Stories provide contexts for our understanding of facts, emotions, discoveries, history, relationships, and all kinds of human interaction. For this reason, the Moraine Valley Library and the Moraine Valley Bookstore invite all members of the Moraine Valley community to come together to discuss a selected story in the One Book, One College program. Join us in discussing a selected story so that we may share knowledge across disciplines, exchange new ideas on useful topics, and enrich our curriculum in new ways. As they ransacked her apartment, they accused her of being an American spy. She was arrested and taken to the notorious Evin Prison. Saberi was eventually tried and sentenced to an eightyear prison term. Her imprisonment led to an international outcry by major media outlets such as the BBC, ABC News, NPR, and the Wall Street Journal; human rights and journalism organizations; and ordinary individuals around the world. President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton also spoke out for Saberi’s release. Saberi’s story is a personal account of her time in prison and her internal transformation as she struggles to stay true to her principles and her commitment to the truth. Along the way, Saberi befriends other women prisoners who teach her timeless, universal lessons about compassion, courage, and facing adversity. At the same time, as an American woman who grew up in North Dakota with an Iranian father and a Japanese mother, she takes the reader into a multicultural world where ideologies and identities comingle. We invite the greater Palos community to join us in exploring this book and the many themes it represents. Saberi invites us into a conversation about our connections to our worldwide community and the potential each of us has to help empower the voiceless. About the Palos Reads Program When Palos Fine Arts was founded some 30 years ago to create a cultural sprit in the community, the concentration was to promote vocal and instrumental music, visual arts, dance, design, and drama. Artists in these disciplines were spotlighted with gallery showings, concerts, scholarships for the talented students and women. In 2003, it was at the instigation of board member Beverly Opelka that activity in the literacy spirit began with the creation of a onebook manyreaders program. "Palos Reads" was begun in October of that year as an addition to Illinois Arts Month and a local author was featured with a charming book, The Rich Part of Life. In 2004, the three Palos Libraries (Green Hills Public Library District , Palos Heights Public Library , and Palos Park Public Library ) became a natural addition to the partnership. From this beginning, Palos Reads has soared from Chicago writers Audrey Niffeneger and Robert Kurston to those afar with a biography of Harper Lee, Nancy Horan's Loving Frank and Susan Vreeland coming from San Diego to detail Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party to 150 guests at Palos Country Club. This year, Palos Fine Arts has invited Roxana Saberi, author of Between Two Worlds: My Life and Captivity in Iran, the tale of her attempts to learn about and love her father's homeland. Since Moraine Valley Community College's curriculum and One Book program fit perfectly with the Palos Fine Arts choice, the college is joining with Palos Reads
