Passivent SoundScoop is a range of airventilation units which combine exceptionalacoustic attenuation with very low airflowresistance.

This combined performance is superior toany existing comparable unit on the market.

The range comprises of the SoundScoop andSoundScoop iAT (intelligent AirflowTechnology).

The SoundScoop has been developed toattenuate the mid frequency band 500 - 2000Hz as speech and circulation noiseconstitute the main source in commercialand educational buildings.

The SoundScoop iAT incorporates a lowpower consumption 50W sweep fan whichextends the range of the ventilation systemduring conditions when a design strategymay reach its limits of performance.

Acoustic designSoundScoop uses a highly innovativeapproach to acoustic design which allows alarge unobstructed ventilation area. Theopen design is based on selective soundabsorption at key frequencies, and does notrely on baffles or diverters. SoundScoop hasbeen designed in association with Arup in acollaborative approach to acoustic design, natural ventilation performance and productdevelopment.

The acoustic performance of theSoundScoop has been developed through anengineered approach where the exact natureof the source noise and receiver sensitivityhas been considered. As such, each unit istargeted in terms of the sound it attenuates. This means it outperforms any otherequivalent product on the market in terms ofattenuation of speech and footfall.

SoundScoop and natural ventilationNatural ventilation is a key strategy inproviding a healthy environment inbuildings whilst avoiding excessive energyuse. Cross-ventilation or free air transferbetween internal spaces are importantaspects of ventilating the whole building. At the same time most buildings requireacoustic separation between noisy areas andnoise-sensitive areas.

SoundScoop has been specifically designedto meet these conflicting requirements witha large free ventilation area, low airflowresistance and high levels of noise reduction.

ApplicationsSoundScoop provides:

● Air transfer (crossflow ventilation)between internal spaces of buildings aspart of a natural ventilation system.

● Sound reduction between noisy areas andquiet areas, for example betweencirculation spaces and working, meetingor teaching spaces.

● Speech privacy, allowing normalundisturbed speech in adjacent areas.

Examples of use:

● Offices: between open plan offices andmeeting rooms, or between two meetingrooms.

● Education buildings: between circulationspaces and classrooms.

● Hotels: between bedrooms and corridors.

● Health buildings: between patient areasand circulation areas.

SoundScoop can be used to meet theacoustic and ventilation requirements of:

Building Regulations Part F Means ofVentilation, Part L Conservation of fuel andpower, and Part E Resistance to the passageof sound.

BB93 Acoustic design of schools - a designguide.

BS 8233: 1999 Sound insulation and noisereduction for buildings - code of practice.

PERFORMANCE

The performance of the SoundScoop hasbeen achieved through consideration ofthree design features, each of which arenecessary for it to work most effectively. These are summarised below.

1. By positioning the unit out of the planeof source and receiver, sound is forced totake an oblique path through the ventthereby removing the need for bends orsplitters. See illustration on page 3.

2. Optimised cross-sectional dimensionsare used to target attenuation over thedesired range of frequencies. TheSoundScoop is sized so that the ‘cut-on’frequencies, end reflection and amount ofattenuation is optimised for the target 500 - 2000Hz speech range.

3. The patented internal lining whichfeatures ribs at regular centres has beenshown to provide more than 10dB ofsound attenuation in a given octave band. This is achieved by:

- Firstly, there is resistive interferencewhere sound is reflected and partlyabsorbed at frequencies whosewavelengths relate to the period of theribs.

- Secondly, the discontinuities result in non-plane wave motion below the cut-onfrequency. In other words, low frequencysound that would travel unhindered in auniformly lined duct is disturbed by theribs and more readily attenuated.

- Thirdly, the ribs and strips of soundabsorbing material prevent wave motionalong the length of the unit, forcing localreaction between the sound and foamlining. This is known to maximise theattenuation in lined ducts.

Based upon 900mm long, 620mm wide x 320mm high unit

● Low energy consumption 50W fan uses minimum energy when compared to full mechanical systems.

● SoundScoop targets speech and footfall frequencies, the main cause of disturbance via air transfer devices.

● Extends the performance envelope of a ventilation strategy by creatingpositive pressure during peak summer temperatures/conditions.

Two operating modesThe SoundScoop iAT uses one of twooperating modes depending on the needs ofthe building.

Mode 1 NaturalMost of the year

In mid-season temperatures, external freshair enters the room through façade inletssuch as Passivent Aircool Ventilators. The airis mixed at high level and is drawn naturallyout through the SoundScoop iAT exhaustingthrough high level passive stack outlets suchas Passivent Airstract Terminals or atriadesigned into the building.

Mode 2 iAT (intelligent Airflow Technology)Peak summer temperatures or extreme events

During peak summer temperatures, theminimal temperature difference betweenindoors and outside can result in low flowrates for passive stack ventilation, especiallyon still windless days. During these periodsor at other times of unusual events, such ashigh occupancy or unusual heat gain, thebuilding will suffer from raised temperaturesor higher than normal CO2 levels leading toreduced air quality and lethargy for the room occupants. These changes in internalconditions are identified by the PassiventIntelligent Controller which activates the lowenergy fan. The fan generates a change ininternal pressure which maintains theventilation system performance until eitherthe temperature or CO2 levels have achievedthe targeted set point.
