“It is not just about what's new in food safety, wherever you are in the world and whatever it is that you do. It’s also about

how we learn from the past to drive change for the future”

Global Food Safety Conference 2016

KEY THOUGHTS FOR FUTURE DIRECTION

3

• Can we simplify existing and potentiallyfuture data streams and lessen theburden of reporting?

• Effectiveness of the current system -Is this way fit for purpose?

• What will be the effective system in thefuture?

Page 4: A vision of the future of food safety · Move from data reporting and collecting to data access. National systems being built should be built with interoperability in mind. The possibility

▪ Data in a future, the ideal EUfood safety system.

▪ A common model - commonbusiness rules, highly harmonisedlegislation even at national level -difficult to achieve.

▪ Aiming for as many standardisedmodels as possible in somedomains would be a validobjective.

THE IDEAL EU FOOD SAFETY DATA MODEL

▪ In an era of big data, organizationsneed to look towards the future.

▪ Finding benefits in terms of reductionof double reporting, data formattingand collection efforts.

▪ Finding potential interoperabilitybenefits.

▪ Development of new technologyprovides modern solutions (e.g. indata capture, real-time dataapproach, AI etc.).

DATA IN A FUTURE

▪ Increasing speed of datageneration.

▪Opportunity to develop adifferent way of approachingdata governance.

EXAMPLE OF MODERN APPROACH

Page 8: A vision of the future of food safety · Move from data reporting and collecting to data access. National systems being built should be built with interoperability in mind. The possibility

▪ Digital capture of data at the pointof creation.

▪ Exploration of blockchaintechnology, optical characterrecognition (OCR), barcode readingand various artificial intelligence(AI) methodologies for efficientquality of data capture.

▪ Real time - The increasing velocityof data adds to the general pressureon organisations to respond in realtime.

▪ Modern, streaming data architectureeasily integrates structured, semi-structured and unstructured data.

▪ Move from data reporting and collecting to data access.

▪ National systems being built should be built with interoperability in mind.

▪ The possibility of data use from multiple sources in a variety of formats and locations in almost real time as they are created.

▪ Discussions on designing the ‘future food safety data ecosystem of Europe’. By opening up systems so they can interact with each other.

▪ Shift from data collection to data connection

DATA IN A FUTURE

▪ Connected and interoperable food safetysystems.

▪ Opening access to real-time data.

▪ Access to the data from various sources andenabling users to retrieve exactly the datathey need.

▪ Supporting the identification of emergingrisks and fraud activity, provision of alerts, crisis management and identify patterns ofinterest to food safety professionals.

▪ Effective and efficient official controls, riskassessment and risk management

CHALLENGES TO BE SOLVED

11

• Security and confidentiality - the requirements for data access by different users and at different levels have to be identified.

• Misinterpretation of data – e.g. flagging the data when the appropriate authority needs to be contacted before using the data.

Page 12: A vision of the future of food safety · Move from data reporting and collecting to data access. National systems being built should be built with interoperability in mind. The possibility

▪ More expertise on data isneeded throughout Europeanfood safety institutions.

▪ Attract more data scientists.

▪ Encouraging data-relatededucation activities.

▪ Collaborative joint projectsand sharing best practises

INCREASE DATA LITERACY

12

▪Strategic planning

▪Address long-term challenges

▪ Prioritising

▪Defining actionable projects
