Sarihan Caravanserai was built during the reign of Izzettin Keykavus II (1249-1254), perhaps by him, in 1249. It is constructed of smoothlyhewn yellow, pink and beige stone. Two contrasting colors of stone are used to decorative effect on the arches of the main outer portal and innerportal. Restoration of this caravanserai, parts of which were in ruins, was completed in 1991. This was the last caravanserai to be built by theSeljuk sultans.

Uchisar is situated at the highest point in Cappadocia. The top of the Uchisar Castle, provides a magnificent panorama of the surrounding areawith Mount Arcos in the distance. Many rooms hollowed out into the rock are connected to each other with stairs, tunnels and passages. At theentrances of the rooms, there are millstone doors, just like the ones in the underground settlements, used to control access to these places.Although it is not possible to reach all the rooms, most are in use as pigeon houses (dovecotes) today. Farmers used these cave pigeon housesto collect the droppings of pigeons which is an excellent natural fertilizer for the orchards and vineyards. Most of these cave dwellings have beenpainted white to attract the birds and their valuable droppings. The fairy chimneys to the west, east and north of Uchisar were hollowed outand used as graves during the Roman period. Inside these rock cut tombs, the entrances which generally face west, are kilns or stone slabson which the bodies were laid.

This village attracts the Turkish people more thanforeigners.

Still holding true to the influences of design stemming from the Ottoman state Avanos has built a fine reputation for ceramic production intraditional style and spirit. Turkish ceramic art with its colour and design characteristics, has made a huge impact throughout the ages. Ceramicshave been a traditional handicraft in Avanos probably since Hittite times, 2000-1500 BC. Today this central Anatolian town has carried thistradition into the 21 st century. CHEZ GALIP KORUKCU ceramic master, known throughout the Cappadocia region is host and owner of ÇEÇPottery. His knowledge stems from his youth as he was born and grew up in Avanos where he learned the craft from his father. Galip and hiswife Lilian have devoted themselves to the culture of ceramic art and share the knowledge with guests.

The Zelve Open-Air Museum, which once housed one of the largest communitiesin the region is an amazing cave town, honeycombed with dwellings, religious andsecular chambers. Here, the Christians and Muslims lived together in perfectharmony, until 1924. Then Christians had to leave the Valley because of the exchangeof minorities between Greece and Turkey, and the Muslims were forced to evacuatethe Valley in the 50's when life became dangerous due to risk of erosion. GoremeValley holds the region’s best collection of churches carved in the rocks and decoratedwith excellent frescoes (1000-2000 AD).

The Christians abandoned Sirince Village in 1922 in the population exchange with theMoslems coming from Macedonia and Western Thrace. When the immigrants arrived, theycould not afford to build new houses so they simply started using what they found here.Eventually this thousand year old village became a historic monument for its uniquearchitecture in a fabulous setting.

The grand avenues and intact social buildings of Ephesus help one build the city in the imagination with not too much effort. As one walks inthe theater, which had a seating capacity of 24,000, the sounjds of the enraged Ephesians, led by Demitrius the silversmith, can almost be heard.According to Acts 19, St. Pau, who visited Ephesus twice, was never given an opportunity to speak in this theater when the Ephesians werereminded that St. Paul and his teachings were a threat to the way they made their living. So Paul wrote everything he had to say to theEphesians in his letters. Thus Ephesus is mentioned not only in Acts but there is an entire chapter in the Bible named the Epistle of Apostle Paulto the Ephesians.

The island of Delos, near Mykonos, near the center of the Cyclades archipelago, is one ofthe most important mythological, historical and archaeological sites in Greece. Theexcavations in the island are among the most extensive in the Mediterranean; ongoing worktakes place under the direction of the French School at Athens and many of the artifactsfound are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Delos and the National ArchaeologicalMuseum of Athens. Delos had a position as a holy sanctuary for a millennium beforeOlympian Greek mythology made it the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis.

The island of Santorini or Thira is located in the Cyclades islands, in the middle of theGreek Islands of the Aegean Sea. Santorini is, along with Mykonos and Crete, the mostfamous holiday destinations in Greece. It is a small group of volcanic islands and itsname refers to to Saint Irene. Called also Strongili and Kalisti, the island was the siteof one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the world and what remains today is asubmerged volcano and a caldera. The island of Santorini is related to the myth ofAtlantis, the amazing views from the villages of Fira, Oia perched on cliffs, santoriniansunset, the black and red beaches, the wine, and much more.

This region as a whole is rich with ancient history, most notably through the Minoan civilization centered at Kydonia east of Rethymon. Today'sold town (palia poli) is almost entirely built by the Venetians. It is one of the best preserved old towns in Crete. The town still maintains its oldaristocratic appearance, with its buildings dating from the 16th century, arched doorways, stone staircases, Byzantine and Hellenic-Romanremains, the small Venetian harbour and narrow streets. The city's Venetian-era citadel, the Fortezza, is one of the best-preserved castles inCrete. Other monuments include the Neratze mosque (the Municipal Odeon arts center), the Great Gate, the Piazza Rimondi (Rimondi square)and the Venetian Loggia.

For many centuries, while naval travel was the only means for transportation, the island of Kythira possessed astrategic location. Since ancient times, until the mid 19th century, it had been a crossroads of merchants, sailors, and conquerors. As such, it has had a long and varied history and has been influenced by many civilisations andcultures. This is reflected in its architecture (a blend of traditional, Aegean and Venetian elements), as well as thetraditions and customs, influenced by centuries of coexistence of the Greek, Venetian, Ottoman and Britishcivilisations as well as its numerous visitors.
