About the Youth Entrepreneurship Education Continuum
The Western Reserve Historical Society (WRHS), in partnership with the Cleveland Metropolitan School
District (CMSD), created the Youth Entrepreneurship Education (YEE) continuum model in 2013, an initiative
launched with leadership funding from the Burton D. Morgan Foundation.
Two of WRHS’s museums, the Cleveland History Center and Hale Farm & Village, serve as idea incubators to
nurture innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit in Northeast Ohio students. The YEE continuum is designed to
use the stories of entrepreneurs and companies, such as yours, to inspire students to pursue the potential
of an idea to solve a problem or create an opportunity for themselves and their communities. At a young age,
students begin to cultivate 21st century skill sets and embrace the entrepreneurial mindset to build and steward
the foundations of healthy communities. Proceeds from the HYC dinner support WRHS’s education initiatives
which serve over 36,000 students annually, including 10,000 who participate in the YEE continuum.
4th Grade | Roots of Entrepreneurship in Northeast Ohio | Hale Farm & Village Students discover how early entrepreneurs provided the foundation for the growth of early Ohio communities. Students explore the early American crafts and trades venues while discovering a rural, barter-driven, pre- industrial economy. These experiences lead to the discovery of entrepreneurial concepts and key vocabulary acquisition.
5th Grade | Setting the World in Motion | Cleveland History Center
Surrounded by the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum collection and examples of Cleveland’s most innovative minds
of the 20th century, students identify the characteristics of an entrepreneur. Then, they imagine themselves as
entrepreneurs and creatively use primary source documents to learn about productive resources and regional
specialization. Scholars then use their gained knowledge as a class to complete an onsite business plan.
6th Grade | REVolution | Cleveland History Center
Utilizing the REVolution exhibit, the Chisholm Halle Costume Wing, and Cleveland Starts Here®, a core exhibition
and digital platform, students explore how Cleveland entrepreneurs shaped and continue to innovate and
influence the American and global experience.
7th Grade | Raising the Dough | WRHS Research Library
Using the WRHS Research Library collections, students explore the essential question of how the
entrepreneurial spirit supports a healthy community. Students focus on local business Hough Bakery, Inc.
Students analyze primary source documents both in the classroom using the Cleveland Starts Here® Digital
Portal, and on-site at the WRHS Research Library. Students will conduct research to help Hough Bakery, Inc.
make a business decision by completing a cost-benefit analysis.
We hope you will support this exciting initiative
and our young Entrepreneurs-in-Training!
