    European Athletics President’s Welcome Message

am very pleased to welcome everyone to the European Athletics U20 Championships here in Grosseto and would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to the Italian athletics federation, Federazione Italiana di Atletica Leggera, for taking on the task of organising this biennial championship again.

It is hard to think of a more picturesque setting for a major athletics meeting than this Tuscany town and the Stadio Olimpico Carlo Zecchini is a magnificent venue for this year’s championship. This competition returns to Italy for the second time in four years after Rieti was the host in 2013 and, as many people know, this is also not the first time that a major age-group athletics event has been held in Grosseto. The 2001 European Athletics U20 Championships and the 2004 IAAF World U20 Championships were staged in this stadium. Athletes and spectators alike still have fond memories of both those championships, which saw the emergence of some outstanding talents who continued to thrill for the following decade and beyond. Champions in 2001 included the likes of Mo Farah and Krisztian Pars, who both went on to win global and European titles in the senior ranks and who are still involved at the very highest level of our sport 16 years later. For this year’s medallists, the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships is probably coming around a little too soon for them to climb the podium again in the German capital next summer but history tells us that a high proportion of those that take the honours here will become familiar faces on the international athletics circuit and make an impact on our sport once their teenage years are behind them. Additionally, the IPC Athletics European Championships was staged in Grosseto last summer and much of the expertise that went into organising that event has been transferred to staging this championship, so I have high hopes that everything will run extremely smoothly in all respects over the four days of competition. European Athletics are very grateful to the Federazione Italiana di Atletica Leggera, the town of Grosseto as well as all the officials and volunteers with the Local Organising Committee for their hard work and commitment to staging this event. I wish everyone an enjoyable and successful weekend and I am sure we will witness several nascent stars of our sport in action here with many competitors going on to further glory in future years.

    LOC President’s Welcome Message

am very pleased that European Athletics has chosen Grosseto once more as the location of the European Athletics U20 Championships. The continental event will

come back to the Tuscan city 16 years after the 2001 edition and four years after Rieti 2013. After the European Athletics U20 Championships in 2001, the main city of the Maremma region also hosted the World U20 Championships in 2004, two events of high profile and great success that have made Grosseto one of the best Italian cities for the organisation of international sporting events. From 20 to 23 July, the Zecchini Stadium in Grosseto will be

the venue of the 24th edition of the European Athletics U20 Championships. More than 1200 athletes from all over Europe will compete for the 44 titles. Their wonderful enthusiasm will be the incentive to make their sport dreams come true. This constant organisation of events is a guarantee of growth in all fields. I would like to acknowledge the institutions, always close to sport, the work being carried out to renovate the facilities but above all - the increase in the number of athletes, judges and coaches in the area. Passion becomes contagious in these cases. It is a tradition that is renewed, but also a new opportunity to promote the territory and give impetus to the Italian sporting world. I would like to thank European Athletics for its repeated esteem, the organising committee, the press, the institutions and the partners supporting the event. I wish the young athletes an unforgettable experience.
