Way back in 1989 when I set up Artista, creative agencies purely and simply offered graphic design. Times have changed. Yes, of course you still need graphic design. But you also need multi-media and web design. And it helps to have marketing and PR support too. As your requirements have grown, so have we and we’ve changed our name too - Ocean.

At Ocean we’ve established our own surf culture, building websites which are visual, functional and useable. And unlike some pros in this game, we speak in a language you’ll understand.

We use all the latest technologies to create the look and feel of the site, plus a few clever industry secrets for all the nifty, dynamic bits. We’ll build your site in a way that allows you to make your own changes and updates at the click of a mouse, but if you’re still not sure, we’ll also do it for you.

One big wave we caught recently was the contract to design and develop a website for

world-wide logistics company CCL who were looking for a creatively designed, dynamic site which would be straightforward and quick to use for existing customers and visually tempting for potential ones.

Managing Director of CCL Callum Bastock said: “We wanted a website that was striking, easy to navigate and totally interactive for our customers. The end result achieved everything in the brief and beyond. It’s extensive, yet incredibly easy to use, with all the on-line features you might expect from a leading logistics provider and so much more. The Ocean team really pulled it off ”

Developing a Strategy for Parental Involvement in South Ayrshire SchoolsDeveloping a Strategy for Parental Involvement in South Ayrshire Schools

The Scottish Schools (Parental Involvement) Act 2006 is concerned with improving parents’ involvement in their child’s education and in the life of the school generally. The main purpose of this document is to enable all parents and carers in South Ayrshire to be:

education and learning

participants in the life of the school, and

views on school education generally and work in partnership with the school

The “Parental Involvement in South Ayrshire Schools – a partnership with parents” consultation strategy is designed to seek the views of parents and professionals who

parental involvement in children’s education in South Ayrshire schools.

This consultation document has been produced to meet the needs of parents, carers, head teachers, teaching staff and other partners in establishing and developing Parent Councils in South Ayrshire schools.

This new act offers us an opportunity to build on the

good work carried out by School Boards, PTAs and other parent groups in South Ayrshire schools. It is our intention to consult with all stakeholders to take this legacy forward and

parents are the fi rst and ongoing educators of their children and know them best. The Scottish (Parental Involvement) Act 2006 also provides us with an opportunity to help parents and schools to work together closely to ensure that children benefi t from this shared knowledge and

will help in the drive to ensure all children reach their full potential.

Janice and Iain Passant from Ayr commissioned us to create a beautiful summer house which would be the focal point of their garden. The summer house now serves as an additional room for entertaining friends but is also a comfortable garden retreat for Janice and Iain in which to relax and enjoy a good book or the Sunday papers. The exterior is constructed from red wood pine and the roof is covered in Cedar shingles. Comfy cushions and plants provide the finishing touches.

A 5 star luxury hotel chain approached us to create a stunning tree house in the grounds of one of their hotels which would act as a conference break-out room with a difference. The tree house we created accommodates up to 30 delegates, is fully plumbed and heated and has been superbly received: “It’s astonishing and demonstrates a practicality and unique atmosphere that needs to be experienced to be appreciated” (Operations Director) “A fantastic success! Everyone loved the Tree House, and the African theme event was the icing on the cake, our guests partied well into the night. It really was a classic evening at the Tree House” (Maintenance Manager)

We approached Ayr College to see if we could put our passion for nurturing and developing creative talent to good use with some of their students.

We teamed up with final year students from the HND Graphic Design course. To give them a taste of commercial design, we gave them a creative brief to develop a new brand for Ocean which they worked on as a “real time” project, mirroring the Ocean designers every step of the way.

The students who created the best 5 brands have now been asked to design an advert for Ocean, with first prize a month’s paid summer placement with us. The winner will be announced in May.

It was all hands on deck when Cumbrae Initiative appointed us to bring to life their idea of a “Cumbrae Sensory Trail”. The

concept of the Trail was to encourage visitors to go round Cumbrae’s 11 mile coastline and experience a special sensory treat along the way.

TenderingInitially we had to show we were up for the task by going through two fairly detailed tendering procedures. We had to prove our worth across several creative disciplines - sign design, scriptwriting, copywriting, leaflet design, web development, print management and audio production. A few late nights and a couple of trips to Millport later, and we’d clinched it.

Branding & MarkersWithin the agency Derek landed the role of project manager and got the design team to start first, creating visuals for markers for each of the five sensory points. This quickly led to a brand identity for the whole project and the idea of a ball at the top of each trail marker which visitors would “touch for luck”. Careful liaison with a specialist engineering company meant the markers were produced and installed smoothly and accurately.

Scripting & RecordingThen it was over to our communications people to come up with a script for an audio recording. A field trip with some local residents helped with research, but once the script was written, who would narrate? Scottish broadcaster and Ayrshire man Bill Torrance,

whose credits include The Beechgrove Garden, was chosen as the best man for the job. A highly entertaining morning at Westsound recording studios ensued, with the script transforming into a 12 minute audio guide.

Design & MultimediaMeanwhile back at the agency, the graphic designers were producing ideas for a vibrant promotional leaflet and trail map, and across the hall in multimedia, an interactive website was being developed, which would include a podcast of the recording.

Outcome & VerdictNow it’s all over and the client’s verdict? “Fab! All the guys really pulled together and bent over backwards for us. The fact they had all the skills under one roof really made life easier for us.”
