A year on our farm

Our farm

- Total area; 75 hectares; about 30 hectares food- and starch potatoes and rest 35 hectares are cereals (wheat, oats, barley…)

- 5 tractors, a planting machine (4-rows), a lifting combine (2 rows), a combine harvester and several working mashines.

- Laborforce; my son and me. Temporarily my brother too.

The following year bigins in the former autumn

• October- December– Autumn working; plowing et cetera

– Rough plannings for next season; baced on soil analysis and made by computer program

-> the shopping of fertilisers, pesticide and so on based on bookkeeping

January - March• The yield of the last

year and the seed for the season will be classified

• The transport forward

May - June• On an average we start to plant potatoes on

the 10. of May (ending about in the end of May. In the same time fertiliser goes to the soil.

• A day before planting we cultivate the field up to 15 cm

Hurry continues

• Soon after planting we shape the rows. About 3 weeks after planting starts the sparying of weeds. The spaying ends before the Midsummer week. Water usage is 200 l/hectare

July - August

• About the 10 of Jyly begins the spraying of the potatoe blight (potatoes are about 30 cm high). We have to do this 3-5 times during a season (400 l/hectare water and about 1l pesticide)

• In many years we get the first frost in the first week in August; after that we need not spray any more.

Sebtember-(October)The lifting of potatoes begins about 20.8. by lifting of seed

• Liftingmachine takes 2 rows at one time, speed is about 5-7 km/h, the output in good conditions is about 1 ha/ 2 h by 3 persons. Normally the lifting is over in September.

Potatoes are transported in boxes to the storage
