DiscipleshipOur Goal
We will look at discipleship as the process by which we become followers of Jesus and, as such,
better soul-winners.

Discipling the Sick
Discipling the SickKey Text
Matthew 15:30, 31 NIV
“Large crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the
mute, and many others,…and he healed them. The people were
amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the
lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.”
Discipling the SickInitial Words
“During His ministry, Jesus devoted more time to healing the sick than
to preaching. …Wherever He went, the tidings of His
mercy preceded Him. Where He passed, the objects of His
compassion were rejoicing in health and making trial of their new-found
powers.” The Ministry of Healing 19, 20.
Discipling the SickQuick Look
1. Christ, the Healing Messiah (Isaiah 61:1, 2)2. Christ’s Total Healing (Mark 2:1-12)3. Christ’s Healing Legacy (Acts 5:12-16)
Discipling the Sick1. Christ, the Healing Messiah
Isaiah 61:1, 2 NKJV
“ ‘The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed
Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the
broken-hearted, to proclaim libertyto the captives, and the opening ofprison…; to proclaim the acceptable
year of the Lord.’ ”
1. Christ, the Healing MessiahHealing Human Brokenness
In antiquity, sickness was considered the result of sinful
actions.Christ’s disciples understood blindness as punishment for
someone’s sinfulness. This suggests that sickness required
not diagnosis or medication but atonement.
1. Christ, the Healing MessiahHealing Human Brokenness
Isaiah foretold a Redeemer who would assume our sickness and
sinfulness.Jesus recognized that His mission
was both to preach and to heal the brokenhearted (Luke 4:17-19).
Many followed Christ because He had touched and healed their
brokenness.
Discipling the Sick2. Christ’s Total Healing
Mark 2:1-12 NKJV“When Jesus saw their faith, He said
to the paralytic, ‘Son your sins are forgiven you.’ … ‘But that you may
know that the Son of Man has power…to forgive sins’ He said…
‘Arise take up your bed….’Immediately he arose…so that all
were amazed and glorified God….”
2. Christ’s Total HealingHealing the Body
Jesus healed more than bodies. His wholistic approach recognized that
physical health was inseparable from spiritual health.
Through physical healing He affected spiritual transformation. That was the
whole purpose. After all, why heal people who in the long run will die
anyway and face eternal destruction?
2. Christ’s Total HealingHealing the Mind and Body
The relationship between mind and body is well-established by medical
science. Anxiety predisposes some to stomach problems. Worry causes
sleep disorders. Uncontrollable anger factors into heart disease.
Teaching people about mental-health principles should highlight the
importance of trusting God.
2. Christ’s Total HealingThe Resurrection and the Life
Jesus offers eternal life in a new world. Jairus’ daughter, the widow’s
son, and Lazarus proved that this too-good-to-be-true offer is authentic.
Disease and accidents might initially prevail, but eternal life would
ultimately conquer. Healing would not happen every time requested,
but everlasting life was guaranteed.
2. Christ’s Total HealingThe Resurrection and the Life
Many times the healing we wantjust simply does not come in the way we want it. Others die from disease,
despite anointing and prayer. We have no answers as to why.
What we do have is something so much better than even a miraculous healing, and that is the promise of
the resurrection to eternal life.
Discipling the Sick3. Christ’s Healing Legacy
Acts 5:12-16 NKJV
“And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders
were done among the people. … So that they brought the sick out into
the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of
Peter passing by might fall on some of them. … And they were all healed.”
3. Christ’s Healing LegacyImportance of Healing Ministry
Miraculous healings and resurrec-tions attended the ministries of
Peter and Paul. These events figured significantly in the church’s growth.God’s eternal presence, signified by
miraculous healing, influenced thousands of religious leaders to accept Christ. Their flock often
followed.
3. Christ’s Healing LegacyImportance of Healing Ministry
Clearly health was an ongoing concern and a healing ministry an
ongoing function of Christ’s church.Healing was listed among the
spiritual gifts. These gifts would benefit believers until Christ’s
second coming, when His personal presence would render them
unneccessary.
Discipling the SickFinal Words
Through physical healing and mental restoration, Jesus made
disciples. Physical restoration itself was never the final objective. The
ultimate goal was always discipleship.
Healing could provide twenty, fifty, perhaps seventy-five additional
quality years. Discipleship offered eternal life with Christ.
