Volunteering with Parks and Recreation can be a fun and rewarding experience for all ages. Each year, volunteers provide thousands of hours of service to parks, programs and community centers and are essential to our success. Volunteers work in a variety of roles including tutoring, coaching and mentoring to youth at community centers; planting flowers and helping with landscaping on park grounds; or assisting with special events such as the Ethnic Enrichment Festival, the Wilderness Run or Party in the Park.

KC Parks has formal partnerships established with neighborhood, community, business and not-for-profit organizations for programs, events and projects. These partnerships allow our department to leverage resources and generate citywide interest and support for our system facilities, programs and events. We appreciate your support! Contact:

dear Friends of Parks and Recreation, Thank you for your confidence and commitment to KC Parks. Your support of our department and our City was confirmed last August by the 63% approval of Question #1. The passage of this sales tax provides KC Parks with a stable funding source and ensures that Kansas City can continue to have one of the best parks and recreation systems in the country. As you glance through this Activities Guide you will notice results from the tax including extended hours in our community centers, ex-panded summer enrichment camps and athletic programs, and enhanced marketing efforts (be sure and check out our new website at www.kcparks.org). As you look around the City this spring, you will see additional flower beds, cleaner and safer playgrounds, increased mowings, and more timely removal of graffiti and litter. KC Parks continues to listen to our residents in order to provide the programs and services that best serve our public. We look forward to seeing you out enjoying our amenities this season and, as always, appreciate your ongoing enthusiasm and support.

sincerely,

The most historic of the five facilities is Swope Memorial built in 1919 and redesigned by renowned architect A.W. Tillinghast in 1934; this demanding layout has hosted major championships including the PGA Kansas City Open in the 1940s and more recently the 2005 USGA Women’s Public Links. In 2001 Shoal Creek Golf Course became the new flagship of Kansas City’s five courses. It is a modern 18-hole layout stretching to 6,983 yards. These two Championship Courses offer the most skilled players exceptional challenges and depict the true beauty and diversity of the Kansas City landscape.

Hodge Park Golf Course in the Northland and Minor Park Golf Course in South KC both offer fun, affordable golf for players of any skill level. Each course is designed to pose a challenge and cater to anyone who plays the game. The holes are shorter to allow a relaxing recreational experience. These family-friendly courses offer a great opportunity to walk and enjoy the health benefits of fresh air and exercise. No matter where you live in Kansas City, these two Regulation Courses provide values that are convenient and give even the newest golfers a place to learn and play the game.

The Heart of America Golf Academy offers the ultimate learning and playing opportunities in the heart of Swope Park. Formerly known as Blue River Golf Academy, this facility is pure fun and recreation. Golf here is for anyone of any age and any skill; the facility is unique offering three different options, a beautiful regulation length 9-Hole Course, a fun par three 9-Hole Course, and a Tom Watson designed Junior Course. Many wonderful community leaders contributed to the development of Heart of America (HOA) as it was conceived to bring golf to the public, no matter a person’s background or experience. Now HOA offers the best Golf Academy and Junior Golf programs in Kansas City, proving that anyone from anywhere can play golf. The Heart of America Golf Academy is a throwback to a bygone era. Golf here is meant to be enjoyed thanks to easy access, affordability and smart design. The clubhouse is also home the The First Tee of Greater Kansas City, an organization that

promotes the game of golf to youth in urban areas.

The five Kansas City golf courses provided by KC Parks offer opportunities for people at any stage of the game – in golf and life! Please visit the KC Golf Hub, www.kcparksgolf.com, or each

course’s individual website for rates and details.

KC Parks’ five municipal golf courses offer diverse playing venues and opportunities to learn and play the game of

golf as well as provide beautiful green spaces throughout the City.

in a negative light. During the 20th Century glimmers of social

change occurred as the media positively transformed the “visual

landscape of America” by opening new windows in the mind and

bringing us face to face with the multicolored possibilities of man

and woman. This exhibition explores compelling and persuasive
