52 Articles in52 Weeks: LandmarkEM Articles

    2013

To provide a resource for evidence-based

Emergency Medical education, this list of

    must-read landmark articles was createdto

    supplement the Emergency Medicine (EM)

internship year of training. There are 52

articles so that one article can be read at

leisure each week of the year. I searched

national databases and polled faculty at the

University of Washington to identify articles that faculty would expectany EM resident to be familiar with or that they felt were practice-

changing in EM. Articles were selected for the final list based on the

quality of study design, sample size, and relevance for EM residents.

    Emily:

Thanks for compiling a list of ground breaking articles. Did you

know about the Best Evidence in Emergency Medicine (BEEM)

    www.BEEMSite.com

BEEM has the only validated audience rating tool in emergency

medicine continuing medical education. Worster et al.

    Consensus Conference Follow-up: Inter-rater Reliability

Assessment of the Best Evidence in Emergency Medicine

(BEEM) Rater Scale, a Medical Literature Rating Tool for

Emergency Physicians. Acad Emerg Med Nov 2011.

The BEEM rater score, to the best of our knowledge, is the only

known measure of clinical relevance. It has a high interrater

reliability and face validity and correlates with future citations.

Carpenter et al. Best Evidence in Emergency Medicine (BEEM)Rater Scores Correlate With Publications Future Citations. Acad

    Emerg Med Oct 2013.

Go to http://thesgem.com/beem/to find out more.

I am going to look through our database from 2005-2013 to see

how many papers we have both covered.

Good job, big effort, keep up the good work.

    Emily,

Thanks to you and your colleagues for putting together this list. I

know it was hard to pare it down to just 52. Hopefully, someone

will continue this list and update it when new landmark articles

    are published. Great job.

    Dr Astin,

Thanks for your post. It was hard to pare it down to 52!

I'm planning on maintaining this list for the next several

years to keep it up to date and reflective of new literature,

and then setting up a sustainable way for the list to be

maintained by other UW residents. Thanks for the nice

    comments,
