Mini Office LiftsPeople today are opting to stay away from the traditional fullfacelifts that are performed under general anesthesia in a hospitalsetting. Instead, they opt for less invasive options to address thevolume loss in their cheeks and other factors that cause the faceto sag. Filler injections can only fill depressions and can create vol-ume to the cheek area but require a lot of product to provide a no-ticeable result. Dr. Lee is excited about his temple lift procedure,which he spent many years perfecting. This procedure, in whichDr. Lee lifts the temple tissue and anchors it to the scalp so the in-cision is hidden, is appropriate for patients who want a subtle nat-ural result with the most minimal downtime. The procedure canbe performed in less than an hour in the office, and patients whohave had the procedure are able to drive home themselves andeven go out for dinner the following day without anyone knowingthey had a surgical procedure.

The Internet has provided peo-ple access to all cosmeticprocedures available aroundthe world. This has made

many consumers more educatedbut oftentimes more confused andeven overwhelmed. One thing isapparent: Minimally invasive proce-dures that can be performed in anoffice setting with minimal or no se-dation are becoming more popular.

The following “Cosmetic Proce-dures Guide for Dummies” offersthe perspective of a local facial cos-metic surgeon, John J.W. Lee, M.D.,FACS, who has consciously transi-tioned his traditional hospital-basedsurgical practice to an office-basedsurgical and facial injectables prac-tice. In the process, he has becomeone of the Main Line’s busiest injec-tors of Botox and dermal fillers. Dr.Lee has spent more than a decade

re-inventing surgical techniques foreffective procedures that were tradi-tionally performed in outpatienthospital settings, so now 99 percentof his patients can have all their pro-cedures performed in his office.

Dr. Lee is a Korean-American.Many people are not aware thatSouth Korea is known as the globalplastic surgery capital. Although hewas trained in the United States, Dr.Lee has a unique global perspectiveand is aware of universally effectiveand popular treatments that providepatients consistent and predictableoutcomes with very minimal risks.

Following are treatments andprocedures he finds effective, withhigh patient satisfaction. All treat-ments can be performed in the officewith little or no sedation and, as Dr.Lee states, “provides optimal resultswith minimal or no recovery.”

Filler InjectionsFiller injections replace volume loss duringthe aging process and also can create morefullness to areas such as lips, cheeks, jowls,temples, chin, bridge of the nose and lowerlids/tear trough. Dr. Lee likes to performtreatments using the micro-cannula—afine, blunt needle that allows injections tobe performed more superficially, therebyminimizing the risk of bruising and allow-ing for more correction with a lesseramount of product. He recommends onlyhyaluronic acid-based fillers such as thosefrom the Juvéderm, Voluma, Vollure andRestylane family of products. HA-basedfillers last six to 12 months but can last upto 18 months with multiple syringes in-jected in one area. The price is usuallyaround $500 to $900 per syringe. Usually,the longer-lasting products, such as Volumaand Vollure, are considered the “premium”HA products on the market. Dr. Lee be-lieves that the best course of treatment is aplan that includes gradual application offillers over a one-year period for the mostnatural and optimal outcome.

Eyelids and Brow LiftsEyelids surgery is the most popular facialsurgical procedure due to the impact that itmakes on one’s appearance. Recovery cantake two to three weeks for substantialswelling to subside but can take up to threeto four months to look completely healedif multiple procedures are being performed.Dr. Lee specializes in the field of oculoplas-tic surgery—surgeons who are trained inophthalmology and then finish an oculo-fa-cial plastic surgery fellowship. Dr. Lee hasperformed more than 10,000 eyelids/browlift surgeries and has patients who havetraveled from all over the world to seek hissurgical expertise. As evident in the photoshighlighting Dr. Lee’s work, eyelids proce-dures provide a sense of well-being and re-freshed outlook that people desire whenthey look in the mirror. ■

A Botox injection was used to smoothglabella/forehead lines, lift the brow andslim the jaw line.

The most popular treatment using Botox isto smooth glabella/forehead lines. The re-sult lasts approximately three to fourmonths and usually costs $300 to $500.

Botox/Dysport Botox is the No. 1 cosmetic injection treat-ment in the world. The injection is a five- to10-minute in-office procedure that requiresno downtime. Pricing is usually based onunits injected, and the outcome of the treat-ment is based on the injector’s understand-ing of the facial anatomy and experienceproviding optimal treatments. Pricing forBotox usually ranges from $10 to $15 perunit, and Dysport ranges from $4.50 to $6per unit. Typically a patient needs 2.5 unitsfor Dysport to equal one unit of Botox.

The FDA-recommended dosage is:for the glabella (between the brow), 20units (more for male patients) to relax themuscles that pull down the forehead andcreate deep expression lines between thebrow; for the forehead, 20 units to relaxthe forehead muscles that cause the hor-izontal lines and provide a smoother fore-head appearance; and for the crows’ feet(sides of eyes), 24 units to relax/smooththe laugh lines and also provides a “lift” tothe later brow area.

The term “Botox” is trademarked andmanufactured by Allergan. Dr. Lee advisespatients to be wary of providers whoare not Allergan certified, as a lot of “fake”Botox comes from Korea, China and Mex-ico. These illegal products are not FDA ap-proved for use in the United States. Typically,the effects of real Botox will last three to fourmonths, with an onset of seven days andthe full effects seen 10 to 14 days later.

One to two syringes of filler can create afuller and more feminine appearance. Theeffect will last nine to 12 months.
