A Word from Our Pastor

“He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ.”

Colossians 1:28

W hen Barack Obama ascended to the top of the nation’s political mountain in 2008 by becoming the first African American and one of the youngest-ever presidents, he vowed

loudly and clearly to bring something to America: Change. One of his first acts as President was to bail out failing banks and secure the struggling auto industry by way of an economic stimulus package. He also spent most of his first year working to reform the healthcare industry, to ensure that all Americans would have some form of coverage. Change had come to America, but many people were not prepared for, or even excited about, the changes that were being instituted. Even some of the President’s most ardent supporters spoke out vehemently against his policy changes, leaving his administration scrambling to reassure a fickle public that the changes were necessary for the economic vitality of the country. When leaders spoke of change, people were excited; but when it came time to implement change the people were reluctant. Central finds itself in a place similar to this country a decade ago: in need of change. Not because our orders or mission has changed, and certainly not because our people are no longer capable of fulfilling God’s call; we remain poised to be as effective as ever in making disciples. But as our world changes, so does the church in order to reach the changing world. A church willing to change reflects growth and health. The Church is not a static organization but a dynamic community of believers. Stagnation means death. More than 200 churches close their doors every week and many of them do so because they refuse to recognize the need for change. There are a number of strategic ways that Central can modify its methods without changing its core identity and message. We can reach our community by partnering with other community organizations to double or triple our resources and reach. For example, in 2017 rather than our usual Backpack Drive, we partnered with other local groups to give out backpacks and school resources. In so doing, we were able to touch more students than we ever could have alone. We can engage new leaders and participants by changing how we lead and how participation in ministry is required. We can get more people involved by simply altering how we do certain things: meetings objectives and tasks can be communicated by email correspondence, decisions can be made by phone, and volunteers can be called to small projects rather than committees. Our 175th Anniversary Committee and Church Picnic Planning Committee were intergenerational groups of servants who understood that busy schedules were not a barrier for creativity and getting things accomplished. There are people who are willing to serve but don’t always have the time to come to church and attend hours long meetings. Change means we adapt so that they can contribute to the life of Central. But we must be careful not to implement change for its own sake. A number of churches in Central’s position have been torn apart by differing groups who either did not feel a need to change or pushed for change at a pace that threatened and made others feel uncomfortable. The Spirit of God must direct and the need to change must be a felt need of the many and not just a desire of the few. I pray that God would direct Central in her quest for change. We are moving forward in 2018!

Meeting Days and Times—Weekdays as arranged

A bundant Life Classes are an important part of Christian education at CBC. The 9 week course is a prerequisite for membership, and

seeks to ensure that ever member of Central understands the gospel and has put their faith in Jesus with a desire to serve the Lord.

Adult Sunday School (9:45-10:45AM)

The 2017 Adult Sunday school year was consumed with our in-depth study of the Gospel of Luke. Teachers and

attendees gained a new appreciation for Luke’s serious concern for the poor and the marginalized. The final few Sundays of the year were filled with some individually chosen topics.

rd Sundays of the month during the

Worship Service in the Parlor and Upper Gymnasium from 11:15 am to 12:15 pm. The students learned WHO GOD IS and WHO THEY ARE IN CHRIST through challenging and creative Biblical teaching with Randy Frazee’s "Believe" curriculum where the students take a journey through 10 key beliefs, practices and virtues of Christian faith, which will guide them on how to think, act and be more like Jesus. We had two classes: one for those 6 to 11 years old & another for those who were 12 to 18 years old. During this year, GOD blessed us with two dynamic teams of teachers who taught the Bible through the creative/visual arts, practical study, and action/service. In addition, the special events we hosted have resulted in increased parent/guardian participation. We were blessed with an intern, Ms. Pamela Mitchell, from Wake Forest Seminary in North Carolina; she reached out into the CBC community to recruit students and taught the Arts & Craft classes during Vacation Bible School which was held in the evenings this past July. A good group of volunteers from CBC helped with meals, classes, and great fun at VBS this year! Thank YOU and we look forward to what GOD will do in 2018!! SS greatly appreciates the Missions Committee for their support in sending SS students to summer camp at Camp Pinnacle!!! The appealing aspects of this ministry are:

• Fun & interactive classes/format and time for fellowship,

• Convenient meeting time while parents are in the church service,

• An opportunity for students to apply for Summer Camp scholarships sponsored by the Missions Committee, and

These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 6:6-7

• Opportunities for students to invite friends so that they, too, can learn about our SAVIOR.

After the conclusion of the 2016-17 school year, M. Esther Romero stepped down as the Director of Children’s Sunday School. She remained on the teaching staff. Pastor Robert Casteline took over as the Director. In preparation for the 2017-18 school year, Robert began to personally reach out to individual members of the congregation to work as assistants, an opportunity to see if Children’s Sunday school was a ministry fit for them. With the number of teachers that came on, two options were before the department: have three Sundays of teaching with two larger classes or have two Sundays of teaching with three classes. Because of our younger group being such a large class, it was determined that instead of having two classes, Sunday school would expand to three classes on two Sundays. Classes were now broken down into grades 1-2, 3-5 and 6+. CSS changed the teaching material to those provided by Urban Ministries, Inc. This company is in-line without doctrinal beliefs, but the material is crafted by African-Americans living in an urban area. The books and lessons are more inclusive in their representation of people of color and have lessons which consider urban ministry first, rather that suburban ministry. UMI’s focus on community engagement is also beneficial.

M. Esther Romero, Administrator URBACAD is a contraction for URBan ACADemy, a training program for leadership development in local urban churches. URBACAD programs operate within local urban churches, or as a joint effort of city churches to provide opportunities for committed disciples of Jesus Christ to be equipped to lead others into vital discipleship as well. The Life of Christ, Based on Matthew's Gospel, is a six-part series of studies which engage the head, the heart, and the "hands" of the disciple. The workbooks use a simple programmed-instruction approach, with continual review and reinforcement of knowledge and structure. These workbooks serve as a virtual "teacher," presenting essential truths about the Bible, theology, Bible background, and practical use of Bible truths in daily living and church leadership.

A s the Scripture says “ Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile —

the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on Him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” Romans 10:11-15. Two members of the congregation joined the Committee, Cliff Jean-Michel and Jean Thelusme. The Missions Committee agreed to sponsor a new missionary. His name is Herod Guillomettre, Missions Door, Haiti. Pastor Guillomettre hosted the CBC team that went to Haiti in 2016. The team was so impressed with the work he was doing, that the Committee agreed to offer him some support. On April 22, 2017, four people attended the Scripture Union event. The Missions Committee proudly provided Chazz Briggs with financial support for his second year at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Also, Mark Marchak was given some support to cover the loss of contributors to his missionary project. On July 5, 2017, Matt Paschall and his family, came to CBC to give the congregation an update on their missionary life in Budapest, Hungary. That was followed by an informative Q&A session. It turned out to a wonderful evening of fellowship. The CBC Missions Committee sponsored a Short Term Missions trip to Rochester, NY, during the period of August 19 - 24, 2017. Our missionaries in Rochester,

Sharing the gospel, in all of its facets, to all who will listen.

And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. Romans 1:6

Marvin and Denise Robinson, assisted us in making it an enlightening experience. It provided a good example of the work being done by our urban missionaries. On December 20, 2017, some members of the Committee assisted one of our urban missionaries, Dale Belli, in distributing Christmas gifts to People With Aids(PWA) at the Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center. Other Christmas activities included partnering with the Global Bag Ladies in Kenya and Gospel for Asia Gift Catalogs. End of the year financial support was given to a few of our missionaries: Luis Matute, Panama - children’s ministry; Dale Belli, New York City - PWA project; Marvin Robinson, Rochester - car repair; Raymond Ramos, Brooklyn, RHOW - Hurricane in Puerto Rico. George and Linda Renner retired in 2017. They were our missionaries in Kenya. We want to thank them for their outstanding efforts in the missionary field. Paul D. Levell “For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the Gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:17-18.

Mission Statement: To be spiritually in a position where we can be sensitive to the needs of an individual that comes forward during an Altar Call and follow up with the appropriate action so that ultimately, the individual will be in the position to bear much good fruit for the Kingdom of God. Immediate Mission: To bridge the gap (or “hold the hand” of an individual) between the time the individual comes forward during an Altar Call, to the time the individual begins the Abundant Life Course, thus preventing the individual from “falling through the cracks. GOALS FOR 2018 Continue Partnering with Samaritan’s Heart Ministry

• Talk and pray with Samaritan’s Heart’s contact

• Foster a relationship with those contacts, as necessary, and encourage their growth of the faith and relationship with the Lord.

The result of this partnership would mean:

• More direct communication from our church with our brothers and sisters in Christ that are going

• through a challenging period in their lives

Members: Kimberly Casteline, Sarah Clark, Stacey Holman, Christine Lewis, Sonya Tonge, Rosilyn Wright The Health Ministry, with God’s help, provides the information and recommendations needed to maintain overall good health and includes heightening the awareness of Central Baptist Church’s congregation and its surrounding community regarding “God’s Temple: Our Body.” 1 Cor 6:19-20. The Health Ministry’s Programs, focus on trusting in Christ to strengthen us spiritually, physically, and mentally as we respect and honor His Temple: Our Bodies, and Love the Lord with our total personality; that is with our heart, our will and our mind. Meeting times: The Health Ministry has no meeting set schedule. Meetings are called and arranged as needed. ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF 2017 Culinary/Social—Continues to have an impact on Sip and Chat after church fellowship hour with healthy food choices. GOALS FOR 2018 Continue the Hypertension Monitoring Program.

The practitioners/monitoring unit will remain available for those interested in keeping tabs on their blood pressure numbers. This program came through the Bronx Health Reach Organization and we are eager to provide this free service in 2018. The Culinary/Social Ministry will be hosting a Culinary All Ministries Fair in 2018. This Fair will take place after a service in the 2

nd Quarter.

The Health Ministry is introducing a new support program in January 2018. This support group will meet once a week. It will address the needs of people facing the daily challenges of any or all addictions. The emphasis of this program is to support, encourage and bond members. This program will be comprehensive, compassionate, and dedicated to those truly seeking to change their lifestyles and addictions. We are looking forward to providing this service to our congregation and community. We are planning a comprehensive workshop on Diabetes Management: Know Your Risks on Saturday, September 29, 2018. All aspects on the various parts of the body and different organs that can be impacted by Diabetes will be addressed. We look forward to providing this information to our congregation and community. We have found that those who join The Health Ministry benefit from:

• The challenges, discipline and commitment that are required.

• People seriously considering a mindset change regarding God’s Word (His Temple/Our Bodies); their health and wellness.

• Adopting a healthier lifestyle requires discipline, moderation and self control.

• Setting goals and staying focused, which are the keys to improve health.

Liturgical Dance Ministry

Oversight

Pastor Robert Casteline

Chairpersons Coral Aubert and Rhonda Marshall Leneau

A s a Liturgical Dance ministry and worship team, our mission is to praise God through dance. We explore a variety of creative movements with the

hope to inspire and impact the hearts of others, as we glorify our Father in Heaven. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 In Keeping with the Great Commission, the Liturgical Dance Ministry intends to use the words of scripture, prayer, gospel, classical and other contemporary spirit filled music to teach our dance members. The use of these resources and sources as impetus to drive us to reach out to all Christians and non-Christians through dance. This message is even understood by the youth. Praise the Lord!

achieve their dreams through learning the importance of teamwork, hard work, diligence, commitment, reliability. We also boost their confidence, meet new people and make new friends. We invite you to come out and join us. In the past year,

• We have maintained 70 young people in the program including the two girl basketball teams.

• We played in 18 different tournaments in Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and New Jersey.

• Standing 2017 and the different Christian principles we are teaching to each team

High School Boys team had a fair year. They did not place in any tournaments. The important thing was they did not quit. They showed up to each game and were always ready to compete even when the odds were not in their favor. This showed me character that they will need in becoming good individuals. These are the lessons and principles that we are teaching in our program. When things are not going your way, you still have to show up to get better. Quitters never win and winners never quit! Showing up is 90 % of life, the only way you can change your outcome is to participate. Middle School Boys team worked hard and did very well in Gladiator tournament and Each One Teach One tournament where they placed third in both. We always had a full team so they showed us their commitment and dedication by showing up for practice on time each week. They have made great steps in their attitude toward each other. By the end of the summer they were holding each other accountable. They were encouraging each other in a positive way. This was a principle that we were teaching them. By the end of the summer they came in first place in West 4th street and the BIG Brown Memorial tournament and they faced many of the same teams that they lost to in the beginning of the summer. 12under Boys Team is where we start. We reach out to the community letting them know that we have this opportunity for their children under 12. We also explain to the parents that we have openings for their older brothers and sisters. We have an orientation with the parents or I conduct a one on one with them explaining our expectations of the program. This has worked well for us in the last year. We have been able to have better communications with the parents, and the children have been responding better knowing that we can contact their parents if there any issues. When a child regularly misbehaves, I am able to help the parents see the problem. I let them know the issue that I am having with their child so they are able to help us address the concerns. We explain to them that we need their help combating this behavior. I make it a point to let them know that their child is welcome and they need this outlet and ask them to allow their boy or girl to continue to play on the team. We were able to get donations of $1,000 that came from the parents of the children. These funds went to more tournaments that were not a part of our budget

The Prerequisites for joining the Liturgical Dance Ministry: Become a member of Central Baptist Church, Complete Abundant Life Course Participate in a Discipleship Group Accomplishments in 2017 The Dance Ministry introduced a 12 week Praise Dance Project and a 12 week Master Class Starting January 2017. These classes were great opportunity for learning to praise the Lord through movement. Psalm 149 says” Let them praise His name with dancing and make music to Him with tambourine and harp…”; and 2 Samuel

says,” David ….danced before the Lord with all His might.” The Praise Dance session start the last week in January 2017. The Ministry is looking forward to this new venture. Goals for 2018 We are still very open to participating with other CBC ministries in order to honor and celebrate God’s majesty. We dance to music, song and the spoken word. And we often collaborate with various ministries throughout the church, such as the choir, the band, the women’s ministry, and other teams in the church. We welcome all creative ideas and enjoy composing dances, as we work together.

Men's Ministry

Oversight Pastor John Fils-Aime

Coordinator Otis Coleman

T he purpose of the Men's Ministry is to

invite, equip, train, befriend and inspire gifted men to giving generously to the work of Jesus Christ in private and public life. Our Goals are:

• Increased integrity

• Humility

• Leadership

• Involvement in church life

The Men's Ministry of Central Baptist Church is REAL/PROGRESSIVE/CHALLENGING "...one man gives freely, yet gains even more; another

Women’s Ministry

Oversight: Pastor John Fils-Aime

Women’s Ministry has two major components: Discipleship & Fellowship.

The Women’s Ministry Leaders meet the second Sunday of each month at 1pm.

I.

Discipleship Interim Chairperson: Kimberly Casteline

O ur Purpose: To encourage spiritual growth and deepen our relationship with God through the study of God’s Word.

Our Guiding Scripture: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”

2 Timothy 2:15 The Women’s Discipleship Ministry ties into the church vision by, consistently studying the word of God, sharing what we have learned and showing everyone the love of Jesus. Through this ministry we encourage the women of Central to grow in their walk with the Lord through direct study of the scripture in small groups and special events throughout the year. Women’s Discipleship Groups offer: A focused study in the Word of God The importance of knowing God, what it means to develop a strong Godly relationship with other women, learning how to live out your faith in every area of your life, and understanding the power of Prayer. In 2017 we had five groups of women (with 5-10 members per group) meeting at various times during the week. The ministry engaged with approximately forty women through the Jesus Calling series, Receiving Christ’s Hope by Sarah Young. 2017 Events: The Women’s Discipleship groups completed the Jesus Calling Bible Study Series on Living a Life of Worship. In June we hosted our kickdown luncheon with a Caribbean theme in the upper gym. The theme was based on bible study. Sonya Tonge, praise dancers, Kimberly Casteline, Sharrata Hunt, Erica Winn did dramatic readings.

We had several culinary activities throughout the year open to the congregation in 2017. We accepted donations and collected funds to supplement scholarships for the Women’s Retreat.

In September, we hosted our Getaway Retreat in Stamford, CT at Marriot Spa and Resort. The theme was Anchored in Hope. The weekend activities included morning prayer, praise and worship, painting, collage, drama, and dynamic interactive presentations from our guest speaker Jill May.

In October we started our new season of small group study using The Armor of God by Priscilla Shirer.

Ministry Goals for 2018 are:

• Encouraging women in their faith through our bible studies. This year study topic is The Armor of God by Priscilla Shirer.

• Continuing to show each other and the community the Love of Jesus

• Planning our 2018 Kickdown Event

• Planning several social events for the women as an opportunity to fellowship together and invite non-members to Central

• Planning a 2019 Women’s Retreat

II. Women’s Fellowship (Third Monday) Fellowship Leaders: Christine Lewis and Diane Singleton

Our Purpose: To build community by integrating spiritual and social aspects of life. Our aim is to cultivate spiritually mature women through rightly dividing God’s truth and applying it to our shared life, resources, and responsibilities. Our shared responsibilities include, but are not limited to: forgiving one another, bearing one another’s burdens, loving one another, teaching one another, exhorting one another, confessing our sins to one another, edifying one another, and praying for one another. The leaders Christine Lewis and Diane Singleton, after serving the Third Monday Fellowship for several years stepped down at the end of 2017 to make room for new leaders to emerge. Kristy Fils-Aime has taken the reins as the Women’s Fellowship Leader in 2018. Our Guiding Scripture: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” Acts 2:42 Testimonies/Events

• Pastor and Kristy Fils-Aime facilitated the Third Monday Series on The Emotionally Healthy Woman: Eight Things You Have to Quit to Change Your Life by Geri Scazzero.

• Hosted a Secret Santa Fellowship

Goals for 2018

• Continue Women’s Fellowship on a regular basis and serve as a pipeline for women engaging in discipleship and other Christian education offerings.

• In an effort to increase participation, assess barriers to attendance and improve accessibility to women fellowship activities.

• Engage in community outreach activities and service projects.

• Fellowship with other Christian based organizations.

• Build and equip women to serve and to lead.

PRAYER MINISTRY

Altar Workers Ministry, Intercessory Prayer Ministry and Evening Prayer

ALTAR WORKERS Oversight: Deacons

Coordinator—Stephanie Cunningham

M ission: To bridge the gap (or “hold the hand” of an

individual) between the time the individual comes forward during an Altar Call, to the time the individual begins the Abundant Life Course, thus

preventing the individual from “falling through the cracks.” GOALS FOR 2018

To be spiritually in a position where we can be sensitive to the needs of an individual that comes forward during an Altar Call and follow up with the appropriate action so that ultimately, the individual will be in the position to bear much good fruit for the Kingdom of God. Continue Partnering with Samaritan’s Heart Ministry

• Talk and pray with Samaritan’s Heart’s contact

• Foster a relationship with those contacts, as necessary, and encourage their growth in the faith and relationship with the Lord. The result of this partnership would mean:

More direct communication from our church with our brothers and sisters in Christ that are going through

Showing them the love of Christ.

Being there for them in every way that we can, which is in line with our L4 Principles.

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. James 5:16

Intercessory Prayer Ministry

Mission Statement: To pray everyday for the needs and concerns of our church, our community and the world. We believe that prayer is not only the answer but that through prayer we see the

answers. Immediate Mission: To pray daily, consistently and collectively for all received prayer request from our Central Baptist Church members and friends as well as current events. We have seen miracles as God has answered prayer mightily.

Evening Prayer Coordinator—Sharrata Hunt Mission Statement: To provide a consistent time that

our church can come together to pray as a community to praise, pray and worship God. Meeting Time: The last Friday* of each month starting at 6:00PM and ideally going until

800PM. The motto is, “Come when you can, leave when you must, but come and pray!” *The meeting time varies around the holidays and will occur either the Friday before the holiday or the Friday after the holiday. There have been times when there has only been me and one other person or even me alone. And it never fails, that as I prepare to leave at 7:00PM because I am alone, someone comes in. Evening Prayer has never ended earlier than 8:15PM. Since attendance was low in 2016, I considered stepping away and letting the ministry stop. Our summer intern Pamela Mitchell encouraged me to continue with the ministry reminding me the importance of prayer. In an effort to create a richer experience, we have been using “Scripture Talks with God” published by Thomas Nelson Publishers as an outline for the time of prayer.

Our tendency when praying is ask for God’s blessings or intervention on and in our lives and the lives of our family, friends and the broader world; and we rarely spend much time solely praising God because of who He is and we don’t spend much time confessing.

James 5:16 reads, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” Scripture Talks covers each facet of prayer with corresponding scriptures of Praise, Confession, Affirmation, Renewal, Thanksgiving and a Closing Prayer. The prayer sheet was redesigned and now contains the full scripture reading, space for writing prayer requests as well as a list of Central’s leadership, staff, ministries, missionaries and members and friends who need our prayers. Since the Holy Spirit is the One who prompts prayers as well as prays when we don’t know how to pray, the prayer sheet is meant to serve as a guide.

H ow often do you get an opportunity to sit back and reflect on God’s faithfulness? In what ways does this impact your faith? During the month of December, our church family had the opportunity to focus on God’s provisions as we celebrated Central’s 175th Anniversary. Each celebratory event was designed to encourage us to reflect on God’s

faithfulness towards his church during the past 175 years. As a member of Central’s 175th Anniversary Planning Committee, I thought I might highlight some of the areas where I observed his faithfulness, hoping it will encourage us to trust him as we continue, “Moving Forward”. Central’s 175th Anniversary theme, “Moving Forward” (Exodus 14:15), was selected because it described a period in which God led his people on a journey of faith that required complete dependence on his provision and guidance through an unfamiliar destination. When God gave Moses directives to “Move Forward”, the Israelites seemed to be facing an impossible situation. If they chose to move forward they would have to face the dangers of the Red Sea. But the other alternative—standing still or turning around would mean being captured by the Egyptian army. Throughout Central’s history, the church has faced challenges that required dependence on God’s provision to navigate our way through unfamiliar territory, including but not limited to: 1. Moving/Relocating from 4-6 different buildings to its current location on the Upper West Side; 2. Integrating the membership to reflect a more culturally diverse community.

As we reflect back on our history, we clearly see God’s faithfulness. These spiritual markers should enable us to trust him through future challenges we are sure to encounter, both individually and collectively as a church body. As a Committee, we experienced challenges related to implementing all the creative and innovative ideas within our time frame and budget constraints. The 175th Anniversary celebration included several days of events, each requiring coordination of various moving parts. On top of all that, some of our committee members were challenged with personal struggles. Our Committee was forced to rely on God’s provision and guidance to accomplish through us what he desired. Allow me a moment to highlight God’s faithfulness, as observed during this brief snapshot of time.

• Countless individuals who served as ushers, servers, and volunteers contributing their time and talents to make the semi-formal dinner enjoyable for all in attendance.

• Live testimonials from CBC family on how they personally have seen God’s faithfulness demonstrated through CBC.

• A visual reminder (slideshow) of God’s forward movement through Central’s ministries and people today.

• Faithful service by our members, some whom have served 20-50+ years.

DATE: Wednesday, December 10; EVENT: Homecoming Service—Pastor Fils-Aime shared examples of God’s faithfulness towards the Israelites that remains true for us today (Exodus 14:10-18) See page 19. Spiritual Markers Observed:

• When God’s movement is most confusing, that is when his plan is most effective.

• God puts us in a position to see a glimpse of his goodness, grace, and power.

• God tells the people to move forward before he opens up a path; Order of sequence: People moved first, then God moved.

Guiding Scripture — Exodus 14:15

175th Anniversary-Semi-Formal Dinner

Sermon Text for Homecoming Service Exodus 14:10-18 (NIV)

A s Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the

Lord. They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!” Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. 17 I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. 18 The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.”

What Scripture Says About Generosity

2 Corinthians 9:6-14 (NIV)

R emember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all

times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.”

Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people, but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. And in their prayers for you, their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!

ONLINE GIVING GUIDELINES When giving to the work of the Kingdom, we should only give based on the funds which are immediately available. For this reason, please do NOT use credit cards for your tithes and offerings. Central Baptist Church requests that you only use debit cards or direct debit from your checking account (ACH). Thank you and God's blessings be with you.

IN MEMORIAM (continued)

REVEREND HENRY V. HARRISON

Rev. Harrison served as Assistant Pastor of Central Baptist Church from September 1975 to September 1977. He continued through the years aa a guest preacher on Sundays and favorite speaker for the Senior Monthly Luncheon. A Remembrance of Rev. Henry V. Harrison by Dan Wolgemuth Henry and I met Pastor Donald Brueschwyler in 1974 at the Conservative Baptist Convention in St. Paul, MN. We were scheduled to sing on the plenary session on Wednesday evening and again on Friday morning. It was after hearing us there that Pastor Don later approached us about the possibility of working part time at Central Baptist during the school year. So, we sat down together and came up with a schedule that allowed us to continue our weekly concert ministry, Tuesday afternoons after school, Wednesday evenings and one Sunday each month. Henry was to serve as Assistant Pastor and I as Music Director. Every Tuesday, Henry and I would attend our local Kwanis Club meeting in Lancaster, get in our van afterwards and head up to NYC about a 3-hour drive. We would arrive in time to begin an “after school program” where Henry was responsible for devotionals to several of the basketball teams Pastor Don was coaching. I would have rehearsals for a children’s chorus, grades 1 thru 5 and a young people’s choir in the early evening while Henry continued his devotionals to the teams. On Wednesdays, we would have a staff meeting

with Pastor Don and his secretary, Elizabeth, where we would plan the Sunday services-particularly the one that we would attend for that month and in general discuss the mid-week on–going program. That afternoon we had a “dinner break” for the after school kids where a simple lunch was served. Later

in the afternoon, I would offer special piano instruction and /or vocal instruction. Wednesday evening prayer service would usually be officiated by Henry, after which we held our Adult Choir rehearsal. For our designated Sunday service, Henry would preach and sing, the Adult Choir would sing and I would play the organ and piano. Following the service, we would all go up to the Isabella Home on Audubon Avenue to minister there. Henry (who passed into glory this past July 2017) and I felt an instant affinity and vision of ministry with Pastor Don the moment we met. Our time at Central was beloved and fruitful. So many events and times of ministry could be mentioned; the laughter, the tears, the counseling, the innovations, the friendships, all far too many to write down here. Just be it known, Henry Harrison and Dan Wolgemuth are forever grateful to Pastor Don and how God used him to bring it all together. Edited 08/18/2017
