Recently Completed Event: Helicopter Safety In and Around them. 25 Aug - 2018 John Sibole, Program Manager, FSDO, HBG, facilitated our 5th FAASTeam Safety Seminar on Sat. 25 Aug. Sixteen pilots participated in the program. Than you John!

This month in Aviation History…..

September 24, 1929......Lt. James H. Doolittle makes first blind, all-instrument flight at Mitchell

Field flying in a Consolidated NY-2 (Husky). He later received the Harmon Trophy for conducting

the experiments.

September 10, 1932…..Major James H. Doolittle sets new world speed record averaging 294 mph

over a 3 km course in an event named the Shell Speed Dash.

September 27, 1993…..James “Jimmy” Doolittle died at the age of 96 and is buried in Arlington

National Cemetery next to his wife “Jo” Josephine Doolittle who passed away five years before

her husband.

To learn about the incredible life and times of one of the most fascinating aviators in history,

Jimmy Doolittle, get a copy of the book “Calculated Risk”, written by his granddaughter, Jonna

Doolittle Hoppes.

If you’re like most folks, you probably wondered many times throughout your early school

years…”When am I ever going to need to know this stuff?” You know, stuff like algebra,

trigonometry, calculus…and if you were lucky…advanced calc!!! Some of you may have even had

those same thoughts long before high school when the teacher would lead the class in reciting

the ABC’s. But if you are a pilot you learned very early in your training why they are so important

for just about everything and anything that has to do with flying has an abbreviation or acronym

associated with it. So, aren’t you glad you paid attention and learned your ABC’s? Think about

it, airspace designation is the best example. You’ve got Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D and Class

E. Oh, and let’s not forget the all-important phonetic alphabet, you know A – Alpha to Z – Zulu.

Here’s one that trips up a lot of pilots: Q.

By far, aviation has more shortcuts to identify “stuff” than anything else you can probably think

of. Stuff like navigation, communication, weather, maneuvers, aircraft, airports, ratings, where

you can fly and where you can’t…well, you know or should know all about such “stuff” by now.

The real problem is trying to remember all of them. It’s like trying to remember all the important

dates in history. Unless you use them on a regular basis, it’s easy to forget or confuse some of

them. Here, try these for example, MB and mb or how about FA and FD. Do you know what

these abbreviations mean? Did you ever? No…well, look them up!

Hey, let’s have some fun…. or frustration. Let’s see how many of the 20 abbreviations or

acronyms listed below you can identify. Simply match the number to the correct letter. And

give yourself a pat on the back if you also know their meaning.

Look for the answers on page _16_.......NO PEEKING!!!
