Students coming to Adelaide for the rsttime are encouraged to consider livingin a managed student accommodationenvironment in their rst year.Choosing to live in managed student

When renting a house or apartment the costwill depend on factors such as location, qualityand size, and whether it is furnished or not. Most houses and apartments areunfurnished so you may need to buy or rentfurniture and other household items.Initial set up expenses can be high, as it isnecessary to pay a minimum of two weeksrent in advance and a security deposit equalto a maximum of six weeks rent (alwaysobtain a receipt for these payments) whensecuring the property.Fees for the connection of utilities to theproperty may also be required to establishthe supply of electricity, water, gas andtelephone and internet services.Students are advised not to secureaccommodation in the private rental marketwithout having had the opportunity toinspect the property rst. Most property owners require a 12-monthlease. Signing a lease imposes certainresponsibilities so you need to ensure youunderstand these obligations. Infringementscould lead to legal proceedings and expense.Sharing a rented house or apartment withother people is generally the most economicaland exible form of renting.

Share accommodation refers to theavailability of a bedroom in an establishedhouse or apartment where the head tenanthas already furnished the property andconnected the utility services.

The weekly rent for share accommodationusually includes an agreed contribution to allof the utility services supplied to the property.Students are advised not to secure shareaccommodation without having had theopportunity to inspect the property, sign anagreement of some description.Whilst there are a number of high prolewebsites offering share accommodationlistings that encourage informalagreement terms, inevitably many of thesearrangements lead to misunderstanding anduncomfortable living environments causingdistraction to academic progress.

The Student Accommodation Serviceis available to students to advocate andprovide support if students nd themselvesin difcult accommodation environments.

The rental database, which is updateddaily and free of charge, is considered thebest resource for University of Adelaidestudents to nd private rental and shareaccommodation but it can only be accessed

by enrolled students of the University whohave been issued with a user name andpassword for the University intranet.
