About Digital Textile PrintingThe Printing Studio uses direct digital textile printing technology, which is a cutting edge print system using inkjet printing. There are numerous benefits to digital textile printing, including:

• Extensive, dazzling colour

• Flexible printing runs, from a minimum of l m to production quantities

• Limited constraints with repeat size

• More creativity with imagery, with very fine detail, enabling artwork to be printed with unlimited illustrative or photographic results

• Engineered printing; the possibility of prints designed to fit the garment

Environmental benefits:

• Minimal fabric waste, as printed fabric amounts are controlled

• Zero ink waste

• Local printing production reduces delivery and shipping strains

The printer at The Printing Studio uses acid dyes, which prints onto silk and nylon.

Traditional Printing Technology

The most common form of printing textiles in industry is rotary or flatbed screen printing. This system has constraints, including limited imagery freedom, flat colour, and limited colour, as each additional colour is an extra process and cost. The minimum quantity for screen printing is high to make the process cost effective, meaning that there is a lot of wasted printed fabric, and limited opportunity for sampling.

The Printing Studio is a subset of The Social Studio. It operates as a training program and a small business, the profits of which go towards tuition and other expenses for running the Clothing Production and Textile Design courses at The Social Studio.

The enterprise is available for any clients looking to have a highlight print for a fashion label, for craftsman including digital prints in their works, for students sampling prints, and any other apparel or design use.

We also utilise the printer for the in-house collections for The Social Studio.

A colour print out is recommended as a colour reference for strike off / colour matching

Strike Off

The colours which are printed from a printer are always very different from the colours which appear on screen. As a colour reference please provide a hard copy version of your artwork. You will then be sent back a few colour variation options to choose from before the final artwork is printed. The strike off process is required for each separate artwork to be printed.

Printed swatch books and colour charts are available to order in store or via our website:

Once a colour option has been decided on, the final artwork will be printed at full quantity. It will be available for collection from The Social Studio, or by postage – a standard fee of $15 applies and will be sent via express post.

Turnaround is standard 2 weeks, or slightly longer for larger quantities. A 5% surcharge will be applied for express 10 day turn around.
