Camp Shelby REVEILLE Page 2 Thursday, November 29, 2012 Col. Brad Smith A true patriot.... What defines a patriot? Is it their love of country or their end- less devotion to duty? Is it their selfless service or their actions that inspire the next generation to serve their country? It is not every day that you have the opportunity to witness a true act of patriotism from one of America’s heroes. Just recently at Camp Shelby we had the honor to celebrate the service of Petty Of- ficer First Class William A. Barnes, U.S. Coast Guard, World War II. As his last wish, Barnes donated his U.S. Coast Guard uniform to the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum in a special cer- emony on Nov. 16. One of the things that inspired me the most was the courage and the valiant patriotism of William Barnes. Even now when his health is failing him, he still stands out of his wheelchair for the American Flag. Barnes is a true patriot to inspire the future generations of Americans and military service members. I trust that you and your Fam- ily had a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by Family and friends. Let us not forget our comrades in arms who are serv- ing our nation so bravely in harm’s way during the holidays. Team, welcome members of the 55th Heavy Brigade Combat Team, Pennsylvania Army Na- tional Guard and the 133rd Engi- neers from the Wyoming Army National Guard as they complete their mobilization training at Camp Shelby. These are just a few of our comrades in arms that we have the honor in assisting with their mission readiness. Continue the standard of excel- lence that Camp Shelby is known for by providing superior training and support for mobilizing troops. Stay vigilant as we prepare to welcome home members of the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, New York Army National Guard along with other comrades in arms. Thank you for your serv- ice and sacrifice. Welcome back and congratulations on a job well done! Thanks to all of you for your dedicated support as we continue the mission of mobilizing and de- mobilizing American heroes. It is an honor and a privilege to assist America’s finest patriots as they embark on their journey for the continued fight for freedom. Thank you for all that you do and keep up the good work.
