Suicide Awareness

• MYTH:• Asking about it plants the thought of doing it• If I ignore the minor attempt, then that means I

addressed it• It runs in the family• Few professionals commit suicide• If they want to kill themselves, then there is

nothing stopping them• Suicidal people are unwilling to seek help

Suicide Awareness

• Awareness of Warning Signs: (cont.)• Common characteristics of suicide victims

• Intense emotional pain • Frustrated needs for security, achievement, or

friendship. • Suicide is seen as only solution. • Hopeless, hapless, and helpless. • Stop the pain by ending awareness. • Black and white thinking: death the only answer. • Feelings of ambivalence; want to die, but want to live. • Give clues about imminent suicide. • Want to run away from the pain. • Lifelong pattern of poor coping skills. 8

• Free expression of opinions and ideas • Air University faculty, students, and staff are members

of a learned profession, and members of their respective educational organizations. The free exchange of opinions and ideas is essential to the educational process and, to the greatest extent possible, faculty, students, and staff are encouraged to speak and write freely. Even in this academic setting, however, the importance of Air University’s military mission requires limits on some types of expression.

• Sexual assault includes rape, nonconsensual sodomy (oral or anal sex), indecent assault (unwanted, inappropriate sexual contact or fondling), or attempts to commit these acts.

• Sexual assault can occur without regard to gender or spousal relationship or age of victim.
