Academic ProfileThe Academy is a highly focused program for students with a stronginterest and aptitude in mathematics, science and technology. Itschallenging curriculum and requirements extend beyond theclassroom. Academy students demonstrate their commitment toacademic excellence by participating in a wide array of science fairs,competitions, symposia, and conferences that range from local tointernational arenas. Their numerous awards reflect not only theirsolid technical understanding but also their ability to apply theirknowledge and creativity to solve challenging problems.

The recent Class of 2020 had 23 National Merit Finalists and 20National Merit Commended students. More than 95% of graduatestake five or more AP tests and earn the rank of AP Scholars withDistinction, AP Scholars with Honor, and AP Scholars.

Programs Students in the Academy exceed the requirements for theFoundation High School Program. Due to the fact that all of ourstudents take Algebra II, earn at least one endorsement, andcomplete the Foundation High School Program, they are eligible toearn the Distinguished Level of Achievement. Depending on thenumber of years of a foreign language a student takes, our studentsare eligible to earn endorsements in STEM, Arts and Humanities, andMultidisciplinary Studies.

A Tradition of ExcellenceFor more than three decades, the Conroe ISD community has made a commitment to improve theway science is taught and learned. The magnet program known as the Academy of Science andTechnology is one part of this commitment. Focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, andMathematics (STEM), the Academy is uniquely positioned to offer interested and talented studentsa rigorous program that prepares them to be socially responsible citizens who will make majorcontributions to the world in which we live.

Academy Learning CommunityAcademy StudentsAcademy students are the focus of our ethical learningcommunity. They are committed to working longer andharder than their peers. They support each other andwork collaboratively as well as individually. Theyparticipate in weekend, vacation, and summer activities,engage in academic competitions, and spend time inthe summer involved in internships and enrichmentcourses.

Academy TeachersAcademy teachers are a group of dedicatedprofessionals who are creative in their teachingstrategies, open in their communications, innovative intheir methods of instruction, and remarkable in theirprofessional involvement. They develop strongrelationships with their students and become partnerswith them to develop understanding, define success,and be successful.

Academy Parents

Academy studentsmust complete the following:• Academy Science core:

a. SRD and Biology H (9th) , Chemistry H (10th), AP PhysicsI (11)

b. AP Chemistry, AP Physics C, or AP Biology • Academy Math core

Four years of math to include Geometry pap, Algebra II H,Dual Credit Pre-calculus, Calculus AB or BC, and APStatistics.Multivariable calculus is an option.

• Technology corea. AP Comp Sci Principals or CS H in 10th gradeb. A second course selected from: AP Computer Science,

Digital Art and Animation, Electronics and Robotics,Technology Applications Independent Study, or otherapproved course

• Specialization coreAt least one additional advanced course: AP Chemistry, APPhysics C, AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, OrganicChemistry (H), Anatomy & Physiology (H), or otherapproved course.

• Career Path EmphasisAcademy students are asked to declare a career pathemphasis: engineering, medicine, biotechnology, etc andto select courses consistent with that emphasis in 11th and12th grades.

• Career requirementStudents must earn 14.0 credits in Explorations in Scienceand Technology by the end of 10th grade.

Students must complete an 80-hour internship once theExploration credit requirement is met. Internship must becompleted by December in senior year.

• Yearly Independent ProjectStudents take SRD in the freshman year and submit ascience project to satisfy the Research and Problemscomponent. In subsequent years students select a projectand earn credit in Research and Problems I, II, and then III.Options include Science Fair, Destination Imagination,Engineering Design Competition, Envirothon, BESTRobotics, FIRST Robotics, Quiz Bowl, and Science Bowl.

• Enrollment ComponentStudents must be enrolled in at least three Academyclasses each year for four years.

• Senior ComponentStudents must be in good standing and meet allrequirements.

AdmissionStudents apply for admission to the program in the fall of theireighth grade year. The Academy of Science and Technology is opento students who attend or zoned to attend Knox, Irons, McCullough,or York junior high schools. Please refer to the Application,Selection, and Transfer Policies on our website for eligibility. TheApplication Process for the Class of 2024 is on our website. Pleasereview for dates for Academy Information Nights, visits to the juniorhigh schools, testing, and due date of application. The Applicationfor Admission to the Class of 2024 will be on the website in early fall.

Parent InvolvementParents of the Academy of Science and Technology (P.A.S.T.)support the program in many ways. From publishing the SchoolDirectory, to coordinating and sponsoring Explorations, providingmentoring, funding purchase of equipment to hosting manymeetings and events, P.A.S.T. organizes and provides support forthe Academy that extend beyond the school’s ability. Theinvolvement of the parents is a major contributor to the success ofthe program.

Academy MissionThe Mission of the Academy of Science & Technology is to prepare students having a strong interest in mathematics, the sciences, andtechnology for success in college and life. We will provide a challenging and innovative program designed to develop studentresponsibility, motivation, and commitment to learning within an ethical learning community emphasizing trust and cooperation.

Why Choose the Academy?

What really interests you?• Do you ask a lot of questions and wonder why things

happen?• Are you fascinated with living things and how they grow?• Do you take pleasure in building things or finding out how they work?• Do you enjoy doing puzzles and math challenges?• Do you use the computer for more than playing games?

Do you understand how importantyour education is to your future?• Are you willing to work hard in high school?• Do you appreciate extra attention from your teachers?• Do you do more than is necessary so you’ll understand?• Do you enjoy academic competitions, like Science Fair?• Would you benefit from working with other students who share your

interests and commitment?

challenges you want to help solve? • Do you picture yourself working with people, or computers, or complex

equipment?

If you answered yes to many of these questions,then the Academy might be for you.The Academy isn’t for everyone, however. There are good programs andteachers at every Conroe ISD high school. The Academy’s special atmosphere,high expectations, and personal environment may not be what you want orneed. But, if you think you would be challenged and do well in the Academy,you are encouraged to apply.

Application ProcessDetailed application information is made available in the Fall of each school yearby means of school visits and open house informational meetings. Selection iscompleted by mid-February. Ninth-grade students must have completed algebrato enter the Academy.
