As part of the "JUST DO WHAT'S RIGHT!" program, TSSAA recognizes member schools that have made the effort to remind theirathletic family that there is a particular code of conduct, a particular level of expected behavior, and a way to act that is proper ifone wishes to be a part of an athletic contest, regardless of how they participate.

"JUST DO WHAT'S RIGHT!" focuses on the foundation of what we hope all participants will do. Just do what you are supposed todo in representing yourself, your family, your school and community.

Those schools that received no reported unsportsmanlike conduct incidents during the 2011-12 season have received a certificatehighlighting the "JUST DO WHAT'S RIGHT!" logo and this effort. We are specifically recognizing proper sportsmanship at athleticcontests, but we all understand that the athletic contests are a small part of our educational program.

DIVISIONAL AWARDSLocal officials associations have been asked to nominate schools that they service that have displayed this overall positive effort toteach, expect, and demand a positive atmosphere of sportsmanship at their particular contests. Member schools have also beenasked to nominate individuals or schools for special recognition for going the extra mile to do what's right. Nominations have alsocome from representatives of the Tennessee Obervers Program for Sports. The TOPS observers have shared the positive effortsthat have been recognized at athletic contests across our state.

From these nominees and the schools that have received no reported unsportsmanlike conduct during the previous school year,27 schools have been selected to receive the A.F. Bridges Award at the divisional level. Three Class A, three Class AA, and threeClass AAA schools in each grand division have been recognized for a total of nine schools in each division and 27 schools overall. These schools will be presented "JUST DO WHAT'S RIGHT!" recognition banners at the regional meetings in each grand division ofour state during November. Again, the TSSAA Board of Control has earmarked $27,000 toward a scholarship fund to recognizeoutstanding student athletes from the A. F. Bridges Divisional Finalists. Each school will receive $1,000 toward a scholarship torecognize an outstanding student athlete who represents the essence of good sportsmanship and citizenship. The criteria for thisscholarship will be established by the school, and student athletes will be recognized later during the school year.

STATE AWARD OF EXCELLENCEOf these 27 divisional recipients, one school in each class will receive Tennessee's top award for overall outstanding effort in itsdivision. These schools will be presented the A.F. BRIDGES STATE AWARD OF EXCELLENCE. This is the highest award that canbe bestowed upon a school to honor its overall efforts to promote citizenship and sportsmanship at school, and at athleticcontests.

ATHLETIC DISTRICT AWARDSThe A.F. Bridges Awards program includes awards for School System Administrator of the Year, Principal of the Year, AthleticDirector of the Year, Female Coach of the Year, Male Coach of the Year, Official of the Year, and Contributor of the Year.Recognition will be made in the above mentioned categories in each of the nine athletic districts in our state. Nominations havebeen made by a Citizenship/Sportsmanship Committee in each athletic district and final selection has been made by a StateSelection Committee. The awards are named the A.F. BRIDGES AWARD in honor of the TSSAA's first executive secretary.

A.F. BRIDGESA.F. Bridges was born in Athens, Louisiana on March 17, 1905. He attended school in Lincoln County, Tennessee and graduated from CentralHS in Fayetteville in 1922. He earned his B.A. and M.A. from Peabody College in Nashville. He began his work as a teacher and coach atPeabody HS in Trenton, and after a number of years with the Milan, Henderson, and Covington schools, hereturned in 1936 as Superintendent of the Trenton schools. Soon after, he became the Superintendent of theCovington City Schools. After three years in Covington, Mr. Bridges was named as the first full-time ExecutiveSecretary of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association and established the first TSSAA state officein Trenton in 1946. Under the leadership of A. Foster Bridges, athletics in the state of Tennessee reached alevel of excellence and competence that earned the respect of all people. Mr. Bridges brought nationalrecognition to Tennessee in HS athletics, and particularly in the field of girls' athletics and in the establishingof one of the most respected training programs for officials in the nation.Mr. Bridges was a person of highprinciples who displayed firmness and fairness, as well as the high ideals of ethics and integrity, as he andmany other school people established the foundation of TSSAA across our state. It is our sincere wish thatthrough honoring Mr. Bridges by naming this awards program after him, we will have the opportunity toremind young people of the positive characteristics, not only of this gentleman, but of athletics in general andparticipants specifically.

CORPORATE SPONSORSThe corporate sponsors and supporters play an integral part in the TSSAA and the TSSAA State Championships. TSSAA would

like to thank our corporate sponsors and supporters for their dedication and hard work this fall during the state championships.

BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee - BlueCross Invites Fans to Show Their School Spirit

While this year’s BlueCross Bowl teams were busy battling it out on the field, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee took thecompetition off of the field and into hometown communities with the first-ever BlueCross Bowl Fan-Faceoff.The competition pitted fans against each other to determine which school had the most school spirit. Each school was assigned a

unique keyword and fans were challenged to text that keyword to a specific number before the clock ran out in their respectivegames. The school with the most texts received a $1,000 donation from BlueCross.

The Fan-Faceoff allowed students, parents, faculty and hometowns to show support for their championship teams whileproviding BlueCross an opportunity to give back to the communities that are so important to the success of the BlueCross Bowl.Congratulations to the following Fan-Faceoff winning schools: Webb School of Knoxville (II-A), Ensworth (II-AA), Gordonsville (1A),Adamsville (2A), Milan (3A), Covington (4A), Columbia Central (5A) and Maryville (6A).

TENNESSEE TITANS MR. FOOTBALL AWARDS

The Tennessee Middle SchoolCommittee met for the first time this schoolyear on November 14th. Members inattendance were Chic Nute, Vic King, KenHilliard, India Weaver, Tim Bell, Matt Calvert, and Jason McKinney. Mr. McWhirterwelcomed new committee member, JasonMcKinney. He represents the Chattanooga area.

Committee members were given a list of newmember schools, and they decided on theappropriate Area for each new school. UnakaElementary School will be classified as East TN

Area 1 A; Grand Junction Elementary School, Adamsville ElementarySchool, Summertown Elementary School, Coulter Grove IntermediateSchool, and Montgomery Ridge Intermediate School are onlyparticipating in cooperative programs; Westwood Middle School willbe placed in Middle TN Area 4 AA; Southern Avenue Middle Schooland Grandview Heights Middle School will be classified in West TNArea 1, and their class will be determined after their enrollmentnumbers are confirmed.

The committee discussed setting the classification for the next fouryears. The TSSAA state office will provide the committee with the 7thgrade enrollment number that are turned into the state by the schools inJanuary. Using those numbers, each area of the state (east, middle, andwest) will set their classification. East TN and Middle TN will havethree classes each and West TN will have two classes. The newclassification will be set in April, and the classification period will befor four years, keeping in line with the high school association. Schoolswill only be allowed to move up or down within that period if theyappeal the TSSAA state office and have a 20% increase or decrease intheir enrollment numbers.

The TMSAA Committee discussed why schools do not join theTMSAA in certain areas of the state. The Independent Game Rule once

again came up for discussion. Mr. McWhirter asked the committeemembers to bring more feedback from their schools to the nextmeeting. Other issues brought up were: member schools and who theycan play, schools must join the association for all sports that theyrecognize, and there is a lack of tournaments for some sports in parts ofthe state. Mr. McWhirter and Mr. Bell plan to meet with system-wideathletic directors in Middle Tennessee to discuss these issues further.

It was asked that the committee members submit their area andsectional basketball information to the TSSAA state office as soon aspossible, so it can be posted on the website.

The Committee reviewed the TMSAA Sports Calendar. All agreedthat the changes made last year make the calendar easier to follow.Chic Nute proposed increasing the number of games allowed insoftball and baseball from 16 to 18. The committee approved theproposal, and it will be brought before the TSSAA Legislative Councilat their December meeting. The committee was reminded thattournaments count as 2 regular season games for all sports. However, the season-ending tournament does not count against the number ofregular season games that are allowed. The committee agreed that ifthe high school sports calendar changed its wording from, “Monday, week of…” to “Saturday, week of…” they would recommend that themiddle school calendar be changed as well.

The Committee reviewed the TMSAA Bylaws. No proposals weremade at this time. They did discuss the possibility of the CoachesEducation Program moving entirely online through the NFHS, ratherthan having a component of the program in a classroom setting. If thiswere to occur, the course would cost less, and it would be easier forcoaches to take the class because they would not have to reserve a spotand travel. The possibility of non-faculty coaches being required tocomplete the course prior to beginning coaching rather than having 5years to complete the requirement was also discussed.

Mr. McWhirter will have the proposed state-wide officials pay scalefor middle school sports available for committee members at the nextTMSAA meeting.

The next TMSAA Committee meeting is set for February 13, 2013,at 9:00am.

Two things: both cute fordifferent reasons. The picturesare my grandchildren, three littlegirls. It was a surprise gift. They came over and took two ofmy magic hats from my magicroom. Yes, I have a magic room.Come to think of it, we all shouldhave a magic room. The secondis a story from a children’s pastor

friend of mine. I loved it and thought you might as well. We are open for business this semester. Drop

Courtney an email at [email protected] to sign up forthe Magic of Stephen at your school. Hope to see yousoon.

Subject: Sermon

A Baptist pastor was presenting a children's sermon.During the sermon, he asked the children if they knewwhat the resurrection was. Now, asking questions duringchildren's sermons is crucial, but at the same time, asking children questions in front of a congregation canalso be very dangerous.

Having asked the children if they knew the meaningof the resurrection, a little boy raised his hand. Thepastor called on him and the little boy said, "I know thatif you have a resurrection that lasts more than four hoursyou are supposed to call the doctor."

It took over ten minutes for the congregation to settledown enough from their laughter for the worship serviceto be continued.
