facility successes, tips, and ideas you’ve used to
facilitate participation from your facility • Speak up about facility barriers in the project and ask for

• Serve as the team expert resource providing direction and guidance • Collaborate with Org Lead(s) in identifying and overcoming team
barriers• Engage in group discussions• Review facility reports and create action plans for ongoing issues• Participate in planning calls with the Org Lead(s) to help plan
agendas• Bring back relevant tools or latest research/information from the
project’s Advisory Council meetings and share on coaching calls• Notify Org Lead(s) if unable to attend coaching call and try to
reschedule or find a fill-in coach for that month

• HRET support provided for the first 4 months• Troubleshoot and answer project related questions• Help to identify relevant topics for coaching calls• Provide agenda templates, tools, and training• Highlight useful tools and reminders about training• Help to identify relevant topics, address data submissions and trends
and troubleshoot and answer questions from the teams on calls.

Engage Facility Team Leads in Calls• Circulate each month’s agenda well in advance• Keep in touch regarding scheduling changes, please do not cancel calls without
contacting your HRET Advisor (remember to also notify your faculty coach!)• Listen to your facility’s unit’s learning needs and create tailored learning
opportunities• Consider asking some of your leads to present on calls ahead of time; facilities
love to hear from each other
Call Participation is Required• Set expectations• Follow-up with those unable to attend• Maintain open communication about topic interests• Leave time in presentation for questions, pose questions
