    Scripture – A New Creation

Paul’s letter describes the radical changes brought about by Jesus’ death resulting in a new way of seeing and understanding. By gaining a right relationship with God, believers now look at others differently and walk through life transformed.

This process is seen in the story of the Prodigal Son, where the

dynamics of sin, confession, forgiveness and grace unfold,

transforming the son into a new

    creation.

    Prayer of Reflection

Gracious God, Seeker of the Lost,

Like the Prodigal Son, we have strayed away from You and wasted our inheritance of blessings. Forgive us.

Give us hearts of grace to claim the gifts of love and abundant life.

Like the Elder Brother, we harbor resentment. Reprove us and reconcile us back into the Your arms.

Open our eyes so that we may see others as You see them. Open our hearts so that we may live differently: transformed to live for the benefit of all people and for Your kingdom.

All honor and glory are Yours. Amen.

The Return of the Prodigal Son (detail)

    Rembrandt van Rijn 1669

The Heritage Museum St Petersburg, Russia

The father's face tells of a good-ness: inspiring and noble. His out-stretched hands reveal tenderness and compassion. The whole painting represents a homecoming: of weary and sinful mankind taking refuge in the shelter of God's mercy. This painting has been called one of the greatest in religious art work. Henri Nouwen, the Biblical scholar, writes, “Had I really ever dared to step into the center, kneel down and let myself be held by a forgiving God?”

    Based on Psalm 32

Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

    I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not hide my iniquity;

I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave

the guilt of my sin. Therefore let all who are faithful offer prayer to you; at a time of

distress, the rush of mighty waters shall not reach them.

You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround

me with glad cries of deliverance. Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you

    upright in heart.

    STAR CHOIR

    Psalm 32

This penitential psalm expresses the psalmist’s experience of confessing sin (Heb. pesa: to miss the mark) and receiving forgiveness. Confession must be made honestly and humbly.

God has the ability to set things and persons right, having the characteristics of graciousness and forgiveness. He is a ‘hiding place’ (Heb. seter: cover or shelter.)

    Anthem—How Far Love Goes

“You came down from the heavens so we would know how deep, how high, how long and how wide, and how far love goes.”
