MEMORANDUM FOR SEE DISTRIBUTION

SUBJECT: Special Warfare: A Selected Bibliography

1. Special warfare, which encompasses unconventional warfare, psychologicaloperations, and counterinsurgency, is undergoing a resurgence of interestwithin the Department of Defense. The desire to have a flexible forcestructure capable of responding to a wide range of threats has led the Armyto create the 1st Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. This new Command encompasses all active duty Special Forces, Ranger, CivilAffairs and Psychological Operations units. An increase in the size ofthis force structure is planned. Similarly, the name of the Army'sdoctrinal and instructional base for these capabilities at Fort Bragg,North Carolina, has been changed from the Institute for Military Assistanceto the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center--an interesting historicalfootnote, for the title "Special Warfare Center" was also used during the

i eriod 1956 to 1969.

2. To assist student researchers in a better understanding of a defensesubject undergoing a serious revival of interest a~d emphasis both withinthe Army and the current Administration, the USAWC Library has developedthis bibliography of literature on special warfare. The bibliographyfocuses primarily on unconventional warfare--to include guerrilla warfare--and counterinsurgency, with emphasis on U. S. experience in these fieldssince the early 1950's. Psychological operations was treated in a separateUSAWC bibliography pub %1ed in February, 1983, copies of which are availablein the USAWC Library. Thi bibliography on special warfare does not pretendto be comprehensive; it reflects only those sources readily available inthe USAWC Library collection. For additional information, please contactthe compiler, Mr. Robert S. Wood, Reference Librarian, Services Branch,U. S. Army War College Library, Autovon 242-3660/Commercial (717) 245-3660.
