Background

On-line education has become a major implementation tool for educators the past five years. There are a variety of on-line driver education programs that have been developed by commercial companies. In most cases they have used material that has been developed by the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association (ADTSEA). Due to interest and demand for quality driver education, ADTSEA developed the 3.0 Curriculum DVD to assist teachers in providing a quality driver education program. To meet the need for on-line driver education, ADTSEA has taken the next step by providing this curriculum in an on-line version.

Introduction

The ADTSEA Driver Education Online Training Course is designed to provide the student with the basic knowledge necessary to operate an automobile. It is an introduction to the highway transportation system, with emphasis on risk perception and management in the decision-making process. It is designed to supplement classroom, skill and behind-the-wheel training.

The Online Course features the same classroom unit lesson plans and tests contained within the ADTSEA Driver Education Curriculum 3.0 and was developed using the e-learning software program, Moodle. The figure below shows a sample of the ADTSEA Driver Education Online Training Course home page.

Curriculum Structure

The “Driver Education Classroom and In-Car Curriculum” was developed to provide current information and techniques on teaching novice drivers the basics of motor vehicle operation. It was developed specifically to reference:

HOWto DRIVE: The Beginning Driver’s Manual textbook, 14th edition, published by the American Automobile Association, 2011

Other textbooks available include:

Drive Right, 11th edition, published by Pearson, 2010 Responsible Driving, 2006 edition, published by Glencoe/McGraw-Hill

Course Length

The ADTSEA Driver Education 3.0 Curriculum is designed for 45 hours of classroom content. The amount of time it will take to complete the online training will depend on how well the student progresses through the units and activities. The approximate time it will take for a student to complete the unit is included under each unit description. Settings have been established for how long it should take the student to complete each unit. The student must spend a minimum number of hours in each unit as established in the unit settings. Class Resources

It is recommended that each student receives and uses a copy of the textbook while in the online training program. The individual program or provider is responsible for selecting the textbook utilized. Any of the three textbooks listed above will meet the requirements of a quality driver education program. Also, instructors and students should have a copy of their

Page 6: ADTSEA Driver Education Online Training Course

state’s “Driver’s Handbook” for use in the program. If a driver education program utilizes a textbook not listed above, the program or provider will need to match the appropriate textbook reading material to the content of the curriculum. Course Format

Each unit has been designed with printable fact sheets, content, videos, reading assignments, activities, worksheets, review questions and unit tests. While completing each unit, if the student needs to stop in the middle of a unit the next time they log-in they can start where they left off last time. At the top of each unit the student will see their score. Points will be calculated as they complete worksheets. At the bottom of each unit students will see a completion bar, telling them how much of the unit they have completed.

Printable Fact Sheets Prior to the start of each unit is a link to print or save Fact Sheets, which contain the same information on the content pages, but in a printable format.

Content Pages and Reading Assignments Once students are enrolled in the course they will be required to read content pages, as well as specific chapters from the textbook required by the instructor as they proceed through the units. Textbooks referenced in the online program include: the AAA HOW to DRIVE, 14th edition; Drive Right, 11th edition and Responsible Driving, 2006 edition.

Videos Throughout the course you will find videos that support and reinforce the readings. These videos can be viewed as often as you require. With dial-up connection videos may not run as well or download. High speed connection is recommended for viewing the videos.

Worksheets

Throughout the course you will find Worksheets that evaluate the student’s understanding of the content. Most Worksheets are contained within the units and are graded automatically, but some Worksheets are provided prior to the start of the unit to print. These Worksheets are not transferable to online and should be conducted at home as a practice or you, as the instructor may have the students hand the worksheets in. Worksheets will be graded and added to the student’s total points.

Learning Activities Throughout the course you will find Learning Activities that evaluate the student’s understanding of the content. Most Learning Activities are contained within the units, but some are provided prior to the start of the unit to print. These Learning Activities are not transferable to online and should be conducted at home as a practice or you, as the instructor may have the students hand the Learning Activities in. Learning Activities will not be added to the student’s total points, but they must complete the activity to proceed to the next section.

Page 7: ADTSEA Driver Education Online Training Course

ADTSEA Driver Education Online Training Course 7

Review Questions After each section students will be asked several review questions throughout each unit to test their knowledge of the content. The review questions will not be added to their total points, but they must complete the review question to proceed to the next section. If they get the first review question incorrect, they will have a chance to answer a second question. If they get both questions incorrect they will be redirected back to the beginning of the section and will need to answer at least one question correctly to continue.

Questionnaires In Units 9 and 12 there are questionnaires that the students must complete to determine if they are a distracted driver, drowsy driver or aggressive driver. The questionnaires are not graded, but are totaled for the instructor to see the results.

Short Answer Questions In Unit 9 there are 5 short answer questions and in Unit 10 there are 3 short answer questions that are part of Learning Activities or Worksheets and will need to be manually graded by the instructor to complete final grading.

Submitting the Unit Lesson Once the student has completed a unit, they must submit the lesson so their score for each unit will be added to the grade sheet. After they submit the lesson they will return back to the home page to select and complete the Unit Test. Student’s must spend a certain amount of time in each unit, as discussed previously in “Course Length” and complete the unit with 80% accuracy to continue to the next Unit.

Unit Test At the end of each unit the student must successfully complete the Unit Test, with at least an 80% score to continue to the next unit.

Enrolling in the Online Program as an Instructor

Once you have signed up to use the Driver Education Online Training Course you will be assigned a username and password, which will give you access to the online course and enroll you as an instructor. Once you have access to the course you can view the course and see how the program works. Units 1 – 13 are the units of instruction for the student’s to complete. Units 14 and 15 are for instructor use only and contain step by step instructions for learning how to use the online program. If you want to use the course for your school a new course will be created for you so you can use it for your own personal course. From the website we create for you, you will be able to tailor the course to meet your state’s needs. You can decide the timeframe of the course, the amount of time given to the students to complete a unit or test, the layout, and order of the units to fit your needs. You can add additional content as well and include state specific content, as needed.

As an instructor, you can adjust the time it takes to complete a unit depending on how long you want each student to have access. You can also set the specific date and time in which you want the tests to open and close. At the end of each unit, unit tests will be administered. Tests are scored as the student answers each question. You will be provided with a grade

sheet. If units and unit tests are to be submitted according to a specific date determined by the instructor, the student will need to pay close attention to when units and tests are due.

What the Instructor Can Do With the Course As an instructor you can:

Add or update content Insert images Insert videos Add an activity or resource Develop quizzes Create assignments Schedule a chat Create and post to a forum Develop a survey

You can also import PDF files, Word documents, PowerPoint slides, pictures, images, etc. to enhance your course. Responsibilities of Instructors Instructors must:

Add instructor contact information for students to ask questions and for technical assistance. If you cannot assist the student you are responsible for contacting ADTSEA for assistance.

Insert state specific information in multiple sections in the online program. These include multiple pages in Unit 1, Section 4.5, Section 7.4, Section 8.6, Section 10.7, Section 11.2 and Section 11.3. Any text in red needs to be replaced with your information and the red text can then be deleted.

Determine if you want to set specific dates and times for student’s to complete units and unit tests of if you want student’s to complete the units and unit tests at their own pace. If you want to set specific dates and times you will need to set these for each unit and test.

Track and monitor your students during the completion of the course.
