Summer inPhiladelphia!
The spotlight is on Philadelphia this summer! Themonth of June is filled with events of interest to theinternational organ community. And we, the localorgan community in Philadelphia, are at the center of itall!
Philadelphia is the proud home to an incredible wealth of world-renownedpipe organs. Among these are the Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ at theKimmel Center, the Wanamaker Organ in Macy’s Department Store, theLongwood Organ at Longwood Gardens, the Skinner organ in theChapel at Girard College, the Austin Organ at Irvine Auditorium on theUniversity of Pennsylvania campus, as well as numerous significant organs inchurches throughout the area. All of these organs will be featured in June’sfull schedule of organ events.
Beginning on Saturday, June 4, Friends of the Wanamaker Organ will hostthe annual Wanamaker Organ Day, offering many opportunities throughoutthe day to hear this unique and marvelous instrument. Of special interest isthe after-hours evening concert, providing those attending the rare experi-ence of hearing the organ without the hustle and bustle of commerce.wanamakerorgan.com
On Saturday, June 11, we celebrate the Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ inVerizon Hall with Kimmel Center Organ Day. A collaboration between theKimmel Center and the Philadelphia AGO Chapter, with support from theFred J. Cooper Restoration Fund, this day offers several hours of opportuni-ties to hear the largest mechanical action concert hall organ in the UnitedStates in a variety of roles – solo, ensemble, accompaniment to voices andfilms, etc. kimmelcenter.org/pdp-pages/201516/free-at-kimmel/6th-annual-fred-j-cooper-memorial-organ-day
In mid-June the world comes to Longwood Gardens for the 2016 LongwoodGardens International Organ Competition. Semi-final rounds and final roundsare scheduled for the 14th, 15th, and 18th. The ten competitors come fromthe United States, France, Australia, and New Zealand. On the two daysbetween rounds of competition, organ crawls are scheduled, giving the oppor-tunity to explore some area instruments. longwoodgardens.org/events-and-performances/events/international-organ-competition
At the end of June, the Organ Historical Society comes to Philadelphia for itsNational Convention, June 26 to July 2. A number of local organs will be fea-tured in concert throughout that week, including the famed Skinner organ inthe Chapel at Girard College and the Austin organ at Irvine Auditorium.www.organsociety.org/2016

We are hoping to create a team who will remind and assist ourmembers with their membership renewals. If interested, please
contact me or the dean.
Starting this fall our chapter is going to offer basic service playing andadvanced improvisation sessions on a monthly basis. Jeffrey Brillhart(Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church and Yale University) will be the
instructor for the advanced class. Sándor Kádár, FAGO, will be supervisingthe basic service playing sessions. Following these sessions, "grassrootsmeetings" will be held under the leadership of Mr. Kádár for those whowould like to learn more about any aspect of organ/service playing. Thesesessions may be of particular interest to those members who do not havean organ background, and would be interested in gaining basic knowledgein providing music for Sunday worship services.

OHS in Philadelphia
OHSLA – the OHS Library and Archives
In late March the Organ Historical Society received asplendid grant from the National Endowment for theHumanities to support planning, assessment and pilotactivities that will leverage the expertise of a range ofprofessionals with academic, cultural, technical, andcuratorial credentials. Recognized leaders in technicalfields of archival management, sound recordingspreservation and dissemination, digital collections man-agement and digital preservation and access will meetin early June. The grant also supports planning for sus-tainable growth and management of the OHS PipeOrgan Database. Upon the fulfillment of obligations out-lined in this first round, OHS is eligible to apply for alarge NEH implementation grant.
Relating to the larger grant, already 15,000 drawingsand around 1,000 organ contracts and specificationshave been digitized. Among the drawings and othermaterials is the newly acquired Brunzema Collection.The widow and family of Gerhard Brunzema havedonated his business papers and drawings to OHSLA.Prior to establishing his own business in Fergus,Ontario, Gerhard Brunzema served as tonal director atCasavant Frères, and was a partner member of Ahrendund Brunzema in East Friesland, Germany.
OHSLA and the PHILADELPHIA CHAPTER AGO
OHS will soon announce the move of its operations toVillanova. With this knowledge, the previousPhiladelphia AGO Dean, John Romeri, invited JimWeaver to speak about the range of OHS activities atthe January Jumpstart at Bryn Mawr PresbyterianChurch, a wonderful opportunity to begin meeting abroad range of Philadelphia organists and lovers of theorgan. Subsequently, Jeff Fowler and Dean DavidFurniss invited Weaver to a dinner at Christ Church,Ithan where past Philadelphia Deans and current chap-ter officers were honored. Many came to the dinner withAGO memorabilia, including historic photographs,newspaper articles, programs, and other materials. Itwas another splendid opportunity for Jim Weaver tomeet still more people in the AGO community, and toshare information about OHS activities. Now, OHSArchivist, Bynum Petty has been asked to join the AGOArchives Committee on May 14th at St. Paul’s LutheranChurch in Glenside at 10am. We expect these meet-ings to bring us ever closer to friendship and collabora-tion with AGO.

Over the past century, several attempts have beenmade to create a chapter archive preserving ourhistory. Some of our chapter’s archives were
donated to the Philadelphia Free Library years ago.Some have migrated from Dean to Dean. Some arelost, and some may be waiting to be found.
Last fall I was asked by the then Dean, John Romeri,to head up a new effort to establish an archive for thechapter. Excitement was centered over the prospectthat this incarnation of the project appears to holdmore promise.
As you probably know, the Organ Historical Society ismoving to Stoneleigh, the Haas family estate inVillanova. In moving to the neighborhood, OHS iseager to enter into a symbiotic relationship with thechapter. The hope is for our chapter to work alongsideOHS in their endeavors and for OHS to be both aresource and a home for our archive.
The chapter hosted a dinner on March 6 to kick-off thearchive project and to honor past Deans. Invitationswere extended to long time chapter members, who likeformer Deans, have institutional knowledge and possi-bly hold artifacts vital to the development of ourarchives. James Weaver, Executive Director of theOrgan Historical Society was the guest speaker.
Among other things, the most significant items con-tributed at the dinner were the minutes and treasurerreports from Executive Committee Meetings. They tella story. These were…

Tuesday Noontime Concerts return tothe Church of the Loving Shepherd atBournelyf, West Chester, for May
events. Recitals will be presented on the 2-manual tracker organ by Darron Wissinger,New Hampshire.
Bournelyf(“spring of life”) is a 20-acre formerPenn land grant farm, now home to Churchof the Loving Shepherd as well as BournelyfSpecial Camp and other meetings. Thechapel that houses the organ is a converted1740 stone barn. The plaster-over-stonewalls, black walnut floors, and expansivecubic airspace create a warm acoustic thatis appreciated for frequent chamber music
offerings in the series Chamber Music at Bournelyf,as well as during services. In May everyone has achance to also experience solo organ music in thisunique setting.
A reception will follow each program. Audiencemembers are warmly invited to bring a fuller lunchto enjoy before or after each program by the pond,labyrinth or butterfly garden.
