Beck/Arnley has had an exciting yearcelebrating the 100th birthday of thebrand. Employees have banded together tosupport local charities including Habitat forHumanity, a residential facility for homelessfamilies and several pet rescues. Therehave also been special employee eventsand a 100th Anniversary Car Sweepstakesfeaturing a custom Scion FR-S that wasgiven away at AAPEX.

Beck Distributing Corp. was founded in1914 in New York City by a man in his 20snamed Irving Beck. He saw a future inaccessories and spare parts formotorcycles, which were starting tobecome popular. When WWI broke out, helanded a contract to supply the U.S. Armywith sidecars, and by the beginning ofWWII, Beck Distributing was established asone of the leading suppliers of motorcycleparts and accessories in the U.S.

In the late 1940s, Beck saw anotheropportunity with the emergence of theimport sports car in the United States.British carmakers were anxious to find U.S.distribution for their parts, so they wentdirectly to the successful motorcycle partsdistributor they had been selling to foryears — Beck Distributing. Beck was nowin the auto parts business.

The next few decades saw rapid

“Look ahead, great times are to come,” saidSteve Forbes, to a roomful of attendees during the new, free General Session Nov. 5at AAPEX, as he kicked off his keynote ad-dress, “The Next Four Years: Navigating theEconomy for Business Growth and Success.”

Forbes is chairman and editor-in-chief ofForbes Media, and continues to lead themost successful business news magazine inAmerica. He also is the author of a newbook, Money: How the Destruction of theDollar Threatens the Global Economy andWhat We Can Do About It.

Forbes’ discussion provided insights intothe nation’s economy, monetary policy andhealth care reform, but first he highlightedthe results of the Nov. 4 elections and thepositive things to come in the high technol-ogy sector, and in the areas of immigrationreform, health insurance and tax reform as aresult of the GOP majority in both the Houseof Representatives and the Senate.

In addressing the economy, Forbes saidthat “we can’t seem to get out of secondgear,” and that this “new abnormal” statethat we’re in is the result of policy mistakesthat hopefully will be corrected in the nextfew years.

Next up, Forbes expressed his thoughts

on the nation’s monetary policy, asking“How do we get a higher standard of liv-ing? We need to buy, sell, specialize andinvest.”

But those transactions are best optimizedwhen money has a fixed value. It’s harder todo commerce and invest in the future whenthe value of money is in a constant state offlux. The malaise created by unstable moneyafflicts not only the economy, but all of soci-ety, and creates chaos around the world.Those sentiments tie into Forbes’ new book,where he expresses that money is not only a

yardstick of value, but also a vital facilitatorof social trust. The destruction of money is akey reason for the recent rise of political polarization and unrest, he said.

He also stressed the need for a simplifica-tion of the tax code, which would lead todecreased taxes across the board, and hisrecommendation of a flat tax proposal

would remove tax barriers that impede economic growth.

On the topic of health care, Forbes notedthat while there is a huge expense, uncer-tainty and turbulence surrounding it, we willsee a whole new system emerging with fan-tastic results. Consumers can expect to seepositive changes in health care delivery, tech-nological advancements and huge break-throughs in the ability to combat diseases.

Throughout his tenure, Forbes’ keen abil-ity to provide economic insights on the bigissues of the day has been trusted by busi-

ness leaders around the world. In sheddingsimilar light on today’s big issues, the audi-ence benefitted from his wisdom that posi-tive things start through the realization thatwe need to do things differently. “The bot-tom line is, we need to look ahead becausethe future is bright and great things are tocome,” he said.

“How do we get a higher standard of living? We need to buy, sell, specialize and invest.”

The rotating electrical campaign is the second in a series of category-specific campaigns designed to educate technicians, shopowners, service writers and other industry repair professionals onthe importance of running diagnostics and the value of installingquality premium parts. The campaign is funded and sponsored byAASA member suppliers: ACDelco, BBB Industries, CARDONE Industries, DENSO, Motorcar Parts, Remy International and RobertBosch.

The new campaign, created by Montgomery Advertising (MontAd), kicked off at AAPEX and will run through 2015. In addition to the dedicated micro website and the AAPEX exhibit,the Know Your Parts rotating electrical campaign will include afully mobile optimized site, an app designed specifically for serviceprofessionals and a strong social component.

The Know Your Parts rotating electrical micro site featuresunique articles, graphics and videos as well as informative contentfrom sponsor companies. All of the content educates the repairprofessional audience on the importance of thorough diagnosticsin order to prevent “comebacks” and to maximize bay time at independent shops.

Last year, the Aftermarket Auto Parts Alliance announced that it was bringing itsnational convention to Las Vegas to runconcurrently with the AAPEX and SEMAshows in 2015. In anticipation of thatevent, the Alliance conducted a trial walk-through of the program at this year’sshows.

“The opportunity for our customers tointeract with our supplier channel partnersat these two shows is a powerful opportu-nity for both of them,” said John R. Wash-bish, president and CEO of the Alliance.“Even with a crew like ours it’s a dauntingtask to bring 3,000 techs to the shows in2015. We feel that we have a great plan,but it occurred to us that a trial run with asmall group would be prudent.”

To that end, the Alliance hosted owners

and technicians from 30 shops around thecountry on Thursday, Nov. 6 at AAPEX andFriday, Nov. 7 at SEMA. The idea is to testand refine the process to optimize thenumber of visits and maximize the infor-mation exchange.

“It is a fantastic opportunity to learn directly from the source,” said Lee Ostendorf, owner of Tiremaxx Service Centers in Alexandria, MN. Attending thewalkthrough with his son and partner Tyler,he went on to say, “And it’s really incredi-ble how eager manufacturers are to hearabout our experiences with their products.It really closes the loop for both of us.”

The Alliance’s 2015 convention, dubbed“Aftermarket Jackpot,” will be held at theMirage Hotel & Resort, Nov. 4-7, 2015. TheAlliance is planning to have more than

3,000 jobbers and technicians in atten-dance who will attend both AAPEX andSEMA in addition to a variety of eventshosted by the group.

Taking office immediately following the close of AAPEX on Nov.6 was AWDA’s new Chairman Corey Bartlett, MAAP, president, Automotive Parts Headquarters in St. Cloud, Minn. Bartlett suc-ceeds J. Richard Fairbanks Jr., Orleans Auto Supply, Hyannis, Mass.,who led the association through the previous 12 months and remains on the council as immediate past chairman.

A three-person panel discussed key issues relating to “AftermarketAccess to OEM Education Resources” in a one-hour session duringthe NASTF Fall 2014 General Meeting, Wednesday, Nov. 5 duringAAPEX. Jill Saunders of Toyota, Rob Morrell of WORLDPAC and BillMoss of EuroService Automotive engaged with panel moderatorSkip Potter of NASTF seeking a solution to a mismatch betweeninconsistent OEM resources and technician expectations.

Training resources provided by automakers for their franchisedealer technicians are laid out in a strictly defined and structuredlearning “roadmap,” said Saunders, a product engineer for ToyotaMotor Sales, USA and currently responsible for the developmentand support of the Techstream Diagnostic Scantool for all of NorthAmerica and the U.S. Territories.

Moss, owner of a four-bay service shop, EuroService Automotive, in Warrenton, Va., and currently serving on the boardsof directors for both NASTF and the Automotive Service Associa-tion, countered that “independent technicians mostly consume education as a solution-based” event.

“This disconnect is frustrating both the OEMs, who are alreadyspending money to comply with laws and agreements, and techni-cians, who are unsuccessful in their search of specific training top-ics,” explained Potter, executive director of NASTF.

Morrell, director of training for WORLDPAC since 2001 and currently serving as the independent co-chair for the NASTF Education Committee added, “Third-party trainers like us cangreatly improve the quality and consistency of our training pro-grams if we have access to existing OEM resources.”

Charlie Gorman, one of the founding leaders of NASTF pointedout that the original intent of EPA service information laws was forOEM education resources to flow through these third-party after-market trainers, not necessarily direct-to-tech delivery.

“But very few (OEM) licensing agreements are available to us,”Morrell continued. “They (OEMs) could make money from us.”

Moss acknowledged that it is not the automaker’s responsibilityto train the independent technician but, he said, “It’s valuable forus to have access (to OEM education resources) both directly from

the OEM website and through our traditional aftermarket trainers.”Saunders represents one of a growing number of OEMs who

view independent service centers outside their franchise system(both aftermarket and other dealer franchises) as an opportunityto supplement the serviceability of their brand as aging vehiclesoutgrow the warranty period, transfer to second and third ownersand move outside the convenient geographic reach of their franchise system. “It’s important for the Toyota brand to work withindependents,” she said.

Looking ahead toward reducing the frustration shared by OEMsand technicians over aftermarket access to OEM education re-sources, the panel agreed that NASTF has a role to play. “I thinkwe’ve made a case today that the NASTF Education Committee’seffort to write a best practice document should help,” said Morrell.

Moss added, “It’s the technician’s responsibility to the customerto be service-ready and that includes an obligation to stay currentthrough continuing education. It’s up to us shop owners to makesure that happens.”

The NASTF Fall 2014 General Meeting continued with a secondfeatured-session, “Vehicle Diagnostics and Programming Under theMOU,” presented by Steve Douglas, senior director for Environmen-tal Affairs at the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. “It’s actuallya great time to be in the automotive industry,” he said, noting theprogress into more efficient vehicles and expansion of diagnosticservice technology onto off-the-shelf laptop computers connected tovehicles through improved versions of the J-2534 “black box.”

NASTF’s Fall meeting wrapped up with reports by all six com-mittees, led off by Claude Hensley, co-chair of the Vehicle SecurityCommittee, revealing new initiatives by NASTF to keep the VehicleSecurity Professional Registry safe from abuse and misuse.

Interest in the growing e-tailing trend in the auto care industrywas evident at AAPEX 2014, as nearly 100 industry professionalsattended “Distribution in the Age of E-Tailing,” a session in theAAPEXedu education program.

With several United States Marines in at-tendance, Federated CEO Rusty Bishop pre-sented a check in the amount of $120,000to David Adamson, operations chief for theMarine Toys for Tots Foundation, during theFederated reception held Nov. 4 at AAPEX.

“While our AAPEX reception is time tocelebrate and say thank you to our mem-bers and suppliers, it is also time to remindeveryone that there is still plenty of workto do to collect toys and donations for Toysfor Tots,” said Bishop.

Flanked by several U.S. Marines, Adam-son presented a special award to Bishop inrecognition of Federated’s support of theToys for Tots mission during the Nov. 4 reception.

“It was very gratifying to receive specialrecognition from this great organization forthe hard work and generosity of Federated

members and supplier partners. Together, Iknow they will once again make this holi-day season brighter for those less fortu-nate,” said Bishop.

Adamson also was on-hand throughoutAAPEX to share information about Toys forTots with attendees, as well as collect donations for the worthy organization.

The United States Marine 2nd Battalion23rd Marine color guard participated inAAPEX opening ceremony festivities.

The Car Care Council Women’s Board announced Jodi Kramer, vice president, United Marketing Inc., as the 11th annual Auto CareWoman of the Year. Bogi Lateiner, owner, 180 Degrees Automotive Inc., has been named the Female Shop Owner of the Year, whileKathy Jorge, Delphi Product and Service Solutions, has been selected as this year’s Auto Care Woman of Excellence. The announcementwas made at the 2014 Women’s Board reception Nov. 4 at AAPEX.

The Women of the Year awards are administered by the Women’s Board Career and Leadership Committee. The Woman of the Year ischosen based on her significant leadership and contribution to the auto care community throughout her career. Female Service ShopOwner of the Year is given to an outstanding woman who has a proven record of excellence in the automotive service industry, and theWoman of Excellence is the Women’s Board associate who has provided recent outstanding contributions to the auto care industry.

Auto Care Woman of the YearJodi Kramer has been active in the industry for more than 25 years. After receiving herB.S. from Indiana State University, she entered the family business at United Marketing,and revived a sluggish automotive section for many major grocery and drug chains suchas Rite Aid, CVS and SuperValu.

She is also the founder of SHE4Life, a brand designed to help breast cancer patientsand their families survive the financial, physical and mental burdens that accompany thediagnosis. A portion of the proceeds go directly to regional or local agencies and SHE4Lifeholds multiple successful events during the year.

She also volunteers countless hours with Cancer Services in the Indiana area, and hasbeen an active Women’s Board associate since 2011.

MEMA and AASA have a long history ofpartnering with federal enforcement agen-cies such as the Federal Bureau of Investi-gation (FBI), Customs and BorderProtection and the Department of Home-land Security to protect the intellectualproperty rights of automotive aftermarketsuppliers and consumers from counterfeitmotor vehicle parts. Association effortshave included education of enforcementagencies on the flow of motor vehicle partsand the markings that distinguish genuineparts.

This partnership was in full force duringAAPEX 2014. The National IntellectualProperty Rights Coordination Center (IPR

Center) was an exhibitor at the event toshowcase tools suppliers can use to pre-vent parts counterfeiting, and enforcementagents were available to answer questionsor investigate complaints about counterfeitgoods from AAPEX exhibiting companies.The Immigration and Customs Enforcementalso introduced its public service announcement (PSA) about the safety hazards that counterfeit parts pose to thepublic during AAPEX.

During AAPEX, MEMA and AASAworked with the IPR Center to close an exhibit that was displaying counterfeitgrills and airbags. The exhibit was identi-fied by an intellectual property investigator

for Hyundai, who saw the counterfeitairbag while touring the AAPEX show floor.The Hyundai representative notified the IPRCenter, which then notified the MEMA in-tellectual property team on the show floor.

Further investigations at the exhibit revealed counterfeit Hyundai, Toyota andHonda airbags and grills on display. FBIagents seized the goods and the exhibitwas immediately shut down by AAPEXShow Management.

MEMA and AASA will continue to develop and maintain these important relationships in order to help maintain theintegrity of member company brands andthe safety of the motoring public.
