our goalsAs an institutional program, AAAS is structured to:

• Combine knowledge of the African diaspora with intellectual and practical training in specific areas to create more effective communities and global partnerships.

• Prepare students of all ethnicities to better understand, value and more effectively participate in our increasingly diverse society.

• Provide students with a foundation for advanced studies in such fields/professions as history, English, sociology, political science, communications, arts, public administration, law, psychology, social work, education and business.

African and African American Studies

Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in African and African American Studies will complete a minimum of 45 credit hours. Fifteen hours will come from a core set of courses required for all students. A second set of fifteen hours will be specific to the concentration chosen by the student. The final set of fifteen hours will be considered related area requirements. Students can fulfill the related area requirements by taking additional courses, focused on our key areas of study, offered directly by the AAAS unit or classes offered by units outside of AAAS chosen in consultation with the unit academic advisor.

African and African American studies (AAAS) is an interdisciplinary B.A. program that focuses on people of African descent throughout the world and the diversity of past and present experiences of those who live in:
