available for feasibility studies and
conceptual solutions.
Hoist control and monitoring
systems
ABB's hoist control system is based
on Industrial
IT
technology. Comply-ing with stringent safety and avail-ability requirements of mine hoistapplications, this powerful, user-friendly control system is built upfrom ABB ControlIT and ABBOperateIT.
The fully automatic system includescontrol of feeders, conveyors andmeasuring flasks at the loadinglevel as well as pushbutton controlof multi-level man/material hoists. The system also provides semi-
automatic testing of safety functions
and prints out comprehensiveproduction and performancereports.
The AHM 110 Advant HoistMonitor is an independent unit thatprovides protection against over-speed and overwinding.
Drive systems
ABB is the leader in drive technology. The latest technology, DriveITACS6000SD, with DTC, Direct Torque
Control, using IGCT, IntegratedGate Commutated Thyristors, fortorque and speed control of ACmotors is now well proven forhoist applications. It offers highefficiency, superior control perform-ance, low voltage drop in thesupply network and low harmonicdistortion as well as very low flicker.
Synchronous motors are used fordirect drives and induction motorsfor geared drives.
DC motors of all sizes are avail-able for geared drive applicationsand for thyristor converter drives. All drives are equipped with
powerful maintenance software,Drives Window.
Hoist machinery
ABB employs powerful FEA and3D tools for the engineering of thesystems and their components. Fullquality assurance is implementedthroughout the engineering and
manufacturing processes.

Pulleys and drums are availablein split or unsplit design. Brakediscs are welded or bolted on tothe shell plate. SKF spherical rollerbearings are selected to ensure highefficiency and long service life.
Hydraulic disc brake system
Multi-caliper disc brakes are usedfor emergency stop and holding at
standstill. The hydraulic control unit is equip-ped with dual systems to meet thehighest safety requirements. Thecorrect operation of all componentsis continuously monitored.
Controlled retardation provides theset retardation rate independent ofthe actual payload and direction ofmovement. It also increases themargins to rope slip in friction hoists.
Rope Oscillation ControlFor mine hoists operating in deepshafts, ABB has developed ROC,Rope Oscillation Control. Integratedinto the electric drive system, itgreately reduces the oscillationsduring the hoisting cycle whileincreasing the rope life and thetransport comfort during men hoist-ing. Integrated into the emergencycontrol brake circuit, it allows thestatic rope safety to be reduced inaccordance with SABS 0294s
(South Africa) requirements.
Shaft equipment
ABB engineers and supplies com-plete shaft equipment includingskips, cages, guides, head and tailropes with their attachments. Meas-uring flasks and weighing convey-ors are also part of ABBs productportfolio.
Argus Advanced Diagnostic
ToolArgus is a powerful maintenancetool for local or remote fault find-ing, condition monitoring andmonitoring of the mine hoist per-formance. It is of modular designand integrated into the hoist con-trol and drive system. Using theremote diagnostic function, minehoist specialists in ABB servicecenters can identify the majorityof faults and address them.
Modernization of existing mine
hoists
In recent years, ABB has executednumerous projects for the modern-ization of mine hoists manufacturedby ABB or others. They range fromminor upgrades of single hoists tolarge revamps of complete hoistingplants such as that at LKABs minein Kiruna, Sweden, where a total often hoists with a combined capac-ity of 26.5 million tonnes per year
were modernized.
A new hydraulically controlled disc brake
system was supplied by ABB to Alrosa, the
Russian diamond mining company, for the
revamping of a mine hoist in one of its
diamond mines in Mirny in eastern Siberia.
