Farm Bureau gives to local Farm School

GREENVILLE – The Montessori School has been in the community for many years and in recent years added the farm school. It allows students to have hands on experiences involving different aspects of agriculture, which is determined by the students.

Darke County Farm Bureau sees the value in fostering the growth and education of agriculture in schools. At a recent board meeting it was decided to donate $500

to the school’s Micro Economic Club at the Organization’s Annual Membership Kickoff held at the Shawnee Prairie Reserve.

Farm Bureau works on many public policy, regulatory and community building activities each year and depends on membership dues to carry out all these great projects. For more information on Farm Bureau and how you can become a member visit www.growwithfb.org.

Jordan Dill and Kale Conway, Montessori students, are shown with Darke County Farm Bureau President Matt Aultman.

OPHI: Creating Habitat in OhioGREENVILLE – Monarch

butterfly populations and the habitat they need are in decline across North America, Mexico and Canada. Ohio has been identified as a priority state for Monarch migration and fourth-generation Monarchs. Fourth-generation Monarchs are the individuals who will travel back to Mexico, spend the winter there, and then start their amazing life cycle all over again in the spring, ending back up in Ohio the next summer.

In May 2015, the National Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Bees and other Pollinators (The Pollinator Health Task Force) tasked all states to work through federal, state, public and

private actions in order to restore or create pollinator habitat with the goal of seven million acres across the United States over the next five years.

The Ohio Pollinator Habitat Initiative (OPHI) is meeting this challenge head-on, working with multiple partners throughout the state in order to achieve this goal. OPHI is a statewide network of diverse partners that work together to provide education, outreach, research, hands on conservation, native seed collection, and technical assistance to all that have an interest in pollinators and protecting our food supply.

The growing list of partners

include the Ohio Department of Transportation, American Electric Power, Pheasants Forever, Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife, The U.S. Department of Agriculture, The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Ecological Services Field Office, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Partners for Fish and Wildlife, Ohio Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Ohio Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, The Ohio State University Extension, The Ohio State University School of Environment and Natural Resources, Wright State University Biological Sciences, and the Levin Family Foundation.

It will take everyone working together to achieve their goal of providing pollinator and Monarch Butterfly habitat across the state of Ohio. It may be in your backyard garden, at your school, church or place of business. The potential is great

and opportunities exist almost everywhere. From big to small, these projects have the potential to help reverse the decline in Monarch and other pollinator populations. They are looking for partners to help grow OPHI. You or your organization can help them sustain their efforts through a variety of ways including social media and online communication, outreach and public education, technical support and assistance, financial support, hands-on habitat creation, and more.

They fully believe that through a collective effort they can reach these goals to provide a healthier future for Monarchs and Ohio pollinators.

Please feel free to contact them if you have any questions.

GREENVILLE – Matt Roberts, Associate Professor, OSU Extension and Grain Marketing Expert, announced at last week’s 2016 Ag Outlook meeting that the grain market outlook for the next couple of years does not look very positive and that if farmers are not treating their on-farm storage like a commercial elevator, they are “crazy”.

This was a perfect segue to an upcoming Grain Marketing Educational meeting to be held at Romer’s, Greenville, on March 10, 9 a.m. The meeting is being hosted and co-sponsored

for the opportunities and challenges you will be facing.

Jon will explain how on-farm storage combined with forward selling, market carry and basis appreciation can provide added income. He will also educate farmers how hedging with futures protects farmers from risk and how options can be a great addition to a farmers’ marketing tool box.

The meeting will be held at the Romer’s, 118 East Main St., Greenville, and will include a catered lunch.

Registration for the meeting

by Merchants Bank of Indiana, Ohio’s Country Journal and Ohio Ag Net and Ohio State University Extension, Darke County.

With corn and soybean prices trading at values near or below breakeven points, it’s important to develop a marketing plan that allows farmers the ability to try and capture potential profits while minimizing risk. Jon Scheve of Superior Feed Ingredients will be talking about what can influence markets in the upcoming year and how to better prepare your operation

is free (includes lunch) must be received by March 5. A registration flyer can be downloaded at http://go.osu.edu/grainmarketing or call the OSU Extension, Darke County office at 548-5215 to register by phone.

For more information about the meeting, contact Custer at [email protected].

For more detailed information, visit the Darke County OSU Extension website at www.darke.osu.edu, the OSU Extension Darke County Facebook page.

As a part of National FFA Week, Versailles FFA members planned special events. Versailles FFA members will also conduct a member breakfast, teacher breakfast and FFA meeting with officer election.

Versailles FFA participated in several outreach programs during the week including PALS, Companions, Middle School Ag, Junior High FFA, making blankets for Children’s Hospital with other members. [email protected] COUNTY – The crow

of a rooster, a couple of sheep or goats, maybe a cow or pig and a small garden – these small hobby farms seem to be popping up across Darke County and the country. Even the OSU Extension has an area dedicated to small farms on their website.

The OSU extension stated on their site, “The agricultural landscape of today is very different than it was 20 years ago. Farms are getting fewer in number and are growing in acreage. However, one segment of agriculture is growing rapidly. The ‘Small Farmer’ is a term used for individuals who are practicing agriculture on a very small amount of acreage, usually under 100 acres. These farmers are often new to agriculture and are looking to begin a different lifestyle. Based on increased information requests from these new and small farm owners, Ohio State University Extension has developed a comprehensive new and small farm ownership and management program.”

From chickens to cows, these newbie farmers are finding joy in raising animals or planting a garden. Numerous people have left their home in the city to learn more about the rural life. In order to sustain this lifestyle, they are finding outlets to sell eggs, goat milk or their animals for meat. Many are taking their produce and products to the Farmers’ Market.

Local resident Ned Unger is in his third year of raising chickens. His brother bought a chicken coop a few years ago and Unger quipped, “Is that for me?” It wasn’t at the time, but when his brother passed away Unger inherited to the chicken coop. Today he has 15 chickens and a rooster. He picks up about a dozen eggs every day. Instead of letting the eggs go to waste, Unger finds people that want fresh eggs. The money he makes off the eggs help pay for the chicken feed. According to Unger, he goes through approximately 50-pounds of feed each week. The cost is about $10 a week.

In addition to eggs, Unger has found there is a market for chicken manure. He has people

on a waiting list for his five-pound buckets of dried manure.

When the chickens get too old to lay eggs, they usually find a place in his freezer.

Unger may not be content with chickens. He is thinking about getting a couple of cows. Once they get to the point where they can be slaughtered he plans on selling one and putting the

other in his freezer. He believes selling one of the cows for meat will pay his expenses in raising both cows.

Are you interested in starting a hobby farm? Not to worry. Stop by a local feed store, visit the OSU Extension website or Google hobby farm to find all the information you will need.

Tri-Village competes in diagnostic contest

Garrett George and Josh Hollinger of the Tri-Village MVCTC FFA are shown working on a piece of equipment.

NEW MADISON – The Tri-Village MVCTC Agricultural & Industrial Diagnostic Team (formally Tractor Troubleshooting Team) consisting of Josh Hollinger and Garrett George took part in the County Contest held at Koenig Equipment in Greenville.

The contest serves as an authentic assessment designed to evaluate students’ knowledge in recognizing and repairing malfunctions in agricultural and/or industrial power equipment. The skills Agricultural Education students employ in this Contest are the same skills required

by agricultural and industrial technicians.

For the contest students complete a written examination and then two malfunctions will be placed on five different pieces of agricultural or industrial power equipment. Students will be expected to identify and repair these prescribed malfunctions. The malfunctions may include but are not limited to: fuel system, ignition system, electrical system, electronic system and hydraulic system.

All malfunctions will simulate realistic failures to the extent possible by the contest officials. The contest is scored on proper diagnostic procedures, safety practices, the use of tools and equipment, and the sequence of diagnostic procedure.

The chapter would like to thank everyone at Koenig’s for their help with the contest.

On Feb. 19 Josh and Garrett competed in the district contest hosted by Coldwater Tri-Star and placed 10th out of 22 teams.

Ansonia FFA hosts Leadership NightANSONIA – The Ansonia

FFA chapter recently hosted a Leadership Night. Members from other schools that attended were Tri- Village, Franklin Monroe, Versailles, and Greenville. At this meeting State President Matthew Klopfenstein visited the school once more to help host the event, and was accompanied by State Vice President Mary Buehler.

This year’s meeting was all about service opportunities, and how we can donate ourselves and our time to help benefit the community. The main issue the speakers tried to get attendees to donate their service and thoughts to was the issue of hunger.

After a short meet and greet and lecture on the purpose of the meeting, members were split into groups so as to further prove the importance of community service.

First these groups were given the task to describe what service meant to them. They were then asked the hard question on how they can serve in both a personal and worldly way. As inspiration to get their ideas flowing for these tough questions, members were asked to read short stories on how other people have served in both these areas.

Once everyone was given a chance to share their ideas, the groups’ minds were put to the test as they unscrambled a series of shocking facts about poverty and hunger in the world.

These facts were then discussed and organized from the most important to the least.

To finish the night, the groups were shuffled about into schools, and each FFA chapter was given the task on how their chapter could donate their time to help overcome hunger in our community. Members then joined together for pizza, and were given a great opportunity to mingle with others from other schools.

Ansonia FFA Officers carry guest speakers, Matthew Klopfenstein and Mary Buehler, at their Leadership Night. Shown are Nick Mayo, Skyler Marker, John Fischer, Megan Bergman, Madison Evers, Amber Bergman, and Robert Christman.

2-22-2016Diehl Cattle Company earns top honor

BRADFORD – The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) awarded Charlie, Jordan, and Scott Diehl, owners of Diehl Cattle Company of Bradford, the Seedstock Producer of the Year Award at the OCA awards banquet held Jan. 23, at the Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center in Lewis Center.

OCA and Farm World jointly sponsor the Seedstock Producer of the Year Award, which was created to recognize top beef seedstock producers in Ohio. The award was presented in a video that was sponsored by Darke County Veterinary Services and Fulton Road Genetics and can be found on OCA’s YouTube channel.

Diehl Cattle Company began with six registered Gelbvieh

cows, has grown to a herd of 200 cows, and today is one of the top seedstock producers in western Ohio. The bulls are marketed in Missouri at SeedstockPlus, a network comprised of cattlemen from around the country marketing elite breeding cattle. Charlie credited their success with the seedstock program to the networking opportunities they’ve had with others. The family also has a construction business, but in the future the family is hoping to rely more on the cattle operation. Scott said, “Our goal is to always try to improve our cow herd.” The Diehl family’s dedication to improving their herd has been recognized by cattlemen throughout Ohio and across the country.
