2. Questionnaire Survey at WASS 2012 in SingaporeSummary

From 563 attendees at the WASS seminar held on 10th and 11th of May, 155(including 138 from Singaporeans) questionnaire answer sheets were collected. The following show a summary of this questionnaire survey.

1. The fact that almost all the answers were either “excellent” or “good” inresponse to Q6(How do you rate this seminar overall?) shows high appraisalof this seminar by the participants. This is backed by the very low rate (2%) ofneutral response(“fair”), which may have been a bit of a compliment to theorganizer.

2. Many Singaporean participants picked “achievement of productivity” and“shortening of work period” as the answer in response to Q2(What is thelargest benefit of advancing steel structure?). This tendency is prominentamong the design consultants.Since the main objective of this seminar was to promote productivity and

work period shortening by advancing the use of steel structures, while therewas no such information available with regards to this issue, we may well saythat we have succeeded in doing so on a certain level.

12

3. As for Q3(What is the issue to be addressed in advancing steelstructure?), many Singaporeans chose “design knowledge” and“construction technology” together with the somewhat anticipated answer of“cost”; this implies the potential expectation for Japan-origin technology, which can also be affirmed by the responses to Q4(For buildings, what doyou expect from Japanese firms?).4. Interpretation of each query leads to a strong interest in architecturalaesthetics by Singaporeans. Also worth noting is that there were severalcomments on 1) environmental and 2) fireproof aspects of steel, and someinterest in 3) earthquake resistance of steel.5. It is particularly worth noting that there were multiple comments in responseto Q5(Please explain your expectations of Singapore governmentregarding buildings, if any.) from Singaporeans such as ”Construction oficonic steel structures in Singapore.” or “Offer more incentives forprojects using innovative and more productive methods of design andconstruction.”6. There were many who expressed strong expectation for the nextseminar to be held in response to the Q7(free filling questionnaire).

Q 5 Please explain your expectations of Singapore government regarding buildings, if any.

5 design consultant Construction of iconic steel structures in Singapore.

7 design consultant To help promote the use of steel to developers

8 design consultant Bring in high to ultra high steel for more flexibility & variety of design

10 government Singapore government might want to adopt this construction method in it's HDB building projects to kick start the acceptance just like the precastmembers of HDB's projects.

11 government High productivity, lower labour intensive

17 steel fabricator Introduce policies that help reduce steel material cost to facilitate, steel and steel composite as preferred materials for building constructions

20 government BCA pushing for high productivity in construction.

21 government Increase Productive & Efficiency in Building Construction Work

23 design consultant Until developers and the public sector realise that quality construction can be achieved only with investment in construction tech and steelstructures, it is difficult for consultants to push for the proliferation of steel

24 design consultant To be more open minded on new design concept to bring in new technology

26 design consultant More policies on environment-friendly design, in terms of recycle material

29 university /college More seismic and robustness design of buildings

32 government High rise building may be one option to solve dense population issue

34 design consultant Labour law and cost

35 building component supplier Take the lead in acceptance of higher prices for steel building

46 design consultant Think it will only apply to high rise commercial building

48 government Can incorporate the steel technologies in Japan to build tall buildings to increase productivity and floor space due to lesser/smaller column sizes

49 construction industry Balance of cost and technology

50 design consultant More trainings and courses for steel erection and fabrication

60 design consultant Organize study team to address the steel rusting issue in tropical climate

19

61 university /college Facilitate the designers/contractors to adopt in their project. Provide training to increase the productivity. Incorporate the design guide lines andpublish them.

62 steel fabricator I expect Singapore government will help promote the use of structural steel.

67 university /college Currently concrete has been used extensively in Singapore, as steel supply is difficult/expensive, government could encourage the use of steel intheir future construction projects

70 design consultant To actively promote use of steel, training of skilled labour, get FSB [Fire Safety Bureau] to review code of steel fireproofing

72 design consultant Promote steel construction

73 design consultant Offer more incentives for projects using innovative and more productive methods of design and construction.

74 construction industry More incentive to the contractor and developer and consultant

81 construction industry Should be structurally sound and aesthetically nice in harmony with the surrounding

82 developer Cost competitive for a sustainable construction

93 design consultant Provide incentive to developers to adopt steel structures

94 design consultant To facilitate training of skillful welders and fabrication of structural steel works

99 steel fabricator To push for increased productivity and safety

100 steel fabricator Promote steel as preferred construction material in view of environmental agenda

101 other companies Encourage use of innovative materials and technology to enhance safety, reliability and cost effectiveness

103 steel fabricator The type of policy that affect the construction

106 design consultant To get more feedback from construction industry including junior engineer feedback before impliment any new regulation.

123 design consultant Cheap and safe

125 construction industry Encourage more local expertise and engineering staff instead of too relying on foreign industry

130 design consultant Control/imporve on the builder's performance

135 design consultant Simple to construct yet unique

136 design consultant To implement more on steel fabrication, supervision and design codes and regulation

151 design consultant To realize the advance technology in Japan.
