It has been a year unlike any other. Thanks to the efforts of so many, we at Trinity Englishengaged our lives with the lives of so many other people. This included both members andneighbors across our city. We worked on community among us who are formally part of Trin-ity and we worked on community among those who share our city with us. More than 1,000 visits to members and hundreds of cards and phone calls happened over the year. Hundreds of worship opportunities as well as casual conversations. More than 5,000 people in our city –members and visitors – found Trinity to be a place of food and comfort [sort of has a Biblicalring to it, doesn’t it?] This was possible because of everyone here – members, staff, friends andvisitors – all of us together shared our lives with each other, because we worked together inJesus’s name for this Gospel business. We shared hopes and prayers, offerings and our lives inextraordinary ways.

And then March happened. And it has turned out to be a remarkable end to this year of Trin-ity English. Our ministry has shifted and morphed. Easter through a video camera? The weight of Good Friday felt particularly heavy this year. Many things [including the Easter Gospel] took on a new, previously unknown meaning. Many of the strengths of Trinity, not the least of which include your prayers, your good cheer and your support of this place – in-cluding through your offerings – has carried us through to a “new normal.”

You can almost say that our year really ended mid-March and a new something began at thattime. We all have this sense that while we really don’t know what the coming year will look like, we know it, too, will be a year unlike any other. But the things that made Trinity strong in this past year, our prayers, our commitment to each other, our commitment to our city, ourgenerosity and our willingness to work at embodying the Gospel, will make us strong in theyears to come. Thank you for being part of this past year. And please watch for ways to be partof Trinity’s ministry in the year ahead of us. Let’s continue to build on the new ways we’ve been connected even as we look forward to being physically connected in the months ahead. Let’s look forward to a new year, unlike any other.

Peace to you.

E3 participated in some fun faith-based activities this year including: Stained Glass, Old Testament Drama, Liturgical Movement, Symbols of Christianity, New Testa-ment Drama, and Seeds of Faith.

Junior Choir members and adults traveled to Frankenmuth, MI, in February. There, the choir enjoyed fun activities and sang for worship at Grace Lutheran Church, Vassar, MI. Shining Lights Fine Arts Program had 21 students participate in the annual music, drama, and movement camp. Under the direction of Evan Ander-son and Caleb Novell, the week-long camp culminated with the perfor-mance of a children’s musical in the theater.

Christians in Action or CIA was of-fered Sunday at 10am on a monthly basis as an opportunity for fami-lies and people of all ages to come together to work on a service project and spend time together. Around 20 people a month gave an hour of their time to support either a ministry of the church or a community organi-zation. In 2019/2020 our projects in-cluded decorating the flower ministry delivery cans, making toys and treats for the Allen County SPCA, packing dignity bags for veterans and literacy bags for kids, tying quilts, and even making no sew scarves for our Study Connection kids and neighbors in need.

Date Night with a Purpose was formed as a small group ministry. It gives those who want a night out an op-portunity to socialize with other folks in the congregation and to support a community organization or TELC ministry. In 2020, the group had a great time dining together dining and supported Fostering Hope for Children and Parkview Health’s Women and Children’s Outreach Programs. It was a great way to con-nect with people at TELC and share God’s love with those in need.

SHARING GIFTS

In June, members of Trinity’s Chancel Choir joined with choir members from Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Dublin, OH, to tour together as one choir Ireland, Wales, and England. During their travels, the combined choir performed concerts at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin; Liverpool Cathedral, Liverpool; Southwark Cathedral, London; the singers also had a private evening workshop with composer Andrew Carter at St. Olave’s Church, York.

In November, during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, our staff was able to honor the staffs of some of our invaluable agency partners to drop off small gifts and to pray with them as a way to thank them for all they do.

Fright Night: Trinity’s first time to participate in the downtown family-friendly pre-Halloween event. Nearly 200 people stopped by to enjoy “Witches’ Brew” on the front lawn with Maggie and Erin or to walk through Wagenhals where our own Evan Anderson played “spooky music” on the theatre organ.

Remembrances and Celebrations was a special choral/orchestral program of Faure’s Requiem and various anthems offered to reflect on the lives of those who have gone before us and to celebrate the gift of life and its blessings. A free-will offering raised over $1,200 to assist The Rescue Mission with burial expenses for those of little means.

Hosted renowned organist, Wilma Jensen, for a concert in May

Members of the Youth Choir and adult chaperones traveled to southern Ohio in July, where students enjoyed the sights of Cincin-nati, sang for worship at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Cold Spring, KY, and took a walking tour of Wittenberg University.

All participants of Trinity Ringers traveled to Louisville, KY in early March for a handbell festival. The players took in various workshops related to techniques, and they were among over 300 ringers who played together.

Looking ahead to the conclusion of my full-time pastoral ministry at Trinity, I imagined a busy round of leave-taking and loose end tying. None of us ever dreamed that we would spend months in physical separation from one another. Who knew our faith practices could become so practical and flexible. Yet, adjust, social distance, and reframe is what faith and life are about these days and likely to continue.

As I step aside from my role as an (associate) pastor at Trinity, I am mindful of the hundreds of persons who have blessed life and minis-try across the years. I recall with fondness the many staff colleagues who brought their gifts and foibles to the table; so many talented and devoted individuals. I give thanks for those leaders and members whose gifts of wisdom, courage, humor, outrage, discernment, and prayer shaped ministry in and through this congregation, communi-ty, and world. I am forever grateful to God to have been called to be part of this holy work and people.

When I arrived at Trinity English in 1984, I was set to work with Sunday Church School, Adult Education—Koinonia & Bible Study groups, Community Services, and Women’s Guild/Women of the ELCA. As I retire, the connectional ministries of Pastoral Care, in-cluding Deaconess Ministry, Eucharistic Ministry, Flower Delivery, Grief Notes/Cards and Journey through Grief booklets, Prayer and Prayer Shawl Ministries, Trinity Meals and a few are areas in which I’ve been blessed to work.

COVID 19 constraints have caused us to reconstruct a phone min-istry and expand the ministry of cards and notes (in which Trinity’s Deaconesses have long been engaged) to include staff and an expan-sive group of volunteers making connections by phone, mail, and on-line with members and friends. A fledgling Small Group ministry has taken on important interconnectional work among ministry areas and people. We envision growth in these relational efforts.

In my nearly 40 years as a pastor, minister of Word and Sacrament, God has reminded me that we humans often fall short in our goals. We disappoint others (and ourselves) by what we do or fail to do. In spite of our shortcomings, as Isaiah assures, “so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11 God continues to work in this merciful way in individual Christians and in communities of faith. We have witnessed a share of shortcomings in our individual and community lives, in this place and in the world. Still God sets us here together with our various gifts and abilities for lively purpose and, indeed, helps us prosper in the things for which God sent us.

Thank you for the grace showered upon me, even as my work with you as pastor and congregation comes to a close. Having rejoiced together in times of rejoicing and wept with one another in times of sorrow, we look forward with great eagerness to see what God will yet accomplish through the good people of Trinity. Peace, joy, and courage in believing.

Together with you in Christ,

Pastor Haller

My nearly two years serving on Trinity’s pastoral staff has been a time of great meaning, many joys, and, in the recent months of pandemic, a sense of unsettledness. As you know, my work at Trinity has been multifaceted: providing pastoral care to those in hospital and nursing facilities; praying and preaching and communing in our sacred times of gathered and remote worship; assisting clergy colleagues, professional staff, and volunteers in serving our wider community. Each of these dimensions of ministry have touched my heart and reinforced my belief and trust that God’s Spirit is working within and through this faith community. One of the preoccupations of my life has been the search for how “church” can truly be an expression of God’s love in the world. Rarely have I seen a congregation take on this search so intentionally and purposefully as Trinity. It has been one of the genuine honors of my life to serve the ministries of Trinity English Lutheran Church. As noted previously, I am looking toward the conclusion of my professional career and in gradual movement toward retirement. But in this time of changed circumstance and community crisis, I am open to wherever the Spirit leads. If I can continue to be helpful to the members and staff of Trinity Church in these difficult days, I will do so in whatever way seems right and appropriate. May God’s blessings be upon you as we move into the future with some trepidation but an even deeper trust in goodness and in grace.

With God’s peace,

Pastor Terry Anderson

Pursuant to the Constitution of Trinity English Lutheran Church, the Church Council is charged with the general oversight of the life of the congregation, and in particular its worship life, for the proclamation of the Gospel and in accordance with the Word of God and the faith and practice of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. We review and vote on the bud-get, receive reports from the pastors and staff, and address various issues that we, as a Church face. In addition, and when time permits, we have discussed “Growing Young” by Kara Powell, Jake Mulder and Brad Griffin in an effort to gain insight in leading Trinity forward.

Council meets on a monthly basis, the second Monday of the month from 5:30 until 7:00 (or later). As this occurs during the dinner hour, this year we instituted a new practice wherein Council members prepare and bring dinner for the other mem-bers. In addition to enjoying a delicious meal, our meetings have become more convivial.

Current members of Council are:Pastor Erdos Trina Gould Liggett Christine Baron David Lindquist Kelly Lary Dave Menge Kimberly Sank Mallory Shupe Aaron Brune Gale Eller Jeff Goshert Aaron Dohring Phyllis Thimpson Dave Fisher Debbie Woodroof Darlene Yarnelle Turner Morsches Laura Bohnke

Christine Baron and Kimberly Sank are completing their second 3 year term and I want to thank them for their contributions and dedication to Council. Christine has served as Secretary for six years and has done an excellent job of recording the min-utes of our meeting. In addition, she participates in Christians in Action. Kimberly has served on the House Committee as well as Hospitality. She has been integral in the program “Wine and Wisdom.” Thank you Christine and Kimberly!

Council has approved the following slate for three year terms:David Lindquist, Kelly Lary, Dave Menge, Mallory Shupe, Cathy Waggoner and Barry Jackisch. Cathy and Barry will be new to Council and we welcome them.

Peace,

Trina Gould LiggettChair of the Council and Vice President of the Congregation
