ThereareseveralreportsofincidentsofkillingsofwildanimalsvariouspartsofIndia.AfternoticingsuchcasestheGovernmenthastakenvariousactions.Onetigerdeathduetoelectrocutionbypoacherson2-11-2008alsohasbeenreportedbytheStateintheKanhaTigerReserveofMadhyaPradesh.Asinformed,tenoffendershavebeenarrestedinthisregardforpenalactionasperlaw.

IncidentsofkillingofwildanimalshavebeenreportedfromtheState/UTGovernmentsfromtimetotime.Suchkillingofwildanimalsgenerallyoccursduetopoaching,electrocution,poisoning,retaliationagainstman-animalconflict,etc.AspertheinformationreceivedfromtheState/UTGovernments,thedetailsofthemajorflagshipspeciesofwildanimalskilledduringthelastthreeyearsandthecurrentyearisatAnnexure.TheState/UTGovernmentstakeactioninsuchcasesaspertheprovisionsoftheWildlife(Protection)Act,1972.

Fluctuationsinthepopulationofwildanimalsoccurduetovariousnaturalaswellasanthropogenicfactorssuchaslossanddegradationofhabitats,poaching,incorporationofpoisonoussubstancesinthefoodchain,etc.TherearenospecificscientificreportsindicatingthatwildanimalsinIndiaareonthevergeofextinction.However,thereareafewspecieslikeVultures,GreatIndianBustard,etc.whichhavelimitedpopulationstatus.

ThestepstakenbytheGovernmentfortheprotectionofwildlifeandtopreventthekillingofwildanimals,interalia,includethefollowing:

ThreatenedspeciesofwildlifeareincludedintheSchedulesoftheWildlife(Protection),Act,1972,therebyaccordingthemthehighestdegreeofprotection.

TheWildlife(Protection)Act,1972hasbeenamendedfromtimetotimeandmademorestringentagainstwildliferelatedoffences.

AnetworkofProtectedAreashasbeenestablishedtoconservewildlifeandtheirhabitatsincludingrareanimals.

WildlifeCrimeControlBureauhasbeensetuptocheckillegaltradeinwildlifeanditsproducts.

TheState/UTGovernmentshavebeenrequestedtostrengthenthefieldformations

andintensifypatrollinginandaroundwildliferichareas.

FinancialandtechnicalassistanceisextendedtotheState/UTGovernmentsundervariousCentrallySponsoredSchemes,viz,IntegratedDevelopmentofWildlifeHabitats,ProjectTigerandProjectElephantforprovidingbetterprotectionandconationofwildlife.

UndertheCentrallySponsoredSchemeIntegratedDevelopmentofWildlifeHabitats,anewcomponenthasbeenaddedforinitiatingRecoveryProgrammeforcriticallyendangeredspeciesandtheirhabitatsduringthe11thfiveyearplanperiod.
