Welcome to the first ever 2015 SBI/ACR Breast Imaging Symposium!

The Breast Imaging Symposium is a merger of the Society of Breast Imaging’s Postgraduate Course and the

American College of Radiology’s National Conference on Breast Cancer. The meeting, which is the largest breast

imaging conference in the world, consists of a plenary session, panel discussions and focused single topic

refresher courses that cover a wide variety of topics. The course is designed for radiologists, technologists and

medical physicists involved in breast imaging, and hosts an exhibit hall with the latest technology. And for the

first time, attendees will have the opportunity to hear new and original research being presented at one of

several scientific sessions offered throughout the meeting.

Objectives 2015

1 Recognize the importance of mammographic screening, the potential harms of screening, and the assessment of breast cancer risk; particularly as relating to breast density.

2 Identify the appropriate use of breast MRI and MRI-guided biopsy in cancer/disease assessment and management.

3 Describe the current information on the biology of breast cancer from the pathologist and medical oncologist perspectives.

4 Translate research about DBT/Tomosynthesis and contrast enhanced digital mammography and apply those findings to clinical practice.

5 Demonstrate proficiency in a wide variety of breast imaging topics, including biopsy tips and tricks, managing the difficult patient, working in a multidisciplinary environment, challenging cases using ultrasound, MRI and multi-modalities, accreditation, and medical legal issues.

Honorary Fellow: Martin Yaffe, PhD

Martin Yaffe, PhD — Dr. Yaffe received a doctorate in Medical Biophysics from the University of Toronto and is a Professor in the Departments of Medical Biophysics and Medical Imaging at the University of Toronto and a Senior Scientist at the Sunnybrook Research Institute where he holds the Tory Family Chair in Cancer Research in the Imaging Research program. He is Director of the Smarter Imaging Research Program of the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research. With his group of 28 scientists, engineers and graduate students, he conducts research in improving medical imaging as applied to detection, diagnosis and management of breast cancer. He also led the Physics Consulting Group for The Ontario Breast Screening Program from its inception in 1990. His research on

digital mammography helped move this new modality into clinical evaluation and widespread use internationally. He chaired the Interna-tional Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Committee to develop harmonized quality control standards for digital mammography and several other international committees focussing on image quality standards in breast cancer detection. Dr. Yaffe has authored over 230 scientific papers. He is a co-author of the book: Digital Mammography with Dr. Etta Pisano. His current work is directed towards optimization and evaluation of breast tomosynthesis, assessment of image quality, breast density and breast cancer risk, and development of quantitative imaging biomarkers in pathology to inform choices for precision therapy.

Marc Jared Homer received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, New York. He attended New York University School of Medicine and did a mixed Medicine-Pathology internship at the joint New York University and Manhattan VA Medical Center program. He

did his Radiology Residency at Beth Israel Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts and served as Chief Resident during his last year there. He then worked for 1 year at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester Mass. followed by 1 year in private practice, also in Worcester, Massachusetts. He returned to academic practice at Tufts-New England Medical Center where he has been on the staff for 38 years. He is Professor of Radiology at Tufts University School of Medicine and Chief of the Mammography section at Tufts Medical Center.

Dr. Homer was one of the founding members of the Society of Breast Imaging and was its first, and longest serving, President. He held this position for 4 years (1985-1988.) He is a Fellow of the Society of Breast Imaging and in 1995 he became a Fellow of the American College of Radiology. He has lectured extensively throughout the country and for 25 years taught a solo 3 day course in mammographic interpretation 4 times a year at Tufts Medical Center. In 1992 he was the 49th Carman Lecturer. He has delivered other named lectures including the J. Stewart Manchester lecture, the Clayton H. Hale lecture, the Harmon Jordan

lecture, the Gordon J. Culver lecture, the Emanuel J. Levin lecture, the Waldo B. Edwards lecture, the Henry J. Woloshin lecture, and the Robert N. Cooley lecture. He has received a media award from the American Cancer Society, an award for excellence in medical student teaching, as well as an award for Excellence in Professionalism from the Department of Radiology at Tufts Medical Center.

He has authored over 86 peer reviewed articles as well as the textbook “ Mammographic Interpretation: A Practical Approach.” He developed the Homer “J” wire needle localization device. He coined and popularized the “Tattoo Sign” as one of the signs of dermal calcium, and also defined the “Hilar Height Ratio” which was used to recognize hilar displacement on chest x-rays. Another area of his interest regards issues of medical malpractice as it relates to mammography. He is currently a principle investigator evaluating Optical Mammography. He has served as reviewer for several journals including RADIOLOGY, the American Journal of Roentgenology, the New England Journal of Medicine, and Breast Disease. He was made an honorary member of the Nova Scotia Association of Radiologists, the South Central Kansas Radiological Society, the Pacific Northwest Radiological Society, and the Chicago Radiological Society.

Dr. Homer lives in a suburb of Boston with his wife of 41 years, Diane. He has 2 children Ross and Seth.
