InstructionsStudents will view the slides as if they
were actually doing the lab in class.Students will record their answers down
in the geosphere packets pages 9-12.There are two parts to this lab
Question and Purpose of the labPurpose: to understand how convection
currents inside Earth affect tectonic platesQuestion: How are density and convection
currents related?
Step 2-
• Filled the beaker with 100 mL of water and then found the mass of the beaker plus water.
• Recorded in data table found on page 10
Step 4-
• Filled the empty beaker with 100 mL of oil and then found the mass of the beaker plus oil.
• Recorded in data table found on page 10
Step 5-
• Find the mass of the liquids along•Subtract the mass of the liquid plus the beaker from the mass of the beaker alone.•Recorded in data table found on page 10
Step 6-• Find the density of each liquid by dividing the mass of the liquid alone by its volume•Hint the volume of each liquid is 100 mL•Recorded in data table found on page 10
Step 7-• Write a hypothesis of what will happen when the
oil is poured into the water on question 8 on page 10. Don’t forget to put the why!
Step 9-• Skip to question 14 on page 11 of your geosphere
packet. • Write your hypothesis and reason why for the
wooden disk.
Step 12-• Write your hypothesis and reason why for the ice
cube. The ice cubes were colored green so they were easier to see.
InstructionsPlease go to the following YouTube link to watch a
convection current. After watching it answer the questions found on page 12 of your geosphere packet.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xWWowXtuvA
The tank is on two buckets. One side is cold the other side is hot.
Some of the questions ask about pepper, which was not demonstrated in the video. Please imagine that pepper was sprinkled on top.Hint with the pepper questions, which way is the
water moving.
