Explain to your children that the Roman Empire did not actually end with the Fall of Rome. During the time known as the Dark and Middle Ages of the West, the East was experiencing a golden age. In fact, the Roman Empire did not fall and the Byzantine Empire did not end until the 15th century (1453 AD) when the Ottoman Empire laid siege to Constantinople and conquered it.

The hymnographer, St. Romanos the Melodist was born in the 5th century AD. This Greek hymn-writer not only composed more than 8,000 kontakia, but also composed the Kontakion of the Nativity of Our Lord after receiving a visitation from the Theotokos. This kontakion is said to be the first, thus St. Romanos is held to be the originator. (Icon of St. Romanos the Melodist)

After adding St. Maximus and the Council to their Book of Centuries, ask your children to find Constantinople on the map. St. Andrew later became the Archbishop of Crete. He was not only a great hierarch and theologian, but one of the greatest hymnographers of the Orthodox Church. Every year during Great Lent, his Great Canon of repentance is served in the Church, during the first week at Compline and on the Thursday of the 5th week at the All-Night Vigil during Matins. This week we’re reading about St. Alfred the Great in The Story of the Middle Ages. Spend some time learning more about him.
Having just covered the sixth council, we’ll now begin learning about the Seventh Ecumenical Council which took place in Nicaea in 787 AD. During this time of struggle we witness the great triumph of Orthodoxy, the restoration of the Holy Icons. The Iconoclastic Period began in 723 AD and lasted until 843 AD, when the Holy Icons were restored. The formal restoration of the icons is known as the first Sunday of Orthodoxy, the triumph we commemorate every year on the first Sunday of Great Lent. Ask your children to add these dates to their Book of Centuries. Do they remember where Nicaea is located? Look it up on a map. (Icon of the Triumph of Orthodoxy)

This week we read about the passion-bearer St. Edward the Martyr in The Story of the Middle Ages. Spend some time learning more about him.
During this age of grace the Church received many blessings from the Theotokos. During the 10th century, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to a monk on Mt. Athos and sang the familiar hymn Axion Estin (It is Truly Meet) and inscribed it with his finger on a tile. Add these dates to the Book of Centuries and ask your children to find Mt. Athos on a map. This week we begin to read about the events of the early 11th century in The Story of the Middle Ages. It was during the first half of the 11th century (1054 AD) that the church of Rome formally separated itself from the Orthodox Church, in the event commonly known as the Great Schism.
This is a good opportunity for children working in Level C to grasp the differences in doctrine between the Orthodox Church and Roman Catholicism. Fr. Andrew Damick offers an in-depth presentation, clearly articulated and historically balanced, in his podcast series Orthodoxy and Heterodoxy on Ancient Faith Radio.

This Age of Grace: Theodore Icon of the Theotokos
In this age of grace, the 13th century, we witness another miracle of St. Luke’s icons, the Theodore Icon of the Theotokos. In the year 1239 AD the icon was seen being carried through the city of Kostroma by the hands of St. Theodore Stratelates, who appeared radiant. The next day the icon was found near a tree by one of the princes and brought to the church of St. Theodore.
The icon was named after the Great Prince Yaroslav, father of St. Alexander Nevsky. (Yaroslav had been given the name Theodore in baptism.) Throughout his life, St. Alexander often prayed before this icon. The Theodore Icon of the Theotokos is a wonder-working icon, which means that many miracles have been attributed to it. St. Gregory Palamas (1296-1359 AD) was a monk of Mt. Athos. (He lived in both the Vatopedi and Esphigmenou Monasteries.) St. Gregory later became Archbishop of Thessalonica and is known for his great defense of hesychasm in a controversy with the monk Barlaam of Calabria, the humanistic scholar who valued education over the experience of prayer and the ascetic life.
