Partners network 18-19Almost half of 2010 has gone by, and I hope you have had a good

year so far. For the Low Voltage Products (LP) division, this year

has been an exciting one.

We are focusing on improving our understanding of the market in

order to serve our customers better.

We have also made improvements on our upstream selling,

sales to market, and last but not least, to our internal processes,

especially on our commitment to improve stock availability. It is

important our customers find it easy to do business with ABB.

In order to demonstrate how ABB’s technologies can achieve

energy efficiency within offices and homes, we have recently set-

up a small lighting and building control room within our premises.

Do feel free to contact our team for a visit. Energy efficiency is a

key growth driver, and green buildings are important in optimizing

our energy use. ABB has a lot to offer for energy and process

efficiency.

ABB is also identifying new growth opportunities, and many of

you may be aware of the division realignment for our automation

businesses at the beginning of 2010. It has allowed us to focus

intensely on businesses with similar technologies, channels to

market, and service models. These changes will enable us to

bring our total offering to our customers more easily, and again,

reflects our ambition to be more responsive to market needs.

We value our customers, channel partners and various

stakeholders, and as ABB achieves sustainable growth, we

also want our stakeholders to grow together with us. Let’s strive

further and see what we can accomplish for what I think will be a

rewarding 2010.

strong and agile leader. I am appreciative

of our customers who have put their

faith in us. Many of us are in late-cycle

businesses, and we will not sense the

economic recovery as quickly. While we

strive to achieve better results for the

remaining year, let us take time to build a

stronger better relationship, and look for

opportunities to improve the way we do

business.

Gearing for sustainable growth

The economy seems to be in a recovery

phase. While this is something to be

hopeful about, I think we have learnt at the

start of the recession that we cannot be

waiting for economic growth to return. We

have been acting to create growth, and

looking for ways to improve our market

approach.

ABB has always been leading in

technology, and we are aligning our

innovations with key growth drivers, like

climate change and industrial productivity.

A number of products targeted to specific

opportunities, like solar inverters, energy-

management software, SVC Light for

smart grid applications, and a new robot

tailored to discrete manufacturing have

been launched. Our highly experienced

engineers are also lending their expertise

to the service market, and can provide

greater support to ABB’s products and

systems. Targeting both organic and

inorganic growth, ABB has also made

three acquisitions this year to fill some

gaps in our offering.

In Singapore, we also made several bold

decisions during a challenging economic

environment. We have refurbished our low

voltage systems workshop and customer

center, to improve operations and better

showcase our portfolio. We are also

looking forward to the setup of a Robotics

Application Center by the third quarter, to

support the needs of emerging markets,

and specialized high-end manufacturing

industries. We’ve increased our focus

on customer service, and aim to be

a company that our customers enjoy

working with.

Globally, ABB has created a centralized

marketing and customer solutions unit

that will help us cultivate a culture and

commitment to serving our customers

better, help consolidate our efforts in key

vertical markets, and seek further growth in

emerging economies.

We are excited about possible business

85 customers from industry segments like oil and gas, petrochemicals, shipyard, building and construction, power, electronics, food and beverage, transportation, pharmaceuticals, and environmental management attended the full-day service seminar held at ABB’s customer center at Ayer Rajah Crescent.

Sebastian Chia, ABB’s service manager for low voltage products, delivered the welcome address. He said that the session is aimed at helping our customers make an evaluation of what services are needed, or must be practiced, in order to enhance the value of service to business, and help

The key seminar topic for the day was “Reliability, availability, maintainability and safety issues with low voltage switchgear and motor control center”.

David Stonebridge, from ABB in Australia, and Gunnar Zank, from ABB in Singapore addressed actual issues with low-voltage switchgears that will impact plant personnel in different ways. Besides sharing on the problems, David

also shared on solutions to end-users and project design engineers.

To have a better understanding of ABB’s capabilities, attendees were also brought to the drives service, medium-voltage assembly, and the low-voltage systems workshops.

Besides increasing the awareness of problems that may occur as a result of insufficient service and maintenance, attendees also learnt about areas relevant to their work, like energy efficiency applications and case studies, and arc flash prevention.

The current grid infrastructure cannot provide fast-charging options, and ABB’s prototypes of charging points for electric vehicles can be part of a smart grid infrastructure that can support a higher adoption of electric cars without destabilizing the power grid.

Besides showcasing ABB’s products, solutions and services to the Brunei market, the event provided a platform for networking amongst key stakeholders. Customers had the opportunity to develop an indepth understanding of some of ABB’s leading technologies via the technical seminars held by ABB’s speakers from Singapore, Malaysia and China. Attendees included contractors, consultants, end-users and utility providers.

During the opening ceremony, the Market Manager for ABB in Brunei,

and technological achievements in various industries. He also shared about ABB’s energy efficient technologies and renewable energy portfolio.

There was also an exhibition of featured products and sample displays of electrical wiring accessories, the ComfortTouch and priOn, arc guard systems, motor and Relion protection relays, solutions on power generation and ABB’s power management system (ENMC and substation automation system).

After the event, attendees were interested to know more about ABB’s control systems, instrumentation, low-voltage switchgears and transformers.

The upgrading project which began in April 2009 takes place in three phases and is expected to be completed by middle of 2011. SPH continually improves their print products and facilities, to provide faster, brighter and better newspaper prints.

Case study

Jura Cement, Switzerland’s second largest cement producer, replaced a 25-year old cascade converter with a variable speed drive from ABB. The ACS 2000, rated at 550 kW, controls the clinker cooler exhaust fan of Jura Cement’s plant in Wildegg, Switzerland.

SVC Light® with Energy Storage

ABB introduces GridGuard overhead switch for Smart Grid distribution systems

ABB has launched SVC Light® (Static Var Compensator) with Energy Storage.

A new distribution class three-phase overhead, gang-operated medium voltage switch for emerging Smart Grid

systems has been introduced to the market.

The new technology combines SVC Light®, with a highly scalable battery storage technology. The Energy Storage can receive and store power from wind turbines and surplus power from the grid. It can take the power delivered on a sunny day from photo-voltaic panels and put it into its high capacity battery bank.Using modern electronics, SVC Light with Energy Storage feeds the grid with exactly the right amount of reactive and active power needed at each instant, independently of one another, and with a minimum of bulky filter arrangements.

The ABB GridGuard switch – the only unit on the market that meets or exceeds both IEEE and ANSI standards – provides investor-owned and public power utilities with easy integration, remote and local operation, and flexible switching capabilities.

With ABB’s GridGuard switch as a line management and restoration tool, utilities can more efficiently maintain their lines and manage and restore power as needed. Utilities using GridGuard should experience higher reliability with fewer interruptions, shorter downtimes and efficient line management. The GridGuard switch also includes maximum safety features for crews during line disconnection, increasing both line crew confidence and productivity.

ABB announced it will provide full engineering, customer service and sales support for this comprehensive switch product offering. The switch is available with a variety of interrupter options, mounting configurations and control mechanisms, including a motor-driven

feature. The GridGuard switch, supported by ABB’s medium voltage facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, also provides no external-arc interruption for line, transformer or cable switching.

First use of robot in Southeast Asia’s wood industry to increase productivity and lower carbon footprint

A wood processing company based in Singapore, Pacific Forest, has improved efficiency and productivity by

200 percent by using ABB’s robots to produce high quality wood products for the building of lifestyle homes and

hotel resorts.

Precise skills and experienced manpower are required to prepare wood needed for Pacific Forest’s clients, which include prestigious hotels in the French Polynesian islands of Bora Bora and Moorea.

Carpentry skills honed by people over several years were transferred to ABB’s multitasking IRB6640 Foundry Robot, by mounting tools on the robot to assist in accurate cutting, machining, drilling and finishing. The robot helped Pacific Forest reduce the amount of work contracted-out, by producing an output equivalent of 20 workers. The IRB6640 can achieve more precision compared to traditional methods, and has helped the company reduce unwanted wood wastage. Precise cutting is also important in managing productivity and costs for high density woods such as Balau and Merbau, which are more expensive and difficult to cut.

Pacific Forest Products is based in Singapore, and has expanded from its humble beginnings in 1988 into a multifaceted business with a sales turnover of S$15 million in 2009. The company’s core activities include the design and building of lifestyle homes, hotel resorts, and the manufacturing and trading of wood products.

Managing Director of Pacific Forest, Jason Chan said, “As part of our Gaia-friendly beliefs, we have looked into ways to reduce our impact on the environment. By reducing the amount of wood work processes being contracted-out, we could reduce the number of truck trips between factories, hence reducing our carbon footprint.”

Jason and his team had researched on the capabilities of the robot, and devised a solution of incorporating a CAD to CAM software to work with the robot. A Computer Aided Design (CAD) to Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software helps to generate the points and path for robot movement, using drawings generated from CAD software. This CAD to CAM conversion significantly reduces programming time. Pacific Forest also developed a breakthrough design of a clamping system for the robot, introducing flexibility and ensuring smooth conversion.

The ABB team helped to train the robotics engineer, and worked very

closely with Pacific Forest to overcome technical difficulties, and gave assistance in programming, to ensure smooth operations.

Besides increasing productivity and lowering Pacific Forest’s carbon footprint, ABB’s robot also helped in saving process costs, and increased the safety standard of the workplace. Dust, wood splinters and noise are fenced in with the robot, allowing engineers to work in a more pleasant environment.

ABB will deliver a second IRB6640 robot in early May 2010, to help Pacific Forest to further increase its productivity. Pacific Forest aims towards full automation in a few years with a total of five robots. As part of the company’s sustainability plan, Pacific Forest is also looking into developing new wood substitute products to replace natural wood.

ABB control technology plugs leaks, improves water quality in Sweden

ABB flowmeters reduce water loss in Riyadh

Utilities and energy company MälarEnergi can now track its entire water supply process, from the water works

via the pumping stations, on to the treatment plant, using ABB’s control and monitoring systems.

Utilities and energy company MälarEnergi can now track its entire water supply process, from the water works via the pumping stations, on to the treatment plant, using ABB’s control and monitoring systems.

MälarEnergi utility provides water solutions to the principal city of Västerås, and the region of Mälardalen. Västerås and its surroundings consume 42 million liters of water every day, year-round. All in all, MälarEnergi pumps water through a 600 km-long supply network.

Riyadh is a sprawling city that stretches over some 536 square kilometers, an area more than five times the size of Paris. About 60 percent of Riyadh’s valuable water supply is lost through leakage in the 10,000 kilometers of

water quality, energy consumption and water losses, ensuring potential profits aren’t poured down the drain. Before the upgrade, MälarEnergi’s water network lost more than 30 percent of its water.MälarEnergi uses a control and monitoring system based on ABB’s versatile and dependable AC800M controller, which helps control losses and even helps improve water quality, explains Göran Vikergård, responsible for the utility’s tap water production.

“Just consider leaks,” says Vikergård. “A 600-km long water-tight seal is almost impossible to achieve, so we always have to live with some leaks. But now that we

pipes that transport water to the city’s 4.5 million population.

The target set by the government-owned National Water Company is to reduce the volume of water and revenues that are lost to leakage to a more sustainable 20 percent.

One of the most important tools to achieve this target is the 900 ABB AquaMaster and WaterMaster flowmeters that measure the flow and pressure of water in the network’s primary pipeline.

ABB flowmeters in Riyadh required a compact, robust and maintenance-free solution that would measure pressure as

well as flow, and transmit the data via the GSM telecommunications network to the National Water Company’s central control room. For locations where connection to the power network was not possible, the flowmeters had to be battery-powered to avoid the high maintenance requirements of flowmeters energized by miniature solar panels.

have new water meters and pressure gauges throughout the whole network, we can locate leaks more quickly and act accordingly. Previously, about one third of the water we produced disappeared, which meant that we could not charge for it. Now our objective is 20 percent.”

“We can also minimize the use of chemicals when we know the exact amount that needs to be added to water to achieve the best quality,” he added. “This not only saves us money, but is obviously good for the environment too.”

Previously, the pumps in the treatment plant were either on or off. Today, they are in action all the time, but output is controlled to match the needs of the pumping process exactly. This not only saves electricity, but because they are subjected to less wear and tear, the pumps require less maintenance, which also saves on costs. MälarEnergi expects to save approximately US$28,000 per pump per year, an investment that should pay for itself in two to three years.

ABB FlowMaster flowmeters are helping the Saudi Arabian capital, Riyadh, to cut leakage in its water distribution network by around 40 percent. The flowmeters were repeatedly selected for their outstanding accuracy and performance.

ABB helps interconnect the Middle East with new super power grid

Phase 1 of the Gulf Interconnection, one the most important transnational infrastructure projects in the Middle

East, recently went online. Upon completion in 2011, this mega-sized pooling of electricity resources will

interconnect the power grids of the six Gulf states – Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates

and Oman. This interconnection will enable Gulf states to use their energy resources more efficiently.

ABB has played a key role throughout phase 1 of the project, which was completed in late 2009 at a cost of around $1.2 billion and is by far the largest of the interconnection’s three phases. Six state-of-the-art ABB transmission substations with gas-insulated switchgear – three in Saudi Arabia and one each in Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar - enable the power to be delivered reliably and safely at 400 kilovolts (kV) to the power systems of all four countries.

ABB has led the innovation and development of GIS (gas insulated switchgear) substations, which is among the most suitable solutions for the harsh desert climate of this part of the Arabian peninsula.

Valued at around $250 million, the ABB solution includes 17 shunt reactors, which stabilize the voltage of the 400 kV cable between Saudi Arabia and the island of Bahrain. Two of the 15 reactors are rated at 300 MVAr and are the most powerful three-phase reactors ever made.

ABB is one of the few companies in the world that has the required experience and resources to deliver a project of this scale on time and to the full satisfaction of the client. Among the challenges that confronted ABB were a lack of construction materials

in the region due to one of the biggest construction booms ever, and unstable ground conditions in Kuwait where the seawater was only 50 cm below the surface. Several roads also had to be widened and reinforced to permit the transport of transformers and reactors, each weighing several hundred tons.

Interconnections of this kind are possible thanks to a number of ABB innovations over the past 50 years. Technologies like HVDC and HVDC Light, FACTS, GIS substations and network management systems enable national and regional power grids to be interconnected and their energy resources to be pooled and traded and used more efficiently.

ABB control systems help capture 12 million tons of carbon dioxide

The importance of educating the next generation of crew

ABB process control systems have successfully managed the world’s first large-scale carbon capture and

storage (CCS) facility since 1996. To date nearly 12 million tons of carbon dioxide have been captured and safely

stored 1,000 meters below the seafloor. More than half of the world’s large-scale CCS facilities are now controlled

by ABB technology.

A competent work force is more productive, operates at reduced risk levels, achieves shorter down times, and

suffers fewer injuries.

Although there are several small-scale CCS projects in the world today, often using different proprietary technologies and operating on a pilot basis, there are only four facilities that capture and store carbon dioxide on a large commercial scale for climate change reasons.

Three of those four facilities are operated by Statoil, the Norwegian-based oil and gas company. ABB, the world’s leading supplier of distributed control systems for energy-intensive industries like oil and gas, is helping Statoil monitor and control the complex process of capturing and safely storing the carbon dioxide at these facilities.

Until the recent global economic crisis, offshore rig construction has been experiencing its largest growth in 20 years, requiring new and skilled employees in ever increasing numbers. The current slowdown is an ideal opportunity to enhance capabilities and develop human resources for the industry.

Systematic crew education is necessary for achieving safe and optimal performance on board today’s advanced vessels, while securing fuel savings during operation, and to ensure safe and reliable maintenance.

The Marine Academy offers training for safety, operation and maintenance of electrical systems. A permanent staff of trainers is responsible for training. In addition, external experts familiar with the various systems and vessel types are engaged to give specialized extension training, depending on the technical level set for the trainees and the objectives of the courses.

The academy offers DNV-certified marine high-voltage safety courses. Standard or tailor-made training on vessel operations with advanced electrical systems, such as electric propulsion and drilling drives are also offered. In addition, the training centre also develops tailor-made training programs together with the operator or owner of the vessels. Such training programs may include training of a specific system installation and configuration, or simulator-based remote control of electric propulsion.

Furnished with a wide range of equipment that is equivalent to installations on board vessels, the academy provides plenty of opportunities for hands-on experience that crew members usually cannot obtain on a working vessel. Experience in handling high-voltage equipment also heightens safety awareness.

When a vessel is out at sea, training can be critical: downtime is measured in

terms of millions of dollars per day, while additional fuel consumption through sub-optimal operation of a power plant can cause higher environmental emissions, and cost an owner dearly.

It was Statoil who developed the world’s first large-scale CCS process in 1996 at the Sleipner oil and gas field in the North Sea. By stripping the carbon dioxide from the natural gas, compressing it and injecting it into a storage reservoir 1,000 meters beneath the seafloor, Statoil was able to meet the market specifications, significantly reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and avoiding considerable cost.

About one million tons of carbon dioxide are captured and stored at Sleipner each year. This amounts to around 12 million tons in all since 1996 – a huge benefit for the environment and a pointer to how global carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced and managed in the coming years.

The COSL936 rig was built by the China Merchants Heavy Industry Company in Shenzhen and the COSL937 rig was built by the Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore Company in Dalian for China Oilfield Services Limited (COSL).

ABB successfully delivers its first FPSO order to MODEC ABB has successfully delivered the E-house and electrical equipment package to MODEC Offshore Production

Systems (Singapore) for an FPSO due for Brazil. The project began in February 2009 and was completed in eight

months. This is the first FPSO application project for ABB in Singapore.

ABB carried out the design, engineering, fabrication, and construction of the complete E-house; comprising of structural and architectural design, HVAC system, fire detection system, carbon dioxide fire suppression system, complete E&I works like cable trays, support system, power and control cabling, and the design and supply of medium voltage and low voltage switchgear. The scope also included the integration of all equipment within the E-house.

An FPSO, or Floating Production, Storage and Offloading vessel, is a type of floating tank system designed to collect oil from a nearby platform, process it, and store it until it is offloaded onto waiting tankers. It is an efficient way of transporting oil in the offshore environment, in cases where long pipelines are not a feasible option.

More FPSOs are planned to be built to cater to Santos basin deep water oil and gas production at offshore Brazil. Singapore accounts for 70% of the global market for FPSO conversions, and 70% of the global market for jack-up rigs.

ABB wins second FPSO order from MODEC

ABB recently received an order for a second E-house for an additional MODEC FPSO. ABB will provide the same scope of supply, including transformers and the project is scheduled to be completed in March 2011.
