The son of Abraham and Martha. He was born in Chaddesley Corbett on the 7th October 1811 and christened there on the 27th December 1811.1 Abraham married Mary Southall (1813-1847) at Ribbesford, Worcestershire on the 18th March 1832.2 Abraham was accused of stealing a horse in August 1835.3 Shrewsbury Chronicle 21 August 1835

Abraham Canadine is committed to our gaol this week for trial charged with with stealing a horse at Bridgnorth. He was later accused of Larceny in 1835 but acquitted at Shropshire quarter sessions.4 The notes on his record stated that he could read and write. Shropshire quarter sessions

Abraham Canadine, Age: 25 Date of Trial: 19 Oct 1835 Offence: Larceny Sentence: Acquittal Able to read and write, age 25 At the 1841 census Mary was living Bridgnorth with another family (her grandparents?).5 This might indicate Abraham and Mary were living apart; there were further problems in 1845. 1841 Census

In 1845 Abraham was charged with abandoning his wife and children. He had apparently left them before Christmas and was later found working with his brother Richard in a wood near Redditch.6 Coventry Standard – 13 January 1845

Ansty Petty Sessions, Jan 28 Abraham Cannadine, formerly of Stoke, a stout, strong built man, who said he was a charcoal burner, was charged by Mr James Bray, Relieving Officer of Foleshill Union, with running away and leaving his wife and children chargeable to the parish of Stoke. Mary, his wife, a very decent looking woman, said that she and her husband had been living at Stoke for some time; that he left her on the day after Christmas, and had given her nine shillings, she had never seen or heard anything of him since; she generally had two days work a week as a charwoman; when she went to work at six in the morning till six at night she received a shilling; if she worked till eight o’clock she had fourteen pence; she sometimes earned a trifle more, but her earnings, upon average, had not been more than three shillings a week, and having four children, she found it quite inadequate to their support, and they were frequently without food for days together; Mr Bray had been made acquainted with her situation, and he had relieved her with three shillings and four loaves of bread. The husband was immediately sought after and found by Inspector Meakin, working in a wood, with his brother, near to Redditch.

The prisoner offered nothing in his defence, and was committed to Warwick for two months with hard labour. It is probably Mary who died in 1847; registered at Coventry in the December quarter.7 Abraham was mentioned in his father's Will of 1848. As to the remaining one sixth part or share of the said trust monies and premises. I declare and direct that my said trustees or trustee for the time being shall stand possessed thereof Upon trust for all and every the child and children of my son Abraham Canadine lawfully begotten or to be begotten who shall be living at the time of my decease and the issue of such of them as shall be then dead leaving lawful issue (such issue taking only his her or their deceased parents share) in equal shares and proportions as tenants in common and not as joint tenants. The said shares to become vested interests in such child and children and their issue respectively on their respectively attaining the age of twenty one yeas or dying under that age having lawful issues living at his or their death or respective deaths or born in due time afterwards. The bequest was probably left to the children directly because of Abraham’s earlier abandonment of his family and we think Mary had died by 1848. Abraham was described as a Charcoal burner when his son Thomas was married in 1865.8 Abraham died, age 39, on the 7th October 1850. He was buried in Belbroughton. There is a double memorial stone in the churchyard listing several family members.9 Mary Canadine who died April 31st 1824 age 73 also of [Thomas Cannadine] 8th --- 1832 age 72 Yrs. --- daughter of Thomas and [Mary] Canadine ---14th --- 10 Yrs. Ann and James were Abraham’s sister and brother and Martha was his mother. After Mary died in 1847 the children seem to have split up and been living with several different relatives. Mary said she had four surviving children in 1845 (see above). Abraham and Mary had seven children. Savage Attack on a Rawmarsh Police Constable

On Monday, at the Rotherham Police Court, before Mr. G.W. Chambers (chairmain), Mr. H. Otter, and Mr. C. Wright, Peter Craven, his wife, Rose Hannah Craven, and Sarah Jane Canadine, were charged with having unlawfully wounded Police Constable Young while in the execution of his duty, at Rawmarsh, on the 11th inst. Levi Adams was charged with aiding and abetting. Mr. F. Parker-Rhodes prosecuted, and in opening the case said that Young had been so seriously injured that he was confined to his bed, and Dr. Smith, of Parkgate, who was attending him, had forwarded a certificate to the court stating that the officer was not yet free from a considerable amount of danger, and he was unable to attend the court. Peter Craven came out of the Green Lane Tavern, Parkgate, and began to make a disturbance. The officer was on duty near the place, and he told Craven to be quiet and go away. Instead of doing that, he and the other prisoners attacked the officer, knocking him down, kicking him about the head and body most unmercifully, and belabouring him the head and face with half-bricks and cinders until the blood streamed down his face in a fearful manner. When Young’s injuries were examined by Dr. Smith, he found five deep cuts on his head and bruises on various parts of his body. During the disturbance a man named Shaw attempted to assist the officer, but he was prevented from doing so by Wm. Canadine striking him under the ear and shouting. ‘Will you assist a ----- like that instead of giving us a helping hand?’. Other people advised the prisoners to go into the fellow and kill him. Formal evidence as to the nature of the assault and in corroboration of Mr. Rhodes’ statements having been given by John Booth, the prisoners were asked if they had anything to say why they should not be remanded. Peter Craven said that Booth was a bookmaker, and asked him to accept 4 to 1 on Wilkinson, of Idle, for the Sheffield Handicap. He refused to accept that, and wanted 8 to 1. They then cursed each other, and from words they got to blows. When he went outside the public-house Young wanted him to go away, but he said that he should go into the house again. Young said that he should not do so, and struck him on the head with his stick. He struck the officer back again and a struggle ensued during which his wife tried to protect him. She only used her fist, and had no cinders or anything of that kind. The prisoners were then remanded for a week, the Bench agreeing to take bail for the women. William Canadine was then placed in the dock and formally remanded for a week, the magistrates agreeing to admit him to bail. Adams was also admitted to bail.

William married Martha Ann Stinson (1877-1960) in 1903; registered at Shepton Mallet in the December quarter.141 They were both officers in the Salvation Army and the wedding was reported in a local paper.142 Salvation Army Wedding

The wedding of two Captains in the Salvation Army is not an ordinary event, and though in some parts Salvation Army weddings are not uncommon, yet in Shepton Mallet no such function had ever taken place till Tuesday. Naturally very great interest was taken in the event, and there was a great gathering, not only of the members of the local corps, but of neighbouring corps and of officers from the district round, with many residents in the town not attached to the Army. The contracting parties were Captain William Canadine and Captain Martha Stinson. The former, who has been stationed in Shepton Mallet for a year past, is a native of Swinton, Yorkshire, whilst the bride is an Irish lass, from Coleraine, and has recently been in charge of the Calne station of the Army. The civil marriage took place very quietly at the Registry Office. West Shepton, in the afternoon of Tuesday, before Supt. Registrar, Mr. A.E. Nalder, and in the presence of Ensign and Mrs. Skinner, of Chippenham. Later in the day a bountiful spread was laid in the barracks, at which the visitors and members of the Army sat down in company with the happy pair. A neat wedding cake was a feature of the decoration of the head table. There was a large and merry gathering. Mrs. White was the leader in the tea arranagements. Among those present were the divisional officers, Major and Mrs. Measures, of Bristol; Ensign and Mrs. Skinner, of Chippenham; Ensign Allery, Wells; Capts. Huston and Edgell, Lieutenants Wakeley, Farnham, and Seabrook, the latter being the bride’s lieutenant. Following the tea an open-air meeting was held in the Market Place, and processions took place in which the officers named, the Wells Salvation Army band and a party of a score of little soldiers in white with blue sashes and bridal bouquets, took part. The colours, which are of importance in the ceremony, were wreathed in flowers, and were as usual borne by Mr. Witcombe, an old Crimean veteran, wearing his war medals, and supported by Mr. Tiley, another veteran. A move was made to the Hall, where a service was held of considerable impressiveness, on the lines the Army adopt, and in the course of it the marriage ceremony was conducted by Major Measures beneath the colours. The declarations of the bridal pair were made in terms similar to those embodied in the service book of the Church of England, with the addition of declarations of allegiance to the Army its work. Effective addresses were given by the Major, by the special friends of the happy pair, and by the bride and bridegroom. A pretty wedding anthem was given by the children, and the Wells band under Mr. J. Coombs, jun., rendered in excellent manner the Wedding March. At the close of the service a farewell to the district was given by Capt. Canadine. The newly married pair spend a brief interval at Chippenham, proceeding tomorrow to their next station at Clevedon. Yesterday Capt. and Mrs. Burrows from Maerdy, South Wales took charge of the Shepton Mallet station. At the 1911 census William and Martha were living in Plymouth.143 1911 Census
