Child Development Services protect child safety, promote healthy births and nurture child and youth development.

• Expectant and new parents receive support and education leading to healthy birth outcomes and child wellness.

• Children experience safe, caring environments and engaging, age-appropriate experiences that foster healthy development and set the stage for future learning.

Family Preservation Services help families build the strengths that set the stage for the joy and togetherness they want for themselves. Families work to:

• improve knowledge and skills• develop close nurturing relationships• tap into their resiliency when challenges arise• connect with concrete supports to address any

barriers to family success.

Prevention Services build public awareness and knowledge about substance abuse and its consequences, while working directly with young people to build their capacities for avoiding substance abuse. Prevention Services:

• educate and counsel individuals and groups about substance abuse and its consequences

• raise awareness• conduct community surveys about knowledge

and attitudes concerning substance use and other factors

• help to formulate community-wide responses.

Through Residential Services, participants learn how to maintain abstinence. Additionally residents will learn to:

• improve the functioning and development of coping skills

• strengthen independent living skills and social skills• access community services, including support groups• attain self-sufficiency and independent living• return to the workforce

Basic Needs Services provide assistance that helps clients avert homelessness, utility shut-off, hunger and medicine shortage.

• Food pantries provide a supply of food to help individuals and families improve food security and free up income for other bills.

• Financial assistance programs provide negotiated budget agreements and direct payments to landlords, utility companies, and pharmacies along with trouble-shooting to help people avert eviction, utility shut-off, hunger or medicine shortage.

Support and Development Services help clients prevent future financial crises and position themselves for long-term stability. The program connects clients to ongoing supports that help stretch earned dollars for short-term stability, and assist them in setting goals, accessing opportunities and gaining knowledge for long-term stability.

The Kinship Family and Youth service priority for Catholic Charities of Steuben helps families develop the capacities for healthy family functioning and promotes healthy child development.

The Substance Free Living service priority for Catholic Charities of Steuben reduces the prevalence of substance abuse and its negative consequences in the community.

The Turning Point service priority for Catholic Charities of Steuben alleviates the effects of social injustice by stabilizing families in economic crisis, and supporting them as they strive for self-sufficiency.
