Puerto Rico

• Not all Puerto Ricans wanted independence. Some wanted statehood and others wanted self-governance as an American Territory.

• Foraker Act- ended military rule and set up a civil government.

• In 1917, Puerto Ricans were made U.S. citizens.

Cuba• After the Spanish American War Cuba was

under military rule and the same Spanish officials stayed in office.

• Platt Amendment- part of Cuba’s constitution that the U.S. insisted they put in:– No foreign power can control its territory– The U.S. can intervene in Cuba– Cuba cannot go into debt.– The U.S. can buy or lease land for naval or refueling

stations.

• The U.S. would not leave Cuba until Cuba adopted the amendment.

• Cuba became a U.S. protectorate- a country who is partially controlled by a stronger power.

Filipinos Rebel• After the Spanish-American War, Filipinos

believed they would get their independence, but they didn’t.

• Philippine-American War- The same thing that Spain did to the Cubans was done by the U.S. in the Philippines. (Concentration Camps)

• The war lasted 4 years and cost $400 million…20 times more than they paid for the islands.

• After the war the U.S. set up a government similar to Puerto Rico and in 1946, the Philippines became an independent republic.

China

• Open Door Notes- John Hay issued a series of letters to the leaders of nations who had claims in China, that stated they should share their trading rights with the U.S.

• This meant that no country would have a monopoly on trade in China.

• The other nations agreed.
