Welcome to the January/February issue of About Stillorgan

Hello and welcome to our first edition of AboutStillorgan for 2011.

This month we highlight the current plight of a localcharity still trying to raise much needed funds, I wroteabout their plight very briefly in the last edition and Ihave been made aware of how desperate they are tokeep their essential project going. As we all find thingsa little tighter in the pocket, worthwhile local projectslike this tend to lose out to much larger scale globalfundraising. If like Saplings School you are involved ina local charity or community group we would love tohear from you to highlight your program.

If like me you overdid the picking at the Turkey andstuffing this Christmas or just need to lose a fewpounds we have some excellent advice and solutionsfrom renowned South Dublin Nutritionist AnneOwens.

The Mill Theatre’s new full program of great nights outat the theatre for January and February and we alsohighlight one of their popular Drama groups, theaward winning Balally Players. If you are looking toopen up your own set of lung’s and set the music free,CORus are looking for budding singers all over SouthDublin to join in their new no audition choirs, so lookfor them.

As always there is plenty for everyone Events, News,Advice and Competitions, if you have any interest inwriting a piece on your local area, event or somethingthat you think our readers might be interested in thenplease contact us we would be happy to discussdeveloping it.

Happy New Year to you all and here’s hoping for agreat 2011.

ABOUT HEALTH

Healthy you, healthy bank balance

Healthy you, healthy bank balance: 7 top ways to

save money while getting healthy.

Whilst spending on your health is going to accelerate

your return to fitness after the Christmas excesses, there

are many things you can do which either cost very little

or which will even save you money while improving

your general well being.

Go to bed. Late nights, rich food, alcohol – all very well

when you can have a lay in the next day. But if you are

up early too, your body will start to suffer from both

lack of sleep time and sleep quality. Not enough

bedtime rest can lead to depression, anxiety and a

general feeling of being run down.

Switch off. Just because you are in the living room,

doesn’t mean you have to have the TV on. Try taking

just five minutes a day in the house with no noise or

only low volume soothing music in the background. Sit

or lie in a comfortable position, shut your eyes, and

focus your mind on your breathing. You will find this

helps to cope with the stress of 21st century life.

Make your own beauty products. Whilst you are

unlikely to completely abandon the beautifully

packaged commercial products, you can occasionally

use natural ingredients to make a fabulous organic

product for small change. For example, cooled strong

camomile tea (no milk) is great to give your hair a

colour lift. Do some research on the internet for more

ideas.

Go for a walk. Not only is a walk free and beneficial for

your physical health, it’s also fantastic for your mental

health giving you time away from chores and other

people’s demands on your time. Take your partner with

you and this gives you chance to talk about everyday

life and future plans, so great for your relationship

health too.

Don’t stew your vegetables. Cook your vegetables in

as little water as possible and until they are just cooked.

Not only does this mean that your cooking time will be

shorter (saving you money) but the vegetables will keep

more nutrients and be healthier.

Kick the bad habits. Smoking, too much alcohol, sweet

addiction: you already know that these aren’t good for

you and that you should be giving them up. But if

being a goody-two-shoes is still a way off for you, try to

cut down. Plan in a ‘dry day’ a week – no ciggies, wine

or chocolate for a full day each week – and you’ll find it

improves your health, saves you money and might just

give you the momentum to cut down even more.

Look after your teeth. If your gums bleed when you

brush them then you have a problem and you should

go to the dentist. This usually means that bacteria is

getting into your bloodstream and could eventually

lead to heart problems no matter how healthy you are.

But even if they don’t bleed, good dental hygiene with

twice-a-day brushing, flossing, and chewing sugar-free

gum, will ensure your teeth and gums are kept in top

condition, which in turn will save you money when you

do go to the dentist.

ABOUT RECIPE

Lemon Chicken with a Cashew Crunch

With Christmas gone and the new year started with

healthy intentions, we didn’t think it fair to tempt

hungry readers with something cream-filled or

chocolate-dipped. But healthy doesn’t have to mean

boring, so here’s a little something for those cold

January nights that’s packed with colourful vegetables

and full of flavour.

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon of olive oil

2 chicken breasts, sliced

1 clove of garlic, peeled and diced

1 onion, sliced

150g broccoli

1 large carrot, cut into sticks

1 red or yellow pepper, cut into strips

200ml chicken stock

1 tbsp cornflour

2 tbsp honey

1 lemon, grated rind and juice

75g cashew nuts

A handful of beansprouts or white cabbage

Chilli flakes (for an optional kick!)

Brown rice or noodles to serve.

Serves: 2

Method:

1. Heat the oil in a large pan or wok and add the

chicken. Stir fry for a few minutes until the chicken

begins to turn gold, then set aside.

2. In the same pan, cook the onion and garlic until they

begin to brown, then add the broccoli and carrot

and cook for about a minute.

3. In a jug mix the stock, honey and cornflour together

and pour into the pan. Return the chicken to the

heat and stir until the sauce has thickened and the

chicken is cooked through.

4. Tip in the lemon rind, juice, cashews and a sprinkle

of chilli flakes if desired and serve with brown rice or

noodles - and a healthy conscience.

ABOUT COMPUTERS

Cyberbullying and your teen

I have spoken to a lot of parents of teens lately whoare worried about cyberbullying, or bullying usingtechnology.

Who is doing it? It’s important to recognise that veryoften the cyber bully will be quite different to thetraditional schoolyard bully. The cyber bully cansometimes be the schoolyard victim, looking to usetheir intellect or technological knowledge to getrevenge. Sometimes it’s the small group of “MeanGirls” who get together to embarrass or intimidate forfun.

What do they do? Victims of cyberbullying can havetheir personal information put up on chatrooms orwebsites by the bully in a bid to draw unwantedattention to them. They can have their accountshacked and passwords stolen, so the bully can goonline masquerading as the victim in order to saymean things about their friends to alienate them. These are just some of the ways the victim can bebullied.

So what can we as parents and educators do toprevent it and to deal with it when it happens? First ofall we need to be aware of the danger signs. Is yourchild spending considerably more or considerably lesstime on their computer than they used to? Has theirbehaviour changed? Has their mobile phone billsuddenly gone up? Remember that your child couldbe the bully just as easily as the victim.

What can we do if we discover our child is a victim of

cyberbullying? A survey was done in the Statesrecently which showed that less than 5% of teenswould tell their parents if they were being bulliedonline. When asked why not, they said that they wereafraid their parents would either overreact or underreact, and not take it seriously.

Engage with the child and educate yourself. I’ve oftenheard children say “I can do whatever I like onFacebook, my parents don’t even know what it is”.How about sitting down with the child and askingthem to help you set up a Facebook page so you cankeep in touch with old friends. That way you’ll learnhow it works. Educate the child as well. Commonsense would say you shouldn’t put personalinformation online, so learn about privacy settings, and teach your child to set everything to private, visible by invitation only. Many people think this is thedefault, but it isn’t. Teach them not to entercompetitions online or to register for sites unless theycheck with you first. Keep the computer in a publicspace where you can look in on them regularly, andlimit their time online. Work with the school, they mayspot something you don’t. Teach them that everyoneonline is a stranger. That 12 year old girl online mightbe a 45 year old man. Lastly, don’t do it alone, talk tosomeone who can help.

If you are worried about how to make your onlineexperience more secure there are professionals that wehave used and we are sure that if you ask for advicethey will give as much information as possible.

Bytes & PiecesDealing with SPAM

It’s almost impossible to avoid getting spam into youremail account. However a bit of prevention anddealing with it when it arrives will minimise thequantity.

Some spammers use software to randomly generateemail addresses for popular email providers e.g.hotmail.com. Commonly called dictionary attacks, thesoftware will guess the first part of an email address – forexample HYPERLINK "mailto:[email protected]"[email protected]. So when creating your emailaddress ensure you use special characters such asunderscores or numbers.

Some spammers use special software called emailharvesters which scan webpages for email addresses.Common targets are message boards and socialnetworking websites. So when including your emailaddress on a webpage (for example when you use amessage board) try to obscure it. For example, use johnAT yourprovider.com instead of using the @ symbol.

SPAM emails will almost always invite you tounsubscribe from their mailing list. This is a way forthem to confirm your email address is real. It will offera link, or it will say something like 'Reply to this emailwith UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject'. Only unsubscribefrom mails you are certain you originally subscribed to.

ABOUT NUTRITION

Lose Weight and Feel Great

Have you been gaining weight over the last fewyears?Do you find it increasingly difficult to lose weight?Do you crave particular foods?Do you feel tired all the time?Have you been yo-yo dieting?

If the answer to any of above is yes then your bloodsugar is probably out of balance. Keeping your bloodsugar stable is the secret to losing weight. You may befamiliar with the Glycemic Index (GI) of foods, however the Glycemic Load (GL) is a better way ofgauging the effect of foods on your blood sugar levels, and thus your energy, wellbeing and weight.

GL is a measure of the quantity and quality ofcarbohydrate in any given food. It shows us the effecteach type of food has on our blood sugar. Foods witha high GL rating encourage the body to "store" fat.Foods with a low GL rating enourage the body to"burn" fat.

You might be amazed by some of the foods that havea high GL rating. Cornflakes have a very high GL whilstice cream and peanuts do not! Your body is designedto burn glucose for energy. Carbhydrates such asgrains ( bread, pasta, rice ) and fruits are broken downinto glucose in the body.

But in today’s typical western diet, the wrong types ofcarbohydrates are consumed excessively resulting intoo much blood glucose. The excess is stored as fatleaving the body craving even more food to meet itsenergy requirements. When this happens the bodyhas lost blood sugar control and weight gain becomesinevitable.

If your blood glucose levels are even, you'll have asteady supply of energy and a healthy but balancedappetite. But, if your blood sugar levels are too high, you'll lay down fat and if they are too low, you'll feeltired and lethargic. Balance is key.

A quarter of all people, and nine out of ten peoplewith weight problems have difficulty keeping theirblood sugar balanced. The result is exhaustion andweight gain. Obese people are 77 times more at riskof developing diabetes than non-obese people - astatistic that alone tells you how strongly linked weightgain is to blood sugar control.

So, the best way to lose weight is to regain bloodsugar control which heralds the return of your body'sability to burn fat.

How to balance your blood sugar -Avoid sugar and stimulants (coffee, tea, alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes )Eat a low Glycemic Load diet.Eat protein with carbohydratesDrink plenty of waterExercise every day.

ABOUT GARDENING

Round the Garden in January

There are two seasonal diversions that can ease thebite of any winter. One is the January thaw, the otheris the seed catalogues. Hal Borland.

What can be more relaxing than using this quiet, dark andcold time of year as an opportunity to look through pagesof the seed and shrub catalogues? You can spend plentyof time browsing pages of perfect flowers and shrubs, planning where they will fit into your garden.

The more planning you can do, the more likely yourgarden and choice of new plants will be a success.Research the plants that catch your eye and make surethey will grow on your soil and fit your garden once fullygrown. Look back at the past garden year; what thrivedand survived and what failed or outgrew its home?

If you have never ordered from catalogues before orhaven’t received any through the post, you can usuallyfind adverts in newspapers and magazines. It’s worthordering a few to gain some background information ona range of plants and also to see the countless newvarieties that will have been recently released. Often thecatalogues carry varieties not found in the garden centres.

Plug-plants are a great way of buying a considerablenumber of plants, usually annuals, to create large swathesof colour later in the year. However remember they aretiny seedlings that need to be grown on in a greenhousebefore planting out. If you don’t have a greenhouse thenpay a little more and buy plants that are larger.

Dine to Meet make meeting new people a far more palatable experience. We arrange for

ABOUT DATING

Dine to Meet

We make the reservation, the restaurant serves thefood . . . .the rest is up to you!

The New Year is a great time to make promises to extendyour social network etc. but how is the best wa to dothis??

We all know somebody who has tried different ways tomeet new people whether it is speed dating, blind dates, online dating etc. with mixed results. At Dine to Meet,we have a great insight into what can work for one personmay not work for another - the saying that ‘one size fits all’is not true!

From a marketing point of view, we are always remindedto focus on similarities of different services in existence –however in our case we took the feedback of why peoplewere disenchanted with the above services and produceda totally different option! Dinner dates in a small group.

One of the major concerns about meeting new people isthe safe environment & atmosphere of how and where

the meeting takes place. We make the restaurantreservation & arrange one small table (and by small wemean 6 or 8 people in total) with same number of men &women.

A generalisation is that men tend to be hesitant to try newoptions and we want to change this and encourage moremales as members! - so if you are a man or know any menover 30 who might be interested – check out orencourage them to check out our websitewww.dinetomeet.ie or call 087 7640 385

ABOUT CHARITY

Saplings School - For Children with Autism

Until relatively recently, Autism was considered adevastating diagnosis with grim prospects for thesufferer and their family. Now we know that peoplewith autism can in fact be helped enormously towardsindependence, if they receive Applied BehaviouralAnalysis (ABA) intervention in their early childhoods.

Through one-to-one education and therapy, students atSaplings learn how to learn. This is something thatchildren with autism are unable to do to a greater or lesserdegree in the natural environment. If children with autismare not taught the fundamental step of how to learn, many of them don’t learn – hence the potentiallydevastating nature of autism.

‘Learning’ at Saplings incorporates everything from eating, dressing and going to the toilet independently, to formingsocial relationships and making friends; from regulatingone’s emotional responses and anxiety as a result ofheightened senses, to academic subjects such as reading, writing and maths. Communication skills – using speech, sign language or pictures – is one of the most importantsubjects taught at Saplings.

Much of the extremely challenging behaviour traditionallyassociated with autism – including tantrums, aggression, injury to self and others – is a result of the autistic person’sfrustration and isolation. Saplings take these vulnerablechildren, who are at risk of social exclusion andinstitutionalisation, it gives them the chance to unlock andachieve their full potential.

People with autism are fascinating and unusual. Theirheightened sensitivity often provides them withexceptional gifts, high levels of creativity and artistry anda unique perspective on life, as well as many challengesthat the ‘neurotypical’ population never face.

The State currently provides our children with basicrequirements. These are minimum service levels thatprovide basic care, but do not allow for higher level needsof these children to be satisfied.

The parents of Saplings are constantly seeking to securethe funding for crucial projects. Every month they struggleto raise the €14,000 needed in which to teach theirchildren daily living skills, engage in family life and educatethemselves in the many extra skills that they need asparents of Autists.

With the economic situation as it is, local groups such asSaplings are struggling even more to raise their muchneeded funds and are now running at a deficit which hasled to them having to reduce the teaching staff, meaningthat new children admitted to the school could be missingout on crucial progress in a child’s development.

One local business has helped last December, EBSRathfarnham donated €500 through the EBS Communityfund which provides support to projects that benefit localcommunities around Ireland, with the intention that themoney helps people to continue the great work that theydo.

To date over a quarter of a million euro has been donatedunder the EBS Community Fund and in the last round ofthe fund 21 South Dublin causes received funding from aspecial 75th Birthday round.

If you wish to know more about Saplings School orhow to help with their much needed fund raising youcan contact Rowena Maiden on 087 6822363 [email protected]

If you know of a charity or local group in South Dublinthat would like to have their story told please contact us.

ABOUT LEGAL MATTERS

Legal Considerations For Motor Accidents

At Dillon Solicitors we sincerely hope that you arenever involved in a motor accident. However, in theunfortunate event that you are we wish to provideyou with some practical legal advice.

Ten legal considerations when involved in anaccident:1. Stop. Keep your vehicle at or near the scene of the

accident for a reasonable amount of time. 2. Ring 999 or 112 for emergency services if anyone is

injured. 3. Note the make, colour and registration of the other

car.4. Exchange details of names, addresses of all parties involved in the accident. Take insurance details of other cars from the insurance disk of vehicle. 5. Take note of the injuries complained of by you and

by others.6. Take photos of scene if possible. Use the phone in your camera if necessary. 7. Do not admit liability or state who was right or wrong.8. Get witness details, addresses and phone numbers.9. Ring 999 for the local Garda Station. Take note of Garda on duty to whom the report is made. 10. Notify your insurance company as soon as possible.

If you have a motor accident the law says you muststop. If you drive away, you could be charged with hitand run even if the accident was not your fault. Youshould give reasonable assistance to anyone who isinjured. For example, you may need to call anambulance, take the injured person to a doctor orhospital, or give first aid— only if you know how.

What if I do not know the identity of the otherdriver?Sometimes it is impossible to obtain the details of theother driver at the scene of an accident. However, youcan still pursue a claim even if you do not know theidentity of the party at fault. If the Gardai have attendedthe accident scene your Solicitor can and pay a smallfee for the details of the other driver and request therelevant Gardai report.

If one has been the victim of what is known as a ‘hit andrun’ incident or have later discovered that the driver ofthe other vehicle was uninsured a legal remedy is stillavailable. In such circumstances your Solicitor can referthe matter to the Motor Insurers Bureau of Irelandwhich exists to protect the victims of car accidentswhen the party at fault is unidentified or uninsured. TheMIBI effectively acts as the ‘insurer’ of the unknown oruntraced driver .

Talk to us today if you have had an accident and youwish to discuss a possible claim or to obtain a copy ofour accident assist brochure that comes with a freeinsurance disk holder.

ABOUT TAROTSCOPES

Tarotscopes by MagsARIESYou welcome in the new year with an air of caution,Aries. Truly, the best way to come to terms with thefuture is to face the problems head on. A time ofthought, reflection and holding back on wastefulspending. You are at last willing to accept that you havea choice of which role you play in the formation of yourown happiness.

TAURUSYour patience is about to pay dividends. You are an avidbeliever in karma, thus you tend to send out a morepositive universal vibe, which in turn comes back to youin a positive way. Yes! You are so much loved, althoughthis may not always be evident. You are determined thisyear to reach a new spiritual highand truly tune in harmoniously withthe power of the heavens.

GEMINIYou want improvement so much. Allyou seek is on the way and the wheelof fortune spins out of control inyour favour. In love, the cards arestacked in your favour, although youcannot see that now. Your friend, who has cried a lot in the recentpast, is on the mend. He/sherespectively will settle down to awonderful, contented and harmonious life.

CANCERThe loneliness of the past make you appreciate thepresent. A word of caution; do not display possessivenesstowards a loved one, you have no need. You are verymuch loved; just be yourself. Unattached? A past lovewishes to re-enter your life. There is no winner or loser inthis, only a pure and forgiving love.

LEOLeo’s lot may not be as happy and harmonious as youwould like. The next few weeks sees the love life inturmoil. This is probably caused by you over-reacting towhat others see as normal. However, opening the doorsof communication allows reconciliation. A re-birth ofrelationship is on the cards.

VIRGOIf you are not in a relationship, you will be agreeable andsay yes to a romance that can only blossom as time goeson. You have choices, but you are quite content tomuddle through for the time being. You seem to takesustenance from your religious beliefs and are muchcalmer as a result. A job offer from across the water is adecision only you can make.

LIBRAA “D” name can offer you so much support in all aspects ofyour life. If this is a romantic liaison, you are truly blessed. This may be the perfect time Libra, to take a long look atthe past and begin forgiving all those who upset thebalance in your life. Your friend announces her engagementand you are over the moon for her.

SCORPIOMiracles do happen and you have no problem asking forand expecting to receive such. Your life and business maybe put relatively on hold for a while. Being realistic is the keyto success. A chain of events set in motion kick start a spateof travel that, over the next year will yield fruit. Cards advisethat you look deeper into your own actions.

SAGITTARIUSRight now, an authority figure isthrowing his weight around you mustoverride this in your brain. The overallpicture is more important. A false poweris worthless, but you are headed towardsthe real deal. You have knownunhappiness in the past, but thecontentment you desire is for the future;the past was just to get you ready for thedue rewards.

AQUARIUSA “W” name is a sure winner for you at this wondrous time.Your link with luck is snow, a gift and a key. You may havebeen in a crowd, but you can be a lonelier soul than most.Love from the distant past re-enters the scene at the sametime you are ready to try the new courtier wishing to playa major role in your life.

CAPRICORNYou begin to question the motives of even your closestfellows. You are very wise to be cautious, but not paranoid.Nobody can fire any ammunition at you only theinformation you, yourself give out. You have so much tocelebrate this year your mind is boggled. Wheel of fortunebrings cash luck to you and yours.

PISCESA couple of trips away to the country to meet up with palsis on the immediate agenda. This is so good for theunattached as the universe is setting up the chain of eventsthat ultimately lead you to your destiny. You are very fussywhen it comes to choosing a partner, but this is how youare and changing would mean you not being true toyourself.
