Minutes of Previous Meeting – Rigo moved that the minutes of the previous meeting be accepted.
Seconded Sam – accepted.
Matters Arising from the Minutes
Borrowing trailer for the 2015 Mt Mulligan and Thornborough Cemeteries clean-up. All in order for next year.
Extraordinary General Meeting: to take place prior to the November general meeting. Club members were advised on 30th September that the proposal put forward by Rigo to accept the amended version of the club constitution (circulated to all members) will be voted on. Immediately after the vote the November general meeting will commence.
Dora Pass – Maria had sent an email to Andrew Francis, Manager of Brooklyn Wildlife Sanctuary, apologising for the inclusion of a non-club member traversing Brooklyn property. Rigo read out the email which explained the unexpected and unintended situation and the duty-of-care reasons behind the decision. All agreed that the email was well-worded.

An email had been received from the Harvey Range Quad Bikes group to see if the club would like to become involved in certain activities. All agreed that it would not be feasible but appreciated the offer.
Rosemarie wanted to ensure that the cutlery box from the trailer had been returned. Barry confirmed that it had been returned.
Club Gazebo – Andy had compared various suppliers and would be purchasing the most appropriate one which also has the added advantage that it can be linked to another gazebo if required.
Christmas Party. Details need to be finalised by the next general meeting. Departures from Brooklyn on the Sunday to be at 8am, 10am, 12 noon, 2pm.
Barry
Warren Packham has replaced the club trailer bearings and shackles: the committee expressed their thanks and appreciation of Warren’s time and effort.
Mt Mulligan Station has changed hands and so the club will need to make contact with the new owners to ascertain the camping situation for the 2015 Mt Mulligan and Thornborough Cemeteries clean-up. It was agreed that a letter be sent to the new owners introducing the club and outlining the annual clean-up which has been carried out since 1981.
A suggestion had been made by a visitor that the trip sheet should include an emergency contact for each member and visitor on the trip. All agreed this was a very sensible idea: the trip sheets would be modified to incorporate such numbers.

Malcolm – Nil
Sam – Nil
Chris –
The Kirrema Range Road should be open by late November or early December. Given the participation of the club in the move to re-open the road, Chris suggested that the club contact the organising committee of the ‘re-open the road’ movement to inform them that the club would like to participate in the event. Rigo agreed that it would be good for club members to be present on the day.

MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING Rigo moved that the minutes be accepted as a true record of the
previous meeting. Seconded Maria – accepted.
MATTERS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES None
CORRESPONDENCE Not available so to be covered in the November meeting.
TREASURER’S REPORT In the absence of the Treasurer, the report to be given in the November
meeting.
EDITOR Dennis Alcoe thanked all who had contributed articles and photographs and made a special
mention of an article on burns resulting from camp fires not fully dowsed. The article was not from our
club but relevant to virtually all of our camping trips. Dennis referred to a personal incident and
emphasised the importance of using plenty of water to fully extinguish and cool camp fire embers.
SKILLS & SAFETY In the absence of Andy, nothing to report. Details of the next session already on the
calendar.
ENVIRONMENT OFFICER Nothing to report from Chris Cameron.
TRIPS COORDINATOR Maria Becroft asked members to give a brief report on recent trips. Claire was
thanked for organising the Big Hair Doooo which had been a great success and Roger gave a few details
about some of the star performances.
Roger then spoke about the Dora Pass trip and the generous ‘smoko’ members had received from one
of the leaseholders through whose land they traversed.
Malcolm gave a review of the recent working bee at Brooklyn Wildlife Sanctuary. The only
disappointing feature was that trip leader Barry had to contact many of those who had signed up to
verify numbers, rather than those members notifying him. Given that this was a catered trip, accurate
numbers were important.
Forthcoming trips – as per the calendar in the magazine.
Maria as Trips Coordinator followed up the point of confirming attendance with the trip leader. In
future no confirmation by the Wednesday or latest Thursday before the trip will be interpreted as not
attending and that place will be given to the first person below the cut-off ‘trip full ’line.

GENERAL BUSINESS
Rigo; An Extraordinary General Meeting will be held prior to the start of the November general meeting
to ask for a vote on the updated version of the Club Constitution which has been circulated to all
members. If accepted the updated version will then be submitted to the appropriate government
department for ratification.
Rigo asked if any members would like a new (old style, orange) club shirt – it was presented to Kobe.
Rigo congratulated Roger Millroy and presented him with a certificate in recognition of his nineteen
years of membership of the club.
Malcolm reiterated and supported Maria’s comment on the need to confirm attendance on a trip. Her
suggestion will minimise the frustration felt by trip leaders when they have to refuse members since a
trip is full and then find out by contacting some of the listed members or visitors that they have no
intention of attending. By this time those left out often have made alternative plans or cannot come at
such short notice.
Emma informed the meeting that her family members involved in Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 have
now been formally identified and will be brought home to Australia.
SERGEANT-AT-ARMS Riley Munro fined members for various misdemeanors.
RAFFLE Tristan conducted the raffle: prizes won by Linda White, John Guthrie, Roger Millroy, Emma
Baker, Karen Cutler, Kay Jeffrey. Autobarn $50 voucher won by Lucy Musumeci.
Rigo declared the meeting closed at 8.22pm

Herberton Induction Day September 7th
s visitors, this was our first trip with the 4wd Club. We met the group at Atherton’s Platypus Park.
Barry introduced everyone and then talked to us about the rules of the Club and Safety
requirements. Vehicle inspections came next and then we were ready to go.
We headed off along the road to Herberton. Barry turned into the southern end of the Herberton
Range Ridge Road and started off along the dirt. Everyone followed, keeping an eye out for the vehicle
behind and waiting at each turn until they came into sight. The drive was very pleasant and uneventful
through tall forests and scattered wildflowers.
As we neared the power lines the terrain became more rugged with some spectacular views from the
tops of the ridge. We passed under the power lines for a time and then came a hill climb. Everyone
negotiated this without too much trouble. A little further along the track we arrived at the downhill
slope. Barry stopped us and everyone hopped out to walk the course. We had a choice to either drive
down the hill or go around the headland which was an easier option. Most people decided to give the
downhill drive a go. Barry went first and the rest of us followed one by one. Chris waited mid-way
down the hill to give assistance around some ruts if required and also to take photos.
A
Page 15
Once everyone had
arrived at the bottom
of the hill we drove on.
Lunch was enjoyed by
all when we stopped at
the Walsh River. Here
we sat among the bush
and listened to
someone’s rooster
crowing not very far
away.
Then it was back into
the vehicles and off to
Herberton past some
old mines and signs
warning of unexploded
ammunition. When
Herberton was reached
it was decided to finish the day off and people were free to find their own way home.
Thanks Barry for an interesting drive.

Blue Skies and White Sands, by Trusty Triton October 4th, 5th & 6th
abour Day 4th October, long weekend morning, dawned very inviting for us of the Cairns 4x4 club.
Some of the team couldn’t wait to get started. It was heard from someone “how long do we have
to wait”, the latecomers should not keep us waiting and a bit more mumbling. Five members and three
visitors 4x4’s graced the road from Mareeba to Elim Beach. Ricky Wong and his partner met us at
Hopevale. A total team of 17 people.
Trip leader Lindsay Marriot and Elaine, co-navigator come radio operator, were ready to get the trip to
Elim Beach and Cape Bedford on the road. Trip procedure was handled by our Trippy like a pro. He
assigned Gary and Michele as tail end Charlie. Channel 10 was our radio number. Each vehicle tested
their radio and as we moved on to the road we heard, “All vehicles on the road Lindsay”.
At the Mareeba stop we added a few more vehicles, plus a quick wee pitty-stop. We are on the move.
Next stop Lakeland servo, some refreshments and then “On the Road again” “Silence is golden”.
No one was talking much on the radio. We all had our own thoughts. For Lucy and I, it was our third
attempt to get to Elim Beach. We are now getting closer to Hopevale and to pick up another couple
joining our 4x4 ranks. Yes! We are excited, good weather, good club members and also visitors, who
joined our club trip. We arrived at the turn off to Elim Beach and drove on in. Trippy went to introduce
himself and the rest walked into the yard of the elder who owns the Elim Beach property.
The Elder, Eddie Deemal, is a gentleman and welcomed us with his secretary, who collected the fees,
(well I think he was the secretary?) It was about 1pm and a bit hot. Just good normal Cooktown area
conditions with a steady 15-20kt breeze. We all
selected out camp spots, set up our trailers and an
assortment of car top tents and tents. We broke for
lunch, hence began our weekend at Elim Beach. We
all veged out for the rest of the arvo.
Happy hour, with a permitted fire, went from about
5pm till dark. No holes were to be dug for the fire, as
is, where is. We all went back for tea, with the idea
going back to the fire later. Lu and I were very tired
and we hit the bunks. We woke up in the morning
very refreshed, to beautiful, brilliant, clear blue skies,
and a breezy day. No dust!
Yes we were ready to tackle any drive or track that trip leader
Lindsay organized for all the drivers and the assorted vehicles
that we each owned. Every driver had to deflate the tyres to
at least 18 psi as we found out 20 psi was not low enough for
the soft sand. Lindsay has the right to get us lost? But no!
Trippy did not stray, however we did have to help him where
our GPS’s showed the names of the tracks we were travelling.
We remained a group on this trip to help out our fellow
travelers in whatever way we needed to get through any
difficult sections.

Carl and Anna came to the rescue a few times, it did help. ‘Tis the making of a good trip leader. We
learnt as we went along. This morning we are back where we started, after a wrong turn and a little
sandy bog. Allan with the reed ooops Red Landcruiser, looked elated like a kid with a monster ice
cream, enjoying the drive.
We are driving now on a track heading to Cape
Bedford. We are at times on the beach and times
just off the on the tree line. For some of us it was
the first time beach driving,
Oh yes! The tide was heading out and would
not turn back for at least 5 hours. We had
gone too far? We were not too sure, Lindsay came upon a fisherman, asked him if we could go further
on. No was the answer, we had to back track for about 100 or so metres and we were now surely on
the way to Cape Bedford.
This track was difficult, bendy, soft and sandy plus an assortment of low bushes that just about touched
the other side of the road (not that bad) but excellent for adding vehicle pinstripes the full length and
height of the 4x4. Great for giving side mirrors a good walloping. I forgot to take my trailer mirror
extensions off and succeeded to loosen a mirror which spun off and I lost the bolt.

Beach Driving
Page 19
We get to Cape Bedford and hop out and stretch our legs. Trippy headed off to get as close to Cape
Bedford as possible, and all vehicles bar one went for the short drive. The sun was seriously warming
up, so cold drinks and back into the vehicles we head for home. Still in 4 wheel drive and with deflated
tyres they provided excellent grip through the white sands of the track.
Trippy was a bit concerned about a few steep spots and deeper sides of this track. “Please wait for me
to call each vehicle up!” Lindsay gets through okay, but the next vehicle did not get to the top, two
attempts later and a change of plans.
I asked Keith which gear he used, “I
was in first” I said negative, come
back as far as you can on the hard
surface and this time use 2nd gear.
Also Trippy told him to let his tyres
down. That also helped him up this
part of the track.
He came back to as far as the hard
track ended and took off. He made it
to the top no problem. Keith and his
wife were grinning from ear to ear.
He learnt that 2nd gear did the job.
Now it’s my turn. I have never done
severe sand driving, but have the knowledge of my driver training to help me. I practised what I
preached but got to the very deep dug out powdered sandy stretch and my bash plates were
bulldozing. I knew the second time round I would have to change tactics.
Lindsay signalled to me to drive on the other track, which earlier he thought would be worse than the
first track we were to drive up. We drove up the other track and got through with flying colours. A ride
on a bucking horse wouldn’t hold a candle to the rock and rolling that Lucy and I went through. Even
the stronger vehicles had a few scary moments, all done well. With the worst part of the track over
Trippy is heading home, but not yet over the next hairy spot, there were two spots with a side slip of at
least 30 degrees plus a bit more than that, it could have easily caused a rollover! Everyone got through.
If anyone complained, I didn’t hear.
We got closer to camp and Trippy called on the radio that we were going to see the Coloured Sands
before the tide came in. All agreed. We drove onto the beach, took photos and admired the very
spectacular Colourful Sands scenery. The distance we travelled that day seemed like eternity. It was
careful driving, slow and we had to be on full alert. I tripped the speedo and estimated that the actual
driving the round trip was a distance of 12 kilometres in all, including the beach run to the Coloured
Sands.

Email response from the KRRSG regarding the opening of Kirrama Road.
I sent an email to the KRRSG, they still not sure what date is the opening of the road, just some time in December now. Please read email response below from them. Debbie Gierz

Cairns Four wheel Drive Club Inc.
Please see below the latest media release from the Council. The Council are in the process of trying to set a date. Once we are given that we will let everyone know. We have been working with Wet Tropics, Council and Girringun on the signage, which is now at the printers. A big thank you to Daryl Dickson and Anne Mealing for their input and time working on the signage. Also Ed Healy for his photo's. It is greatly appreciated.
We are still planning to have a night before the opening to show all the historical photos of the road
being built. We would also like to try and get as many of the older generation that worked and lived on
the range to attend. To sit and listen to their stories and to be able to ask questions would be great.
Finally after 8 years We are nearly there. Thanks for your support.
Kirrama Range Road Support Group
Cassowary Coast Council Media Release
9th October 2014
Scenic Kirrama Range Rd soon to reopen after 8 years: Work is progressing to re-open a
scenic tourist route between coastal Kennedy and the southern Tablelands. Cassowary
Coast Regional Council’s Director of Works David Trotter told yesterday’s council
meeting the road was on track to be completed by the end of November or early December
weather-permitting. Kirrama Range Rd has been closed for eight years. Mr Trotter said
crews were busy with drainage and unsealed road sections after recently completing road
re-sheeting work. A road safety audit has also been undertaken and planning is underway
for signs promoting tourist attractions such as Murray Valley Lookout, Tuckers Lookout
and cultural, historical and environmental points of interest.

Brooklyn Working Bee – follow-up recce trip October11th-12th
nly three weeks ago the club had been removing old fence lines at Brooklyn Wildlife Sanctuary
and had successfully opened up and marked a track linking two dams. However, this success was
tempered by our failure to locate another track; despite two hours searching we only covered 500
metres on what we thought was
the track which eventually would
link up a third dam.
It was this sense of being beaten
by a lost track that prompted
Barry to suggest a follow-up
recce trip with just a small group
before the rains obliterated the
progress made so far. Andrew,
Manager of Brooklyn Wildlife Sanctuary, was very supportive as
he had attempted the link up from one direction in his off-road
buggy but had been beaten by the sheer sides of the
Pennyweight Creek. He provided additional maps showing the
route he had taken up to the impassable creek, so it was up to
us to see if we could navigate our way from the opposite
direction and find a way through the creek bed.
Time was a factor right from the start of the weekend. Four vehicles (Barry, Chris, Steve and Mo and Malcolm) left from Caravonica at 6.30am and with no stopping for pies (heresy for some, but we did catch
the balloons over Mareeba) we were
at Brooklyn in time for an early deadline, to pick up the key and then head straight on to Jackson’s Crossing where we had
O
Page 26
camped before. Smoko and airing down the tyres done, we actually found the remnants of a track
which looked more likely than the one Barry and Malcolm had given up three weeks before.
We found ourselves heading for Dora and so “did an Andy”. We turned around and started the foot
work looking for a possible crossing of Pennyweight Creek, keeping in touch via hand-held UHFs. Barry
and Chris went one way and Steve and Malcolm another with Mo monitoring progress on the large
scale topo map, coordinating with Steve who
also had a hand-held GPS. Eventually a
possible entry and exit point was located and
pink ribbons tied to trees to identify the
location and then it was just a question of
getting the vehicles to that point, marking the
route as we went along.
It wasn’t long before we hit one of the dams,
totally dry and cracked. We took a short cut
and drove straight across; in fact by the end of
the weekend we had crossed the dam several
times and yet there was barely a trace of tire
marks in the rock hard mud pan, in contrast to
the drop in and exit points, which looked as if
it was a regular track. Anyone thinking that in
the wet, would have a rude awakening and a
lengthy recovery.
By now we had picked up faint evidence of
Andrew’s buggy as he had approached from
the opposite direction. It was far from
obvious and it was really through using
a combination of maps, Andrew’s
tracks and GPS that we found a
vestigial ‘track’ although that term is
really an exaggeration. Some of the
shrubs were cut back to minimise pin-
stripes but by then all vehicles had
collected stripes galore. The extra few
millimetres width of the two Cruisers
compared to the two Prados could be felt and
heard! Barry decided that the pink ribbon
markers were not sufficient at one stage and
left a rear mud flap for extra identification.
It was mid-afternoon by this stage, so we
Page 27
decided to call it a day, have lunch in an open area and then back track to Jackson’s Crossing to set up
camp and have a swim and the obligatory happy hour, elated that we had found a way through.
On the Sunday we
examined the map and
GPS, optimistic that we
could travel the extra
few kilometres from
Saturday’s turnaround
point to the third dam
without too much
difficulty and then
return by another track
to the homestead. Alas
it was not to be.
Getting back to Saturday’s
lunch and turnaround point
was straightforward but it
became increasingly difficult
after that to locate the track
and after skirting several
hills through high grass we
entered an area of trees and
finding our way through it
was both slow and difficult.
Chris tested the strength of
his steel bulbar by very
gently using it as a bulldozer but it became clear that we were not going to reach the third dam, even
though it could only be a couple of kilometres further.
We had taken over three hours to cover 2 ½ kilometres but once through the trees we could find no
trace whatsoever of the track so reluctantly we decided to head back to Jackson’s Crossing to have
another late lunch, swim, air up the tyres and head home. It was disappointing that we had not
managed to reach the final dam but satisfying that we had completed the missing link which would
prove valuable in the management of the sanctuary and may eventually provide another post-working-
bee drive.
