INTRODUCTION
THEFOURINTERSECTINGTHEMESTheAcademicStrategicPlanrestsonfourintersectingthemes.Withtheactionphaseinfullswing,theoverlapofthesethefourthemeshasclearlyemerged.Forexample,manyofthefundedTIPssupportground-breakinginnovationsinhealthcareandadvancedigitallearningopportunitieswhilecreatingcutting-edgeimmersionexperiencesforourstudents.
Intotal,morethan650faculty,staffandstudentshavebeendirectlyengagedinbringingtheplantolife.Thereach,however,extendswellbeyondthoseindividuals.ThefundsawardedtotheChancellorFacultyFellowsallowthemtopursuenewandexcitingdiscoveries.Grantssupportingneweducationtechnologieswilladvancelearninginallcornersofthecampus.TherecentlylaunchedUniversityCourseswillofferourstudentsopportunitiestolearnfromcollaborativeteamsofdiversefaculty.
Insum,theinitiativesoftheASPareactivelyenablingfaculty,studentsandstafftotackletoday’smostpressingquestionsandallowingVanderbilttoreachnewheightsinadvancingdiscovery,learningandservice.

TIPSIMPACT–THE2015AWARDEDPROGRAMSFullProgramDescriptions“Yearone”progressreportsforthe2015recipientsrevealanexcitingandproductiveinauguralyearfortheprogram.Collaboratorsfromadiversesetofdisciplinesareworkingtogethertomaketransformativediscoveries,engagingstudentsalongtheway.Insomecases,theworkisleadingtopapers,invitedtalks,patentapplicationsandindustrysupportandcollaboration.Anumberofstrongapplicationsforexternalfundingarelikelytoresultfromtheseinvestments.Belowaresomeprogramhighlights:
• EthicsofHealthandHumanFlourishing:CommunitiesofCareandEverydayEthicsTheteamestablishedaninterdisciplinarycommunityofscholarsfortheFacultyWorkingGroupanddevelopedatwo-semestercoursethatdeeplyengagesstudentsinthescholarshipandpracticeoftheethicsofcare.A'MeettheProfessors'eventfortheirsequenceofcourseswasheldthisspring,wheretheyengagedstudentsinanobservationexercisecomparingclipsthathighlightedtheconnectionsbetweenempiricalinvestigationandethicalreflection,makingthecasethatstudentfieldworkandqualitativedataanalysiscanmakeanimportantcontributiontonormativecaretheory.15studentswereofferedaplaceinthecourseandtheyhaveawaitinglist.
• TheLaboratoriesforInnovationinGlobalHealthTechnologiesAfieldresearchteamofstaffresearchscientists,faculty,postdoctoralfellowsandgraduatestudentstraveledtoZambiaandoperatedatMachaResearchTrustforsixweekstoevaluatetheversion1.0ofthemagneticallyenabledBiomarkerExtractionandDeliverySystem(mBEADS)device.Thefieldtripandon-campusworkresultedinthreeundergraduateimmersions,engagementof37undergraduate/graduatestudents,andalsosupportedeffortstowardpatentapplicationsandexternalgrantsubmissionstoNIH,GatesFoundation,USAID,andtheProgramforAppropriateTechnologiesinHealth.
• WisdomWorkingGroupTheWisdomWorkingGroup(WWG)immersed18Discovery&Learning(D&L),Fellowseightundergraduatesand10graduatesfromacrosstendisciplinesinhands-onresearchwithfaculty,communityexpertsandprofessionalstaff.Facultycollaboratorsfromacrossnineuniversitydepartmentsworkeddirectlywiththefellowstoadvanceinnovativecross-disciplinaryandcross-sectoralresearch.Yearonewasaresearchand

planningyearforWWGssixcoreprojects.D&LFellowsandfacultyworkedtogethertoconductbackgroundresearchforeachprojectelement,formulatingdetailedworkplanswithspecificgoals,objectives,andactivities.Theresultsincludedliteraturereviews,trainingsessionsandmaterials,focalthemeidentification(frominterviewcoding)aswellasrelationshipbuildingwithpartnersincurrentandnextphasesites.Studentswereimmersedinqualitativeresearchanddataanalysis,presentations,trainings,campusandcommunityevents,healthcaresolutionsdevelopment,technology/digitallearninginnovation,andmentoringwhichwillresultininnovativeapproachestoseekingsuccessfulsolutionstoproblemsfacingourworldinitslocal,nationalandinternationaldimensions.
• ATrans-InstitutionalBigDataInfrastructureatVanderbiltAtestBigDataclusterenvironmentusingninerecycledserverswassetup.TheclusterwasleveragedbyProfessorDanFabbri'sCS3892BigDatacourseinwhich50undergraduateandgraduatestudentslearnedhowtodevelopMapReduceandSparkanalysisprograms.StudentstakingtheBigDatacoursecompletedseveralstructuredtasksusinglargedatasets:analyzingmillionsofsocialmediapoststoidentifytrendingtopics,analyzingWikipedia,andbuildingaGoogle-likesearchengine.Insum,theprojectledto40robuststudentimmersionexperiences,40undergraduatesand10graduatestudentsintheBigDatacourse,andsixundergraduatesenrolledinACCREScholarssummerprogram.
TIPSPROMOTIONANDRECOGNITIONTobetterpromotetheeffortsofTIPsparticipantsandtheirdiscoveries,apromotionalwebpageisbeingdevelopedthatwillhavededicatedprofilepagesforeachTIP.Oncecomplete,astrategywillbedevelopedtomobilizethecontentinhopesofelevatingawarenessandincreasinginternalandexternalrecognitionfortheseimportantprojectsthatareaddressingsomeofsociety’smostpressingchallenges.

Feedbackfromthefellowsrevealedthattheprogramhasbeensuccessfulatachievingtheprogram’scoregoal–helpingnewlytenuredfacultymaintainandgainmomentumintheircareers.Someofthefundshelpedfacultystartnewprojectsorventureintoareastheyotherwisewouldnothavebeenabletoexplore.Somefacultyusedthefundstodoacoursebuy-outandfinishasecondorthirdbookthatotherwisewouldhaveprogressedmuchslower.Otherhighlightsinclude:
- SeanSeymorehostedaresearchconferenceentitled“TheDisclosureFunctionofthePatentSystem.”HealsoorganizedthefirstAnnualPatentScholarsRoundtable.Heisworkingonpatentresearchforafuturebookregardingpatents.
- KristopherPreacherfundedthreevisitingscholarstogivepresentationswithinhisdepartment,providedsummersupportforagraduatestudent,andtraveledforresearch-relatedconferences.

- MuktarAliyuusedhisfundstopresenthisresearchworkattheConferenceonRetrovirusesandOpportunisticInfections(CROI)inBostonandalsohelpedtobridgeresearchcostsforhisR101studyendinglaterthisyear.
- SharonWeissusedfundsforanewprojectrelatedtoenergystorageandtraveledwithhergraduatestudentstoapremierconferenceinSpain(wheretheywereawardedBestTalkoftheDayawardsandoneBestPosteroftheDayaward).
- BunmiOlatunjiusedfundstoinitiateaneuroimagingstudyexaminingthespecificityofthebrainbasisofdisgustlearningandextinctioninobsessive-compulsivedisorder.
THE2016COHORTListofFellows
ProgramingforthesecondcohortwaslaunchedinMay2016withadinnerhostedbytheProvost.Theprogrammingforbothcohortswillbemodifiedinitssecondyeartokeeptheinitiativerenewedandengaginginresponsetofeedbackfromthefirst-yearfellows.Thegoalistomakesurethecohortsaregettingthemostoutoftheprogramwhileensuringthatweareusingtheirtimeineffectiveways.
Ineffortstoelevateprestigeandprovideplatformstoshowcasethefellows’work,thefollowingpromotionalopportunitieswillbepursuedinyeartwo:

THEMARTHARIVERSINGRAMCOMMONSAnationallyrecognizedmodelforfirst-yearresidencelife,in2015-16,TheCommonsimplementedanumberofmajorinitiativesinordertocontinueenhancingthefirst-yearexperience,makingVanderbilt’scampusamorediverse,equitable,andinclusiveenvironment.Theseinclude:
• IncreasedtrainingondiversityandinclusionforVUceptors-BeingawareoftheimportanceofthiscomponentofVUceptortraining,threeadditionalmoduleswereimplementedinsummer2016totrainstudentandfacultyVUceptorsonculturalcompetency.
• VanderbiltVisionscurriculumredesign-Infall2016,first-yearstudentswillbenefitfromanumberofenhancementstotheVanderbiltVisionscurriculum,includingafocusonprofessionaldevelopmentskillsandpersonalhealthandwellbeing.
• AdditionstoCommonVU-Infall2016,parentswillhavetheopportunitytoattendanewparentandfamilyorientationprogram.

InOctober2015,TheCommonsstaffpresentedattheResidentialCollegeSymposiuminDallas,Texas.GiventhecontinuedexpansionoftheCollegeHalls,Commonsstaffhelpedsharetheirexperiencesandunderstandingsofthelatestresearchandbestpractices.Tothatend,VanderbiltwasselectedamongourpeerstohosttheannualResidentialCollegeSymposiumin2016.
WARRENANDMOORECOLLEGESRecognizingthatreturningstudentsinWarrenandMoorehavethecapacityandenthusiasmtohelpcreatethecommunityinwhichtheybelong,programmingisdesignedtoleadtoself-directedexplorationandfacultyinteraction.Thefollowingarejustseveralofthe250programsthattookplaceatWarrenandMooreinthepastacademicyear:
• Apresidentialdebateseriesthroughouttheyeargatheredstudentsandfacultymembersforscreeningsorfacilitatedconversations.
• “LockedandLoaded:TheSecondAmendmentinthe21stCentury”featuredapaneloffacultymembersfromlaw,politicalscience,philosophyandsociology.
• Thestudent-led“HotTopics”seriesexplorespressingsocietalissuesandwelcomesothercampusgroupsandleaderstotheColleges.
• TheWarrenShowcaseSeriesplacesstudentexpertise,experienceandexpressionfrontandcenter.TheinauguraleventwasapresentationbyanArtsandSciencestudentonhersummerinternshipinPeru.
• Apanelfeaturingstudentswhohadcompletedinternshipsprovidedinformationonhowtofindthemandhowtomakethemostoftheinternshipexperience.
THEFUTUREOFVANDERBILTANDBARNARDHALLSInacademicyear2015-16,fourpresentationswereheldacrosscampustogatherstudentfeedbackontheundergraduateresidentiallivingexperienceandtoshowcasetheproposedarchitecturalplansforthereplacementofVanderbiltandBarnardHalls.Themostfrequentcommentreceivedwas“Wow!”Studentswerewarmlyenthusiasticaboutthearchitecturalplans.Takingstudentcommentsintoconsideration,particularattentionisbeinggiventotheneedsofstudentartsorganizationsinthenewdesign.Floorplansincludetwodancestudiopracticespacesinthebasementandasmallpubliclyaccessibleartgalleryonthefirstfloorthatcanhoststudentorclassprojects.ConstructionbeganonthereplacementforVanderbiltandBarnardHallsinMay2016.Thenewresidencehallisexpectedtoopenforoccupancyinthesummerof2018.

InApril2015,theCEECHtaskforce(chargedwithdevelopingprogrammingproposalsforco-curricularfacultyandgraduate/professionalstudentinvolvementinresidenciesexternaltothecollegehalls)issuedareportwithseveralproposalstoincreasestudentengagementandenhanceundergraduateresidencelife.

DIGITALHUMANITIESVanderbiltUniversityreceiveda$1.5milliongrantfromtheAndrewW.MellonFoundationtoestablishanewCenterforDigitalHumanities.Thetrans-institutionalinitiativewillfurtherVanderbilt’scommitmenttobecominganationalhubofinnovativedigitalhumanitiesscholarship.Faculty,graduatestudentsandpostdoctoralfellowswillhavefundingopportunitiesthroughnewcompetitiveMellonFellowshipsintheDigitalHumanities.ThecenteralsowillhostanewjointdegreePh.D.programandacreativemedialab.ThePh.D.program,ComparativeMediaAnalysisandPractice,willadvancethecriticalinvestigationofmodernmediacultureandtheinnovativedesignofmediaobjects.Thelabwillfeatureopenspaceforresearching,teaching,meetingandtinkeringandserveasahubforfacultyandstudentsinterestedintheintersectionsofart,technology,scienceandculture.Thecenter,settoopeninButtrickHallinfall2016,alsowillhostconferences,workshops,lecturesanddemonstrations.
LOOKINGTOTHEFUTUREAcademicyear2015-16providedtheopportunitytostrategicallyplanforfutureinnovationineducationtechnologies,including:
• CourseManagementSystem(CMS)Assessment-TheUniversity’scoursemanagementsystemisacriticalelementofthefacilitationofteachingandlearningbyintegratedtechnology.ACMSneedsassessmentisunderwaythatsolicitsbroadinputfromacrossthecampusanddevelopsaclearvisionforCMSuseatVanderbilt.Theneedsassessmenthasincludedopenforums,pilotcourseofferings,andwrittenandoralfeedbackfromfaculty,students,andstaff.Theneedsassessmentwillinformthepotentialadoptionofanewcoursemanagementsysteminsummer2017.
• Ed-TechPodcasts-WorkhasbeguntorecordeducationaltechnologypodcastsinpreparationtolaunchapodcastseriesinAY16-17thatfocusesondigitallearningoncampusandbeyond.PodcastswillfeaturetheCenterforTeaching,theJeanandAlexanderHeardLibrary,andtheVIDL,amongothercampusexperts.
• OnlineRevenueGeneratingPrograms-Owen’sManagementFundamentalscourseiscurrentlyinproductiontobelaunchedinthefallonCoursera.Itisexpectedthat500studentswillenrollinthefirstiteration,withincreasedenrollment(andrevenue)eachyearoverthecourseofthreeyears.

HEALTHCARESOLUTIONSOverthecourseof2015-16,healthcarecliniciansandresearchersacrosstheuniversityandthemedicalcenterwereprimarilyfocusedonplanningthefinancialandlegalseparationofVanderbiltUniversityandVanderbiltUniversityMedicalCenter(VUMC).LeadershipusedtheASPasthephilosophicalinspirationtoguidethedevelopmentoftheAcademicAffiliationAgreementsandnumerousMOUsthatgovernoperationspostseparation.Theover-archinggoalwastoensurecollaborationscontinuetoflourishpost-transition.
In2015-16,theTIPSawardsprogramservedasaprimarymechanismforsupportinghealthcarerelatedcollaborations.Inaddition,theUniversityCourse,“TheNation’sHealth:FromPolicytoPractice”servedtoadvancethetrans-institutionallearningapproachtohealthcaresolutions.
Lastly,anumberoffacultyandadministratorsmettoconsidernewjointdegrees,graduatecertificatesandothereducationalprogramsrelatedtothehealthcaresolutionsinitiativesthatwoulddrawonfacultyfrommultipleschools.TheMedicalInnovatorsDevelopmentProgram,anewfour-yearPhDtoMDtrainingprogram,waslaunched.TheprogramistailoredtoengineersandappliedscientistswithexistingPhDdegreestofillanunmetneedforappliedphysician-scientistswhocansolveclinicalproblemsbytranslatingdiscoveriesina)imaging;b)informaticsandsystemsdesign;and/orc)medicaldevicesintovaluableinnovationthatwillimprovethelivesofourpatients.
GRADUATEEDUCATIONTheASPrecognizestheimportanceofmakingcriticalimprovementsingraduateeducationatVanderbiltinordertoremaincompetitive,attractthebeststudentsandsupportthemwhiletheyareheretopreparethemforvariedcareersinadynamicallychangingmarket.Effortsunderthefourthemessupportthosegoals,inadditiontoafocusedeffortundertakenwiththelaunchoftheGraduateEducationStudyGroup.

WHAT’SNEXT?TheActionphasewillcontinueasprogramslikeTIPsandtheChancellorFacultyFellowspreparetoenterintothe3rdawardcycle,andthenutsandboltsofimmersionwillbeoutlinedandvettedbythecommunityinanticipationofafall2018launch.Workwillcontinueonbuildingoutthecollegehallsandbringingco-curricularengagementtoallresidencesoncampus.Theuniversity’smajoronlineportals,administrativeandeducationtoolswillcontinuetobereviewedandenhanced.AndwiththeVU/VUMCtransitionfinalized,arenewedfocuswillbeplacedonadvancingthejointMD/PHDprogramsandothereffortsrelatedtothehealthcaresolutionsfocusarea.
ASPleadershipwillalsolaunchtheImpactphasethisyear,torunconcurrentwiththeactionphase.Manyprogramsareinfullswingandrequiremorein-depthanalysistoidentifysuccessesandopportunitiesforrefinementandimprovement.Aswemoveintothisconcurrentphase,a

seriesofstorieswillbereleasedinthefalltoshowcasetheimpactsofinvestmentsmadetodateandtopreviewwhatliesahead.
SignificantprogresshasbeenmadetodateinimplementingtheAcademicStrategicPlan.Allacrosscampus,thedecisionsandinvestmentsmadecanbeseencomingtolife.Itisclearthattrans-institutionalismandtheothercorepremisesoftheplanarefurtherinfluencingtheVanderbiltcultureaswecollectivelyseektoenhancetheeducationexperienceforstudentsandadvancediscoveriesthathaveapositiveimpactontheworld“inservicetohumanity.”
