Joel E. Cohen has stated that the simplicity of the model makes it usefulfor very short-term predictions and of not much use for predictions beyond 10 or 20 years ( HowMany People Can The Earth Support , 1995). Antony Flew - in his introduction to the Penguin Books
publication of Malthus' essay (1st edition) - argued a "certain limited resemblance" between Malthus'law of population to laws of Newtonian mechanics.

The number 70 comes from the observation that the natural log of 2 is approximately 0.7, bymultiplying this by 100 we obtain 70. To find the doubling time we divide the natural log of 2 by thegrowth rate. To find the time it takes to increase by a factor of 3 we would use the natural log of 3,approximately 1.1.

The Malthusian growth model is the direct ancestor of the logistic function. Pierre Francois Verhulst first published his logistic growth function in 1838 after he had read Malthus' An Essay on the

The Reverend[1]Thomas Robert MalthusFRS (14 February 1766 – 29 December 1834)[2] was an
Englishscholar , influential in political economy and demography.[3][4] Malthus popularised theeconomic theory of rent.[5]
Malthus has become widely known for his theories concerning population and its increase or decrease in response to various factors. The six editions of his An Essay on the Principle of
Population, published from 1798 to 1826, observed that sooner or later population gets checked byfamine and disease. He wrote in opposition to the popular view in 18th-century Europe that sawsociety as improving and in principle as perfectible.[6] William Godwin and the Marquis deCondorcet, for example, believed in the possibility of almost limitless improvement of society. So, ina more complex way, did Jean-Jacques Rousseau, whose notions centered on the goodness of manand the liberty of citizens bound only by the social contract —a form of popular sovereignty.
Malthus thought that the dangers of population growth would preclude endless progress towards autopian society: "The power of population is indefinitely greater than the power in the earth to
produce subsistence for man".[7] As an Anglican clergyman, Malthus saw this situation as divinelyimposed to teach virtuous behaviour.[8] Believing that one could not change human nature, Malthuswrote:
"Must it not then be acknowledged by an attentive examiner of the histories of
mankind, that in every age and in every State in which man has existed, or does now
exist
That the increase of population is necessarily limited by the means of subsistence,
That population does invariably increase when the means of subsistence increase, and,
That the superior power of population is repressed, and the actual population kept equal to the meansof subsistence, by misery and vice."[9]
Malthus placed the longer-term stability of the economy above short-term expediency. He criticisedthe Poor Laws,[10] and (alone among important contemporary economists) supported the Corn Laws,which introduced a system of taxes on British imports of wheat.[11] He thought these measures wouldencourage domestic production, and so promote long-term benefits.[12]
Malthus became hugely influential, and controversial, in economic, political, social and scientificthought. Many of those whom subsequent centuries term evolutionary biologists read him,[13] notablyCharles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace, for each of whom Malthusianism became an intellectualstepping-stone to the idea of natural selection.[14][15] Malthus remains a writer of great significance andcontroversy.
Biography
The sixth of seven children of Daniel and Henrietta Malthus,[16] Thomas Robert Malthus grew up inThe Rookery, a country house near Westcott in Surrey. Petersen describes Daniel Malthus as "agentleman of good family and independent means... [and] a friend of David Hume and Jean-JacquesRousseau".[17] The young Malthus received his education at home in Bramcote, Nottinghamshire, andthen at the DissentingWarrington Academy. He entered Jesus College, Cambridge in 1784. There hetook prizes in English declamation, Latin and Greek , and graduated with honours, Ninth Wrangler inmathematics.[18] He took the MA degree in 1791, and was elected a Fellow of Jesus College,

Cambridge two years later .[5] In 1797, he took orders[19] and in 1798[5] became an Anglican countrycurate at Okewood near Albury in Surrey.[20]
His portrait,[21] and descriptions by contemporaries, present him as tall and good-looking, but with ahare-lip and cleft palate.[22] The cleft palate affected his speech: such birth defects had occurred
before amongst his relatives.[23] Malthus apparently[original research?
] refused to have his portrait painted
until 1833 because of embarrassment over the hare-lip.
Malthus married his cousin, Harriet, on April 12, 1804, and had three children: Henry, Emily andLucy. In 1805 he became Professor of History and Political Economy at the East India CompanyCollege (now known as Haileybury) in Hertfordshire.[24] His students affectionately referred to him as"Pop" or "Population" Malthus. In 1818 Malthus became a Fellow of the Royal Society.

An Essay on the Principle of PopulationMain article: An Essay on the Principle of Population
Between 1798 and 1826 Malthus published six editions of his famous treatise, An Essay on the Principle of Population, updating each edition to incorporate new material, to address criticism, andto convey changes in his own perspectives on the subject. He wrote the original text in reaction to theoptimism of his father and his father's associates (notably Rousseau) regarding the futureimprovement of society. Malthus also constructed his case as a specific response to writings of William Godwin (1756–1836) and of the Marquis de Condorcet (1743–1794).
Malthus regarded ideals of future improvement in the lot of humanity with skepticism, consideringthat throughout history a segment of every human population seemed relegated to poverty. Heexplained this phenomenon by arguing that population growth generally expanded in times and inregions of plenty until the size of the population relative to the primary resources caused distress:
"Yet in all societies, even those that are most vicious, the tendency to a virtuous
attachment is so strong that there is a constant effort towards an increase of
population. This constant effort as constantly tends to subject the lower classes of the
society to distress and to prevent any great permanent amelioration of their condition".

"The way in which these effects are produced seems to be this. We will suppose themeans of subsistence in any country just equal to the easy support of its inhabitants.
The constant effort towards population... increases the number of people before themeans of subsistence are increased. The food therefore which before supported seven
millions must now be divided among seven millions and a half or eight millions. Thepoor consequently must live much worse, and many of them be reduced to severedistress. The number of labourers also being above the proportion of the work in themarket, the price of labour must tend toward a decrease, while the price of provisionswould at the same time tend to rise. The labourer therefore must work harder to earnthe same as he did before. During this season of distress, the discouragements tomarriage, and the difficulty of rearing a family are so great that population is at a stand.In the mean time the cheapness of labour, the plenty of labourers, and the necessity of an increased industry amongst them, encourage cultivators to employ more labourupon their land, to turn up fresh soil, and to manure and improve more completely whatis already in tillage, till ultimately the means of subsistence become in the sameproportion to the population as at the period from which we set out. The situation of the
labourer being then again tolerably comfortable, the restraints to population are in

some degree loosened, and the same retrograde and progressive movements withrespect to happiness are repeated".

Malthus also saw that societies through history had experienced at one time or another epidemics,famines, or wars: events that masked the fundamental problem of populations overstretching their resource limitations:
"The power of population is so superior to the power of the earth to produce
subsistence for man, that premature death must in some shape or other visit the
human race. The vices of mankind are active and able ministers of depopulation. They
are the precursors in the great army of destruction, and often finish the dreadful work
themselves. But should they fail in this war of extermination, sickly seasons, epidemics,
pestilence, and plague advance in terrific array, and sweep off their thousands and tens
of thousands. Should success be still incomplete, gigantic inevitable famine stalks in the
rear, and with one mighty blow levels the population with the food of the world".

Proposed solutions
Malthus argued that two types of checks hold population within resource limits: positive checks,which raise the death rate; and preventive ones, which lower the birth rate. The positive checksinclude hunger, disease and war; the preventive checks, abortion, birth control, prostitution,
postponement of marriage and celibacy.[26] Regarding possibilities for freeing man from these limits,Malthus argued against a variety of imaginable solutions. For example, he satirically criticized thenotion that agricultural improvements could expand without limit:
"We may be quite sure that among plants, as well as among animals, there is a limit to
improvement, though we do not exactly know where it is. It is probable that the
gardeners who contend for flower prizes have often applied stronger dressing without
success. At the same time, it would be highly presumptuous in any man to say, that he
had seen the finest carnation or anemone that could ever be made to grow. He might
however assert without the smallest chance of being contradicted by a future fact, that
no carnation or anemone could ever by cultivation be increased to the size of a large
cabbage; and yet there are assignable quantities much greater than a cabbage. No
man can say that he has seen the largest ear of wheat, or the largest oak that could
ever grow; but he might easily, and with perfect certainty, name a point of magnitude,
at which they would not arrive. In all these cases therefore, a careful distinction shouldbe made, between an unlimited progress, and a progress where the limit is merely
undefined."
He also commented on the notion that Francis Galton later called eugenics:
"It does not... by any means seem impossible that by an attention to breed, a certain
degree of improvement, similar to that among animals, might take place among men.
Whether intellect could be communicated may be a matter of doubt; but size, strength,
beauty, complexion, and perhaps longevity are in a degree transmissible... As the
human race, however, could not be improved in this way without condemning all the
bad specimens to celibacy, it is not probable that an attention to breed should everbecome general".

In the second and subsequent editions Malthus put more emphasis on moral restraint . By that hemeant the postponement of marriage until people could support a family, coupled with strict celibacy (sexual abstinence) until that time.[citation needed
] "He went so far as to claim that moral restraint on awide scale was the best means—indeed, the only means—of easing the poverty of the lower classes."[27] This plan appeared consistent with virtue, economic gain and social improvement.[citation
needed ]
This train of thought counterpoints Malthus' stand on public assistance to the poor. He proposed thegradual abolition of poor laws by gradually reducing the number of persons qualifying for relief.Relief in dire distress would come from private charity.[28] He reasoned that poor relief acted againstthe longer-term interests of the poor by raising the price of commodities and undermining theindependence and resilience of the peasant.[citation needed
] In other words, the poor laws tended to "createthe poor which they maintain."[29]
It offended Malthus that critics claimed he lacked a caring attitude toward the situation of the poor. Inthe 1798 edition his concern for the poor shows in passages such as the following:
Nothing is so common as to hear of encouragements that ought to be given to
population. If the tendency of mankind to increase be so great as I have represented it
to be, it may appear strange that this increase does not come when it is thus
repeatedly called for. The true reason is, that the demand for a greater population is
made without preparing the funds necessary to support it. Increase the demand for
agricultural labour by promoting cultivation, and with it consequently increase the
produce of the country, and ameliorate the condition of the labourer, and no
apprehensions whatever need be entertained of the proportional increase of population.
An attempt to effect this purpose in any other way is vicious, cruel, and tyrannical, and
in any state of tolerable freedom cannot therefore succeed.
In an addition to the 1817 edition he wrote:
I have written a chapter expressly on the practical direction of our charity; and in
detached passages elsewhere have paid a just tribute to the exalted virtue of
benevolence. To those who have read these parts of my work, and have attended to the
general tone and spirit of the whole, I willingly appeal, if they are but tolerably candid,
against these charges ... which intimate that I would root out the virtues of charity and
benevolence without regard to the exaltation which they bestow on the moral dignity of
our nature...[30]

and Karl Marx,[32]
argued that Malthus did not fully recognize thehuman capacity to increase food supply. On this subject, however, Malthus had written: "The main
peculiarity which distinguishes man from other animals, in the means of his support, is the power which he possesses of very greatly increasing these means."[33]
On religion
As a believer and a clergyman, Malthus held that God had created an inexorable tendency to human population growth for a moral purpose, with the constant harsh threat of poverty and starvationdesigned to teach the virtues of hard work and virtuous behaviour.[8]
The issue has occurred to many believers: why should an omnipotent and caring God permit theexistence of wickedness and suffering in the world? Malthus's theodicy answers that evil energizes
mankind in the struggle for good. "Had population and food increased in the same ratio, it is probablethat man might never have emerged from the savage state".[34] The principle of population

represented more than the difference between an arithmetic and a geometric series; it provided thespur for constructive activity:
"Evil exists in the world not to create despair, but activity." [35]
Malthus saw "the infinite variety of nature" which "cannot exist without inferior parts, or apparent
blemishes"[36] Such diversity and struggle functioned to enable the development of improved forms.Without such a contest, no species would feel impelled to improve itself.[citation needed
] Without the testof struggle, and the failure or even death of some, no successful development of the population as awhole would take place.[citation needed ] For Malthus, evil invigorates good and death replenishes life.[citation
needed ] Malthus painted a picture of fecundity in the face of enduring resource-scarcity, in whichadversity and evil can stimulate beneficial outcomes.[37]
Demographics and wages
Malthus saw poverty as a positive check to population growth, believing people without means lesslikely to have children whom they could not support.[38] Similarly, as wages increased, the birth-rate could be expected to increase while the death-rate decreased. Consequently, wage increases caused
populations to grow. Malthus believed that this inevitably led to economic oscillations betweenrelative prosperity and distress, though the oscillations were not always apparent:
"A circumstance which has, perhaps, more than any other, contributed to conceal this oscillationfrom common view, is the difference between the nominal and real price of labour. It very rarelyhappens that the nominal price of labour universally falls; but we well know that it frequentlyremains the same, while the nominal price of provisions has been gradually rising. This, indeed, willgenerally be the case, if the increase of manufactures and commerce be sufficient to employ the newlabourers that are thrown into the market, and to prevent the increased supply from lowering themoney-price.10 But an increased number of labourers receiving the same money-wages willnecessarily, by their competition, increase the money-price of corn. This is, in fact, a real fall in the
price of labour; and, during this period, the condition of the lower classes of the community must be
gradually growing worse. But the farmers and capitalists are growing rich from the real cheapness of labour. Their increasing capitals enable them to employ a greater number of men; and, as the
population had probably suffered some check from the greater difficulty of supporting a family, thedemand for labour, after a certain period, would be great in proportion to the supply, and its pricewould of course rise, if left to find its natural level; and thus the wages of labour, and consequentlythe condition of the lower classes of society, might have progressive and retrograde movements,though the price of labour might never nominally fall.
"In savage life, where there is no regular price of labour, it is little to be doubted that similar oscillations took place. When population has increased nearly to the utmost limits of the food, all the
preventive and the positive checks will naturally operate with increased force. Vicious habits withrespect to the sex will be more general, the exposing of children more frequent, and both the
probability and fatality of wars and epidemics will be considerably greater; and these causes will probably continue their operation till the population is sunk below the level of the food; and then thereturn to comparative plenty will again produce an increase, and, after a certain period, its further
progress will again be checked by the same causes."[39]

Other works
1800: The present high price of provisions
In this work, his first published pamphlet, Malthus argues against the notion prevailing in his localethat the greed of intermediaries caused the high price of provisions. Instead, Malthus says that thehigh price stems from the Poor Laws which "increase the parish allowances in proportion to the priceof corn". Thus, given a limited supply, the Poor Laws force up the price of daily necessities. Then heconcludes by saying that in time of scarcity such Poor Laws, by raising the price of corn moreevenly, produce a beneficial effect.[41]
1814: Observations on the effects of the Corn Laws
Although government in Britain had regulated the prices of corn (grain in general, e.g. wheat) sincethe 17th century[citation needed
], the Corn Laws originated in 1815. At the end of the Napoleonic Wars thatyear, Parliament passed legislation banning the importation of foreign corn into Britain untildomestic corn cost 80 shillings per quarter . The high price caused the cost of food to increase and socaused great distress among the working classes in the towns. This led to serious rioting in Londonand to the "Peterloo Massacre" (1819) in Manchester .[42][43]
In this pamphlet, printed during the parliamentary discussion, Malthus tentatively supported the free-traders. He argued that given the increasing expense of raising British corn, advantages accrued fromsupplementing it from cheaper foreign sources. This view he changed the following year.
1815: The Nature of Rent
Rent constitutes a major concept in economics. David Ricardo, Malthus' contemporary and friendlyrival, defined a theory of rent in his Principles of Political Economy (1817). Ricardo regarded rent asvalue in excess of real production—something caused by incident of ownership rather than byfundamental economic value imparted by free and equal trade. For Ricardo, rent represented a kindof negative money that landlords could pull out of the production of the land by measure of land'sscarcity.[44]
Contrary to this concept of rent, Malthus states that rent cannot exist except in the case of surplus.Also he says that rent, once accumulated, becomes subsequently a source of capital re-investment,causing positive effects through the growth and accumulation of productive wealth. He proposes rentto be a kind of surplus.
1815: The policy of restricting the importation of Grain
Malthus emerged as the only economist of note to support customsduty on imported grain.[45]
He had changed his mind from the previous year, siding now with the protectionists. Foreign laws, henoted, often prohibit or raise taxes on the export of corn in lean times, which meant that the Britishfood supply could become captive to foreign politics. By encouraging domestic production, Malthusargued, the Corn Laws would guarantee British self-sufficiency in food.[46]

Surplus Theory
Whereas Malthus's main body of work presents a theory of irremediable, if not untreatable, scarcity,three of his other works present a theory of surplus: The Nature of Rent,Principles of political economy,[48] and Definitions in Political Economy.[48]
The Nature of Rent proposes rent as a kind of surplus, whereas the previous general definition of rent
portrayed it as an societal economic loss caused by personal financial gain derived from landscarcity.[49]

Principles of Political Economy and Definitions in Political Economydefend[48] the concept of thegeneral glut, a theory that surplus value can present a problem. Rent as surplus, and a glut or surplusof goods as problems differ somewhat or stand in contradistinction to Malthus's earlier scarcitytheory of The Principle of Population.
Reactions to his ideasMalthus became subject to extreme personal criticism. People who knew nothing about his privatelife criticised him both for having no children and for having too many. In 1819, Shelley, beratingMalthus as a priest, called him "a eunuch and a tyrant" (though the Church of England does notrequire celibacy, and Malthus had married in 1804).[50] Marx repeated the lie, adding that Malthus hadtaken the vow of celibacy, and called him "superficial", "a professional plagiarist", "the agent of thelanded aristocracy", "a paid advocate" and "the principal enemy of the people." [51] In the 20th centuryan editor of the Everyman edition of Malthus claimed that Malthus had practised population control
by begetting eleven girls.[52] (In fact, Malthus fathered two daughters and one son.) Garrett Hardin provides an overview of these personal insults.[53]
Early responsesWilliam Godwin criticized Malthus's criticisms of his own arguments in his book On Population(1820).[54]
Other theoretical and political critiques of Malthus and Malthusian thinking emerged soon after the publication of the first Essay on Population, most notably in the work of the reformistindustrialistRobert Owen, of the essayist William Hazlitt (1807)[55] and of the economist NassauWilliam Senior ,[56] and moralist William Cobbett. Note also True Law of Population (1845) by
politician Thomas Doubleday, an adherent of Cobbett's views.
John Stuart Mill strongly defended the ideas of Malthus in his 1848 work, Principles of Political Economy (Book II, Chapters 11-13). Mill considered the criticisms of Malthus made thus far to have
been superficial.The American economist Henry Charles Carey rejected Malthus's argument in his magnum opus of 1858-59, The Principles of Social Science. Carey maintained that the only situation in which themeans of subsistence will determine population growth is one in which a given society is notintroducing new technologies or not adopting forward-thinking governmental policy, and that
population regulated itself in every well-governed society, but its pressure on subsistencecharacterized the lower stages of civilization.
Marxist views
Another strand of opposition to Malthus's ideas started in the middle of the 19th century with thewritings of Friedrich Engels (Outlines of a Critique of Political Economy, 1844) and Karl Marx
(Capital , 1867). Engels and Marx argued that what Malthus saw as the problem of the pressure of population on the means of production actually represented the pressure of the means of productionon population. They thus viewed it in terms of their concept of the reserve army of labour . In other words, the seeming excess of population that Malthus attributed to the seemingly innate dispositionof the poor to reproduce beyond their means actually emerged as a product of the very dynamic of capitalist economy.
Engels called Malthus's hypothesis "...the crudest, most barbarous theory that ever existed, a systemof despair which struck down all those beautiful phrases about love thy neighbour and worldcitizenship." [57] Engels also predicted [58] that science would solve the problem of an adequate foodsupply.
In the Marxist tradition, Lenin sharply criticized Malthusian theory and its neo-Malthusian version,[59]
calling it a "reactionary doctrine" and "an attempt on the part of bourgeois ideologists to exonerate

capitalism and to prove the inevitability of privation and misery for the working class under anysocial system".
Other dissenters
Some 19th-century economists[who?] believed that improvements in finance, manufacturing and
science rendered some of Malthus's warnings implausible. They had in mind the division andspecialization of labour, increased capital investment, and increased productivity of the land due tothe introduction of science into agriculture (note the experiments of Justus Liebig and of Sir JohnBennet Lawes). Even in the absence of improvement in technology or of increase of capitalequipment, an increased supply of labour may have a synergistic effect on productivity thatovercomes the law of diminishing returns. As American land-economist Henry George observed withcharacteristic piquancy in dismissing Malthus: "Both the jayhawk and the man eat chickens; but themore jayhawks, the fewer chickens, while the more men, the more chickens." In the 20th century,those who regarded Malthus as a failed prophet of doom included an editor of Nature, John Maddox.[60]
Economist Julian Lincoln Simon has criticised Malthus's conclusions.[61] He notes that despite the
predictions of Malthus and of the Neo-Malthusians, massive geometric population growth in the 20thcentury did not result in a Malthusian catastrophe. Many factors may have contributed: generalimprovements in farming methods (industrial agriculture), mechanization of work (tractors), theintroduction of high-yield varieties of wheat and other plants (Green Revolution), the use of
pesticides to control crop pests. Each played a role.[62] The enviro-scepticBjørn Lomborg presentsdata showing that the environment has actually improved[relevant? – discuss
].[63] Calories produced per day per capita globally went up 23% between 1960 and 2000, despite the world population doublingduring that period.[64] Anthropologist Eric Ross depicts Malthus's work as a rationalization of thesocial inequities produced by the Industrial Revolution, anti-immigration movements, the eugenicsmovement[clarification needed
] and the various international development movements.[65]
InfluenceEarly influence
Malthus belonged amongst a group of high-quality intellectuals employed by the British East IndiaCompany. They included both James Mill and his son, John Stuart Mill;[3]Jeremy Bentham had amajor influence on the policy of the company, though not as an employee. Malthus became arespected member of this elite group, and his position as professor at the Haileybury training college,which he held until his death in 1834, gave his theories some influence over Britain's administrationof India. As an indication of the group's influence, note Lord William Bentinck's remark to JamesMill at a farewell dinner before he left to take up the post of Governor-General of India (in office:1828-1835): "It is you that will be Governor-General".[66]
According to Malthus's biographer William Peterson, British Prime Minister William Pitt theYounger (in office: 1783–1801 and 1804–1806), upon reading the work of Malthus, withdrew a Billhe had introduced that called for the extension of Poor Relief . Concerns about Malthus's theoryhelped promote the idea of a national population census in the UK. Government official JohnRickman became instrumental in the carrying out of the first modern British census in 1801, under Pitt's administration. In the 1830s Malthus's writings strongly influenced Whig reforms whichoverturned Tory paternalism and brought in the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834.
Before Malthus, commentators had regarded high fertility as an economic advantage, because itincreased the number of workers available to the economy. Malthus, however, looked at fertility froma new perspective and convinced most economists that even though high fertility might increase thegross output, it tended to reduce output per capita. A number of other notable economists, such as
David Ricardo (whom Malthus knew personally) and Alfred Marshall admired Malthus and/or cameunder his influence. Malthus took pride in the fact that some of the earliest converts to his population

theory included Archdeacon William Paley, whose Natural Theology first appeared in 1802.Ironically, given Malthus's own opposition to contraception, his work exercised a strong influence onFrancis Place (1771–1854), whose neo-Malthusian movement became the first to advocatecontraception. Place published his Illustrations and Proofs of the Principles of Population in 1822.
Later influence
At Haileybury, Malthus developed a theory of demand-supply mismatches which he called gluts.Considered ridiculous at the time, his theory foreshadowed later theories about the Great Depression of the 1930s, and the works of economist and Malthus-admirer John Maynard Keynes (1883–1946).
Malthusian ideas continue to have considerable influence. Paul R. Ehrlich has written several books predicting famine as a result of population increase: The Population Bomb (1968); Population,resources, environment: issues in human ecology (1970, with Anne Ehrlich); The end of affluence(1974, with Anne Ehrlich); The population explosion (1990, with Anne Ehrlich). In the late 1960sEhrlich predicted that hundreds of millions would die from a coming overpopulation-crisis in the1970s. Other examples of applied Malthusianism include the 1972 book The Limits to Growth (published by the Club of Rome) and the Global 2000 report to the then President of the United
States of AmericaJimmy Carter. Science-fiction author Isaac Asimov issued many appeals for population-control reflecting the perspective articulated by people from Robert Malthus through PaulR. Ehrlich.
More recently[update], a school of "neo-Malthusian" scholars has begun to link population andeconomics to a third variable, political change and political violence, and to show how the variablesinteract. In the early 1980s, James Goldstone linked population variables to the English Revolution of 1640-1660[citation needed ] and David Lempert devised a model of demographics, economics, and politicalchange in the multi-ethnic country of Mauritius. Goldstone has since modeled other revolutions bylooking at demographics and economics[citation needed ] and Lempert has explained Stalin's purges and theRussian Revolution of 1917 in terms of demographic factors that drive political economy. Ted Robert Gurr has also modeled political violence, such as in the Palestinian territories and in Rwanda/Congo
(two of the world's regions of most rapidly growing population) using similar variables in severalcomparative cases. These approaches suggest that political ideology follows demographic forces.
Malthus, sometimes regarded as the founding father of modern demography,[68] continues to inspireand influence futuristic visions, such as those of K Eric Drexler relating to space advocacy andmolecular nanotechnology. As Drexler put it in Engines of Creation (1986): "In a sense, openingspace will burst our limits to growth, since we know of no end to the universe. Nevertheless, Malthuswas essentially right."
The Malthusian growth model now bears Malthus's name. The logistic function of Pierre FrancoisVerhulst (1804–1849) results in the S-curve. Verhulst developed the logistic growth model favored
by so many critics of the Malthusian growth model in 1838 only after reading Malthus's essay.
Malthus has also inspired retired physics professor, Albert Bartlett, to lecture over 1,500 times on"Arithmetic, Population, and Energy", promoting sustainable living and explaining the mathematicsof overpopulation.

Despite use of the term "Malthusian catastrophe" by detractors such as economist Julian Simon (1932–1998), Malthus himself did not write that mankind faced an inevitable future catastrophe.Rather, he offered an evolutionary social theory of population dynamics as it had acted steadily

throughout all previous history.[71] Eight major points regarding population dynamics appear in the1798 Essay[citation needed ]:

5. because productivity increases cannot maintain the potential rate of population growth, population requires strong checks to keep parity with the carrying-capacity
6. individual cost/benefit decisions regarding sex, work, and children determine the expansion or contraction of population and production
7. checks will come into operation as population exceeds subsistence-level
8. the nature of these checks will have significant effect on the larger sociocultural system— Malthus points specifically to misery, vice, and poverty
Malthusian social theory influenced Herbert Spencer's idea of the survival of the fittest,[72] and themodern ecological-evolutionary social theory of Gerhard Lenski and Marvin Harris[citation needed ].Malthusian ideas have thus contributed to the canon of socioeconomic theory.
The first Director-General of UNESCO, Julian Huxley, wrote of The crowded world in his Evolutionary Humanism (1964), calling for a world population policy. Huxley openly criticisedcommunist and Roman Catholic attitudes to birth control, population control and overpopulation.
Biology
Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace each read and acknowledged the role played by Malthusin the development of their own ideas. Darwin referred to Malthus as "that great philosopher", [73] andsaid: "This is the doctrine of Malthus, applied with manifold force to the animal and vegetable
kingdoms, for in this case there can be no artificial increase of food, and no prudential restraint frommarriage".[74] Darwin also wrote:
"In October 1838... I happened to read for amusement Malthus on Population... it at once struck me
that under these circumstances favourable variations would tend to be preserved, and unfavourable
ones to be destroyed. The result of this would be the formation of new species."

Wallace stated:
"But perhaps the most important book I read was Malthus's Principles of Population... It was the first
great work I had yet read treating of any of the problems of philosophical biology, and its main principles remained with me as a permanent possession, and twenty years later gave me the long-

Ronald Fisher commented sceptically on Malthusianism as a basis for a theory of natural selection.[76]
Fisher did not deny[citation needed ] Malthus's basic premises, but emphasised the role of fecundity.[77]JohnMaynard Smith doubted that famine functioned as the great leveller, as portrayed by Malthus, but healso accepted the basic premises:
"[A population] cannot increase logarithmically for ever. Sooner or later, a shortage of resources
must bring the increase to a halt. It was this insight which led both Darwin and Wallace acquired byreading... Malthus, and which led to the idea of natural selection."

A Malthusian catastrophe (also phrased Malthusian check , Malthusian crisis, Malthusiandisaster, Malthusian fallacy, Malthusian nightmare, or Malthusian theory of population) wasoriginally foreseen to be a forced return to subsistence-level conditions once population growth hadoutpaced agricultural production. Later formulations consider economic growth limits as well. Theterm is also commonly used in discussions of oil depletion. Based on the work of political
economistThomas Malthus (1766–1834), theories of Malthusian catastrophe are very similar to theIron Law of Wages. The main difference is that the Malthusian theories predict what will happenover several generations or centuries, whereas the Iron Law of Wages predicts what will happen in amatter of years and decades.
An August 2007 science review in The New York Times raised the claim that the IndustrialRevolution had enabled the modern world to break out of the Malthusian growth model,[1] while afront page Wall Street Journal article in March 2008 pointed out various limited resources whichmay soon limit human population growth because of a widespread belief in the importance of

Malthus' worries centred on the production of food not being able to keep up with
population growth.
In 1798, Thomas Malthus published An Essay on the Principle of Population, describing his theoryof quantitative development of human populations:
I think I may fairly make two postulata. First, that food is necessary to the existence of
man. Secondly, that the passion between the sexes is necessary and will remain nearly
in its present state. These two laws, ever since we have had any knowledge of mankind,
appear to have been fixed laws of our nature, and, as we have not hitherto seen any
alteration in them, we have no right to conclude that they will ever cease to be what
they now are... Assuming then my postulata as granted, I say, that the power of
population is indefinitely greater than the power in the earth to produce subsistence for
man. Population, when unchecked, increases in a geometrical ratio.

In a series that is increasing in geometric progression, the ratio of any two successive members of thesequence is a constant: the larger the population, the faster it will grow in absolute terms. In the caseof population highlighted by Malthus, the more breeding pairs, the more offspring, and so forth (theexponential growth model). He contrasted this to the arithmetic progression food production, any twosuccessive members of the sequence have a constant difference: the amount of extra food producednext year is independent of the amount of food produced this year (the linear growth model).
As illustrated, if unchecked over a sufficient period of time, and if the ratio between successive
sequence members is larger than 1.0, then exponential growth will always outrun linear growth.Malthus saw the difference between population growth and resource growth as being analogous to

Even when a population inhabits a new habitat – such as the American continent at Malthus' time, or when recovering from wars and epidemic plagues – the growth of population will eventually reach the limit of the resource base. Neo-Malthusian theory argues that unless at or below subsistence level, a population's fertility willtend to move upwards. Assume for example that a country has 10 breeding groups. Over time thiscountry's fertility will approach that of its fastest growing group in the same way that
will eventually come to resemble
regardless of how large the constant a is or how small the constant b is. Under subsistence conditionsthe fastest growing group is likely to be that group progressing most rapidly in agriculturaltechnology. However, in above-subsistence conditions the fastest growing group is likely to be theone with the highest fertility. Therefore the fertility of the country will approach that of its mostfertile group. This, however, is only part of the problem.
In any group some individuals will be more pro-fertility in their beliefs and practices than others.According to neo-Malthusian theory, these pro-fertility individuals will not only have more children,
but also pass their pro-fertility on to their children, meaning a constant selection for pro-fertilitysimilar to the constant natural selection for fertility genes (except much faster because of greater diversity). According to neo-Malthusians, this increase in fertility will lead to hyperexponential
population growth that will eventually outstrip growth in economic production. This appears to makeany sort of voluntary fertility control futile, in the long run. Neo-Malthusians argue that althoughadult immigrants (who, at the very least, arrive with human capital) contribute to economic
production, there is little or no increase in economic production from increased natural growth andfertility. Neo-Malthusians argue that hyperexponential population growth has begun or will beginsoon in developed countries. To this can be added that farmland deteriorates with use. Some areaswhere there was intensive agriculture in classic times (i.e., the feudal era) had already declined in
population because their farmland was worn out, long before he wrote.
At the time Malthus wrote, and for 150 years thereafter, most societies had populations at or beyondtheir agricultural limits.[citation needed
] After World War II, mechanized agriculture produced a dramaticincrease in productivity of agriculture and the so-called Green Revolution greatly increased cropyields, expanding the world's food supply while lowering food prices. In response, the growth rate of the world's population accelerated rapidly, resulting in predictions by Paul R. Ehrlich, SimonHopkins,[4] and many others of an imminent Malthusian catastrophe. However, populations of mostdeveloped countries grew slowly enough to be outpaced by gains in productivity. By 1990,agricultural production appeared to begin peaking in several world regions.[5]
By the early 21st century, many technologically developed countries had passed through thedemographic transition, a complex social development encompassing a drop in total fertility rates in

supply, low fertility rates, and stable (in some cases even declining) populations. In some cases, population growth occurs due to increasing life expectancies, even though fertility rates are belowreplacement. For example, As of 2008[update], Spain has approximately 4.6 km2 of arable land or
permanent crops per 1,000 residents, and its average fertility rate is well below replacement level (1.3children/woman). Its population has grown less than 50% in the last 40 years.[6] The corresponding
ratio for Nigeria is only 2.1 km2
of arable land or crops per 1,000 residents; Nigerian total fertilityrate is 5.0 children/woman, and its population has more than tripled during the same 40 years. TheMalthusian catastrophe appears to have been temporarily averted in Spain, although the Neo-Malthusian theory argues that the situation is only temporary; on the other hand, a significant part of
population of Nigeria lives near subsistence levels.
David Pimentel and Ron Nielsen, working independently, determined that the human population as awhole has passed the numerical point where all can live in comfort, and that we have entered a stagewhere many of the world's citizens and future generations are trapped in misery.[7] There is evidencethat a catastrophe is underway as of at least the 1990s; for example, by the year 2000, children indeveloping countries were dying at the rate of approximately 11,000,000 per annum from strictly
preventable diseases.[8][9] These data suggest that, by the standard of misery, the catastrophe is
underway. The term 'misery' can generally be construed as: high infant mortality, low standards of sanitation, malnutrition, inadequate drinking water , widespread diseases, war, and political unrest.
Regarding famines, data demonstrate the world's food production has peaked in some of the veryregions where food is needed the most. For example, in South Asia, approximately half of the landhas been degraded such that it no longer has the capacity for food production.[9] In China there has
been a 27% irreversible loss of land for agriculture, and it continues to lose arable land at the rate of 2,500 square kilometres per year .[10] In Madagascar , at least 30% of the land previously regarded asarable is irreversibly barren. On the other hand, recent data show the number of overweight people inthe world now outnumbers that of malnourished, and the rising tide of obesity continues to expand in
both rich and poor countries.[11]
On the assumption that the demographic transition is now spreading from the developed countries toless developed countries, the United Nations Population Fund estimates that human population may peak in the late 21st century rather than continue to grow until it has exhausted available resources. [12]
Some have expressed doubt about the validity of the UN projections, claiming that they are below the projections by others.[9]The most important point is that none of the projections show the populationgrowth beginning to decline before 2050. Indeed, the UN "high" estimate does not decline at all, evenout to 2300, indicating the potential for a Malthusian catastrophe.[12] The actual growth curve of thehuman population is another issue. In the latter part of the 20th century, many argued that it followedexponential growth; however, a more recent view is that the growth in the last millennium has beenfaster, at a superexponential (possibly hyperbolic, double-exponential, or hyper-exponential) rate.[13]
Alternatively, the apparently exponential portion of the human population growth curve may actuallyfit the lower limb of a logistic curve, or a section of a Lotka–Volterra cycle.

Historians have estimated the total human population on earth back to 10,000 BC.[14] The figure onthe right shows the trend of total population from 1800 to 2005, and from there in three projectionsout to 2100 (low, medium, and high).[12] The second figure shows the annual growth rate over thesame period. If population growth were exactly exponential, then the growth rate would be a flat line.The fact that it was increasing from 1920 to 1960 indicates faster-than-exponential growth over this
period. However, the growth rate has been decreasing since then, and is projected to continuedecreasing.[15] The United Nations population projections out to 2100 (the red, orange, and greenlines) show a possible peak in the world's population occurring as early as 2040 in the mostoptimistic scenario, and by 2075 in the "medium" scenario.

The graph of annual growth rates (below) does not appear exactly as one would expect for long-termexponential growth. For exponential growth it should be a straight line at constant height, whereas infact the graph from 1800 to 2005 is dominated by an enormous hump that began about 1920, peakedin the mid-1960s, and has been steadily eroding away for the last 40 years. The sharp fluctuation
between 1959 and 1960 was due to the combined effects of the Great Leap Forward and a naturaldisaster in China.[15] Also visible on this graph are the effects of the Great Depression, the two worldwars, and possibly also the 1918 flu pandemic.
Though short-term trends, even on the scale of decades or centuries, cannot prove or disprove theexistence of mechanisms promoting a Malthusian catastrophe over longer periods, the prosperity of asmall fraction of the human population at the beginning of the 21st century, and the debatability of ecological collapse made by Paul R. Ehrlich in the 1960s and 1970s, has led some people, such aseconomist Julian L. Simon, to question its inevitability.[16]
A 2004 study by a group of prominent economists and ecologists, including Kenneth Arrow and PaulEhrlich[17] suggests that the central concerns regarding sustainability have shifted from population
growth to the consumption/savings ratio, due to shifts in population growth rates since the 1970s.Empirical estimates show that public policy (taxes or the establishment of more complete propertyrights) can promote more efficient consumption and investment that are sustainable in an ecologicalsense; that is, given the current (relatively low) population growth rate, the Malthusian catastrophecan be avoided by either a shift in consumer preferences or public policy that induces a similar shift.However, some contend that the Malthusian catastrophe is not imminent. A 2002 study[18] by the UNFood and Agriculture Organization predicts that world food production will be in excess of the needsof the human population by the year 2030; however, that source also states that hundreds of millionswill remain hungry (presumably due to economic realities and political issues).

Another way of applying the Malthusian theory is to substitute other resources, such as sources of energy for food, and energy consumption for population. (Since modern food production andlogistics is energy and resource intensive, this is not a big jump. Most of the criteria for applying thetheory are still satisfied.) Since energy consumption is increasing much faster than population, andmost energy comes from non-renewable sources, the catastrophe appears more imminent, though
perhaps not as certain, than when considering food and population continue to behave in a manner contradicting Malthus's assumptions.
Retired physics professor Albert Bartlett, a modern-day Malthusian, has lectured on "Arithmetic,Population and Energy" over 1,500 times. He published an article entitled Thoughts on Long-Term
Energy Supplies: Scientists and the Silent Lie in Physics Today (July 2004). For a response toBartlett's argument, see two articles on energy and population in Physics Today, November 2004,[19]
and following letters to the editor. A further way of analyzing resource limitation is the dwindlingarea for storage of soil contaminants and water pollution. The high rate of increase in toxic chemicals
in the environment (especially persistent organic chemicals and endocrine altering chemicals) iscreating a circumstance of resource limitation (e.g. safe potable water and safe arable land).
Criticism
Ester Böserup wrote in her book The Conditions of Agricultural Growth: The Economics of AgrarianChange under Population Pressure, that population levels determine agricultural methods, rather than agricultural methods determining population (via food supply). A major point of her book is that"necessity is the mother of invention". Julian Simon was one of many economists who challenged theMalthusian catastrophe, citing (1) the existence of new knowledge, and educated people to takeadvantage of it, and (2) "economic freedom", that is, the ability of the world to increase productionwhen there is a profitable opportunity to do so.[20] The economist Henry George argued that Malthus
didn't provide any evidence of a natural tendency for a population to overwhelm its ability to providefor itself. George wrote that even the main body of Malthus' work refuted this theory; that examplesgiven show social causes for misery, such as "ignorance and greed... bad government, unjust laws, or war," rather than insufficient food production.[21]

A population is all the organisms that both belong to the same species and live in the samegeographical area. The area that is used to define the population is such that inter-breeding is possible
between any pair within the area and more probable than cross-breeding with individuals from other areas. Normally breeding is substantially more common within the area than across the border .[1]

According to papers published by the United States Census Bureau, the world population hit 6.5 billion (6,500,000,000) on 24 February 2006. The United Nations Population Fund designated 12October 1999 as the approximate day on which world population reached 6 billion. This was about12 years after world population reached 5 billion in 1987, and 6 years after world population reached5.5 billion in 1993. The population of some countries, such as Nigeria and China, is not even known
to the nearest million,[4]
so there is a considerable margin of error in such estimates.[5]

due to medical advances and substantial increases in agricultural productivity, particularly beginningin the 1960s,[7] made by the Green Revolution.[8] In 2007 the United Nations Population Division
projected that the world's population will likely surpass 10 billion in 2055.[9] In the future, world population has been expected to reach a peak of growth, from there it will decline due to economicreasons, health concerns, land exhaustion and environmental hazards. There is around an 85% chancethat the world's population will stop growing before the end of the century.[citation needed
] There is a 60% probability that the world's population will not exceed 10 billion people before 2100, and around a15% probability that the world's population at the end of the century will be lower than it is today.For different regions, the date and size of the peak population will vary considerably.[10]
The population pattern of less-developed regions of the world in recent years has been marked by
gradually declining birth rates following an earlier sharp reduction in death rates.[11]
This transitionfrom high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates is often referred to as the demographictransition.[11]

Human population control is the practice of artificially altering the rate of growth of a human population. Historically, human population control has been implemented by limiting the population's birth rate, usually by government mandate, and has been undertaken as a response tofactors including high or increasing levels of poverty, environmental concerns, religious reasons, andoverpopulation. While population control can involve measures that improve people's lives by givingthem greater control of their reproduction, some programs have exposed them to exploitation.[12]

Population dynamics is the branch of life sciences that studies short- and long-term changes in thesize and age composition of populations, and the biological and environmental processes influencingthose changes. Population dynamics deals with the way populations are affected by birth and deathrates, and by immigration and emigration, and studies topics such as ageing populations or
population decline.
The mathematical model often viewed as the best to govern the population dynamics of any givenspecies is called the exponential model.[1] With the exponential model, the rate of change of anygiven population is proportional to the already existing population.[2]

History
Population dynamics has traditionally been the dominant branch of mathematical biology, which hasa history of more than 210 years, although more recently the scope of mathematical biology hasgreatly expanded. The first principle of population dynamics is widely regarded as the exponentiallaw of Malthus, as modelled by the Malthusian growth model. The early period was dominated bydemographic studies such as the work of Benjamin Gompertz and Pierre François Verhulst in theearly 19th century, who refined and adjusted the Malthusian demographic model.
A more general model formulation was proposed by F.J. Richards in 1959, further expanded bySimon Hopkins, in which the models of Gompertz, Verhulst and also Ludwig von Bertalanffy arecovered as special cases of the general formulation. The Lotka–Volterra predator-prey equations areanother famous example. The computer gameSimCity and the MMORPGUltima Online, amongothers, tried to simulate some of these population dynamics.
In the past 30 years, population dynamics has been complemented by evolutionary game theory,developed first by John Maynard Smith. Under these dynamics, evolutionary biology concepts maytake a deterministic mathematical form. Population dynamics overlap with another active area of research in mathematical biology: mathematical epidemiology, the study of infectious diseaseaffecting populations. Various models of viral spread have been proposed and analysed, and provideimportant results that may be applied to health policy decisions.

In fisheries and wildlife management, population is affected by three dynamic rate functions.
• Natality or birth rate, often recruitment, which means reaching a certain size orreproductive stage. Usually refers to the age a fish can be caught and counted innets
• Population growth rate, which measures the growth of individuals in size andlength. More important in fisheries, where population is often measured inbiomass.
• Mortality, which includes harvest mortality and natural mortality. Naturalmortality includes non-human predation, disease and old age.

All of these are measured to determine the harvestable surplus, which is the number of individualsthat can be harvested from a population without affecting long term stability, or average populationsize. The harvest within the harvestable surplus is considered compensatory mortality, where theharvest deaths are substituting for the deaths that would occur naturally. It started in Europe. Harvest
beyond that is additive mortality, harvest in addition to all the animals that would have died naturally.These terms are not the universal good and evil of population management, for example, in deer, the
DNR are trying to reduce deer population size overall to an extent, since hunters have reduced buck competition and increased deer population unnaturally.
Intrinsic rate of increase
The rate at which a population increases in size if there are no density-dependent forces regulatingthe population is known as the intrinsic rate of increase.

Where (dN/dt) is the rate of increase of the population and N is the population size, r is the intrinsicrate of increase. This is therefore the theoretical maximum rate of increase of a population per individual . The concept is commonly used in insect population biology to determine how
environmental factors affect the rate at which pest populations increase.[3]

The Lotka–Volterra predator–prey model was initially proposed by Alfred J. Lotka “in the theory of autocatalytic chemical reactions” in 1910.[4][5] This was effectively the logistic equation,[6] which was
originally derived by Pierre François Verhulst.[7]
In 1920 Lotka extended, via Kolmogorov (seeabove), the model to "organic systems" using a plant species and a herbivorous animal species as anexample [8] and in 1925 he utilised the equations to analyse predator-prey interactions in his book on
biomathematics[9] arriving at the equations that we know today. Vito Volterra, who made a statisticalanalysis of fish catches in the Adriatic [5] independently investigated the equations in 1926.[10][11]
C.S. Holling extended this model yet again, in two 1959 papers, in which he proposed the idea of functional response.[12][13] Both the Lotka-Volterra model and Holling's extensions have been used tomodel the moose and wolf populations in Isle Royale National Park ,[14] which with over 50 published
papers is one of the best studied predator-prey relationships.

The Lotka–Volterra equations have a long history of use in economic theory; their initial applicationis commonly credited to Richard Goodwin in 1965[15] or 1967.[16][17] In economics, links are betweenmany if not all industries; a proposed way to model the dynamics of various industries has been byintroducing trophic functions between various sectors,[18] and ignoring smaller sectors by consideringthe interactions of only two industrial sectors.[19]
Physical meanings of the equations
The Lotka-Volterra model makes a number of assumptions about the environment and evolution of the predator and prey populations:
1. The prey population finds ample food at all times.
2. The food supply of the predator population depends entirely on the preypopulations.
3. The rate of change of population is proportional to its size.
4. During the process, the environment does not change in favour of one speciesand the genetic adaptation is sufficiently slow.
As differential equations are used, the solution is deterministic and continuous. This, in turn, impliesthat the generations of both the predator and prey are continually overlapping.[20]

The prey are assumed to have an unlimited food supply, and to reproduce exponentially unless
subject to predation; this exponential growth is represented in the equation above by the term αx. Therate of predation upon the prey is assumed to be proportional to the rate at which the predators andthe prey meet; this is represented above by βxy. If either x or y is zero then there can be no predation.
With these two terms the equation above can be interpreted as: the change in the prey's numbers isgiven by its own growth minus the rate at which it is preyed upon.
Predators
The predator equation becomes:
In this equation, δxy represents the growth of the predator population. (Note the similarity to the predation rate; however, a different constant is used as the rate at which the predator populationgrows is not necessarily equal to the rate at which it consumes the prey). γy represents the loss rate of the predators due to either natural death or emigration; it leads to an exponential decay in the absenceof prey.
Hence the equation expresses the change in the predator population as growth fueled by the foodsupply, minus natural death.

The equations have periodic solutions which do not have a simple expression in terms of the usualtrigonometric functions. However, a linearization of the equations yields a solution similar to simpleharmonic motion[21] with the population of predators following that of prey by 90°.
An example problem
Suppose there are two species of animals, a baboon (prey) and a cheetah (predator). If the initialconditions are 80 baboons and 40 cheetahs, one can plot the progression of the two species over time.The choice of time interval is arbitrary.

These graphs clearly illustrate a serious problem with this as a biological model: in each cycle, the baboon population is reduced to extremely low numbers yet recovers (while the cheetah population
remains sizeable at the lowest baboon density). Given chance fluctuations, discrete numbers of individuals, and the family structure and lifecycle of baboons, the baboons actually go extinct and byconsequence the cheetahs as well. This modelling problem has been called the "atto-fox problem",[22]
an atto-fox being an imaginary 10−18 of a fox, in relation to rabies modelling in the UK.
Dynamics of the system
In the model system, the predators thrive when there are plentiful prey but, ultimately, outstrip their food supply and decline. As the predator population is low the prey population will increase again.These dynamics continue in a cycle of growth and decline.

ABSTRAK
Kualitas air secara umum menunjukkan mutu atau kondisi air yang dikaitkan dengan suatu kegiatan
atau keperluan tertentu. Sedangkan kuantitas menyangkut jumlah air yang dibutuhkan manusia dalamkegiatan tertentu.Air adalah materi esensial didalam kehidupan, tidak ada satupun makhluk hidup didunia ini yang tidak membutuhkan air.Sebagian besar tubuh manusia itu sendiri terdiri dari air.Tubuhmanusia rata-rata mengandung air sebanyak 90 % dari berat badannya. Tubuh orang dewasa, sekitar 55-60%, berat badan terdiri dari air, untuk anak-anak sekitar 65% dan untuk bayi sekitar 80% .Air
bersih dibutuhkan dalam pemenuhan kebutuhan manusia untuk melakukan segala kegiatanmereka.Sehingga perlu diketahui bagaimana air dikatakan bersih dari segi kualitas dan bisadigunakan dalam jumlah yang memadai dalam kegiatan sehari-hari manusia. Ditinjau dari segikualitas, ada bebarapa persyaratan yang harus dipenuhi, di antaranya kualitas fisik yang terdiri atas
bau, warna dan rasa, kulitas kimia yang terdiri atas pH, kesadahan, dan sebagainya serta kualitas biologi diman air terbebas dari mikroorganisme penyebab penyakit. Agar kelangsungan hidup
manusia dapat berjalan lancar, air bersih juga harus tersedia dalam jumlah yang memadai sesuaidengan aktifitas manusia pada tempat tertentu dan kurun waktu tertentu.

Air sebagai materi esensial dalam kehidupan tampak dari kebutuhan terhadap air untuk keperluansehari-hari di lingkungan rumah tangga ternyata berbeda-beda di setiap tempat, setiap tingkatankehidupan atau setiap bangsa dan negara. Semakin tinggi taraf kehidupan seseorang semakinmeningkat pula kebutuhan manusia akan air. Jumlahpenduduk dunia setiap hari bertambah, sehinggamengakibatkan jumlah kebutuhan air (Suriawiria,1996: 3).
Berdasarkan Keputusan Menteri Kesehatan Republik Indonesia Nomor 1405/menkes/sk/xi/2002tentang Persyaratan Kesehatan Lingkungan Kerja Perkantoran dan industri terdapat pengertian
mengenai Air Bersih yaitu air yang dipergunakan untuk keperluan sehari-hari dan kualitasnyamemenuhi persyaratan kesehatan air bersih sesuai dengan peraturan perundang-undangan yang berlaku dan dapatdiminum apabila dimasak.

Bagi manusia kebutuhan akan air sangat mutlak karena sebenarnya zat pembentuk tubuh manusiasebagian besar terdiri dari air yang jumlahnya sekitar 73% dari bagian tubuh. Air di dalam tubuhmanusia berfungsi sebagai pengangkut dan pelarut bahan-bahan makanan yang penting bagitubuh.Sehingga untuk mempertahankan kelangsungan hidupnya manusia berupaya mendapatkan air yang cukup bagi dirinya (Suharyono, 1996).Dalam menjalankan fungsi kehidupan sehari-hari
manusia amat tergantung pada air, karena air dipergunakan pula untuk mencuci, membersihkan peralatan, mandi, dan lain sebagainya. Manfaat lain dari air berupa pembangkit tenaga, irigasi, alattransportasi, dan lain sebagainya yang sejenis dengan ini. Semakin maju tingkat kebudayaanmasyarakat maka penggunaan air makin meningkat.
Kebutuhan air yang paling utama bagi manusia adalah air minum.Menurut ilmu kesehatan setiaporang memerlukan air minum hidup 2-3 minggu tanpa makan tetapi hanya dapat bertahan 2-3 haritanpa air minum (Suripin, 2002).
Air merupakan faktor penting dalam pemenuhan kebutuhan vital bagi mahluk hidup diantaranyasebagai air minum atau keperluan rumah tangga lainnya.Air yang digunakan harus bebas dari kuman
penyakit dan tidak mengandung bahan beracun. Sumber air minum yang memenuhi syarat sebagai air baku air minum jumlahnya makin lama makin berkurang sebagai akibat ulah manusia sendiri baik sengaja maupun tidak disengaja.
Upaya pemenuhan kebutuhan air oleh manusia dapat mengambil air dari dalam tanah, air permukaan,atau langsung dari air hujan. Dari ke tiga sumber air tersebut, air tanah yang paling banyak digunakankarena air tanah memiliki beberapa kelebihan di banding sumber-sumber lainnya antara lain karenakualitas airnya yang lebih baik serta pengaruh akibat pencemaran yang relatif kecil.
Akan tetapi air yang dipergunakan tidak selalu sesuai dengan syarat kesehatan, karena sering ditemuiair tersebut mengandung bibit ataupun zat-zat tertentu yang dapat menimbulkan penyakit yang justrumembahayakan kelangsungan hidup manusia.
Berdasarkan masalah di atas, maka perlu diketahui kualitas air yang bisa digunakan untuk kebutuhanmanusia tanpa menyebabkan akibat buruk dari penggunaan air tersebut. Kebutuhan air bagi manusiaharus terpenuhi baik secara kualitas maupun kuantitasnya agar manusia mampu hidup danmenjalankan segala kegiatan dalam kehidupannya.
Ditinjau Dari Segi Kualitas (Mutu) Air Secara langsung atau tidak langsung pencemaran akan berpengaruh terhadap kualitas air. Sesuai dengan dasar pertimbangan penetapan kualitas air minum,usaha pengelolaan terhadap air yang digunakan oleh manusia sebagai air minum berpedoman padastandar kualitas air terutama dalam penilaian terhadap produk air minum yang dihasilkannya,maupun dalam merencanakan
sistem dan proses yang akan dilakukan terhadap sumber daya air (Razif, 2001:4).
Persyaratan Kualitas Air
Parameter Kualitas Air yang digunakan untuk kebutuhan manusia haruslah air yang tidak tercemar atau memenuhi persyaratan fisika, kimia, dan biologis.
1. Persyaratan Fisika Air
Air yang berkualitas harus memenuhi persyaratan fisika sebagai berikut:
1. Jernih atau tidak keruh
Air yang keruh disebabkan oleh adanya butiran-butiran koloid dari tanah liat.Semakin banyak kandungan koloid maka air semakin keruh.
1. Tidak berwarna
Air untuk keperluan rumah tangga harus jernih.Air yang berwarna berarti mengandung bahan-bahan
lain yang berbahaya bagi kesehatan.1. Rasanya tawar

Secara fisika, air bisa dirasakan oleh lidah. Air yang terasa asam, manis, pahit atau asin menunjukanair tersebut tidak baik. Rasa asin disebabkan adanya garam-garam tertentu yang larut dalam air,sedangkan rasa asam diakibatkan adanya asam organik maupun asam anorganik.
1. Tidak berbau
Air yang baik memiliki ciri tidak berbau bila dicium dari jauh maupun dari dekat.Air yang berbau busuk mengandung bahan organik yang sedang mengalami dekomposisi (penguraian) olehmikroorganisme air.
1. Temperaturnya normal
Suhu air sebaiknya sejuk atau tidak panas terutama agar tidak terjadi pelarutan zat kimia yang ada pada saluran/pipa, yang dapat membahayakan kesehatan dan menghambat pertumbuhan mikroorganisme.
1. Tidak mengandung zat padatan
Air minum mengandung zat padatan yang terapung di dalam air.
1. Persyaratan Kimia
Kandungan zat atau mineral yang bermanfaat dan tidak mengandung zat beracun.
1) pH (derajat keasaman)
Penting dalam proses penjernihan air karena keasaman air pada umumnya disebabkan gas Oksidayang larut dalam air terutama karbondioksida. Pengaruh yang menyangkut aspek kesehatan dari pada
penyimpangan standar kualitas air minum dalam hal pH yang lebih kecil 6,5 dan lebih besar dari 9,2akan tetapi dapat menyebabkan beberapa senyawa kimia berubah menjadi racun yang sangatmengganggu kesehatan.
2) Kesadahan
Kesadahan ada dua macam yaitu kesadahan sementara dan kesadahanvnonkarbonat
(permanen).Kesadahan sementara akibat keberadaan Kalsium dan Magnesium bikarbonat yangdihilangkan dengan memanaskan air hingga mendidih atau menambahkan kapur dalamair.Kesadahan nonkarbonat (permanen) disebabkan oleh sulfat dan karbonat, Chlorida dan Nitrat dariMagnesium dan Kalsium disamping Besi dan Alumunium.Konsentrasi kalsium dalam air minumyang lebih rendah dari 75 mg/l dapat menyebabkan penyakit tulang rapuh, sedangkan konsentrasiyang lebih tinggi dari 200 mg/l dapat menyebabkan korosifitas pada pipa-pipa air. Dalam jumlahyang lebih kecil magnesium dibutuhkan oleh tubuh untuk pertumbuhan tulang, akan tetapi dalam
jumlah yang lebih besar 150 mg/l dapat menyebabkan rasa mual.
3) Besi
Air yang mengandung banyak besi akan berwarna kuning dan menyebabkan
rasa logam besi dalam air, serta menimbulkan korosi pada bahan yang terbuat dari metal. Besimerupakan salah satu unsur yang merupakan hasil pelapukan batuan induk yang banyak ditemukandiperairan umum. Batas maksimal yang terkandung didalam air adalah 1,0 mg/l
4) Aluminium
Batas maksimal yang terkandung didalam air menurut Peraturan Menteri Kesehatan No 82 / 2001yaitu 0,2 mg/l. Air yang mengandung banyak aluminium menyebabkan rasa yang tidak enak apabiladikonsumsi.
5) Zat organik
Larutan zat organik yang bersifat kompleks ini dapat berupa unsur hara makanan maupun sumber energi lainnya bagi flora dan fauna yang hidup di

6) Sulfat
Kandungan sulfat yang berlebihan dalam air dapat mengakibatkan kerak air yang keras pada alatmerebus air (panci / ketel)selain mengakibatkan bau dan korosi pada pipa. Sering dihubungkandengan penanganan dan pengolahan air bekas.
7) Nitrat dan nitritPencemaran air dari nitrat dan nitrit bersumber dari tanah dan tanaman. Nitrat dapat terjadi baik dari
NO2 atmosfer maupun dari pupuk-pupuk yang
digunakan dan dari oksidasi NO2 oleh bakteri dari kelompok Nitrobacter. Jumlah Nitrat yang lebih besar dalam usus cenderung untuk berubah menjadi Nitrit yang dapat bereaksi langsung denganhemoglobine dalam daerah membentuk methaemoglobine yang dapat menghalang perjalanan oksigendidalam tubuh.
Chlorida
Dalam konsentrasi yang layak, tidak berbahaya bagi manusia.Chlorida dalam jumlah kecil
dibutuhkan untuk desinfektan namun apabila berlebihan dan berinteraksi dengan ion Na+ dapatmenyebabkan rasa asin dan korosi pada pipa air.
9) Zink atau Zn Batas maksimal Zink yang terkandung dalam air adalah 15 mg/l. penyimpanganterhadap standar kualitas ini menimbulkan rasa pahit, sepet, dan rasa mual. Dalam jumlah kecil, Zink merupakan unsur yang penting untuk metabolisme, karena kekurangan Zink dapat menyebabkanhambatan pada pertumbuhan anak.
1. 3. Persyratan mikrobiologis
Persyaratan mikrobiologis yangn harus dipenuhi oleh air adalah sebagai berikut:
1. Tidak mengandung bakteri patogen, missalnya: bakteri golongan coli; Salmonellatyphi, Vibrio cholera dan lain-lain. Kuman-kuman ini mudah tersebar melalui air.
2. Tidak mengandung bakteri non patogen seperti: Actinomycetes, Phytoplanktoncolifprm, Cladocera dan lain-lain. (Sujudi,1995)
1. COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand)
COD yaitu suatu uji yang menentukan jumlah oksigen yang dibutuhkan oleh
bahan oksidan misalnya kalium dikromat untuk mengoksidasi bahan-bahan organik yang terdapatdalam air (Nurdijanto, 2000 : 15). Kandungan COD dalam air bersih berdasarkan Peraturan MenteriKesehatan RI No 82 / 2001
mengenai baku mutu air minum golongan B maksimum yang dianjurkan adalah 12 mg/l. apabila nilaiCOD melebihi batas dianjurkan, maka kualitas
air tersebut buruk.1. BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand)
Adalah jumlah zat terlarut yang dibutuhkan oleh organisme hidup untuk
memecah bahan – bahan buangan didalam air (Nurdijanto, 2000 : 15). Nilai
BOD tidak menunjukkan jumlah bahan organik yang sebenarnya tetepi hanya mengukur secararelatif jumlah oksigen yang dibutuhkan.Penggunaan oksigen yang rendah menunjukkankemungkinan air jernih, mikroorganisme tidak tertarik menggunakan bahan organik makin rendahBOD maka kualitas air minum tersebut semakin baik. Kandungan BOD dalam air bersih menurutPeraturan Menteri Kesehatan RI No 82 / 2001 mengenai baku mutu air dan air minum golongan Bmaksimum yang dianjurkan adalah 6 mg/l

Kualitas air yang digunakan masyarakat harus memenuhi syarat kesehatan agar dapat terhindar dari berbagai penyakit maupun gangguang kesehatan yang dapat disebabkan oleh air. Untuk mengetahuikualitas air tersebut, perlu dilakukan pemeriksaan laboratorium yang mencakup antara lain
pemeriksaan bakteriologi air, meliputi Most Probable Number (MPN) dan angka kuman.Pemeriksaan MPN dilakukan untuk pemeriksaan kualitas air minum, air bersih, air badan, air
pemandian umum, air kolam renang dan pemeriksaan angka kuman pada air PDAM.Khusus untuk air minum, disyaratkan bahwa tidak mengandung bakteri patogen, misalnya bakterigolongan E. coli, Salmonella typhi, Vibrio cholera.Kuman-kuman ini mudah tersebar melalui air (Transmitted by water ) dan tidak mengandung bakteri non-patogen, seperti Actinomycetes danCladocera (Soewarno. 2002).

bersih/air minum bagi masyarakat adalah untuk mencegah penyakit yang dibawah olehair.Penyediaan air bersih selain kuantitas kualitasnya pun harus memenuhi standar yang berlaku.Air minum yang memenuhi baik kuantitas maupun kualitas sangat membantu menurunkan angkakesakitan penyakit perut terutama penyakit diare. Sehingga pengawasan terhadap kualitas air minumagar tetap memenuhi syarat-syarat kesehatan berdasarkan Kepmenkes RI No
907/Menkes/SK/VII/2002 tentang syarat-syarat dan pengawasan kualitas air minum (Depkes, 2002)

Ditinjau dari jumlah atau kuantitas air yang dibuthkan manusia, kebutuhan dasar air bersih adalah jumlah air bersih minimal yang perlu disediakan agar manusia dapat hidup secara layak yaitu dapatmemperoleh air yang diperlukan untuk melakukan aktivitas dasar sehari-hari (Sunjaya dalam Karsidi,1999 : 18). Ditinjau dari segi kuantitasnya, kebutuhan air rumah tangga menurut Sunjaya adalah:
1. Kebutuhan air untuk minum dan mengolah makanan 5 liter / orang perhari.
b. Kebutuhan air untuk higien yaitu untuk mandi dan membersihkan dirinya 25 – 30 liter / orang perhari.
c. Kebutuhan air untuk mencuci pakaian dan peralatan 25 – 30 liter / orang perhari.
d. Kebutuhan air untuk menunjang pengoperasian dan pemeliharaan fasilitas sanitasi atau pembuangan kotoran 4 – 6 liter / orang perhari, sehingga total pemakaian perorang adalah 60 – 70liter / hari di kota. Banyaknya pemakaian air tiap harinya untuk setiap rumah tangga berlainan, selain
pemakaian air tiap harinya tidak tetap banyak keperluan air bagi tiap orang atau setiap rumah tanggaitu masih tergantung dari beberapa faktor diantaranya adalah pemakaian air di daerah panas akanlebih banyak dari pada di daerah dingin, kebiasaan hidup dalam rumah tangga misalnya ingin rumahdalam keadaan bersih selalu dengan mengepel lantai dan menyiram halaman, keadaan sosial rumah
tangga semakin mampu atau semakin tinggi tingkat sosial kehidupannya semakin banyak menggunakan air serta pemakaian air dimusim panas akan lebih banyak dari pada dimusim hujan.
Sumber air merupakan salah satu komponen utama yang ada pada suatu sistem penyediaan air bersih,karena tanpa sumber air maka suatu system penyediaan air bersih tidak akan berfungsi (Sutrisno,2000 : 13). Macam-macam sumber air yang dapat di manfaatkan sebagai sumber air minum sebagai
berikut :
1. Air laut
Mempunyai sifat asin, karena mengandung garam NaCl.Kadar garam NaCl dalam air laut 3 %dengan keadaan ini maka air laut tidak memenuhi syarat untuk diminum.
2. Air Atmosfer
Untuk menjadikan air hujan sebagai air minum hendaknya pada waktu menampung air hujan mulaiturun, karena masih mengandung banyak kotoran. Selain itu air hujan mempunyai sifat agresif terutama terhadap pipa-pipa penyalur maupun bak-bak reservoir, sehingga hal ini akan mempercepatterjadinya korosi atau karatan. Juga air ini mempunyai sifat lunak, sehingga akan boros terhadap
pemakaian sabun.
3. Air Permukaan
Adalah air hujan yang mengalir di permukaan bumi. Pada umumnya air permukaan ini akanmendapat pengotoran selama pengalirannya, misalnya oleh lumpur, batang-batang kayu, daun-daun,kotoran industri dan lainnya. Air permukaan ada dua macam yaitu air sungai dan air rawa.Air sungaidigunakan sebagai air minum, seharusnya melalui pengolahan yang sempurna, mengingat bahwa air sungai ini pada umumnya mempunyai derajat pengotoran yang tinggi. Debit yang tersedia untuk memenuhi kebutuhan akan air minum pada umumnya dapat mencukupi. Air rawa kebanyakan
berwarna disebabkan oleh adanya zat-zat organik yang telah membusuk, yang menyebabkan warnakuning coklat, sehingga untuk pengambilan air sebaiknya dilakukan pada kedalaman tertentu ditengah-tengah.
4. Air tanah
Air tanah adalah air yang berada di bawah permukaan tanah didalam zone jenuh dimana tekananhidrostatiknya sama atau lebih besar dari tekanan atmosfer (Suyono,1993 :1).
5. Mata air
Yaitu air tanah yang keluar dengan sendirinya ke permukaan tanah dalam hampir tidak terpengaruholeh musim dan kualitas atau kuantitasnya sama dengan air dalam.

Sistem penyediaan air bersih meliputi besarnya komponen pokok antara lain: unit sumber baku, unit pengolahan, unit produksi, unit transmisi, unit distribusi dan unit konsumsi, yaitu (1)Unit sumber air baku merupakan awal dari sistem penyediaan air bersih yang mana pada unit ini sebagai penyediaanair baku yang bisa diambil dari air tanah, air permukaan, air hujan yang jumlahnya sesuai denganyang diperlukan. (2) Unit pengolahan air memegang peranan penting dalam upaya memenuhi
kualitas air bersih atau minum, dengan pengolahan fisika, kimia, dan bakteriologi, kualitas air bakuyang semula belum memenuhi syarat kesehatan akan berubah menjadi air bersih atau minum yangaman bagi manusia. (3). Unit produksi adalah salah satu dari sistem penyediaan air bersih yangmenentukan jumlah produksi air bersih atau minum yang layak didistribusikan ke beberapa tandonatau reservoir dengan sistem pengaliran gravitasi atau pompanisasi. (4). Unit produksi merupakanunit bangunan yang mengolah jenis-jenis sumber air menjadi air bersih.
Adapun beberapa sumber air yang dapat diolah untuk mendapatkan air bersih, yaitu sumur Dangkal/Dalam Pengolahan tidak lengkap hanya pengolahan Fe, Mn, dan pembubuhan desinfektan,sungai Pengolahan lengkap bila kekeruhannya tinggi > 50.danau NTU (Nephelometric TurbidityUnit) Pengolahan tidak lengkap, bila kekeruhan < 50 NTU, unit transmisi berfungsi sebagai
pengantar air yang diproduksi menuju ke beberapa tandon atau reservoir melalui jaringan pipa.

SIMPULAN
Masalah air bersih merupakan hal yang sangat penting bagi kehidupanmanusiaa.Dimana setiap hari kita membutuhkan air bersih untuk minum,memasak, mandi, mencuci dan sebagainya.Penggunaan air yang bersih untuk kegiatan sehari-hari tentunya membuat manusia terhindar dari penyakit. Sebagiabesar tubuh manusia terdiri atas air, yang berfungsi sebagai pelarut dan peyusunsegala system tubuh manusia. Agar air yang digunakan untuk kegiatan manusia
tidak berdampak negative bagi manusia, maka perlu diketahui persyaratan airbersih. Kualitas air bersih dapat ditinjau dari segi fisik, kimia dan biologis. Kualitasfisik ditinjau bau, rasa, dan warna.Kualitas kimia dapat diteliti melalui pengamatantentang kesadahan, pH, kandungan ion dan sebagainya.Sedangkan ada aatutidaknya mikroorganisme penyebab penyakit pada air merupakan syarat biologi airbersih. Selain dari segi kualitas, jumlah air juga harus memadai dalam rangkapemenuhan kebutuhan manusia. Air digunakan manusia untuk mandi, minum,mencuci, pertanan, perikanan dan lain sebagainya.Masing-masing kegiatan tersebutmemerlukan jumlah air yang beragam.Sumber air yang ada di permukaan bumidapat diolah menjadi air minum dengan berbagai teknik yang telah berkembang,
sehingga kebutukhan air minum yang memenuhi persyaratan Menteri KesehatanRepublik Indonesia dapat terpenuhi bagiu seluruh lapisan masyarakat.

Statistika banyak diterapkan dalam berbagai disiplin ilmu, baik ilmu-ilmu alam (misalnya astronomi dan biologi maupun ilmu-ilmu sosial (termasuk sosiologi dan psikologi), maupun di bidang bisnis,ekonomi, dan industri. Statistika juga digunakan dalam pemerintahan untuk berbagai macam tujuan;
sensus penduduk merupakan salah satu prosedur yang paling dikenal. Aplikasi statistika lainnya yangsekarang popular adalah prosedur jajak pendapat atau polling (misalnya dilakukan sebelum pemilihanumum), serta jajak cepat (perhitungan cepat hasil pemilu) atau quick count . Di bidang komputasi,statistika dapat pula diterapkan dalam pengenalan pola maupun kecerdasan buatan.

Penggunaan istilah statistika berakar dari istilah istilah dalam bahasa latin modern statisticumcollegium ("dewan negara") dan bahasa Italia statista ("negarawan" atau "politikus").
Gottfried Achenwall (1749) menggunakan Statistik dalam bahasa Jerman untuk pertama kalinyasebagai nama bagi kegiatan analisis data kenegaraan, dengan mengartikannya sebagai "ilmu tentang
negara ( state)". Pada awal abad ke-19 telah terjadi pergeseran arti menjadi "ilmu mengenai pengumpulan dan klasifikasi data". Sir John Sinclair memperkenalkan nama (Statistics) dan pengertian ini ke dalam bahasa Inggris. Jadi, statistika secara prinsip mula-mula hanya mengurus datayang dipakai lembaga-lembaga administratif dan pemerintahan. Pengumpulan data terus berlanjut,khususnya melalui sensus yang dilakukan secara teratur untuk memberi informasi kependudukanyang berubah setiap saat.
Pada abad ke-19 dan awal abad ke-20 statistika mulai banyak menggunakan bidang-bidang dalammatematika, terutama peluang. Cabang statistika yang pada saat ini sangat luas digunakan untuk mendukung metode ilmiah, statistika inferensi, dikembangkan pada paruh kedua abad ke-19 dan awalabad ke-20 oleh Ronald Fisher (peletak dasar statistika inferensi), Karl Pearson (metode regresilinear ), dan William Sealey Gosset (meneliti problem sampel berukuran kecil). Penggunaan statistika
pada masa sekarang dapat dikatakan telah menyentuh semua bidang ilmu pengetahuan, mulai dariastronomi hingga linguistika. Bidang-bidang ekonomi, biologi dan cabang-cabang terapannya, serta
psikologi banyak dipengaruhi oleh statistika dalam metodologinya. Akibatnya lahirlah ilmu-ilmugabungan seperti ekonometrika, biometrika (atau biostatistika), dan psikometrika.
Meskipun ada pihak yang menganggap statistika sebagai cabang dari matematika, tetapi sebagian pihak lainnya menganggap statistika sebagai bidang yang banyak terkait dengan matematika melihatdari sejarah dan aplikasinya. Di Indonesia, kajian statistika sebagian besar masuk dalam fakultasmatematika dan ilmu pengetahuan alam, baik di dalam departemen tersendiri maupun tergabungdengan matematika.

Konsep dasar
Dalam mengaplikasikan statistika terhadap permasalahan sains, industri, atau sosial, pertama-tamadimulai dari mempelajari populasi. Makna populasi dalam statistika dapat berarti populasi bendahidup, benda mati, ataupun benda abstrak. Populasi juga dapat berupa pengukuran sebuah prosesdalam waktu yang berbeda-beda, yakni dikenal dengan istilah deret waktu.
Melakukan pendataan (pengumpulan data) seluruh populasi dinamakan sensus. Sebuah sensus tentumemerlukan waktu dan biaya yang tinggi. Untuk itu, dalam statistika seringkali dilakukan
pengambilan sampel (sampling), yakni sebagian kecil dari populasi, yang dapat mewakili seluruh populasi. Analisis data dari sampel nantinya digunakan untuk menggeneralisasi seluruh populasi.
Jika sampel yang diambil cukup representatif, inferensial (pengambilan keputusan) dan simpulanyang dibuat dari sampel dapat digunakan untuk menggambarkan populasi secara keseluruhan.Metode statistika tentang bagaimana cara mengambil sampel yang tepat dinamakan teknik sampling.
Analisis statistik banyak menggunakan probabilitas sebagai konsep dasarnya hal terlihat banyak digunakannya uji statistika yang mengambil dasar pada sebaran peluang. Sedangkan matematikastatistika merupakan cabang dari matematika terapan yang menggunakan teori probabilitas dananalisis matematika untuk mendapatkan dasar-dasar teori statistika.
Ada dua macam statistika, yaitu statistika deskriptif dan statistika inferensial. Statistika deskriptif berkenaan dengan deskripsi data, misalnya dari menghitung rata-rata dan varians dari data mentah;mendeksripsikan menggunakan tabel-tabel atau grafik sehingga data mentah lebih mudah “dibaca”dan lebih bermakna. Sedangkan statistika inferensial lebih dari itu, misalnya melakukan pengujianhipotesis, melakukan prediksi observasi masa depan, atau membuat model regresi.

Statistika deskriptif berkenaan dengan bagaimana data dapat digambarkandideskripsikan) atau disimpulkan, baik secara numerik (misalnya menghitung rata-ratadan deviasi standar) atau secara grafis (dalam bentuk tabel atau grafik), untukmendapatkan gambaran sekilas mengenai data tersebut, sehingga lebih mudah dibaca
dan bermakna.2. Statistika inferensial berkenaan dengan permodelan data dan melakukanpengambilan keputusan berdasarkan analisis data, misalnya melakukan pengujianhipotesis, melakukan estimasi pengamatan masa mendatang (estimasi atau prediksi),membuat permodelan hubungan (korelasi, regresi, ANOVA, deret waktu), dansebagainya.
Metode Statistika

Tujuan umum bagi suatu penelitian berbasis statistika adalah menyelidiki hubungan sebab-akibat,
dan lebih khusus menarik suatu simpulan akan perubahan yang timbul pada peubah (atau variabel )

respon ( peubah dependen) akibat berubahnya peubah penjelas (explanatory variables) ( peubahindependen).
Terdapat dua jenis utama penelitian: eksperimen dan survei. Keduanya sama-sama mendalami pengaruh perubahan pada peubah penjelas dan perilaku peubah respon akibat perubahan itu. Bedakeduanya terletak pada bagaimana kajiannya dilakukan.
Suatu eksperimen melibatkan pengukuran terhadap sistem yang dikaji, memberi perlakuan terhadapsistem, dan kemudian melakukan pengukuran (lagi) dengan cara yang sama terhadap sistem yangtelah diperlakukan untuk mengetahui apakah perlakuan mengubah nilai pengukuran. Bisa juga
perlakuan diberikan secara simultan dan pengaruhnya diukur dalam waktu yang bersamaan pula.Metode statistika yang berkaitan dengan pelaksanaan suatu eksperimen dipelajari dalam rancangan
percobaan (desain eksperimen).
Dalam survey, di sisi lain, tidak dilakukan manipulasi terhadap sistem yang dikaji. Data dikumpulkandan hubungan (korelasi) antara berbagai peubah diselidiki untuk memberi gambaran terhadap objek
penelitian. Teknik-teknik survai dipelajari dalam metode survei.
Penelitian tipe eksperimen banyak dilakukan pada ilmu-ilmu rekayasa, misalnya teknik, ilmu pangan,
agronomi, farmasi, pemasaran (marketing), dan psikologi eksperimen.
Penelitian tipe observasi paling sering dilakukan di bidang ilmu-ilmu sosial atau berkaitan dengan perilaku sehari-hari, misalnya ekonomi, psikologi dan pedagogi, kedokteran masyarakat, dan industri.
Tipe pengukuran
Ada empat tipe pengukuran atau skala pengukuran yang digunakan di dalam statistika, yakni:nominal, ordinal, interval, dan rasio. Keempat skala pengukuran tersebut memiliki tingkat
penggunaan yang berbeda dalam riset statistik.
1. Skala nominal hanya bisa membedakan sesuatu yang bersifat kualitatif
(misalnya: jenis kelamin, agama, warna kulit).2. Skala ordinal selain membedakan juga menunjukkan tingkatan (misalnya:pendidikan, tingkat kepuasan).
3. Skala interval berupa angka kuantitatif namun tidak memiliki nilai nol mutlak(misalnya: tahun, suhu dalam Celcius).
4. Skala rasio berupa angka kuantitatif yang memiliki nilai nol mutlak.

Siapakah Pythagoras itu? Pythagoras adalah seorang ahli matematika dan filsafatberkebangsaan Yunani yang hidup pada tahun 569–475 sebelum Masehi. Sebagai ahlimetematika, ia mengungkapkan bahwa kuadrat panjang sisi miring suatu segitiga siku-siku adalah sama dengan jumlah kuadrat panjang sisi-sisi yang lain. Untukmembuktikan hal ini, coba kamulakukan Kegiatan 5.1.
Kegiatan 5.1
1. Sediakan kertas karton, pensil, penggaris, lem, dan gunting.
2. Buatlah empat buah segitiga yang sama dengan panjang sisi alas a =
3 cm, sisi tegak b = 4 cm, dan sisi miring c = 5 cm. Lalu guntinglah segitiga-segitiga itu.
3. Buatlah sebuah persegi dengan panjang sisi yang sama dengan sisi miring segitiga,
yaitu c = 5 cm. Warnailah daerah persegi tersebut, lalu guntinglah.
4. Tempelkan persegi di karton dan atur posisi keempat segitiga sehingga sisi c segitiga
berimpit dengan setiap sisi persegi dan terbentuk sebuah persegi besar dengan sisi (a +
b). Lihat gambar berikut.

Jika kamu perhatikan dengan cermat akan diperoleh hubungan c2 = a2 + b2, dimana cadalah panjang sisi miring, a adalah panjang alas, dan b adalah tinggi. Dari hubungantersebut dapat dikatakan bahwa kuadrat panjang sisi miring segitiga siku-siku sama
dengan jumlah kuadrat sisi-sisi lainya. Inilah yang disebut teorema Pythagoras.Cara lain untuk membuktikan teorema Pythagoras adalah dengan menempatkanpersegi di setiap sisi segitiga siku-siku. Coba kamu perhatikan Gambar 5.2 secarasaksama.Gambar tersebut menunjukkan sebuah segitiga yang memiliki persegi pada setiapsisinya. Ukuran segitiga tersebut adalah• Panjang sisi miring = AC = 5 satuan.• Tinggi = BC = 3 satuan.• Panjang sisi alas = AB = 4 satuan.Perhatikan bahwa luas persegi pada sisi miring sama dengan luas persegi pada sisialas ditambah luas persegi pada tinggi segitiga. Pernyataan tersebut dapat dituliskan
sebagai berikut.Luas persegi pada sisi miring = luas persegi pada sisi alas + luas persegi pada tinggi.25 = 16 + 9(5)2 = (4)2 + (3)2

Gambar tersebut menunjukkan sebuah segitigasiku-siku ABC dengan panjang sisi miring b, panjang sisi alas c, dan tinggi a.Berdasarkan, teorema Pythagoras, dalam segitiga siku-siku tersebut berlaku:

Seperti yang telah disebutkan sebelumnya, teorema Pythagoras banyak sekalidigunakan dalam perhitungan bidang matematika yang lain. Misalnya, menghitungpanjang sisi-sisi segitiga, menentukan diagonal pada bangundatar, sampai perhitungan diagonal ruang pada suatu bangun ruang. "Teorema Pythagoras" dinamakan oleh ahli matematika Yunani kuno yaitu Pythagoras, yang
dianggap sebagai orang yang pertama kali memberikan bukti teorema ini. Akan tetapi, banyak
orang yang percaya bahwa terdapat hubungan khusus antara sisi dari sebuah segi tiga siku-siku
jauh sebelum Pythagoras menemukannya.
Teorema Pythagoras memainkan peran yang sangat signifikan dalam berbagai bidang yangberkaitan dengan matematika. Misalnya, untuk membentuk dasar trigonometri dan bentuk

aritmatika, di mana bentuk ini menggabungkan geometri dan aljabar. Teorema ini adalah
sebuah hubungan dalam Geometri Euclides di antara tiga sisi dari segi tiga siku-siku. Hal ini
menyatakan bahwa 'Jumlah dari persegi yang dibentuk dari panjang dua sisi siku-sikunya akan
sama dengan jumlah persegi yang dibentuk dari panjang hipotenusa-nya'.
Secara matematis, teorema ini biasanya biasanya ditulis sebagai : a2 + b2 = c2 , di mana a dan
b mewakili panjang dari dua sisi lain dari segitiga siku-siku dan c mewakili panjang dari
hipotenusanya (sisi miring).
Sejarah
Sejarah dari Teorema Pythagoras dapat dibagi sebagai berikut:
1. pengetahuan dari Triple Pythagoras,
2. hubungan antara sisi-sisi dari segitiga siku-siku dan sudut-sudut yang berdekatan, 3. bukti
dari teorema.
Sekitar 4000 tahun yang lalu, orang Babilonia dan orang Cina telah menyadari fakta bahwa
sebuah segitiga dengan panjang sisi 3, 4, dan 5 harus merupakan segitiga siku-siku. Mereka
menggunakan konsep ini untuk membangun sudut siku-siku dan merancang segitiga siku-siku
dengan membagi panjang tali ke dalam 12 bagian yang sama, seperti sisi pertama pada segitiga
adalah 3, sisi kedua adalah 4, dan sisi ketiga adalah 5 satuan panjang.
Sekitar 2500 tahun SM, Monumen Megalithic di Mesir dan Eropa Utara terdapat susunan segitiga
siku-siku dengan panjang sisi yang bulat. Bartel Leendert van der Waerden meng-hipotesis-
kan bahwa Tripel Pythagoras diidentifikasi secara aljabar. Selama pemerintahan Hammurabi the
Great (1790 - 1750 SM), tablet Plimpton Mesopotamian 32 terdiri dari banyak tulisan yang
terkait dengan Tripel Pythagoras. Di India (Abad ke-8 sampai ke-2 sebelum masehi), terdapat
Baudhayana Sulba Sutra yang terdiri dari daftar Tripel Pythagoras yaitu pernyataan dari dalil
dan bukti geometris dari teorema untuk segitiga siku-siku sama kaki.
Pythagoras (569-475 SM) menggunakan metode aljabar untuk membangun Tripel Pythagoras.Menurut Sir Thomas L. Heath, tidak ada penentuan sebab dari teorema ini selama hampir lima
abad setelah Pythagoras menuliskan teorema ini. Namun, penulis seperti Plutarch dan Cicero
mengatributkan teorema ke Pythagoras sampai atribusi tersebut diterima dan dikenal secara
luas. Pada 400 SM, Plato mendirikan sebuah metode untuk mencari Tripel Pythagoras yang baik
dipadukan dengan aljabar and geometri. Sekitar 300 SM, elemen Euclid (bukti aksiomatis yang
tertua) menyajikan teorema tersebut. Teks Cina Chou Pei Suan Ching yang ditulis antara 500
SM sampai 200 sesudah masehi memiliki bukti visual dari Teorema Pythagoras atau disebut
dengan "Gougu Theorem" (sebagaimana diketahui di Cina) untuk segitiga berukuran 3, 4, dan
5. Selama Dinasti Han (202 SM - 220 M), Tripel Pythagoras muncul di Sembilan Bab pada SeniMathematika seiring dengan sebutan segitiga siku-siku. Rekaman pertama menggunakan

teorema berada di Cina sebagai 'theorem Gougu', dan di India dinamakan "Bhaskara
theorem".
Namun, hal ini belum dikonfirmasi apakah Pythagoras adalah orang pertama yang menemukan
hubungan antara sisi dari segitiga siku-siku, karena tidak ada teks yang ditulis olehnya yang
ditemukan. Walaupun demikian, nama Pythagoras telah dipercaya untuk menjadi nama yang
sesuai untuk teorema ini.

menegangkan atau mengasyikkan rekaan seorang pengarang, atau gagasan mengenai
penyelenggaraan masyarakat dan negara, politik, kisah perjalanan, cerita keberhasilan, petunjuk cara
melakukan sesuatu, ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi, kisah kehidupan seseorang, dapat dijadikan bahan
tulisan dalam buku.
Buku dapat menghibur. Buku-buku humor, komik, novel, cerita detektif, rekaan ilmiah, roman, dongeng
dan cerita anak-anak -- yang tidak menggurui -- baik rekaan maupun yang sungguh-sungguh terjadi,
dapat mendatangkan kesenangan atau kegembiraan kepada pembacanya. Cerita detektif yang
menegangkan atau kisah percintaan yang menyedihkan pun, memberikan hiburan kepada pembacanya;
merupakan selingan bagi kehidupan dan kegiatan pekerjaan sesungguhnya sehari-hari.

Buku dapat memberi informasi. Buku-buku petunjuk kesehatan populer, buku mengenai pendidikan
keluarga, ensiklopedia, kamus, buku ajar, buku-buku ilmiah akademik ataupun populer, dapat dijadikan
rujukan bagi siapa pun yang memerlukannya. Buku-buku semacam ini dapat membantu seseorangmeningkatkan pengetahuan maupun keterampilannya, baik di bidang profesi atau pekerjaannya, maupun
sebagai tambahan pengetahuan untuk meningkatkan wawasan dan kualitas dirinya.
Buku pun dapat meningkatkan keterampilan, mendorong kemajuan seseorang; baik keterampilan

kejuruan atau keahlian, maupun sekadar petunjuk untuk hobi atau pengisi waktu senggang, dapat

suatu bidang. "Buku-buku sukses" yang menceriterakan keberhasilan seseorang, atau buku petunjuk
untuk mengembangkan, baik dalam berwiraswasta atau kemampuan berperilaku dan bertindak untuk
mencapai prestasi, merupakan suatu kelompok atau jenis buku yang banyak diterbitkan.
Memang benar, bila dikatakan bahwa buku adalah sumber ilmu, buku adalah sahabat yang setia dan
teman akrab yang penuh tahu, buku adalah jembatan menuju kemajuan dan jalan menuju sukses, buku
dapat mencerdas- kan bangsa, buku adalah sumber kearifan, buku adalah guru segala ilmu, dan sederet
panjang lagi "buku adalah . . . . . . ". Namun benar juga "Buku sebagai pajangan adalah pemborosan",
sebagai ucapan Bapak G.H. Mantik dalam "Bicara 235 Tokoh Tentang Buku".
Nah, bila Anda mempunyai pemikiran atau gagasan, ilmu, keterampilan, petunjuk, pengalaman, ataupun
khayalan yang ingin disampaikan kepada orang lain, apa lagi bila semuanya itu bermanfaat, Anda sudah
mulai mengarah kepada terciptanya sebuah buku. Langkah selanjutnya adalah menyusun bahan-bahan
tersebut dalam sistematika yang baik, dalam bahasa dan sajian yang mudah dan enak dibaca dan
difahami, sesuai dengan pembaca sasarannya.
Tahap Produksi
Bila naskah telah tersusun lengkap, Anda sudah dapat mulai "memproduksi" buku. Anda mulai dengan
merancang bentuk dan ukuran buku, kemudian menyediakan ilustrasi atau gambar untuk membuat buku
lebih menarik, di samping menambah pemahaman oleh pembaca. Setelah ada naskah, tersedia bahan
ilustrasi, ada gambaran mengenai bentuk dan penampilan buku, Anda lebih siap lagi untuk melanjutkan
proses produksi melahirkan buku.
Bila dianggap naskah sudah "siap cetak", langkah pertama produksi buku adalah menyalin naskah -

yang mungkin berupa tulisan tangan atau ketikan mesin tik - menjadi halaman-halaman buku dengan
huruf cetakan. Hal ini bisa dilakukan dengan mesin tik biasa, atau mesin tik listrik, atau sekarang dengan
komputer, baik dengan pengolah kata biasa, atau lebih baik lagi dengan program desk top publishing
yang menyediakan jenis, bentuk, dan ukuran huruf beragam dan indah. Pengetikan atau penyusunanhuruf dilakukan sekaligus dengan mengatur penempatan gambar atau ilustrasi di tempat-tempat yang
tepat. Ditentukan juga huruf untuk judul-judul bab, keterangan gambar, tabel-tabel, grafik, bila perlu.
Semuanya disusun dalam halaman-halaman, sesuai dengan ukuran buku yang Anda rencanakan. Untuk
lebih "profesional", dirancang sampul buku, halaman judul buku, daftar isi, indeks,daftar pustaka, serta
bagian-bagian buku lain, yang dapat Anda tiru dari buku penerbit profesional.
Kemudian hasil penyusunan huruf, yang sudah lengkap dengan ilustrasi di tempat yang tepat, Anda
susun menurut urutan halaman buku. Sampul, yang biasanya dari kertas lebih tebal dari isi buku, dapat
diberi judul dan nama pengarang menggunakan huruf yang lebih besar, dapat juga diberi ilustrasi; satu
warna atau warna lengkap, tergantung pada kemampuan Anda sebagai "desainer". Tumpukan kertas
halaman buku kemudian dijilid. Bila bukunya tipis, penjilidan dapat dengan stapler atau dijahit benang.
Bila bukunya tebal, punggungnya dilem, kemudian dipasangi sampul. Jadilah buku Anda; hasil karya
Anda sendiri. Mulai dari mengarangnya, sampai memproduksinya. Akan tetapi, buku yang jadi hanya
satu.
Jika Anda menginginkan beberapa buah, untuk dibagikan kepada teman-teman, sebelum dijilid, hasil
penyusunan huruf dapat diperbanyak dengan fotokopi. Jilidnya juga dibuat beberapa buah, apakah
dengan tangan atau difotokopi bila tidak berwarna. Selesai difotokopi, tiap buku dijilid; jadilah beberapa
buku Anda. Anda dapat membagikannya -- atau menjualnya -- kepada orang lain. Bila Anda kemudian
menjual buku-buku tersebut, apakah secara langsung kepada pembaca, atau melalui toko buku atau
penjual buku lain, lengkaplah kegiatan Anda sebagai penerbit buku. Anda telah menjadi penerbit yang
melakukan segala prosesnya sendiri; dari mengarang, memproduksi, kemudian menjualnya. Selamat!
Bila tidak mau terlalu repot mengurus produksi buku, dan Anda ingin jumlah buku lebih banyak, sampai
ribuan, setelah naskah tersusun dan bahan ilustrasi tersedia, Anda dapat pergi ke sebuah percetakan.
Anda dapat meminta mereka untuk memperbanyak buku dengan mesin-mesin lebih canggih yang
mereka punyai. Setelah percetakan mencetak buku menurut jumlah pesanan Anda, Anda membayar

Akan tetapi, bila Anda mau lebih "enak" dan tidak repot lagi memproduksi dan menjual buku yang sudah
jadi, atau Anda tidak punya biaya untuk membayar ongkos cetak, setelah Anda menulis naskah ditik
rapih, diberi sembir kiri dan kanan, spasi jarang, pada kertas tidak timbal balik, lalu menyediakan
ilustrasi, Anda dapat menghubungi penerbit buku. Pilihlah penerbit yang biasa menerbitkan jenis bukuyang sesuai dengan naskah yang Anda susun. Tawarkanlah naskah tersebut kepada penerbit.
Bila dengan berbagai pertimbangannya, penerbit bersedia menerbitkan naskah Anda menjadi buku,
biasanya akan dibuat perjanjian penerbitan; Anda menyerahkan naskah tersebut kepada penerbit, yang
akan memperbanyak/ memproduksi buku serta menjualkannya untuk Anda. Pada saat penyerahan
naskah tersebut, Anda tidak usah mengeluarkan biaya apa-apa. Bahkan mungkin, Anda mendapat uang.
Penerbit akan menanggung segala biaya produksi dan pemasaran buku tersebut, sedang Anda akan
memperoleh bagian dari hasil penjualan buku , bila nanti sudah terbit dan terjual. Bagian tersebut,
persentase dari harga buku yang terjual, biasa disebut royalti.
Penerbit akan melakukan kegiatan seperti yang Anda lakukan ketika menerbitkan sendiri. Namun akan
lebih profesional, karena mereka mempunyai bagian dan petugas-petugas khusus untuk menangani
setiap tahap dari penerbitan buku. Mereka pun akan lebih memperhatikan segi bisnisnya, dibandingkan
Anda yang lebih didorong oleh idealisme.
Pada umumnya, di penerbit ada beberapa bagian yang mempunyai tugas tertentu dalam proses
penerbitan. Seperti pada perusahaan-perusahaan lain, tentu saja ada direktur dan manajemen, yang
mengatur agar perusahaan berjalan sehat dan mendapat keuntungan dari hasil usahanya. Dengan
keuntungan dari satu buku, dapat diterbitkan buku-buku lain.
Isi Perut Penerbit
Siapakah penerbit? Seperti telah diuraikan di atas, secara sederhana dapat dikatakan bahwa penerbit
adalah badan yang memperbanyak naskah seorang pengarang atau penulis, dalam bentuk buku,
kemudian menyebar- kannya kepada masyarakat pembaca yang memerlukannya. Ditinjau dari sudut
komunikasi, penerbit menjadi perantara, antara sumber informasi (pengarang) dan penerima informasi
(pembaca). Dalam peran dan kegiatannya, penerbit mempunyai banyak mitra selain penulis, misalnya
penerjemah, perancang buku, ilustrator, percetakan, penyalur/distributor buku, toko buku, perpustakaan
dan pustakawan, media massa, kalangan pendidikan, bank, penanam modal, pemerintah, penerbit-
penerbit lain, dan terutama masyarakat pembaca serta pengguna buku. Dalam mengatur kegiatan
pengalihan naskah menjadi buku, penerbit menyediakan modalnya sendiri atau modal dari sumber lain.

Pada awal kegiatannya, penerbit menerima, mencari, atau mengusahakan naskah yang sudah jadi dari
penulis atau pengarang, penerjemah, atau meminta seseorang untuk menyusunnya. Penerbit kemudian
mempertimbangkan, apakah naskah yang diperolehnya patut diterbitkan; artinya, apakah banyak orang
lain yang memerlukannya, akan membeli dan membacanya bila sudah jadi buku.
Untuk melaksanakan pengadaan, pertimbangan, dan pengolahan naskah, biasanya di penerbit ada
bagian khusus; ada yang menamakannya Bagian Editorial, Dewan Penyunting, Bagian Pernaskahan,
atau nama lain. Bila setelah dipertimbangkan, naskah diterima untuk diterbitkan, ada petugas dari
Bagian Editorial ini yang bertugas menyunting naskah, yaitu mempersiapkan naskah, baik dari segi isi,
bahasa, sistematika, dan cara penyajiannya, yang biasa disebut Penyunting Naskah.
Selain Bagian Editorial, bagian penting lain dalam penerbit adalah Bagian Produksi, yang merancang
dan memproduksi buku bekerja sama dengan percetakan. Bagian Produksi, bersama Penyunting
Naskah dan perancang buku, memberi petunjuk bentuk, ukuran, tata rupa, yang meliputi pemilihan jenis
dan ukuran huruf, penyediaan ilustrasi, penentuan tata letak, pemilihan bahan kertas, cara penjilidan,
serta masalah produksi yang lain. Bagian Produksi juga mengatur, mengikuti, dan bekerja sama dengan
percetakan dalam proses produksi buku. Ada penerbit yang mempunyai percetakan sendiri, ada juga
yang mencetak pada perusahaan percetakan di luar.
Bagian penting ketiga dalam penerbit yaitu Bagian Pemasaran, yang dapat mencakup promosi dan
penjualan. Ada juga penerbit yang memisahkan Bagian Penjualan dari Bagian Pemasaran, dan
mempunyai Bagian Promosi tersendiri. Bagian ini menangani usaha memperkenalkan buku kepada
masyarakat, menyebarkan buku melalui penyalur/distributor/grosir atau toko-toko buku, dan menangani
penjualannya. Sebelum atau menjelang terbitnya suatu buku, bagian promosi sudah mempersiapkan
cara untuk mengumumkan terbitnya buku, memperkenalkannya kepada masyarakat, baik secara
meluas, maupun secara terarah. Berbagai usaha dilakukan, misalnya mengirimkan sampul dan
ringkasan isi buku, sebelum buku terbit. Atau, bila buku sudah terbit, membuat selebaran khusus
mengenai buku tersebut, mengirimkan contoh buku kepada orang atau lembaga yang ada kaitannya,
memasang iklan dan memuat tinjauan buku di media massa, mengirimkan surat penawaran khusus,
mengirimkan contoh buku ke perpustakaan-perpustakaan, dan sebagainya.
Sejalan dengan usaha promosi, buku pun disebar ke pasar, ke toko-toko buku, penyalur buku. Mungkin
juga buku dijual bukan di toko buku; buku-buku khusus dijual di tempat khusus pula, yang sesuai. Buku-
buku berseri yang mahal, sering ditawarkan langsung dari pintu ke pintu rumah atau kantor oleh
salesman.

Organisasi penerbit dapat berlainan dari satu penerbit ke penerbit lain, namun fungsi-fungsi pokoknya
adalah pengadaan, pertimbangan, dan pengolahan naskah hingga siap cetak, lalu produksi atau
penggandaan buku, dan akhirnya pemasaran dan penjualan buku yang telah jadi. Ketiga bagian utama
penerbit, dapat dipimpin oleh seorang manajer; jadi ada Manajer Bagian Editorial, Manajer BagianProduksi, dan Manajer Bagian Pemasaran/Penjualan, di samping manajer-manajer lain yang menangani
urusan-urusan perusahaan sebagaimana pada perusahaan lain. Seperti juga pada jenis perusahaan
lain, kegiatan penerbit merupakan usaha terpadu; antara bagian-bagian harus ada kerja sama yang erat.
Bagian Editorial tidak seenaknya mencari dan menentukan naskah yang akan diterbitkan; Bagian
Produksi tidak seenaknya menentukan bentuk atau penampilan buku; Bagian Pemasaran tidak bisa
sendiri mempromosikan dan menjual buku tanpa bantuan bagian-bagian lain.
Bagian Editorial memerlukan informasi dari Bagian Pemasaran mengenai buku-buku yang diperlukan
oleh masyarakat, maupun tentang penjualan buku penerbit di pasar,dan buku-buku penerbit lain yang
sudah ada di pasar. Sebaliknya Bagian Pemasaran memerlukan petunjuk dan bantuan Bagian Editorial
mengenai isi buku yang akan atau baru terbit, pembaca sasaran maupun cara-cara promosi dan
penjualannya. Bagian Produksi perlu saran dan pendapat Bagian Editorial mengenai bentuk, tata rupa,
kualitas, harga buku, karena Bagian Editorial tahu suatu buku untuk siapa dan bagaimana buku akan
digunakan. Bagian Produksi pun perlu masukan dari Bagian Pemasaran mengenai kesukaan dan
kecenderungan pasar, baik dalam hal harga maupun dalam penampilan buku.
Sekarang, setelah mengetahui isi perut penerbit, lebih jelaslah judul karangan ini; setiap orang dapat
membuat buku. Akan tetapi, apakah Anda dapat menjadi penerbit, yang dapat menghasilkan buku yang
diinginkan, dibutuhkan, dan kemudian dibeli pembaca? Dan di samping mencapai idealismenya, juga
memperoleh keuntungan materi? Jawabannya tentu saja akan didapat setelah Anda mencoba
menjalankan profesi yang menantang, mengasyikkan dan memberi kepuasan ini dengan kebulatan
tekad. Siapa tahu Anda bisa!***

Publishing Development in Sumatra and West Kalimantan dan Publishing Development in Eastern Indonesia yang

Jika menelaah literatur psikologi, kita akan menemukan banyak teori belajar yang bersumber dari
aliran-aliran psikologi. Dalam tautan di bawah ini akan dikemukakan empat jenis teori belajar,
yaitu: (A) teori behaviorisme; (B) teori belajar kognitif menurut Piaget; (C) teori pemrosesan
informasi dari Gagne, dan (D) teori belajar gestalt.
A. Teori Behaviorisme
Behaviorisme merupakan salah aliran psikologi yang memandang individu hanya dari sisi fenomena
jasmaniah, dan mengabaikan aspek – aspek mental. Dengan kata lain, behaviorisme tidak mengakui
adanya kecerdasan, bakat, minat dan perasaan individu dalam suatu belajar. Peristiwa belajar
semata-mata melatih refleks-refleks sedemikian rupa sehingga menjadi kebiasaan yang dikuasai
individu.

B. Teori Belajar Kognitif menurut Piaget
Piaget merupakan salah seorang tokoh yang disebut-sebut sebagai pelopor aliran konstruktivisme.
Salah satu sumbangan pemikirannya yang banyak digunakan sebagai rujukan untuk memahami
perkembangan kognitif individu yaitu teori tentang tahapan perkembangan individu. Menurut
Piaget bahwa perkembangan kognitif individu meliputi empat tahap yaitu : (1) sensory motor ; (2)
pre operational ; (3) concrete operational dan (4) formal operational . Pemikiran lain dari Piaget
tentang proses rekonstruksi pengetahuan individu yaitu asimilasi dan akomodasi. James Atherton
(2005) menyebutkan bahwa asisimilasi adalah “the process by which a person takes material into
their mind from the environment, which may mean changing the evidence of their senses to make
it fit” dan akomodasi adalah “the difference made to one’s mind or concepts by the process of
assimilation”
D. Teori Belajar Gestalt
Gestalt berasal dari bahasa Jerman yang mempunyai padanan arti sebagai “bentuk atau
konfigurasi”. Pokok pandangan Gestalt adalah bahwa obyek atau peristiwa tertentu akan dipandang
sebagai sesuatu keseluruhan yang terorganisasikan.

Ada kecenderungan dewasa ini untuk kembali pada pemikiran bahwa anak akan belajar
lebih baik jika lingkungan diciptakan alamiah. Belajar akan lebih bermakna jika anak mengalami apayang dipelajarinya, bukan memgetahuinya. Pembelajaran yang berorientasi pada penguasaan materi
terbukti berhasil dalam kompetisi menggingat jangka pendek tetapi gagal dalam membekali anak
memecahkan persoalan dalam kehidupan jangka panjang
Pendekatan kontektual (Contextual Teaching and Learning /CTL) merupakan konsep belajar yang
membantu guru mengaitkan antara materi yang diajarkan dengan situasi dunia nyata siswa.

Pembelajaran tuntas (mastery learning) dalam proses pembelajaran berbasis kompetensi
dimaksudkan adalah pendekatan dalam pembelajaran yang mempersyaratkan peserta didik
menguasai secara tuntas seluruh standar kompetensi maupun kompetensi dasar mata
pelajaran tertentu. Dalam model yang paling sederhana, dikemukakan bahwa jika setiap
peserta didik diberikan waktu sesuai dengan yang diperlukan untuk mencapai suatu tingkatpenguasaan, dan jika dia menghabiskan waktu yang diperlukan, maka besar kemungkinan
peserta didik akan mencapai tingkat penguasaan kompetensi. Tetapi jika peserta didik tidak
diberi cukup waktu atau dia tidak dapat menggunakan waktu yang diperlukan secara penuh,
maka tingkat penguasaan kompetensi peserta didik tersebut belum optimal. Block (1971)
menyatakan tingkat penguasaan kompetensi peserta didik sebagai berikut :

Dalam proses pembelajaran dikenal beberapa istilah yang memiliki
kemiripan makna, sehingga seringkali orang merasa bingung untuk membedakannya.
Istilah-istilah tersebut adalah: (1) pendekatan pembelajaran, (2) strategi pembelajaran,
(3) metode pembelajaran; (4) teknik pembelajaran; (5) taktik pembelajaran; dan (6)
model pembelajaran. Berikut ini akan dipaparkan istilah-istilah tersebut, dengan
harapan dapat memberikan kejelasaan tentang penggunaan istilah tersebut.
Pendekatan pembelajarandapat diartikan sebagai titik tolak atau sudut pandang kita terhadap
proses pembelajaran, yang merujuk pada pandangan tentang terjadinya suatu proses yang sifatnyamasih sangat umum, di dalamnya mewadahi, menginsiprasi, menguatkan, dan melatari metode

pembelajaran dengan cakupan teoretis tertentu. Dilihat dari pendekatannya, pembelajaran terdapat
dua jenis pendekatan, yaitu: (1) pendekatan pembelajaran yang berorientasi atau berpusat pada
siswa (student centered approach) dan (2) pendekatan pembelajaran yang berorientasi atau
berpusat pada guru (teacher centered approach).
Dari pendekatan pembelajaran yang telah ditetapkan selanjutnya diturunkan ke dalam strategi
pembelajaran. Newman dan Logan (Abin Syamsuddin Makmun, 2003) mengemukakan empat
unsur strategi dari setiap usaha, yaitu:
1. Mengidentifikasi dan menetapkan spesifikasi dan kualifikasi hasil (out put) dan sasaran (target)
yang harus dicapai, dengan mempertimbangkan aspirasi dan selera masyarakat yang
memerlukannya.
2. Mempertimbangkan dan memilih jalan pendekatan utama (basic way) yang paling efektif untuk
mencapai sasaran.
3. Mempertimbangkan dan menetapkan langkah-langkah (steps) yang akan dtempuh sejak titik
awal sampai dengan sasaran.
4. Mempertimbangkan dan menetapkan tolok ukur (criteria) dan patokan ukuran (standard) untuk
mengukur dan menilai taraf keberhasilan (achievement) usaha.
Jika kita terapkan dalam konteks pembelajaran, keempat unsur tersebut adalah:
1. Menetapkan spesifikasi dan kualifikasi tujuan pembelajaran yakni perubahan profil perilaku dan
pribadi peserta didik.
2. Mempertimbangkan dan memilih sistem pendekatan pembelajaran yang dipandang paling
efektif.
3. Mempertimbangkan dan menetapkan langkah-langkah atau prosedur, metode dan teknik
pembelajaran.
4. Menetapkan norma-norma dan batas minimum ukuran keberhasilan atau kriteria dan ukuran baku keberhasilan.
Sementara itu, Kemp (Wina Senjaya, 2008) mengemukakan bahwa strategi pembelajaran
adalah suatu kegiatan pembelajaran yang harus dikerjakan guru dan siswa agar tujuan pembelajaran
dapat dicapai secara efektif dan efisien. Selanjutnya, dengan mengutip pemikiran J. R David, Wina
Senjaya (2008) menyebutkan bahwa dalam strategi pembelajaran terkandung makna perencanaan.
Artinya, bahwa strategi pada dasarnya masih bersifat konseptual tentang keputusan-keputusan yang
akan diambil dalam suatu pelaksanaan pembelajaran. Dilihat dari strateginya, pembelajaran dapat
dikelompokkan ke dalam dua bagian pula, yaitu: (1) exposition-discovery learning dan (2)group-individual learning (Rowntree dalam Wina Senjaya, 2008). Ditinjau dari cara penyajian

dan cara pengolahannya, strategi pembelajaran dapat dibedakan antara strategi pembelajaran
induktif dan strategi pembelajaran deduktif.
Strategi pembelajaran sifatnya masih konseptual dan untuk mengimplementasikannya digunakan
berbagai metode pembelajaran tertentu. Dengan kata lain, strategi merupakan “a plan of operation
achieving something” sedangkan metode adalah “a way in achieving something” (Wina Senjaya
(2008). Jadi, metode pembelajaran dapat diartikan sebagai cara yang digunakan untuk
mengimplementasikan rencana yang sudah disusun dalam bentuk kegiatan nyata dan praktis untuk
mencapai tujuan pembelajaran. Terdapat beberapa metode pembelajaran yang dapat digunakan
untuk mengimplementasikan strategi pembelajaran, diantaranya: (1) ceramah; (2) demonstrasi; (3)
diskusi; (4) simulasi; (5) laboratorium; (6) pengalaman lapangan; (7) brainstorming; (8) debat, (9)
simposium, dan sebagainya.
Selanjutnya metode pembelajaran dijabarkan ke dalam teknik dan gaya pembelajaran. Dengan
demikian, teknik pembelajaran dapat diatikan sebagai cara yang dilakukan seseorang dalam
mengimplementasikan suatu metode secara spesifik. Misalkan, penggunaan metode ceramah pada
kelas dengan jumlah siswa yang relatif banyak membutuhkan teknik tersendiri, yang tentunya
secara teknis akan berbeda dengan penggunaan metode ceramah pada kelas yang jumlah siswanya
terbatas. Demikian pula, dengan penggunaan metode diskusi, perlu digunakan teknik yang berbeda
pada kelas yang siswanya tergolong aktif dengan kelas yang siswanya tergolong pasif. Dalam hal ini,
guru pun dapat berganti-ganti teknik meskipun dalam koridor metode yang sama.
Sementara taktik pembelajaranmerupakan gaya seseorang dalam melaksanakan metode atau
teknik pembelajaran tertentu yang sifatnya individual. Misalkan, terdapat dua orang sama-sama
menggunakan metode ceramah, tetapi mungkin akan sangat berbeda dalam taktik yang
digunakannya. Dalam penyajiannya, yang satu cenderung banyak diselingi dengan humor karena
memang dia memiliki sense of humor yang tinggi, sementara yang satunya lagi kurang memiliki
sense of humor, tetapi lebih banyak menggunakan alat bantu elektronik karena dia memang sangat
menguasai bidang itu. Dalam gaya pembelajaran akan tampak keunikan atau kekhasan dari masing-masing guru, sesuai dengan kemampuan, pengalaman dan tipe kepribadian dari guru yang
bersangkutan. Dalam taktik ini, pembelajaran akan menjadi sebuah ilmu sekalkigus juga seni (kiat)
Apabila antara pendekatan, strategi, metode, teknik dan bahkan taktik pembelajaran sudah
terangkai menjadi satu kesatuan yang utuh maka terbentuklah apa yang disebut dengan model
pembelajaran. Jadi, model pembelajaran pada dasarnya merupakan bentuk pembelajaran yang
tergambar dari awal sampai akhir yang disajikan secara khas oleh guru. Dengan kata lain, model
pembelajaran merupakan bungkus atau bingkai dari penerapan suatu pendekatan, metode, dan
teknik pembelajaran.

Berkenaan dengan model pembelajaran, Bruce Joyce dan Marsha Weil (Dedi Supriawan dan A.
Benyamin Surasega, 1990) mengetengahkan 4 (empat) kelompok model pembelajaran, yaitu: (1)
model interaksi sosial; (2) model pengolahan informasi; (3) model personal-humanistik; dan (4)
model modifikasi tingkah laku. Kendati demikian, seringkali penggunaan istilah model
pembelajaran tersebut diidentikkan dengan strategi pembelajaran.
Untuk lebih jelasnya, posisi hierarkis dari masing-masing istilah tersebut, kiranya dapat
divisualisasikan sebagai berikut:
Di luar istilah-istilah tersebut, dalam proses pembelajaran dikenal juga istilah desain
pembelajaran. Jika strategi pembelajaran lebih berkenaan dengan pola umum dan prosedur
umum aktivitas pembelajaran, sedangkan desain pembelajaran lebih menunjuk kepada cara-cara
merencanakan suatu sistem lingkungan belajar tertentu setelah ditetapkan strategi pembelajarantertentu. Jika dianalogikan dengan pembuatan rumah, strategi membicarakan tentang berbagai
kemungkinan tipe atau jenis rumah yang hendak dibangun (rumah joglo, rumah gadang, rumah
modern, dan sebagainya), masing-masing akan menampilkan kesan dan pesan yang berbeda dan
unik. Sedangkan desain adalah menetapkan cetak biru (blue print) rumah yang akan dibangun
beserta bahan-bahan yang diperlukan dan urutan-urutan langkah konstruksinya, maupun kriteria
penyelesaiannya, mulai dari tahap awal sampai dengan tahap akhir, setelah ditetapkan tipe rumah
yang akan dibangun.

Berdasarkan uraian di atas, bahwa untuk dapat melaksanakan tugasnya secara profesional, seorang
guru dituntut dapat memahami dan memliki keterampilan yang memadai dalam mengembangkan
berbagai model pembelajaran yang efektif, kreatif dan menyenangkan, sebagaimana diisyaratkan
dalam Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan.
Mencermati upaya reformasi pembelajaran yang sedang dikembangkan di Indonesia, para guru atau
calon guru saat ini banyak ditawari dengan aneka pilihan model pembelajaran, yang kadang-kadang
untuk kepentingan penelitian (penelitian akademik maupun penelitian tindakan) sangat sulit
menermukan sumber-sumber literarturnya. Namun, jika para guru (calon guru) telah dapat
memahami konsep atau teori dasar pembelajaran yang merujuk pada proses (beserta konsep dan
teori) pembelajaran sebagaimana dikemukakan di atas, maka pada dasarnya guru pun dapat secara
kreatif mencobakan dan mengembangkan model pembelajaran tersendiri yang khas, sesuai dengan
kondisi nyata di tempat kerja masing-masing, sehingga pada gilirannya akan muncul model-model
pembelajaran versi guru yang bersangkutan, yang tentunya semakin memperkaya khazanah model
pembelajaran yang telah ada.

Behaviorisme merupakan salah satu aliran psikologi yang meyakini bahwa
untuk mengkaji perilaku individu harus dilakukan terhadap setiap aktivitas individu yang
dapat diamati, bukan pada peristiwa hipotetis yang terjadi dalam diri individu. Oleh karena
itu, penganut aliran behaviorisme menolak keras adanya aspek-aspek kesadaran atau
mentalitas dalam individu. Pandangan ini sebetulnya sudah berlangsung lama sejak jaman
Yunani Kuno, ketika psikologi masih dianggap bagian dari kajian filsafat. Namun kelahiran
behaviorisme sebagai aliran psikologi formal diawali oleh J.B. Watson pada tahun 1913 yang
menganggap psikologi sebagai bagian dari ilmu kealaman yang eksperimental dan obyektif,
oleh sebab itu psikologi harus menggunakan metode empiris, seperti : observasi,
conditioning, testing, dan verbal reports.
Teori utama dari Watson yaitu konsep stimulus dan respons (S-R) dalam psikologi.
Stimulus adalah segala sesuatu obyek yang bersumber dari lingkungan. Sedangkan respon
adalah segala aktivitas sebagai jawaban terhadap stimulus, mulai dari tingkat sederhana
hingga tingkat tinggi. Watson tidak mempercayai unsur herediter (keturunan) sebagai
penentu perilaku dan perilaku manusia adalah hasil belajar sehingga unsur lingkungansangat penting. Pemikiran Watson menjadi dasar bagi para penganut behaviorisme
berikutnya.
Teori-teori yang dikembangkan oleh kelompok behaviorisme terutama banyak dihasilkan melalui
berbagai eksperimen terhadap binatang. Berikut ini disajikan beberapa teori penting yang dihasilkan
oleh kelompok behaviorisme:
1. Connectionism ( S-R Bond) menurut Thorndike.
Dari eksperimen yang dilakukan Thorndike terhadap kucing menghasilkan hukum-hukum belajar,
diantaranya:
Law of Effect; artinya bahwa jika sebuah respons menghasilkan efek yang
memuaskan, maka hubungan Stimulus – Respons akan semakin kuat. Sebaliknya,
semakin tidak memuaskan efek yang dicapai respons, maka semakin lemah pula
hubungan yang terjadi antara Stimulus- Respons.

Law of Readiness; artinya bahwa kesiapan mengacu pada asumsi bahwa kepuasan
organisme itu berasal dari pemdayagunaan satuan pengantar (conduction unit),
dimana unit-unit ini menimbulkan kecenderungan yang mendorong organisme untuk
berbuat atau tidak berbuat sesuatu.
Law of Exercise; artinya bahwa hubungan antara Stimulus dengan Respons akan
semakin bertambah erat, jika sering dilatih dan akan semakin berkurang apabila
jarang atau tidak dilatih.
2. Classical Conditioning menurut Ivan Pavlov
Dari eksperimen yang dilakukan Pavlov terhadap seekor anjing menghasilkan hukum-hukum belajar,
diantaranya :
Law of Respondent Conditioning yakni hukum pembiasaan yang dituntut. Jika dua
macam stimulus dihadirkan secara simultan (yang salah satunya berfungsi sebagai
reinforcer), maka refleks dan stimulus lainnya akan meningkat.
Law of Respondent Extinction yakni hukum pemusnahan yang dituntut. Jika refleks
yang sudah diperkuat melalui Respondent conditioning itu didatangkan kembali
tanpa menghadirkan reinforcer, maka kekuatannya akan menurun.
3. Operant Conditioning menurut B.F. Skinner
Dari eksperimen yang dilakukan B.F. Skinner terhadap tikus dan selanjutnya terhadap burung
merpati menghasilkan hukum-hukum belajar, diantaranya :
Law of operant conditining yaitu jika timbulnya perilaku diiringi dengan stimulus
penguat, maka kekuatan perilaku tersebut akan meningkat.
Law of operant extinction yaitu jika timbulnya perilaku operant telah diperkuat
melalui proses conditioning itu tidak diiringi stimulus penguat, maka kekuatanperilaku tersebut akan menurun bahkan musnah.
Reber (Muhibin Syah, 2003) menyebutkan bahwa yang dimaksud dengan operant adalah sejumlah
perilaku yang membawa efek yang sama terhadap lingkungan. Respons dalam operant conditioning
terjadi tanpa didahului oleh stimulus, melainkan oleh efek yang ditimbulkan oleh reinforcer.
Reinforcer itu sendiri pada dasarnya adalah stimulus yang meningkatkan kemungkinan timbulnya
sejumlah respons tertentu, namun tidak sengaja diadakan sebagai pasangan stimulus lainnya seperti
dalam classical conditioning.
4. Social Learning menurut Albert Bandura

Teori belajar sosial atau disebut juga teori observational learning adalah sebuah teori belajar yang
relatif masih baru dibandingkan dengan teori-teori belajar lainnya. Berbeda dengan penganut
Behaviorisme lainnya, Bandura memandang Perilaku individu tidak semata-mata refleks otomatis
atas stimulus (S-R Bond), melainkan juga akibat reaksi yang timbul sebagai hasil interaksi antara
lingkungan dengan skema kognitif individu itu sendiri. Prinsip dasar belajar menurut teori ini, bahwa
yang dipelajari individu terutama dalam belajar sosial dan moral terjadi melalui peniruan (imitation)
dan penyajian contoh perilaku (modeling). Teori ini juga masih memandang pentingnya conditioning.
Melalui pemberian reward dan punishment, seorang individu akan berfikir dan memutuskan perilaku
sosial mana yang perlu dilakukan.
Hakikat dan Pengertian Belajar

Belajar merupakan salah satu faktor yang mempengaruhi dan berperan penting dalam pembentukan
pribadi dan perilaku individu. Nana Syaodih Sukmadinata (2005) menyebutkan bahwa sebagian
terbesar perkembangan individu berlangsung melalui kegiatan belajar. Lantas, apa sesungguhnya
belajar itu ?
Di bawah ini disampaikan tentang pengertian belajar dari para ahli :
Moh. Surya (1997) : “belajar dapat diartikan sebagai suatu proses yang dilakukan oleh
individu untuk memperoleh perubahan perilaku baru secara keseluruhan, sebagai
hasil dari pengalaman individu itu sendiri dalam berinteraksi dengan
lingkungannya”.
Metode permainan adalah cara mengajar yang dilaksanakan dalam untuk permainan. Sedangkan
metode permainan dalam pembelajaran mate adalah cara untuk menyampaikan pelajaran mate
dengan sarana bermain. Metode permainan dalam pembelajaran dapat memberikan kesempatan bagi
siswa untuk terlibat langsung dalam pembelajaran dan membuat siswa merasa senang terhadap mate.Satuan pengukuran dapat diartikan sebagai hasil pengukuran yang diterapkan pada suatu keadaan
atau benda. Satuan pengukuran dapat dibedakan atas satuan pengukuran tidak baku dan satuan
pengukuran baku.Bagi siswa yang mengalami kesulitan dalam belajar matematika, tidak berminat,
dan tidak mudah untuk menguasai matematika dalam satuan ukuran panjang dengan metode
permainan dapat membantu proses kegiatan belajar matematika. Berdasarkan alasan di atas maka
dilakukan penelitian mengenai penggunaan metode permainan dalam embelajaran matematika
pengukuran panjang di kelas II SD agar siswa dapat menguasai materi pengukuran panjang dengan
baik. Pembelajaran matematika dengan metode permainan dilakukan dengan menggunakan benda-
benda di sekitar anak sehingga lebih mudah untuk dikenali.Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah
penelitian tindakan kelas yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui penggunaan metode permainan dalam
embelajaran matematika pengukuran panjang di kelas II SD yang dilaksanakan dalam 2 siklus,

masing-masing siklus terdiri dari 2 kegiatan pembelajaran. Adapun uraian hasil penelitian akan
disajikan dalam 3 sub bab yaitu tindakan, deskripsi pelaksanaan dan refleksi serta pembahasan. Pada
setiap kegiatan siswa melakukan permainan, mengerjakan LKS dan evaluasi formatif untuk
mengetahui adanya peningkatan pemahaman siswa dilihat dari hasil prestasinya.Setelah dilaksanakan
2 siklus pembelajaran, diperoleh hasil sebagai berikut:
(1) dengan penggunaan metode permainan dalam pembelajaran matematika dapat membantu siswa
lebih menguasai materi pengukuran panjang, (2) alat permainan diambil dari benda-benda yang ada
di sekitar anak sehingga dapat membantu siswa dalam mengenal nama-nama benda tersebut dengan
baik, (3) model permainan dibuat secara bervariasi sehingga mampu menarik minat siswa, tidak
menimbulkan kejenuhan dan siswa semakin tertantang dalam mengikuti pembelajaran matematika,
(4) penjelasan aturan permainan disertai dengan peragaan terlebih dahulu oleh guru dan dalam
penjelasannya menggunakan bahasa yang jelas dan sederhana, (5) memberi bimbingan bagi siswa
yang mempunyai kemampuan berpikir kurang dan memberi pujian terhadap siswa yang berani untuk
menjawab atau melaksanakan tugas dengan baik.
Pemetaan Ide dengan Pemikiran Visual

Menerapkan kemampuan mengajar yang telah dimiliki kadang masih belum tereksplor dengan baik saat mengajar. Entah kurang daya kreatifitas pada diri pendidik atau masih terpaku pada cara pembelajaran model lama yang monotondan kurang diminati siswa.
Banyak pendakatan-pendekatan yang muncul dari ide-ide kreatif para pecinta pendidikan yangmempunyai harapan besar dapat membantu dengan pemikirannya tersebut.
Dapat menyajikan pembelajaran yang menyenangkan sekaligus dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar merupakan suatu hal yang diimpikan oleh para pendidik.Beberapa tahun terakhir Indonesiatengah membenahi pembelajaran dengan menggunakan PAIKEM yaitu pembelajaran yang aktif,inovatif, kreatif, efektif, dan menyenangkan.
Namun belum sepenuhnya dapat mengenai sasaran yaitu pendidikan dan proses pembelajaranguru pada khususnya. Masih kakunya pembelajaran yang diterapkan oleh para pendidik menambah beban koreksi untuk lebih kreatif.Hingga menuntut para guru memiliki ijasah S1untuk mengembangkan ketrampilan dalam mengajar dan keluasan wawasan.
Kemampuan berkomunikasi dalam budaya apapun di dunia yang sekarang semakin visual ini.Mengharapkan para pendidik dapat mengembangkan model pembelajaran denganmenggabungkan semua gaya pembelajaran yang dapat diterapkan.
“Mindscape merupakan perwakilan visual ide dengan menggunakan gambar dan kata” (NancyMargulies ; 2008 : 14). Dalam membantu siswa dan pendidik untuk belajar ketrampilan yangsesuai dengan kemajuan jaman. Mindscaping dapat diterapkan untuk memudahkan pembelajarandengan menggabungkan semua gaya pembelajaran-auditory ketika orang lebih tertarik untuk mendengarkan, visual, kinestik, symbol dan menciptakan pola menghubungkannya.
Banyak guru yang menemukan ide bahwa pemetaan merupakan cara untuk menemukan danmenciptakan symbol. Dengan memetakan ide, siswa dapat membuat catatan presentasi,
rangkuman materi pelajaran dan memudahkan untuk mengingat materi yang telah lama. Dengan

midscaping dapat diciptakan proses belajar yang lebih menyenangkan dengan bantuan simbol-simbol.
Mindscape dalam bentuk lain lebih bebas atau ada pula yang tampak seperti diagram jaringankalimat dengan tambahan symbol. Pemetaan diharapkan dapat membantu untuk membacakeseluruahan gambar dan juga aspek individual dan mendorong siswa berfikir tidak hanya dalam
hal informasi yang mereka inginkan untuk dikomunikasikan, namun juga dalam hal hubungandiantara ide.
Metode ini dapat menggali gagasan, mengembangkan ide/ gagasan, melihat pola atau hubungandari pemikiran, dan mengembangkan pemikiran yang kompleks untuk lebih mudah memahami
bacaan juga memudahkan mengingat dan mempertahankan ingatan.
Para pendidik di harapkan dapat mengembangkan metode ini atau bahakn mengembangkanmetode lain dengan kreatifitasnya. Dan dapat pula berinovasi untuk menemukan atau bahkanmenciptakan metode yang tepat digunakan dalam pembelajaran.
