Mayor’s Welcome
As Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, I amhonoured to be hosting the tenth Armed Forces Day on behalf of Scarborough BoroughCouncil.
Our event is one of hundreds held across thecountry and we have many opportunities foryou here today to say ‘Thank You’ tocurrently serving troops, service families, veterans and cadets. This year we welcomethe Yorkshire Regiment who are “meeting & greeting” you around the event site – sodo have a chat with them and show them a ‘Warm Scarborough Welcome’.
We should remember that 100 years ago the First World War ended and a new worldbegan. In 2018 we say a special ‘Thank You’ to the many men, women and childrenwho lost their lives both in service and on the home front. To show your thanks make apoppy at the Stories of Remembrance project stall here today or join in a workshop(see page 10).
Also this year, the Royal Air Force celebrate their 100th birthday. To mark thisoccasion, we welcome RAF Fylingdales, 739 Air Cadets and veteran personnel as they‘Commemorate, Celebrate and Inspire’ their achievements. Our charity collection willcontribute to RAF100, Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Fund and Royal MarinesAssociation - in memory of our much missed standard bearer for Scarborough RoyalMarines Association and valued local community activist, Mr Clive Linton RM.
We have opened a Book of Remembrance for the veterans we have lost over the last10 years who enjoyed attending our event. I invite you to honour their memory byadding your own dedication. The Book of Remembrance signing points are shown onthe map overleaf. They will also be available at the Town Hall until 11 November 2018.
The success of the day can be attributed to the many services of the Council and theamazing support of volunteers who work tirelessly to make this day special, withoutthem this event would not be possible. I would also like to thank all sponsors, inparticular our main funding partner the Ministry of Defence and the South Bay TradersAssociation.
I hope you will enjoy this special day and say “Thank you” to our Armed Services personnel, past, present and future.
Cllr Joe Plant Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough 2018/19

Tender Comrade
God save our Gracious Queen! Long live our noble Queen! God save the Queen!
What will you do when the war is over, tender comradeWhen we lay down our weary guns
When we return home to our wives and familiesAnd look into the eyes of our sons
What will you say of the bond we had, tender comradeWill you say that we were braveAs the shells fell all around us
Or that we wept and cried for our mothersAnd cursed our fathers
For forgetting that all men are brothers
Will you say that we were heroesOr that fear of dying among strangers
Tore our innocence and false shame awayAnd from that moment on deep in my heart I knew
That I would only give my life for love
Brothers in arms in each other armsWas the only time that I was not afraid
What will you do when the war is over, tender comradeWhen we cast off these khaki clothes
And go our separate waysWhat will you say of the bond we had
Tender comrade

Welcome
A thousand ages in Thy sight Are like an evening gone; Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun.
Time, like an ever rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day.
O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be Thou our guard while troubles last, And our eternal home.
Hymn O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home;
Under the shadow of Thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is Thine arm alone, And our defence is sure.
Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting Thou art God, To endless years the same.
