AFFIRMATIVE & NEGATIVE STATEMENTS

Affirmative = saying or answering that the answer is YES rather than no

• She speaks English. – Ella habla inglés.• Mr. Smith is a teacher. – Sr. Smith es maestro.

Negative = denying, expressing the contradictory of something, denoting the absence of something, expressing negation

• She doesn’t speak English. - Ella no habla inglés.• Mr. Smith is not a teacher. - Sr. Smith no es maestro.

What about in questions/answers?When the answer to a question is negative, you need TWO negative words.

• ¿Hablas español? – Do you speak Spanish?• No, no hablo español. – No, I don’t speak Spanish.

• ¿Está Carlos en clase? – Is Carlos in class?• No, Carlos no está en clase. – No, Carlos is not in class.

• ¿Siempre estudias?– Do you always study?• No, nunca estudio. – No, I never study.

ALGUIEN - somebody NADIE - nobody

ALGÚN (-o,-a, -os, -as) – some, something

Negative Words – dónde y cómo• Alone, before the verb:

• Nadie habla.• Él nunca come.• Alfredo tampoco baila.

• Used with “no,” after verb (double-negs ok in Spanish!)• No habla nadie.• Él no come nunca• Alfredo no baila tampoco.

ALGUNO/NINGUNO – What’s the deal?

• Alguno, alguna, algunos, algunas• Ninguno, ninguna, ningunos, ningunas

• Match the ending of the word to the gender/number of the noun it goes with• ¿Tienes algunas revistas? No, no tengo ninguna.

• Alguno / ninguno drop the “o” before a masculine singular noun

• ¿Tienes algún libro? No, no tengo ningún libro., No, no tengo ninguno.
