Our trip to Meteora

The  Metéora   = "middle of the sky",   "suspended  in  the  air“  or  "in the  heavens  above“-   is one of the  largest  and  most  important  complexes  of  Eastern  Orthodox  monasteries  in Greece,  second only to  Mount Athos. The Metéora  is  included  on  the  UNESCO  World  Heritage  List

The  first  monks  came  here  in  the  late  11th  and  early  12th  centuries  From  Mount  Athos . The  monks  were  safe  from  raiders  who  wanted  control  overthe  fertile  plain  of  Thessaly. 

This is the  Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron - it  is  the  largest  of  the  monasteries .  The  building  serves  as  the main  museum  for  tourists. 

The  six  monasteries are  built  on  natural   sandstone   rock  pillars,  at  the northwestern  edge  of  the   Plain  of  Thessaly  near  the  Pineios  river  and   Pindus   Mountains ,   in central  Greece.  The  nearest   town is  Kalambaka. 

The only means of reaching  the  top of  the  pillar    was  by climbing  a  long  ladder,  which  was  drawn up  whenever  the  monks  felt  threatened  .Also  large nets  were used to  haul  up both  goods  and  people.

Beautiful flowers are another attraction in monasteries !

Kastraki   is  the  picturesque  village  at  the  foot  of  the  huge  rocks .  

The  view  from  up  here  is magnificent !

The monasteries  dominate  the  valley and  symbolize  the fragility  of the traditional  way  of  life  .

We  will certainly  come  back  to  explore this  unique  monument  of  nature !

This  arched bridge was built  in 1514  by  St. Vissarion , and up to 1936 was  the  only  link  between  the  plains  of   Thessaly and  the  villages  of Pindos   mountains .   It  is  67 m long,  2.05 m wide  and   30.5 m high  at 

the  centre .  

On  the second day  we travelled  to  the   ski  resort at  Pertouli .  On  the  way we stopped  at  this  old  

stone  bridge .

We  walked  over  the  bridge  and admired the  view  of  the  river . 

Pertouli  is a small mountain  village  of  the  Pindos  mountain  range.It  is most famous for the  Ski resort  that is very  popular with  snow sports  fans  in  central  Greece . The area around the ski resort has one of  the most  beautiful  mountainous  scenery  of  central  Greece !

Our last stop was  at  Elati , a beautiful village , where  we  had  lunch ( delicious  local  specialities ) 

and  then  started  our  trip  back  to  Halkida .

Travelling  fills  us  with beautiful  pictures   and makes  us  richer !
