Riding Dynamics

The T135 is the product of a long development process that started with hundreds of design sketches, 3D CAD development work and then further analysis and refinement based on computer simulation results and finally testing in on the test course and actual ASEAN road conditions.

Born of this process is the kind of handling that doesn't stress the rider and the kind of running performance they hope for. In order to achieve fine-tuned performance that can't be expressed simply in specs, or the kind of "feeling" you have to experience in order to really appreciate, Yamaha has continued to explore the realm of product creation that takes the perspective of the rider. And in the process we have developed exclusive software that quantifies and analyzes the elements of human sensitivities.

It is a Yamaha passion that keeps us from simply relying on specs and marketing data, and it is this passion among all the development staff that has produced the T135.

A Sense of Quality

The moment you straddle the seat of the T135 you sense that something is different from mopeds you have known until now. It is there in the slightly wider handlebars with their easy

inward bend, it is there in the quality look of the easy-to-read meter panel, in the solid riding position and the quality finish on the inside of the front inner panel.

It is all somehow different from Yamaha mopeds until now. As you take the riding position and look ahead, everything that enters your field of vision has look of quality that exceeds any expectations you had.

There is quality in the quiet purr of the idling engine. The feeling created by the optimum combination of liquid cooling, forged piston, the rigid 4-point engine mount, the cowling and the muffler. It is something that could never have been achieved with an air-cooled power unit.

Blade Design

Three Key Words to the T135 "Blade Design"

1. Emotional + Advanced Design that expresses the functionality of a moped plus an extra element of excitement. A design that adds a touch of emotional joy and satisfaction to daily life.

2. Metallic + Mechanical Design combining a dynamic, high-tech feeling with unique design elements. (A motorcycle-like image not found in mopeds before) A design so original that once you see it you will not forget it.

3. Glittering + Classy A design that shines not all over but in specific brilliant points expressing quality. (Combination lights give an upgrade quality touch not seen in mopeds before) Design that reflects the top-class performance of this model.

Neo Technology

Liquid-cooled engine

Features of the technology As an engine runs its temperature rises, but if the temperature reaches too high a level it affects the ability of the engine to deliver its full power. That is why a cooling system is necessary to ensure stable power output from an engine. There are two types of cooling systems for engines, the air-cooling system that uses air to cool the engine and the liquid-cooling system in which liquid is circulated through a system of passages around the engine called a water jacket. The liquid-cooling system is a familiar part of almost all automobile engines, but because of the extra weight it adds to the power unit, this system has seldom been used on motorcycles of the 100~150 cc class.

To ensure stable power output from the T135's high-performance engine, and to accommodate all kinds of use conditions, a liquid-cooling system has been adopted. At the same time, components like the radiator and water passages have been designed for optimum compactness and the body design utilized to make optimum use of air flow to cool the radiator so that it was still possible to achieve a lightweight, compact body.

Effect (User Benefits)(1) More stable power output in extended high-speed use or in hill climbing - The combined effects of optimum layout of the water jacket and optimized design of the area around the radiator create cooling performance that ensures stable power output in high-speed running and on uphills. (2) Low noise level that adds to the feeling of quality - Since the engine is surrounded by the cooling system water jacket, the coolant absorbs mechanical noise from the piston and valves and reduces vibration. This low vibration is another factor contributing to the quality feeling of the T135's ride.

DiASil Cylinder

Features of the technologyThe DiASil Cylinder is an all-aluminum cylinder made possible by an exclusive Yamaha aluminum forging technology. Because it uses a 20% silicon aluminum alloy, it is possible to create a cylinder wall that is so hard and durable that it eliminates the need for a conventional steel cylinder sleeve. And, because the cylinder is all aluminum, it has excellent heat dissipation qualities and reduces engine weight at the same time. (Aluminum dissipates heat at 3.1 times the rate of steel.) The T135 is the first ASEAN market model and only the second Yamaha model of all to adopt this advanced technology, following the Japanese market model "Grand Majesty 250."

Effect (User Benefits)(1) Maintenance-free - Because of the outstanding hardness of the DiASil cylinder wall, there is a substantial reduction in abrasion compared to a steel sleeve cylinder. (A reduction of 2 to 3 times according to Yamaha tests.) This eliminates the need for costly maintenance like sleeve replacement.(2) Reduced oil consumption - Unlike a steel sleeve which is engraved with fine grooves to facilitate oil lubrication, the DiASil cylinder is given a surface treatment that helps maintain an ideal oil film on the cylinder wall and thus reduces oil consumption. (3) Improved fuel economy - Because the cylinder, piston and surrounding parts are all made of aluminum, cooling is quick and efficient. This prevents heat-induced deterioration of engine performance and ensures ideal combustion efficiency.

4-valve 135cc engine

Features of the technology This is an engine that delivers both plenty of usable torque in the low- to mid-speed range and strong acceleration feeling from the mid-speed range on up to high speeds. In order to achieve this kind of character worthy of a next-generation moped, a displacement of 135 cc was chosen. The bore x stroke is 54 x 58.7 mm. Its high 11: 1 compression ratio is the same as on many large-displacement sports motorcycles, and with the hemispheric combustion chamber it helps produce a maximum power output of 8.63kW/8,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 12.0 N.m/6,000 rpm.

Furthermore, the optimum setting of the 1st and 2nd reduction ratios and the ratios of the 1st to 4th gears helps bring out the engine's full performance potential in a variety of use conditions, from stop and go city traffic to continuous high-speed running on highways. The 135cc displacement gives this motorcycle the added torque to handle low-speed running with ease, while the 4-valve combustion chamber contributes to excellent power feeling and acceleration in the mid- to high-speed range.

Effect (User Benefits)(1) Plenty of power at lower speeds - A 135cc displacement was chosen to ensure plenty of usable power at lower speeds. This means better performance in city riding and in traffic jams. (2) Enjoyable acceleration feeling - A 4-valve (2 intake, 2 exhaust) SOHC format is adopted. This helps produce optimum supply of air-fuel mixture in the mid- to high-speed range, which in turn enables strong acceleration performance.

Forged piston

Features of the technology The T135 adopts the first forged piston ever on a moped. The pistons used in most automobile and motorcycle engines are cast pistons, made by melting aluminum at high temperatures and pouring it into molds. The other type of piston is this forged type, which is made by forcing aluminum that has been heated to a certain sub-melting temperature into a mold under pressure. Because the aluminum alloy does not reach the melting point in this forged piston production method, it retains a stronger metallurgic matrix. For this reason, forged pistons can be made with a thinner, lighter body.

On the other hand, because of the difficulties of maintaining precise temperature control and other factors in the manufacturing process, forged pistons are more expensive to produce. In 1997, however, Yamaha succeed in the development of a "controlled forging technology" that enables mass production of forged pistons. These pistons are now used on Yamaha's R series supersport models. The T135 becomes the first ASEAN market model to feature a forged piston.

Effect (User Benefits)(1) Lower vibration - The lighter piston means smaller reciprocating mass when the piston is in motion, which in turn means that less vibration is produced. For the rider, this means a more comfortable ride with less vibration. (The engine's rigid mount system also contributes to lower vibration. This also contributes to better response.) (2) Outstanding reliability - Because high-strength aluminum alloy can be used, the forged pistons are more reliable.

Roller type rocker arm

Features of the technology In an SOHC engine the intake and exhaust valves are lifted and closed through the action of a single cam shaft via a "lever" part called the rocker arm. Since it functions on "lever" principle, this system enables a lift action that is larger than the actual range of motion of the cam. However, increasing the lift action in accordance with changes in engine rpm puts increased load on the slipper (the contact surface between the peak of the rocker arm and the cam) that contributes to horsepower loss.

With the roller type rocker arm, a small round roller bearing is employed on the slipper to reduce friction and create a smoother valve action. This mechanism has been used on some automobiles until now, but Yamaha has now applied it to motorcycles by developing an exclusive design employing a needle roller bearing. This is the mechanism adopted now on the T135 and it is only the third Yamaha motorcycle to adopt it, following the European market "XT660R/X" and the Japanese market "Vino."

Effect (User Benefits)(1) Outstanding fuel economy . . . . . By enabling constant bearing revolution at the slipper, cam resistance is reduced, thus reducing horsepower loss which in turn contributes to improved fuel economy. (2) Enjoyable ride in the low- to mid-speed range . . . . . The smoother valve action contributes to a smoother running feeling in the low- to mid-speed range.

Accelerator pump

Features of the technology A VM carburetor with an accelerator pump has been adopted. The VM carburetor is a proven standard on motorcycles. In order to achieve even more precise control of air-fuel mixture supply, the VM carburetor on the T135 is also fitted with an accelerator pump that functions to supply added fuel as necessary, beginning from a certain degree of throttle opening.

Effect (User Benefits)(1) Outstanding out-of-the-hole acceleration - Because this carburetor system ensures a full supply of fuel even when the throttle is opened sharply from the idling position, you get great start-up acceleration.(2) Excellent passing acceleration - Excellent response is achieved when accelerating from the mid-speed range to pass another vehicle.

TPS (Throttle Position Sensor)

Features of the technology A throttle position sensor (TPS) has been adopted on the T135 to enable ignition timing control utilizing a 3-D program map based on signals on engine rpm and throttle opening.

Effect (User Benefits)(1) Outstanding fuel consumption characteristics - Optimum ignition timing in accordance with actual running conditions contributes to excellent fuel economy. (2) Excellent drivability - The optimized ignition timing means that there is more efficient burning of the fuel droplets in the combustion chamber, which in turn contributes to improved drivability.

Diamond frame

Features of the technology For the frame, with its important role in determining the ride and handling stability of a motorcycle, a new-design diamond type pipe frame with excellent rigidity balance was developed. For the engine mounts, a 4-point rigid type mount system was designed that uses the engine as a stressed member that contributes to chassis strength and rigidity. Also, by designing the main frame assembly with a high level of lateral rigidity, excellent straight-line running stability has been achieved. And, the back stay adopts a special Yamaha design truss assembly for greater reliability when carrying heavier loads. Meanwhile, the 45% front, 55% rear weight distribution and optimized center of gravity, caster and trail dimensions and fork offset spec all contribute to a very natural handling feeling.

Effect (User Benefits)(1) Excellent straight-line running stability - The outstanding rigidity balance of the frame gives this model excellent straight-line running stability (2) Natural handling at very low speeds - The optimized chassis dimensions and center of gravity position give this model a very natural handling feeling even at very low speeds.

Monocross suspension

Features of the technology A Monocross suspension with its many advantages like better concentration of mass, optimum rigidity balance and capacity for plenty of wheel travel has been adopted. When added to the rigidity of the T135's frame and rear arm, the effect of this Monocross suspension helps bring out excellent cornering characteristics with just the right amount of "give."

Effect (User Benefits)(1) Natural handling with the right amount of "give" -By giving just the right amount of "forgiveness" in the rigidity of the chassis from the machine's center back to the rear axle, naturally smooth handling with the right amount of give has been achieved.

(2) Enjoyable cornering performance - By enabling a better concentration of mass, this suspension helps achieve good handling characteristics that let you run the lines you want through the curves in the mid- to high-speed range.

(3) Comfortable ride - Because it allows for plenty of rear wheel travel, the Monocross suspension makes the ride more comfortable.

Aerodynamic cowling

Features of the design Aerodynamic cowling has been adopted. The air flow directed to the radiator by the front air guides helps promote better engine cooling effect. Furthermore, a separate set of air ducts has been designed to direct air flow through the cowling to cancel out heat developing there so that the rider does not feel a flow of hot air coming up directly from the radiator.

Effect (User Benefits)(1) Excellent cooling performance - By increasing the cooling capacity of the radiator, this air-flow system contributes to more stable engine performance. (2) More comfortable ride - Because hot air from the radiator does not gather around the rider, the ride is more comfortable. (3) Distinctive exterior look - The aerodynamic look of the cowling fuses with the rest of the machine design too create a distinctive exterior appearance.

Sports type muffler with multi-tube catalyzer

Features of the technology The T135 adopts Yamaha's air induction system that cleans the exhaust by re-burning (oxidizing) any unburned fuel in the exhaust pipe. The exhaust that has been cleaned once in this way is then cleaned once again in the muffler by a catalytic converter function. Adopting multi-tube muffler format to increase the exposure surface, the catalytic elements of platinum, rhodium and palladium that coat the tube walls serve to oxidize toxic content in the exhaust through catalysis. In the process CO is converted to CO2, HC to H2O and CO2 and NOx is converted to N2, H2O and CO2. The result is environment friendly exhaust that clears emission standards for HC, CO and NOx.

Effect (User Benefits)(1) Cleaner exhaust - Excellent environmental performance is achieved by producing cleaner exhaust. (2) Outstanding drivability - In combination with the optimized carburetor settings, excellent drivability is ensured.
